THE Mitchell’s Plain Education Forum (MPEF) as-sisted over 500 unemployed youth when it hosted itsannual Post-School Opportunities Seminar forschool leavers and unemployed youth.

Scores of youth queued in the heat last Thursday atSpine Road High School in Rocklands.

The seminar was hosted in partnership with the Mitch-ell’s Plain Youth Unemployment Prevention Project(MPYUPP).

The aim of the seminar was to assist unemployedyouth, specifically school leavers, with education andemployment opportunities. Some sought information onspecific careers while some were accepted at universitiesbut had problems accessing funds. Many wanted to studyat university but were not accepted due to their gradesor lack of space. There were also those who had not yetdecided on what to study.

Cameron Dugmore, Special Advisor in the Presidencyfor National Planning, was the keynote speaker.

Guests at the seminar included Yumiko Fujiwara, theCounsellor and Consul of the Embassy of Japan; and Col-leen Horswell, the MPEF Steering Committee memberand programme director.

The summit was attended by over 800 education stake-holders and residents from the community, who nomi-nated participants of the summit to form the SteeringCommittee of the MPEF. The MPEF has rolled out over40 community upliftment projects. This includes the for-mation of the Mitchell’s Plain Skills Centre, opened in2010 which holds training programmes for unemployedyouth.

The MPEF is also in the process of expanding the Incu-

bation Centre where unemployed youth are trained to be-come self-employed.

Dugmore encouraged school leavers and unemployedyouth to take advantage of the opportunities being of-fered and not to give up on their dreams and goals.

Organisations that offered opportunities and advice in-cludes the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA),the Department of Labour, College of Cape Town, FalseBay College, CPUT, MPYUPP, Heal the Hood, develop-ment and motivational speaker Bridgett Whyte, thePlacement Zone and MWEB.

Dagga plantation destroyedA LENTEGEUR woman was arrested lastweek during crime prevention opera-tions in the Mitchell’s Plain cluster forcultivating dagga plants on her property.

A complaint was received on Tuesdayalerting police to investigate a house in Be-gonia Street, explains Constable JeromeVoegt, the spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plainpolice.

“Officers discovered three fully-growndagga plants in the yard and a 26-year-oldwoman was arrested. She appeared in theMitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court onThursday and faced a charge of drug posses-sion.”

The next day at 12:30, officers stopped andsearched a couple during routine vehicle pa-trols in Blockhouse Street, Eastridge.

They found 69 mandrax tablets, 25 half-mandrax tablets, 25 small packets of tik and27 dagga stoppe in their possession, with anestimated street value of R4 000.

The suspects, aged 30 and 54, were arrest-ed. “That same afternoon, officers doing avehicle patrol in Buttress Street, Tafelsig, noticed a suspicious looking minor. He wassearched and our members confiscated 10dagga stoppe. A 17-year-old was arrested,”Voegt adds.

From Tuesday to Thursday, 38 suspectswere nabbed for drug possession.

Voegt thanked the street committees andsector sub-forums who joined police in com-bating crime, and urges them to remain vigi-lant and to contact their respective sectorcommanders with information on illegal ac-tivity in their communities.

BUSTED: Three Mitchell’s Plainmen – aged 33, 50 and 60 – appeared in the local magistrate’scourt on Thursday after beingcharged with possession of stolen property. The men were arrested by members of Paarl police’s Vehicle Identification andSafeguarding Section and theprovincial Flying Squad duringan operation on Monday. The officers responded to a tipoffabout alleged stolen vehiclesbeing kept at a house in Leicester Street, Mitchell’s Plain. Provincial police spokespersonFrederick van Wyk says policearrived at the scene at 11:00and discovered what appearedto be a vehicle chopshop. “AToyota lightduty vehicle, fromwhich the engine had been removed, was discovered. It wasstolen in Malmesbury earlierthis month. A second Toyota LDV found on the premises was examined and later seizedafter it was established that all identification marks had been removed,” says Van Wyk.He added that of the four Toyota engines found on the scene, one belonged to a ToyotaConquest stolen in Bishop Lavis in June last year and the numbers of the other threehad been removed. “These engines, along with other vehicle parts – including doors, panels, roll bars and wheels – were all confiscated,” he confirms. Shirley Valentyn – anything but romanticShirley Valentyn – anything but romanticWILLY RUSSEL

WHEN actress Shaleen Surtie-Richardsand director Hennie van Greunen firstmet in 2007 to discuss the possibility of do-ing a Cape Town version of Willy Russell’sbeloved play, they did not have an inklingof what lay ahead.

When Shirley Valentyn opened in 2008 with“Nenna” in the title role, thousands had theopportunity to see the show on stage until itcompleted its run two years later.

Requests to extend the show poured in.Cape Town audiences have the chance to

see Shirley Valentyn, in the intimate settingof the Golden Arrow Studio in the Baxter The-atre Centre. It will run till Saturday 18 Febru-ary.

Although Willy Russell’s original play isapproaching the quarter-of-a-century mark, the universal appeal of one woman’s journey

to self-discovery is poignant, funny and sad.It still has the same impact on today’s audi-ences as on those of two decades ago. WithShaleen’s exceptional acting skills and Hen-nie’s experience in creating shows that moveand change audiences, this production willleave no one untouched.

Celebrated writer/director/producer Hen-nie van Greunen has proven again and againthat he has an eye for brilliant plays in pro-ductions like Die Hangkas Haas, Lyf, Op dievrou af, Die Tafel, Anna se Engel, Blougat,Festen, Die vrou wat haar man gekook het, DieNaaimasjien, Janneman and Dinsdae by Mor-rie.

With this play, Shaleen returned to whathas always been her spiritual home as per-former, the stage. After seeing Willy Russell’sShirley Valentine (the London productionwithPaulineCollins) Shaleen fell in lovewiththis feisty, straight-talking woman who de-cides to change her entire life in mid-sen-

tence. “I’m still going to play her,” Shaleenthought to herself. And now she is.

So come and join Shirley for a glass of

Greek wine, a plate of Kaapse curry and lotsof hilarious Shirley wisdom. Book at Com-puticket.

“Besides having the appetite for the game, every season brings new challenges and thisseason was no different. We had new coach-ing staff at Yankees as well as new players.I was eager and excited to be a part of thisunit as well as the national squad of 25 select-ed at the National Provincial Champion-ships in March 2001.

I needed to get back into the game quickerthan normal in order for me to maximize mypreparation and give myself every opportu-nity to participate at that level again,” shesaid.

The 34-year-old resident of Plumstead hasbeen part of the national side since 2002 andlast did national duty in the 2010 Woman’sWorld Championship in Caracas, Venezue-la.

She also shared in all 12 gold medal suc-cess of the Western Province senior woman’steam at the annual provincial champion-ships. This year’s championships take placein Bloemfontein next month.

With regards to her future she said, “I haveno plans to retire in the near future and hopeto play at this level for as long as I am ableto perform. When time for retirement doesarrive, I would prefer to remain active in oth-er areas of the game.”

In a society where woman are still beingmarginalised or relegated to the kitchen , shehas managed to combine the responsibilitiesof motherhood and that of her sporting aspi-rations. On September 15 she gave birth toa baby girl, Karys, and four weeks later sheresumed training and is currently in the na-tional squad of 25 who are preparing for the2012 Woman’s World Championships whichwill beheld later this year inWhitehorse,Yu-kon, Canada.

OnSaturday, sheplayedamajor role in theYankees’ 8-6 win over arch-rivals Falcons. This helped her side to maintain the top spoton the Western Province’s Super league ta-ble.

Although she did not bat well in the match, she pivoted a fine double-play to end thegame. With the score at 8-6 in the last in-nings, Nicky Jones of Falcons was up to batwith one down and bases loaded. Jonesgrounded the ball to third base where Glynisdid duty. She forced out the advancing run-ner before nailing Jones with superb peg tofirst base.

“I actually started training with a personaltrainer three months into my pregnancy. Be-ing pregnant, it was important to be trainingwith someonewithapre- and-postnatal back-

ground. For two weeks before the birth ofmy child I trained with a biokineticist(Tyrell Allies), twice a week. I resumed train-ing with him four weeks after giving birth, this time three times per week; once againwith authorization from my gynaecologist, “said Glynis with a glowing smile towardsher husband, Lester.

“Lester ismybiggest fanandbiggest critic, hence great support,” she remarked.
