And, residents say, the company has ap- plied to purchase three more properties for other housing developments. The Rondevlei Ratepayers’ Association are incensed by the apparent plans and are demanding that they be consulted about any potential developments before more land is bought. It is understood that the sale of land by the City of Cape Town to Milbloem 32 – known six years ago as the Rondevlei Trust – result- ed in homes being built without pavements, despite this being part of the specifications. Natalie Bent, the ward councillor and sub- council chairperson, alleges that the devel- oper claimed to have run out of funds. City officials say it was required of the de- velopers to develop grass verges and vehicle access, to which they apparently complied. Naaym Barendse, the chairperson of the Rondevlei Ratepayers Association, disputes this, saying the developer has not fulfilled its obligation. “No pavements were built when the company developed this area. No provisions were made for parks either,” Barendse says. Because of the weeds and sand which cov- er the roadside, pedestrians are now forced to walk in the street. In response, Bent has set aside R200 000 meant to further develop her ward to con- struct pavements. She says she has on sever- al occasions tried to meet with the develop- er, but he apparently refuses to meet with council officials. “Subcouncil has contacted the developers several times, but the company is just not interested. In Highlands Village, the same thing has transpired when the Cape Town Community Housing Company came in and developed the area,” she says. Bent is willing to dig into her ward alloca- tion to fund the work as she has had numer- ous requests to build safe walkways. Fund- ing will be made available in the next finan- cial year, and every year thereafter, to deal with the issue. “I cannot beg continuously from developers. Their reply is usually that they do not have funding,” she says. The developer has also declined a meeting request made by the ratepayers’ association. After initially declining to comment, Ed- ward Beukes, one of the partners of Milblo- em 32, was only willing to say he has not at- tended any of the meetings as both the asso- ciation and the ward councillor have failed to clarify the nature of the interaction. But Brett Herron, the Mayoral Committee member for Transport, Roads and Stormwa- ter, says the developer complied with the specifications outlined by the City. “All of the new phases [of the project] are in keeping with the phases that have already been completed,” he says. However, Barendse counters this saying that on some streets, visible provisions have been made for tarred sidewalks but a gravel verge is all that there is. However, Herron says: “Funds for the con- struction of footways are limited and only those areas with the highest priority rating can be selected for construction, which is roads with high traffic volumes or roads serving schools and churches.” A new school built on Fulham Road has no sidewalks for pupils who walk to and from school every day. Islamia College has almost 250 pupils and opened last year. Principal Nazrina Teladia says there should be pavements on either side of the school so children can walk facing oncom- ing traffic. “It is a safety hazard to have chil- dren walk in the roads. My learners have to walk in the sand and in winter those gravel pavements get muddy. It is unsightly. The developer has clearly not taken children in- to consideration when they built here.” People’s Post attempted to gain comment from the Cape Town Community Housing Company, but was unable to do so at our time of going to print. Walkover Chelsea Oliver and Casidy Carstens show off a splash of colour at an annual church bazaar on Saturday. Dear reader,

A visit to shopping malls will confirmthat we’re a mere eight weeks away fromChristmas.

Visual evidence such as gift wrap, giftideas and stores festooned with festivedecorations entrench this.

Some of our smart friends have alreadybought presents for their loved ones, months in advance, in some cases.

They’re the people who work well withtheir cash – emphasis on cash.

The alternative is creditwhich may not be the bestroute, but a necessary evilat times.

Despite our upbringingand the multitude of lec-tures our parents gave usabout the dangers of buyingon credit, most of us havehad to go this route at somepoint.

We can of course justifyour actions when it comesto what is termed “gooddebt”, namely our homesand cars, which few can payfor in cash. In fact, raising the deposit ona house or car is a tall enough order formost. A house is an investment and weneed a car forwork – it’s as simple as that,we reason.

But, as we contemplate our income andexpenses betweennowand the festive sea-son, it might be a good time to spare athought for those less fortunate.

Various initiatives are already under-way to ensure that almost everyone hasa joyous holiday, with the guarantee of ameal on Christmas Day and the joy forchildren, especially, of unwrapping amodest gift.

Please support the efforts of the hun-

dreds, if not thousands, of people and or-ganisations working tirelessly through-out ourbeautiful,world-class city tomakethis a truly joyous Christmas – a day fromwhich nobody should be excluded.

It doesn’t matter which faith we belongto andwhether or notwe celebrateChrist-mas. Each of us has the capacity to care.

Link up with a good cause and give asyou can; whether it’s volunteering yourtime at the SPCA, offering to help out ata children’s home, buying a toy for aneedy child, handing out a few loaves of

bread in an informal settle-ment or making a contribu-tion towards a Christmasmeal for those who cannotafford it. Helping to cookthe meal also goes a longway and it is over the fes-tive season that there is adire need for volunteers.

It’s sad to see the amountof waste from an averagehousehold – specificallyfood that is thrown away, and the mountain of cansstocked in people’s pan-tries. I’ve seen a huge box,

installed at an office for a very good cause, remain empty for weeks. Not a single do-nation of canned food has found its wayinto this box, despite a public appeal forsupport of this worthy cause.

Yes, we should enjoy our hard-earnedmoney, and the pleasure of doing thatmay well be enhanced by a charitabledeed.

’Til next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by

THE TOWN CENTRE has turned into aghost town as shoppers desert the busi-ness hub for a safer retail experience atthe local mall.

Traders say drug dealers are to blame.A police clean-up, increased police visibili-

ty and committed police officers are neededto turn the Town Centre into a safe shoppingzone where customers can feel safe again, vendors say.Traders believe that crime has spiralled

out of control in the business area because ofdrug dealers and addictswho steal fromshop-

pers and traders to feed their habit.Vendors say dealers do not fear police as

“corrupt policemen are getting paid by drugmerchants to turn a blind eye”.Hawkers and shoppers at the Town Centre

say an alleyway close to the fish market iswhere hands exchange money for drugs.A public imbizo was held at the business

hub on Thursday to discuss the way forwardin addressing crime in the precinct.Suspected drug dealers watched in amuse-

ment as police, traders and concerned resi-dents went head-to-head on how to tacklecrime.CaptainHarry Brickles from theMitchell’s

Plain Police Station got the public imbizo off

to a loud start as he called on people to comecloser and share their grievances aboutcrime at the Town Centre with police.Jasmine Harris, the vice chairperson of

the Sector CBD, says people need to breakthe silence and report drug dealers to po-lice.The crowd erupted into loud applause at

Harris’ encouragement of blowing thewhistle and her efforts to rid the businesshub of drug merchants. Those plying their trade at the TownCen-

tre for over 20 years say theyare furious thatcrime has spiralled out of control.Mariam Adams (61) says corrupt officials

must be given the boot.“Police officers come and fetch their pay

from drug dealers here in the alley. It is likea pay centre,” she says. However, Brickles says corrupt police-

men can only be booted out of the force ifthey are reported.“We need the community to identify these

bad cops so that something can be doneabout it. We cannot get rid of them if we donot know who they are,” Brickles explains. He says an identity parade can be ar-

ranged if the public is unable to name –butrather identify – the officer they believeis taking bribes from drug merchants.Paul Louw has been trading at the Town

Centre for over 10 years and says his shopis directly opposite the lane where all thedrug transactions take place.WhenPeople’s Post visited the alley, a sus-

pected drug user ran in the opposite direc-tion.Lookman Hassan, the owner of a shoe

shop at the Town Centre, says local govern-ment needs to place a CCTV camera in thealleywaywhere dealers are selling their poi-son.“They need to put a camera here so that

they can monitor what is happening. Theyare selling drugs here at all hours of the day

and night,” he says.Louw also claims he had seen officers taking

bribes from drug merchants. “Police cannot doanything because more than half of them aretaking from the dealers,” he says.

FISHERMEN are battling potholes withtheir fishing rods in tow.

Four gaping holes line the barrier wall atFisherman’s Lane at Strandfontein Beach.

The beach has been awarded blue flag sta-tus, but currently may not necessarily com-ply with the criteria to be awarded this pres-tigious international label.

The stretch of road used by fishermen andbeachgoers is deteriorating as the waterwashes away the foundation under the tarroad.

The Boating Association’s IgshaanCarstens says the foundation under the taris not strong enough to withstand the strongcurrent which washes onto the road.

“The sand under the tar is being eroded. There is heavy traffic on this stretch of beachas it is a popular fishing destination. Thispath must be upgraded. If you are not famil-iar with this street then it is likely that a mo-torist will drive into a pothole and damagehis car,” Carstens says.

Motorists using the road have been cau-tioned to be mindful of the potholes.

The City of Cape Town’s Sport, RecreationandAmenities departmentwill inNovemberfinalise a way forward in addressing theproblem.

Tandeka Gqada, the Mayoral Committeemember for Community Services, says atwo-pronged approach is being considered.

“We either modify Fisherman’s Lane intoa pedestrian walkway instead of a road, orinitiate a process for the repair of the seawall to protect existing infrastructure suchas parking areas,” she explains.

The cost of repairing apothole ranges fromR2 000 to R9 000, depending on the size.

“The main cause of the collapsed road isthe undercutting of the foundation of the seawall. The resultant sinkholes were filled

with rubble and sandbagswhen the roadwasbuilt. It became evident that this exerciseproved ineffective,” Gqada adds.

CapeTownmotorists have begun claimingfrom the City for damage caused to their ve-hicles by potholes and other hazards onCapeTown roads.

Chris Gertze, the head of the City’s ClaimServices, says those who wish to submit aninsurance claim against the City need to pre-pare an email or letter that includes thedate, time and place of the incident, the nature ofthe incident, the nature of the damage anda cost-estimate to repair it.

Claimants need to also indicate why theyconsider the City to be liable for the damagecaused.

“This must be done within six months ofthe original date of the incident. People cansubmit their insurance claims [email protected],” he says.

The City’s claim officer can also be con-tacted on (021) 400 1736 for further details.

“The insurance branch will acknowledgereceipt of your letter, and request a full re-port from the department against which youare lodging a claim,” he adds.

Mario Oostendurp, the chairperson of theStrandfontein East Ratepayers’ Association, says while the beach does not fall within theboundaries of the association, fishermenwho belong to a fishing club in Bayview arefrustrated as the potholes have been a prob-lem for years.

Strandfontein is a blue flag status beach. This international eco-label is only award-

ed to marinas and beaches that comply withthe Foundation for Environmental Educa-tion’s strict criteria ona season-to-seasonba-sis. The label is given to beaches that meet32 main criteria covering four aspects ofcoastal management. This includes waterquality, environmental education and infor-mation, environmental management as wellas safety and security services.

A MONTCLAIR resident saysGod has it in for him.

This is after the RestorationCommunity Fellowship Churchset up a tent in the heart of the ar-ea for evening services.

Those living near the church onMontclair Drive and Park Roadsay the noise levels are hell on theears.

The church ran evening servic-es on the open land for the weekof 15 to 21 October.

A concerned 37-year-old residentsays his seven-year-old son has beenunable to do his reading homeworkdue to the racket caused by thechurch’s praise and worship ses-sions.

“I am a churchgoing man, but thischurch has services from 19:00 until21:30 and their music is really loud. Most of the residentsworkduring theday and come home to relax, but wecannot even do that. We just wish thechurch would have more considera-tion for the people living close by andlower the volume of the music,” hesays.

However the pastor, Peter Lotter-ing, defends the church saying mem-bers had obtained signatures fromthe community before setting up onthe open land.

The property is owned by Commu-nicare, which runs the MontclairPlace Retirement Village.

Lottering was unable to say howmany signatures had been obtained

in the door-to-door campaign to getthe public’s permission.

“We went through all the properchannels in obtaining permission tohave services on the field. A numberof people agreed to us setting up ourchurch,” Lottering explains.

The concerned resident wantsproof of the petition.

“I live 140m away from the church.I did not givemypermission for themto operate. It used to be so peacefulhere, but now I feel victimised byGod,” he says.

Xolisa Qumza (22) from Bongweni,a kilometre away, says he heard loudmusic blaring on Thursday.

“I couldn’t even watchGenerationswithout turning the volume on itsloudest. We can’t sleep before 22:00 asthe noise keeps us awake,” he fumes.

Ward councillorGoawaTimmsaysthe church approached her for per-mission, but because the land is pri-vate property it was not her decisionto make.

“I said they could set up thechurch there as long as they ap-plied for the necessary ablutionfacilities and had a public partici-pation process. It is up to the com-munity to decide whether or notthey want a church operatingfrom a tent on an open field,” shesays.

Lottering says the purpose ofthe crusade was to reach out tothose in need. “It is unfortunatethat people are unhappy. We doapologise for any inconveniencecaused, but we did try and reachout to the larger community to get

their permission,” says Lottering.“Our aim was to reach out to thosewho may not know about the churchand the services we offer.”

Rick Brosens, Communicare’sproperty director, says the churchdid their homework by asking thesurrounding residents if they had ob-jections.

“Permission was granted to thechurch for theweek of the 14 to 21 Oc-tober. The church requested the useof the premises after also asking theresidents around the erf and present-ed signatories from them that theyhad no objection. Communicare thenagreed to the use of the erf for theabove specified time frame on condi-tion that the site is left clean and inthe same state in which they foundit,” he says.

When asked whether or not Com-municare would lease the land to thechurch again, officials said that “ap-plications are considered ona case bycase basis and on its own merit”.

Four Aloe Road Junior High School pupils– two in Grade 9, one in Grade 8 and one inGrade 7 – were involved in the altercationwhich saw them drawing knives, explainsprincipal Brian Arendse. All were taken to a day hospital, one in a

serious condition.Bronagh Casey, the spokesperson for pro-

andwas transferred to theMagnolia Hospitalon Thursday. He was in a stable conditionand had indicated to one of his teachers thathe was fine at the time,” she says.Casey confirms that this is the third report-

ed stabbing incident at the school.Arendse says all the pupils will be expected

to return to school and face the necessary dis-ciplinary action. “We still need to investigatewhy the pupils had been fighting, but thesethings happen. We do have all the necessaryprecautionarymeasures in place to deal withsuch incidents,” he says.Aloe Junior High has 1 100 pupils and only

offers Grade 7, 8 and 9.The provincial education department is

supporting the school with day security andafter-school protection.“We have also requested that police in-

tionship with the police.“We have previously arranged with police

to search the pupils. We also do randomsearches and confiscate any dangerous itemspupils have on them,” Arendse adds. The school does not have metal detectors. This will be addressed following a commit-

ment by the provincial education depart-ment to have these machines installed.Pupils and staff have received counselling

and conflict management interventions fol-lowing the incident.

TAXI BOSSES have lashed out at theCity of Cape Town for excluding themin its multi-modal transport system.

Taxi operators claim they have beenleft out of the loop and say the City is un-dermining the role they played in provid-ing transport. While some taxi owners support the in-

tegrated transport system, they say theCity refuses to include them in theirplans.Henry “Hawk”Williams, the secretary

general of the Mitchell’s Plain Taxi Fo-rum, says the taxi industry is not beingsubsidised, yet it moves 80% of commut-ers who travel by public transport. He calls for the industry not to be de-

stroyed by the City’s implementation ofits own transport plan.Williams says the forum was not made

aware of the recent unveiling of a newtransport authority incorporating alltrain, bus and taxi services in the West-ern Cape. However, City officials insist they are

not excluding the taxi industry in themetropole’s transport plans. The new transport authority, branded

Transport for Cape Town, was unveiledlast week. The aim is to eventually uniteall train, bus and taxi services across thePeninsula.

Brett Herron, the Mayoral Committeemember for Transport, Roads and Storm-water, says the establishment and func-tion of Transport for Cape Town was ex-plained to taxi bosses at two separatemeetings, “with the purpose of establish-ing one public transport network in CapeTown, ofwhich the taxi industry forms animportant part”.Meanwhile, members of the Mitchell’s

Plain Taxi Forum fear the City will at-tempt to drive them out of their routeswith the introduction of the MyCiTi busservice next year. Taxi owners say theyare still in thedarkabout theplanned roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service in Mitch-ell’s Plain and Khayelitsha. They say this stems from a lack of con-

sultation from the City.Herron says the affected taxi associa-

tions “have been consulted, orwill be con-sulted in the coming days. So far, theCity’s proposals have been met positive-ly”.He says affected operators were able to

significantly shape the Integrated RapidTransit System during the first phase im-plementation of the service, including se-lection of routes, vehicle specificationsand the structure of the business plan.“TheCitywill offer the sameopportuni-

ties to the above-mentioned parties in theN2 Express Service and Phase 2 whichwill expandMyCiTi into the Metro SouthEast,” Herron adds.

RESIDENTSof informal settle-ments in Strandfontein aretakingownershipof their com-munities.

A handful of men and women, some of which had previouslybeen employed under nationalgovernment’s Community WorkProgramme, are continuing with

their gardening projects despitehaving left the project after gov-ernment terminated ProudlyManenberg’s contract as the im-plementing agent. The programme is an employ-

ment safety net providing accessto a minimum level of regularwork on an ongoing basis.RuwaydaCurnow, who lives in

Oppermans Oord, says she waspaid R520 a month while em-

ployed by the programme tocleanup the community and saysshe, along with like-minded lo-cals, will continue to clean uptheir areas.“We have made rock gardens

at the informal settlements inStrandfontein. We began thisproject on 5 July and now main-tain the gardens,” she says.Over 40 people had previously

been involved with the greeninginitiative, explains Curnow.“There were 43 of us who used tohelp with these gardens; 11 wereemployed through the pro-gramme. The rest were all volun-teers.”Rockeries were set up at the

Masincedane informal settle-ment as well as at Plot 9 in CampRoad in Strandfontein.Lynne Segers (39) who had also

been employed in the pro-gramme, says she will continuewith the community projects tokeep busy as she is currently un-employed.Segers, who is a recovering

drug addict, says she does gar-dening to keep her away fromdrugs. “Landscaping keeps mebusy and away from that. I havea son who is two and I bring himalong so that he can learn how tolook after the environment.“Even though we live in an in-

formal settlement, this is ourcommunity and we want it tolook nice,” Segers adds.

Proudly Manenberg chairper-son, Mario Wanza, says the or-ganisation is not dependent onwhether government funds themor not. “Our struggle is to bringan end to the suffering of the poorand the two people from Strand-fontein are standing with us de-spite government’s attempts tolure them away by offering themR520 a month,” he says. Both Segers andCurnowdecid-

ed not to join the new implement-ing agent and continue to volun-tarily do community work.“People are showing their com-

mitment to a better life and aresending a clear message that at-tempts by government to divideand rule is not working and tak-ing awaymoneywill not stopus,”Wanza says.Betty Jansen (41) has been liv-

ing at the Masincedane informalsettlement for 18 years. She saysvolunteering is her way of givingback. “It is important for peopleto take pride in the spaces inwhich they live. I live here anddon’t expect other people to beau-tify my living space,” Jansensays.

A DISABLED dog breeder haslost his only source of income af-ter his Rottweiler was shot deadby a policeman.

The thoroughbred was shot twicefrom behind and suffered for 20minutes before dying.

Tafelsig resident MoegametSedick Leukes (54) has been a dogbreeder for nine years and ismourning the loss of his best friend.

He says two officers jumped overthe back wall of his house in Silver-myn Street, breaking down the zinccovering of a Wendy house beforeshooting the dog.

It is understood that the policemen hadseen a man jumping over the wall and theygave chase.

Sedick says the officer had alleged that thedog had bitten him, whereafter he openedfire.

However, Stella Lawrence (55), who liveson the property, counters this.

“I asked to see the bite marks and the offic-er showed me two scratches on his leg. Therewas no blood. His pants were not torn,” shefumes.

The three families living on property wereall extremely fond of him.

The dog, Bruno, was three years old.“They killed my dog unnecessarily. He on-

ly attacks on command. Only I and my bestfriend know the code which he responds tofor him to attack,” says Leukes solemnly.

“Mating season is inNovember. I nowonly

have a female dog,” he seethes.Leukes has opened a case with the Mitch-

ell’s Plain police as well as the SPCA.The dog breeder’s best friend, Cassiem

Davids (54), says the dog was tied up whenhe was shot.

“The police say I let the dog loose, but Bru-no is always tied up. Pictures taken immedi-ately after the incident are proof of the factthat the dog was in fact tied up,” Davids says.

The breeding enthusiast says police hadno right to shoot his dog.

“That was my only income. I sell the Rott-weilers to the prisons. I was a professionallong-distance driver, but can no longer driveas I was in an accident three years ago. Thevehicle overturnedwith ahorse and trailer,”he explains.

But the police and the SPCA claimed thatthey had no record of the reported incident.

REMEMBER, remember thefifth of November.

GuyFawkes is celebrated annual-ly on this day.

Throngs of people head to areasdesignated for setting off fireworks, while others get in on the fun bypelting others with eggs and smear-

ing toothpaste. The day is named after the

Englishman who planned thefailed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 inEngland.People’s Post interns Luzuko Zini

and Tarren-Lee Habelgaarn askedreaders if they felt celebrating theevent was still relevant.

NO POINT: Christine Dict says shehas outgrown the celebration. “It isjust useless because there is notmuch to it. I used to celebrate itwhen I was young and would buy firecrackers.”

THINK OF OTHERS: Craig Erasmusbelieves people have to be considerate. “It is okay, but people don’t takethe animals into consideration. Idon’t even know the history behindthe day.”

NOTHANKS: Tembisa Sabela says: “Idon’t celebrate it because I don'tsee the meaning of the day. I thinkit is just a bunch of people lookingfor an excuse to act out of character.”

OLD SCHOOL: While growing up Alroy Conradie celebrated Guy Fawkeswith much enthusiasm, but hedoesn’t any more. “I think it died abit because people don’t celebrate itlike they did years ago.”

GREAT SPORTS: Nazeem Cupidofeels Guy Fawkes is “too much fun”to ignore. He says he enjoys the fireworks and throwing paint at people.“Every year we have fun with fireworks at the beach.”

TRADITIONS: Sharne Tyutu says although she feels bad for the animals,Guy Fawkes is a tradition she enjoys.“I hope I will be allowed to go to thebeach this year. We sit and eat whilewatching the fireworks.”

IRRELEVANT: Kevin Ashton says GuyFawkes is a waste of time as thereis no relevance to celebrating it inSouth Africa. “People don’t realisethe affect it has on animals. It’s a hazard and has nothing to do with us.”

DANGER: While it is very dangerousLorezene de Wee says Guy Fawkesis still a lot of fun. “My friends andI have gotten hurt many times playing with fireworks, but we still lookforward to the day every year.”

Cheap justice?IN ONE case the wheels of justice have cometo a halt. President Jacob Zuma has with-drawn his lawsuit against cartoonist Jonath-an “Zapiro” Shapiro. The Zapiro cartoon, published by a Sunday

newspaper in September 2008, depicts thepresident with a shower on his head and hispants undone. “Lady Justice” is pinned downby former ANC Youth League president Ju-lius Malema, Cosatu general secretary Zwel-inzima Vavi, SA Communist Party generalsecretary Blade Nzimande and ANC secre-tary generalGwedeMantashe, all saying: “Gofor it, boss”.Zuma had, at the time, been acquitted of

rape. He also had a long-running battleagainst corruption charges with Thint, aFrencharmscompany. The corruption charg-es have been dropped as the National Prose-cuting Authority reportedly said there wasrecorded evidence of interference in the case. The R5m lawsuit – first reduced to R4m

with the impairment of dignity aspectdropped, then reduced to R100 000 for defama-tion and an unconditional apology – has beengoing since December 2008.It was withdrawn yesterday.Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj

said Zuma wanted to avoid setting a legalprecedent which could limit “the public exer-cise of free speech”.Zapiro has called it a “great victory for free-

dom of expression, satire and for comment”.The political power play cannot be ignored.Political figureheads are fair game for the

media. These may all be true.Putting aside the issues of freedom of ex-

pression, the imagery of the rape of Lady Jus-tice leaves a bitter aftertaste.Perhaps without intending to, the cartoon

may be seen as transcending the boundariesof good taste.Whatdoes the cartoon say toanywoman who has ever been violated like this? This country has a very high incidence of

rape – committed by men of all backgrounds.Making fun of politicians in this way may

reverberate with the sound of a hollow victo-ry after all.

. There have been so many com-plaints about problematic lanes inMitchell’s Plain. Why is it so diffi-cult for the authorities to come toclosure with the results of their de-cision about the park and lane be-hind Denver Close in ColoradoPark? The price of the portion ofland has been changed so manytimes. What’s the problem with theauthorities? Some want a fortunefor a small portion of land and theydon’t live here. Why must thosewhohad the benefits of the past gov-ernment have the last say on theprice of the land? We are still wait-ing to hear what our fate is. We livehere and only we know what is go-ing on in our area – not the one wholives inBeaconBay. So, subcouncil, what else do you still want to know? The evil is haunting us while youdecide each year. Frustrated resi-dent

. The lane closure issue will con-tinue, with no-one taking the bullby the horns! The City says this, theCity says that! But the City doesn’tlivehere anddon’t have to dealwithit! I have written a letter to my law-yer and he has subsequently drawnup another letter, in which he alsohas all the correspondence betweenthe City and me, pleading for thelane closures over the years. Theletter states that should anythinghappen to me or any of my familyin the lane – inmy backyard – I holdthe City responsible. Yes, I can and,by God, will sue the City.

. The thugs break in at the backof the house. We have a lane that wewould like the council to close. There are three houses that comesout into the lane. There’s a shortstreet on the side of the lane and apark on the other side. Adam

I TAUGHTat TafelsigHigh for 20 years, 12 yearsof which as principal. The school and communi-ty became my whole life. I left in 2008. My timeas principal (1996-2008) was during the most dif-ficult times in our education history. However, my motivation for this letter is not

the past. I am saddened to read about the schoolgrounds to be subdivided and shared with an-other high school alongside (“New secondaryschool for Tafelsig”, People’s Post, 2 October). What a slap in the face of the Tafelsig communi-ty.Another high school is definitely needed, but

not on the Tafelsig High School premises.During my time as principal, and before the

building of Mitchell’s Heights School, we – allprincipals, governing bodies and communityleaders –were consulted about the future educa-tional needs of the community. It was during atime when people could not get placement atTafelsig High because the school was full.We recommended the building of a high

school as there were already five primaryschools in the area. The education departmentwent ahead in building another primary schooland accommodated grades 1 to 9. Needless tosay, that didn’t work. The grades 8 and 9 werethere alongside grade 1s and 2s. I’m aware of theproblems. I understand that Mitchell’s Heightsnow took the decision not to have grades 8 and9 any more. I fully support this. Now there is an accommodation problem for

high school learners in Tafelsig! The views ofall the principals, governing bodies, religiousand other leaders in the community as far backas 2002 were discarded.According to your article the spokesperson

for the provincial education department said:“The existing Tafelsig High School will receive

a school hall in recognition of their willingnessto cede some of their ground to the new school.”What an insult! The school must get a hall! It

is a right for all schools to have halls. Tafelsigis one of only a few high schools in Mitchell’sPlainnot tohaveone. What did theother schoolsdo to get halls?I think theTafelsig communitywill be further

marginalised by this development. There willnot be room for future sportsfield development.I would like some answers to the following:1. Was this another unilateral decision by the

education department?2. Did the school governing body agree to this?

And, if so, are theminutes of themeeting wherethe decisionwas taken available andwas the de-cision communicated to the school community?3.Were the school grounds officially subdivid-

ed and the building plans approved by the coun-cil? (I suspect the current school’s water, sewer-age and electricity connections will just be ex-panded).4. Was there a public participation process?5. Were logistical problems like starting, peri-

ods, interval and closing times for the twoschools taken into consideration? My suggestion to the department will be that,

as a temporary measure, you can go ahead withthe temporary school because of the accommo-dation need (your own short-sightedness).But please build the new school more to the

south. There is enough open space and it willbe closer to where the need is. Tafelsig High isrelatively close to Spine Road High and BeaconHill High. The community of Tafelsig deservemore than

two high schools on a ground meant for one.JJ KRUGERKuils River

TARREN-LEE HABELGAARN

THERE was a time when he could give“his boys” what their hearts desired. Anice-cream while on a trip to the beach, acomfortable home, quality schooling andeating out at restaurants.

Now all 73-year-old Ettiene de Wet wants togive the three boys in his guardianship is aroof over their heads and food on the table. All they want – and need – is a place wherethey will feel safe and can call home.

While not their legal guardian, De Wet hasbeen looking after the three sons of his formerdomestic worker since 2000, after their moth-er slipped into alcoholism and neglectedthem.

The names of the boys are known to Peo-ple’s Post.

At retirement 13 years ago, he offered shel-ter to his domestic worker, then pregnantwith twins, and her family. “Ten days beforeshe gave birth, the father of her twins died,”De Wet says.

“She started drinking and wasn’t takingcare of the children. On one occasion I hadto break down the door of the house so I couldfeed them.”

When the twins were nine months old, DeWet gave their mother an ultimatum. “I toldher she must either take her children andleave my property or leave them with me andvisit them.”

She opted to leave the twins and anolder son with De Wet, who hasbeen caring for them since. “Wehaven’t seen her in eight years.”

At first the blended familylived a comfortable life – settlingin De Wet’s Muizenberg home, wearing only the best clothes andattending top schools.

“We always had more thanenough food, with all their fa-vourites,” an emotional De Wetsays. “Every second Friday wewould eat out and when we wentto the beach I would buy them ice-creams.”

In the last few years demands on De Wet’spension outstripped his income, and the fami-ly has experienced an about-turn in lifestyle.

The family has lost everything – their Mui-zenberg home, De Wet’s “luxurious left-handdrive American” car and their lifestyle.

“It became very expensive to provide forme and the boys. My pension was not enough

to cover all our costs.”He was forced to sell his house and car to

make ends meet. “We moved to a friend’shouse in Delft, but it was very dangerous –I was almost shot. I decided it was unsafe and

we had to get out.”That was the beginning of many

relocations for De Wet and theboys – each place provided itsown problems and obstacles.Hesays people he had rented fromasked him to stand surety forloans, which they gambled away.“So now my pension is even less,as I need to cover the monthlypayments. At another place I dis-

covered they were selling drugsfrom the house.”

De Wet and the children havesettled at the home of a good Sa-maritan in Tafelsig, Mitchell’s

Plain. The boys now attend a local school, while De Wet does his best to get money orfood by begging on the streets. “Every day Itake to the streets, but most of the time themoney I manage to get is not enough for a loafof bread.”

Still, he remains positive.“There really are some good people on

earth. Although I am not able to provide formy children like I used to, I still want to givethem the best,” he says.

“One day we were coming back from thebeach when a man offered us a lift. I was car-rying some bags and the driver asked if wehad been shopping. I explained that the bagswere filled with food I had begged for.

“The man took us home and, when we gotout of the car, he gave me a R100. I was sograteful and this proves there are still goodpeople around.”

De Wet used the money to buy new shoesfor the children.

And although he takes to the streets in thehope people will give him money, De Wet sayshe will never allow the boys to accompanyhim.

“I am embarrassed to be doing this at myage, but I just want to give the boys the best,”he says.

“I still take them to the beach, although wecan no longer indulge in our usual ice-creams. Just being able to enjoy being togeth-er is what really counts.”

IN A BID to streamline andmodernise thepayment and management process tocouncil property tenants, the City of CapeTownwill improve certain aspects at theirhousing offices across the metropole.

This will see these offices and housing di-rectorate depots revamped to change theirpresentation, as well as systems, policies andprocedures improved.

Backlogs in service delivery relating totransfer of tenancies, unlawful occupation, debt and indigent grant management, contra-vention of lease agreements and anti-socialbehaviour will also be tackled.

House visits will be conducted to establishany contraventions to the Agreement ofLease, update occupant circumstances andconditions of the dwelling, as well as deter-mine any ‘rent racking’ and the existence ofinformal structures.

Confirmation that lease agreements existfor all legal tenants to ensure compliance withand accountability to the conditions will alsobe looked into.

These interventions are necessary to im-prove service delivery within the housing di-rectorate, Mayoral Committee Member forHuman Settlements, Ernest Sonnenberg, ex-plains.

“The directorate manages approximately43 300 rental units, 21 203 home ownershipagreements, 11 000 hostel beds, 11 old age com-plexes, 2 983 site and service plots and 200 spe-cial leases from 38 decentralised Housing Es-tate Offices, five Sales Offices and 16 mainte-nance depots across the city,” he says.

“Modernisation of our existing service wasdeemed a top priority to improve the serviceswe provide to our clients.”

Other planned improvements include cus-tomer service at Housing Estate Offices andan effective maintenance programme to en-sure the sustainability of the public housingstock. Sonnenberg adds: “Implementing theseinterventions will not only assist us in offer-ing efficient service delivery, improving con-trol measures, instilling good governance andbuilding good relationships, but will also in-crease revenue collection to the City.”

WEunwittingly invite undesirable chem-icals into our homes. We need to assesshow they impact our lives andhowwe canbreak the cycle.

Every day the media bombards us abouthow we are under assault from germs andbacteria. While our environment is inhabitedwith all kinds of nasty goggas, the reality iswe simply cannot ever escape them. The fact is, we all carry a kilo or so of germs

and microbes in and on our bodies. We havearound 10 000 different varieties of these littlecritters living with us. Research confirmsthat their presence in our systems keeps ushealthy, overturning conventional wisdomthat all microbes are bad for us.On the other hand, there is nothing wrong

with keeping clean. Improved personal hy-giene is one of the reasons modern humanslive so long. While we should wash our handsproperly and regularly, we do not need to usepotent anti-microbial soaps and cleaners ina vain attempt to sterilise our personal envi-ronment.The problem is that anti-microbial soaps

kill many of our beneficial microbes that arepart of our personal environment, upsettingthe balance. So, instead of helping,we canun-wittingly harmourselves, not tomention eve-rything downstream.Anti-bacterial chemicals like triclosan are

liberally added to household cleaners likedishwashing soap, toothpaste and personalcare products. Besides killing good bacteria, studies have linked them to liver damage, dermatitis, reduced muscle strength, sterili-

ty and other health issues. Because they bindto fats, they canmigrate in to breastmilk, cre-ating unnecessary risks to children. The useof triclosan is presently unregulatedin South Africa. These products encourage the de-

velopment of “super-bacteria,” ac-cording to a recent release by the USFood and Drug Administration(FDA). This happens by their killingsome, but not all, dangerous bacte-ria. Remaining germsdevelop resist-ance to the chemicals as well as oth-er treatments like antibiotics. Thisoveruse of otherwise useful chemicals anddrugs can undermine our remaining lines ofdefence against some dangerous infections.A further hidden risk is that much of this

chemical residue ends up in sewage works, then enters the broader environment. This ismagnified up the entire food chain, from

plankton and algae, then up throughfish, amphibians and birds, eventu-ally ending up in larger mammalslike dolphins and people. Anotherworry is that many chemicals breakdown into even more toxic compo-nents like cancer-causing dioxins.Triclosan is just one of several nas-

ty chemicals advertisers scare us in-to bringing into our homes, whilefailing to inform us of the downside

for ourselves, our neighbourhood and our en-vironment. After using them, the active com-pounds go down our drain, into treatmentworks, then into FalseBaywhere they can ac-

cumulate in fishwe catch and eat. This is howour choices can directly affect both ourhealth and that of our environment. We really don’t need these products. If you

want natural anti-bacterial properties to any-thing just add tea-tree, thyme or rosemary oilto your mouthwash or hand soaps. You can replace toxic, chemical-based

cleaners with natural products like whitevinegar, lemon and harmless chemicals likebicarbonate of soda. Bicarb and vinegar willclean grubby pots and pans; vinegar or lemonjuicewill vanquishmould and disinfect chop-ping boards and surfaces. Add a few drops ofrosemary oil as a disinfectant and you aresorted.Traditional cleaning products not only

save money, but preserve our health and theenvironment. So think twice before purchas-ing chemical-based cleaners – there is usuallya cheaper, safer and effective natural substi-tute just a Google away!

“TRAVEL business class everyday.”

Yes, step into the latest edition tothe Tata family, the Indigo Manza, and you will feel as if you havestepped onto an aeroplane. The car’sslogan certainly lives up to its features.Launched in South Africa in Sep

tember, this nifty sedanhas improvedimmensely from its first years on thelocal market. And while its featureshave improved, its price will suit thepockets of the average man. It is theolder brother of the Indica Vista. There are two models: the base

line Ini and the designated Ignis. On a test drive of the Ignis, I was

pleasantly surprised at just howmuch the manufacturer worked atgetting the vehicle to a standard thatcan compete with any vehicle in itsrange. While the car may look similar to

its predecessor, it is slightly larger ata length of 4,4m and a breadth of1,7m.The large interior and boot space

is astonishing, as a look from the outside does not indicate this. There also ample legroom at the front andback. Both the Ini and Ignis comes with

15inch, magged wheels, air conditioner, driver and passenger heightadjustable seats, lumber support(driver and passenger), Bluetooth radio/CD player, tilt adjustable steeringand electric windows. The only difference between the

two is the electric sidemirror adjustment, multifunctional steeringwheel, ABS brake system, driver andpassenger airbags, rear window demisters and fog lamps at the front.Another clever addition to both

models is the colour of the tachometer needle. It turns red when the engine moves closer to the maximumrevolutions. There is also an immobilizer and central locking system, anda factory warranty of three years or100 000km, roadside assistance forthree years or unlimited kilometres,a corrosion warranty for three yearsor unlimited kilometres and a serviceplan for four years or 100 000km.The Ini is priced at R119 995; and

the Ignis at R134 995.

SAFETY is always one of the biggest aspects whenbuying a car.

Questions are always asked about how many airbags there are or how the braking systemdiffers fromthe previous model. But the main safety feature ina car is seat belts, says ER24 spokesperson DerrickBanks.“How often do we drive to work or home without

our seat belts on because ‘it is just around the cornerand nothing could happen to me’ or ‘I won’t be inan accident because I’m a good driver’?”Some of the excuses paramedics have heard, he

says, are fears that the seat belt will keep peopletrapped in the car in case of an accident. Others saythe seat belts are uncomfortable or people feel they

don’t need a seat belt because the car has airbags.Banks cautions: “Then you or your children are in

volved in an accident and have sustained serious orfatal injuries. We take it for granted that nothing couldhappen to us. Most fatalities in accidents are because the occupants of the car were ejected orthrown around inside the car as the car rolled or collided with another vehicle.”He says each day ER24 paramedics see acci

dents and how children and adults alike are injured.“When it comes to children, parents ask ‘how did thishappen’ and ‘why is my child dead’? Where do parents draw the line in safety for our children?Especially when our children are travelling with other roadusers and the vehicle they are using is overloadedalready.”

Banks says paramedics have seen a Toyota Tazzwith eight school children in the car. “That was notthe first time it has been seen done and the samedriver has been pulled over and warned by necessary authorities of actions.”Children are extremely vulnerable in collisions. To

keep them safe, Banks gives the following advice:. Children should be seated in the car and in a car

seat if possible.. Never travel with your child on your lap.. Never share a seat belt with your child.. Your child or any child has no say or choice not

to wear a seat belt. It is the responsibility and legalobligation of the driver to make sure they wear it.It just a takes a few seconds to buckle up to help

save a life.

relation the basic mathematics needed in the statistics world.Due to the growing need to address

statistical development inSouthAfrica and to enable learners to understand that statistics is part of everyday life, UWC, theWestern Cape Education Department (WCED) andStatsSA came together to create aprogramme aimed at producing aspecialised body of educatorswho areboth enthusiastic and wellinformedabout mathematics and statistics.Speaking at the certification cere

mony, WCED Chief Educational Specialist Mbulelo Bali noted that teacher development is a very importantchallenge – especially in the contextof South Africa.“The South African matric results

are very low every year,” said Bali.“Part of the reason for that is thereis always new educational contentthat the teachers were not previouslyexposed to, and when this contentgets to the classrooms the teachersgrapple to deal with it, and this impacts the quality of the lessons.”

Ever wanted to be a Forensic Scientist? A Dentist? A Pharmacist?A Psychologist? A Chartered Accountant? Or even a High Court Judge?

However you see your future, if you ve got ambition, ability and drive UWC is the place to be!

IFYOUare a school leaver or justlooking for a great career, it’sdefinitely worth your while to

consider the great opportunitiesthat just keep coming out of the Information Technology industry.

While virtually every other type ofemployment takes a hit in thesetense economic times, demand forthose skilled in network engineering, programming andweb development remain strong across all skilllevels.

What do IT professionals do?Network engineers are responsi

ble for maintaining internet and office networks, making sure computers and their users can always keepin touch with each other.Technicians, such as those who

have obtained A+ certification status, are responsible for ensuringthat thephysical guts of the information

age – the computers themselves – arerunning in tiptop shape.Programmers and web developers

write the software which runs onthese computers and networks. They create the programmes or

the sets of instructions that computers read and carry out.

What’s so great about being an ITprofessional?Studies showthat ITworkershave

more job security, more choiceswhen deciding who to work for andmakemoremoney, faster, thanmostother kinds of occupations.Thegreat thingabout IT is that it’s

always changing and evolving, bringing more opportunities fornewcomers to get their foot in thedoor. If there is any field where a hard

working young person canprogress rapidly and quickly reachthe top of their game, with all the rewards that go with it, it must be IT.You could be a professional in the

workforce, earning serious moneyin as little as six months.

How do I become an IT professional? The easiest and most reliable way

toget into IT is to get an internationallyrecognised IT qualification like

those offered by Microsoft’s MCP,CompTIA, Oracle and ECCouncil.IT jobs are demanding and need

people who know their stuff. That’s why internationallyrecog

nised certification is such a goodidea, because if you pass your testsand get certified, you know you’reready to take on any challenge thatcomes your way, guaranteed! All the major IT companies in the

world offer certification in theirproducts and “platforms”, to makesure there is always a supply ofqualified professionals who knowhow to operate them like true experts.Employers know they can rely on

certified staff to deliver, so it’s notsurprising that over 70% of themsay they won’t hire uncertified staffif they have the choice.

Can I work overseas with my ITcertification? It’s not called “internationalrec

ognised” for nothing because thesequalifications are accepted all overthe world. If you are a certified professional

doors open for you from America toDubai and Europe. And if things are still sweet for IT

workers in SA, they are even betterabroad.IT recruitment is up 11% in the

United States where a 2009 Computerworldmagazine survey identified web developers, network administrators and information security managers as jobs that receivedhigherthanaverage pay hikes. In Europe a survey of 300 compa

ny managers showed that twothirds of themwere planning to hireadditional IT staff in the comingyear, with a third reporting: “ITworkers are getting harder to find.”

Who offers the best and cheapestIT training in SA?IT Business Campus (ITBC) has

over a decade of experience when itcomes to supplying certified professionals to bluechip corporate clients and has managed to leverageit’s influence to provide a costeffective route to getting certified. This includes the traditionally

costly ProMetric testing which isavailable at all ITBC campuses.

ITBC offers hundreds of certification options from every availablecompany and is the cheapest youwill find anywhere – guaranteed. The ITBC advantage lies in it’s ad

vanced selfstudy format backed byexpert online instructors and advanced multimedia controls thatreplicate the classroom experiencewherever you can plug in a computer and log into the internet.Access to the ITBC hub and

courseware provides everything astudent needs to achieve internationally recognised IT certification, including labs, exercises and practice exams. It’s never been easier to make the

leap into a growing industry and receive world class training.

Sounds great, how do I find outmore?ITBCwill hold open days fromNo

vember and offers discounts of up to50% for those who book courses online. To learn more about ITBC, takean aptitude test or discuss your certification options and career pathwith our expert advisors.Contact them on (021) 671 3104,

While India, Singapore andCroatia will debut at the tourna-ment, the green and gold ofSouth Africa will not be amongthe 13 countries competing.

Seacrest swing for promotionLIAM MOSES

SEACREST CRICKET CLUBhave set their sights on a secondconsecutive promotion afterwinning the Western ProvinceCricket Association (WPCA) 2Aleague last season.

Formed 11 years ago, the Rock-lands club have already made aname for themselves with their im-pressive results in Cape Town ama-teur cricket competitions.Last season Seacrest beat Hotten-

tots Holland at Sahara Park New-lands in the final of theWPCAAMA20 as well as winning their league.Alan Thorne, the club chairman

and first team captain, says his sidewill look to shock their more illus-trious opposition and win promo-tion again this year.“It’s a new division (and) we need

to adapt as quickly as possible. It’snot that we will not be able to getpromotion again, but I will say thatcommitment is key.“That is what we have been striv-

ing for,” says Thorne.“We have played four games and

the level is notmuchdifferent to the2A. We lost against Fish Hoek and

Northerns Goodwood, but we wonagainst Khayelitsha andYorkshire. These are clubs who have been inthe first division 1D league for threeormore years. I ampleasedwith theway we went about those games be-cause they were good wins for us.We just got promotion to the first di-vision and now we are beating the

top teams there. It is our intentionto get promotion again.”The club was formed on 2001, af-

ter Thorne and a few other cricket-ers played a friendly against anoth-er club and decided they wanted toplay competitively. The club started off in the 2C

league and gained promotion to the

2B league after just two seasons. In2005 they won promotion to the 2Aleagueand last seasonwerepromot-ed to 1A league.Thorne, 41, believes the team’s ex-

cellent form last season and the twotrophies they claimed were purelythe result of camaraderie.“We went on a tour to Port Eliza-

beth last year before the start of theseason. Getting the guys away be-fore the start of the season is alwaysnice and that is where it started –with the bonding in Port Eliza-beth,” says Thorne, adding theteam “came back very positive andwe set ourselves the goal (to) winthe league”.Seacrest currently has three sen-

ior teams, and the club’s playerscome fromMitchell’s Plain, Strand-fontein and surrounding areas likeGrassy Park.Thorne says the team’s foremost

motivation for wanting to move upthe ranks of amateur cricket is to at-tract some of the many players wholive in Mitchell’s Plain but play forclubs outside the area.“We want to gain more players.

We have the guys here, but we feelthat we can do with some more ex-perienced players,” says Thorne.“There are a lot of players who

leaveMitchell’sPlainonaSaturdayto play for teams outside of Mitch-ell’s Plain. I feel if we keep our guysin tact here thenwe canwin promo-tion again to a higher league.”He adds theywant to build a club-

house at the Rocklands Sports Com-plex in the near future.

Walking the talkto raise fundsLIAM MOSES

INSTEAD of throwing a party, aMitchell’s Plain community work-er will celebrate his 50th birthdayby tackling a 50km walk to raisefunds for charity.KeithMeyer, fromStrandfontein,

is founder of Making an ImpactThrough Sport (MITS), an NGOwhich provides extra-mural sportand physical education coaching atseveral schools in Mitchell’s Plain. On Sunday 11 November, the day

after he turns 50, Meyer will walktheDiscovery Cape Times BigWalkin hopes of raising enough moneyto send at least one of the organisa-tion’s 10 unpaid volunteers on acoaching course.“The funds are so that we can pay

towards the training of coaches foreither aqualification in sportsman-agement or coaching science,” saysMeyer.“They help the community and

now they can get something backfrom the community. Hopefully itwill create job opportunities oropen doors for them as coaches.”MITS runs themandated curricu-

lar physical education programmesat 10 schools in Lentegeur, Port-lands, Tafelsig and Rocklands andalso provides coaching for soccer, volleyball, softball andother sports. The organisation works with up

to 1 000 pupils at each school everyweek, and also runs the Mitchell’sPlain girls football league and otherregular sports events for childrenfrom all the schools in Mitchell’sPlain. All the programmes are runby lo-

cal volunteers, aswell as volunteersfrom European countries such asthe Netherlands and Germany.Meyer says he hopes the courseswill help to make the local volun-teers more employable.“Some of them are fortunate in

that they receive stipends from theschools. The schools are able to gen-erate the income and are able to as-sist some of the volunteers,” saysMeyer.“They work for a full year, and

not getting paid takes a lot of com-mitment from the volunteers..”

However, with just over aweek togo until the walk, MITS has not yetraised enoughmoney to send one ofthe volunteers on the course. OnlyR1 500 of the required R8 000 coursecosts for one person has been raisedso far.Meyer hopes to raise the funds by

having people donate towards eachkilometre he walks.Children at the schools where his

organisation works have starteddonating small change towards thecause.Meyer will be joined by a Dutch

volunteer who previously assistedat MITS. She has organised a 10kmwalk in her home town to coincidewith Meyer’s walk. The fundsraised will go towards MITS.The organisation is also collect-

ing second-hand takkies and soccerboots for pupils.Anyone interested in assisting

MITS can contact Meyer on079 597 0012.
