He walked through Town Centre and says he was “astonished” at how many people were living on the streets. Koopman says: “I was walking in the area and just asked people what their Freedom Day was like. Many people were content with their situation. Some people I spoke to have been living on the streets for 20 years al- ready.” He adds many of the people he met were well-dressed and clean. Solomon Philander, ward councillor and Homeless Agency Portfolio Committee mem- ber, explains there is “no accurate statistic of how many people are living in the Town Centre. However, operations are being planned to assess the current condition”. There is also no database of how many peo- ple are sleeping rough. Philander adds he is in the process of estab- lishing a database with various organisa- tions, including the local Network of Care and the City of Cape Town’s Social Develop- ment and Early Childhood Development de- partments. “The City has various pro- grammes in place to assist homeless people. The City has assessment centres in Strand and Mowbray. Mitchell’s Plain has been ear- marked for an assessment centre, but no or- ganisations applied when the City called for proposals,” says Philander. Partnerships with non-governmental or- ganisations which work with homeless peo- ple are supported by the City. Field workers will also be employed through the mayoral expanded public works programme to assist the homeless in Mitchell’s Plain. The City’s Social Development and Early Childhood De- velopment departments have a dedicated portfolio, Homac, which is committed to sup- port and monitor programmes to re-integrate people living on the streets back into society. “I will engage with the Local Network of Care to have a winter plan to assist people living in Town Centre. This will be the foundation for negotiating for an assessment centre in partnership with the network that is ulti- mately responsible for monitoring services to street children in Mitchell’s Plain,” says Phi- lander. Harry Engel tells People’s Post his situation at home forces him to sleep on the streets. “Sometimes there is no food at home and in Town Centre we often get some money to put food on the table. On the streets we escape our problems and this makes things easier for us. Sometimes,” Engel says “our problems get too much.” Local Network of Care chairperson Maude Nelson tells People’s Post there are “no home- less people on the streets”. “Many are on the streets due to poverty, drugs and are strollers who come from homes in the area to Town Centre just to get away from their circumstances at home. There are lots of youth on the streets from as young as nine, and this is shocking. I did a survey with Social Development and found the children go back home at night. It is mostly drug ad- dicts who sleep in the Town Centre and they move to different hotspots. Regular checks are done by the organisation and the depart- ment to assist these people and get them off the street,” says Nelson. She says in many cases foster parents want the children only for the grants they receive. “This creates more problems as more chil- dren are turning to the streets. Currently there is no walk-in assessment centre for homeless people in Mitchell’s Plain and a lack of resources make it difficult for volun- teers to assist these people.” She adds that many shelters in Mitchell’s Plain are full and under-resourced and can’t always assist with placements when needed. “More funds need to be allocated to this cause as there are many people who need help.” Homeless still out in the cold GREAT JOB: Melvin Jantjies, a Parks and Forest worker, goes about his daily routine by keeping the park In Dagbreek Avenue, Westridge, in good condition. A small price to stay fighting fit

Dear reader,

I dedicate this column to my mother whohas been living with breast cancer for morethan two years.

I’ll never forget the day my mom’s doctordiagnosed her cancer and her response aftercrying. She said: “I will have to live withthis”, unlike most people who express fear ofdying at such news.

With these words, my mother had inad-vertently created a message of hope for her-self. Remarkably, she has keptthis hope alive, without inva-sive treatments which ourfamily initially insisted on andretaliated angrily to when shepersistently refused to evenconsider the best known con-ventional treatment available.

Ultimately though, we had torespect my mother’s right tolive her life and manage her ill-ness as she chooses.

Faced with the headstrong, determined matriarch that ismy mother, our family fullysupported her decision andtried everything we could to strengthen herimmune system and give her a fightingchance. Among the many things we havetried are apricot kernels, vitamins, bitterherbs, olive leaf honey, massage, oils, holywater, prayer, dark chocolate and greenjuice.

These have brought some relief, but I amconstantly amazed at how my mother liveswith her pain. She seldom takes painkillersand even now, after a few teaspoons of mor-phine, she has lowered her dose. Throughouther illness, my mother has remained her usu-al talkative, authoritative, smart, wickedlyfunny self. Despite becoming very frail andthin, she has retained her ability to walk andsit while eating her meals, and have a puffor two. Who’s counting?

A woman of remarkable faith, willpowerand resilience, my mother is an inspirationto her six children and many who know her.

My father would differ somewhat, as it hasbecome his destiny to take care of this strong, wilful woman and their three cats and twobirds. His best culinary efforts are often criti-cised by her and feedback to visitors is thathe does not provide her with the balanced di-et she requires. My siblings and I take thiswith a ton of salt as we know how much effortmy father puts into my mother’s meals; infact, everything he does for her.

To keep the peace, we humour my motherin her diatribe against my father, and then

tell him in private we know thetruth. If my mother were toread this, I’d be in trouble.

In the past few months, mymother’s health has deteriorat-ed rapidly and physically shehas become a shell of herformer self, but her mind is asastute as ever and I still turn toher for guidance on matters fi-nance, career and personal.

I do my best to visit herthroughout the week, but Sun-days are our days when we talk, feel sad, reminisce and laugh atour silly comments, especially

my mom’s gossip about my dad. What I lovemost aboutmy interactionwith

my mother is her brilliant sense of humourand ability to appreciate a good joke – notmine though, as I’m notoriously unfunny.

I cannot believe when looking at my moth-er’s beautiful smiling face that she is riddledwith pain; it is only when I focus on how thinand fragile her wrists and limbs are, that thereality of her illness sinks in.

My mother’s journey has been painful, traumatic and terrifying and I am humbledby her strength and grace. She will alwaysbe my heroine and I thank God for every mo-ment I still have with her.

MELISSA PAPIER

MANDALAY residents have voiced theirconcern about the opening of a new liquoroutlet – claiming it could attract the“wrong crowd”.

The concerns were raised after a notice ofintention for a liquor licence application wasmade for 62 Kipling Avenue.

The applicants are Mmeli and Bongani Sot-shononda. They are applying for an off-con-sumption licence where all kinds of liquorcan be sold, but not consumed at the premis-es.

People’s Post visited the area and spoke tosome of the residents, many of whom hadmixed feelings about the opening.

Rudene van Heerden, a neighbour, tellsPeople’s Post the owner has approached theirhousehold to discuss his plans.

“The owner explained that it is not a she-been he would be running, but rather a placewhere people can buy their liquor,” says VanHeerden. “We have no problem with his ap-plication.”

Another resident, Baleniyne Mujuru, sup-ports the application and doesn’t think theoutlet will be a problem.

Other residents in the area, however, feeldifferently, saying they didn’t want to “causetrouble by objecting to the application”.

One resident, who wishes to remain anony-mous for fear of victimisation, says: “Wedon’t want to disturb the peace, so we agreedto support the application. The police and theowner came to me to explain the type of outletthat could be opened. It is understood theplace would be like a ‘take-away’ and patronswon’t be able to drink on the premises. Weare fine with that as long as the patrons don’tpark in front of driveways and urinate on ourwalls.”

Another resident, who declined to give hername, says she is scared that “skollies wouldcome and retaliate against her for objecting”.

“The owner wants to uplift himself, so whoare we to stand in his way? As long as hesticks to the conditions of the application,”she adds.

Sotshononda explains that running an “off-consumption” liquor shop means patronswill only be allowed to purchase their liquor.

Sotshononda says: “I have spoken to theneighbours about my intentions and manywere worried that patrons would urinate ontheir properties and park in their driveways. This is not the case, as trading will take placebetween 09:00 and 21:00 and not on Sundaysor public holidays.”

When People’s Post approached AmosBamoka, spokesperson for the Mandalay/Monteclair CPF subforum, he said it was thefirst time he heard about the application.“We, as a CPF, don’t know about the applica-tion. The owner should have informed the or-ganisation of his intention. Proper channelsneed to be followed by the owner, because ifthe outlet becomes a problem, we as a CPFhave to answer to the community. I under-stand it is a business that will be run. Howev-er, the owner needs to stick to the terms andconditions of the application if granted,” says

Bamoka. He adds that anyone intending to open such

outlets must work within community struc-tures. “Come to us so we can be involved andbe of assistance.”

Spokesperson for the Mitchell’s Plain po-lice, Constable Jerome Voegt, confirms thereare four legal liquor traders in Mandalay.

Voegt says: “The application is in progressand daily and weekly operations are conduct-ed by the Firearm, Liquor and Second-handGoods Unit to see if owners are complyingwith the terms and conditions of their licens-

es.” He adds that all applications are dealtwith by the unit. It takes seven days to com-plete an application and details are sent to theLiquor Tribunal and the City of Cape Townfor rezoning.

“Applications can’t be approved if the re-zoning has not been approved by the City ofCape Town and if there are valid objectionsfrom the community. The officers will go outand speak to the neighbours and gather infor-mation on the application,” he says.

For the Sotshononda liquor license appli-cation businesses and residents are invited

to submit comments, concerns and any otherrelevant information to the Liquor Board.Objections can be lodged with the Mitchell’sPlain police station.

Voegt adds that illegal shebeens can be re-ported to Warrant Officer Jerome Adams on(021) 370 1626.

TRUANT pupils in Eastridge annoy resi-dents as they get up to mischief by steal-ing small items to support their drug hab-it.

Residents claim truant pupils stand onstreet corners from sunrise to sunset – evenin the rain – and get into trouble.

The truants are believed to hang out pri-marily in Gazelle, Giraffe and Buffalostreets.

A resident, who does not want to be namedfor fear of reprisal, tells People’s Post chil-dren as young as 11 are standing on the streetcorners.

“The problem is getting worse and we findthat small things are going missing from ouryards. My car battery was stolen from thecar, as well as my car jack. The dog’s foodand water bowls are not even safe. Oftenthese children are seen at drug houses buy-ing their drugs and they smoke it at nearbyhomes,” he says.

He says police patrolling in the area is of

little help because they drive past the truantswithout searching or taking them back toschool.

Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Con-stable Jerome Voegt says the police have atruancy programme which is run by the So-cial Crime Prevention Unit.

“There are more than 60 schools in Mitch-ell’s Plain and the unit does daily patrols. These school officers liaise with principalsand work with problem pupils at the school. All role players, such as parents, schools, theeducation department and residents, need towork with the police in addressing the prob-lem of truancy,” says Voegt.

Commenting on the issue of a resident’sclaims that police officers drive by the pu-pils, Voegt says: “It isn’t that the police areignoring the problem. Sometimes the van isattending to other complaints or is busy withan operation.”

He adds that if there are no complaints, thepolice can’t address the issue.

Residents can report truancy to the schoolprincipal or to Warrant Officer MornayKleinhans on (021) 370 1636/7.

A GANG-RELATED shooting in BeaconValley has left one man dead and two oth-ers hurt.

The suspects are still at large.OnTuesdayeveningpolice receiveda com-

plaint about a shooting in TwickenhamStreet.

Constable Jerome Voegt, spokesperson forMitchell’s Plain police, says the police foundthe body of a 29-year-old man lying in thestreet. “At the scene, officers also found twoother victims who sustained gunshotwounds while the deceased was declareddead. The men were taken to hospital fortreatment,” says Voegt.

He adds that the motive for the shootingis unknown and no arrests were made.

“We are investigating a murder and a caseof attempted murder,” he says.

Anyone with information can contact De-tective Constable Welcome Nkenke on(021) 370 1738 or (021) 370 1600.

Weekly operationsIn several operations, the police arrested

34 suspects for possession of drugs. They alsoconfiscated various drugs, including tik andheroin. During a routine patrol in SaringaStreet, Westridge on Wednesday afternoon, police stopped and searched a suspicious-

looking woman near a known drug house.“The members confiscated 20 straws of

heroin and 10 small packets of tik,” Voegtsays.

That same day, officers on vehicle patrolin Huisrivier Street, Tafelsig, noticed a sus-picious-looking man coming out of a knowndrug house. After a stop-and-search, the po-lice found 22 packets of tik.

In a separate vehicle patrol in BlaaubergStreet, also in Tafelsig, the police stopped aman walking in the street.

Voegt says: “The man was stopped andsearched and officers confiscated 21 daggastoppe and two small packets of dagga.”

Cellphone robberies warningMitchell’s Plain police are urging resi-

dents not to walk openly with their cell-phones. Voegt says cellphone robberies havebecome a problem in all sectors. “Residentsare walking and talking on their cellphonesand not taking note of their surroundings. Those listening to music on their devicescan’t even hear if a stranger is approaching. This type of behaviour makes residents easytargets for thieves who grab their cellphonesand run away. We are urging all residentsto be vigilant when using their cellphones inpublic,” Voegt said.

Anyone who has information about crimi-nal activity are urged to call their sectorcommanders.

. In response to technical college in Mitch-ell's Plain. We have tried to bring this to ourcommunity, but sadly our community, youth

and our schools have shown very little inter-est. Even though this venture has come to ahalt it will not stop us from bringing much-needed skills to our community. Maybe thistime we can make a real difference.

. I just want to give a big thumbs up to theguys at Home Affairs in Mitchell’s Plain.

When I got there one morning I real-ised I forgot my son’s birth certificateat home. I went back to ColoradoPark. And still the whole proceduretook me less than an hour – that’s in-cluding the trip back home. I think Iwas in the building for about 10 minutes. Iwent on the 20th, and the 20th of the followingmonth I received an SMS to collect. I can onlysay “wow” guys. Jesicha Carlson

. I’m at my wits’ end. I stay in ColoradoPark. Giving to people is not a problem. Myproblem is that the moment I get home I haveno rest. The knocking on my door just doesn’tstop – sometimes until after 21:00. Last weeksomeone told me he’s looking to sell and buysomewhere else because of this.

. Yes, please Pagad, you have to come toNew Woodlands. People are taking freebiesfrom the drug dealer to give him more powerover our children. Even the muslims aren’tashamed to take or to stand in a line to getthese freebies.

. How do the people of Mitchell’s Plain ratethe service of police to combat crime, on ascale of 0 to 10?

. We in Mitchell’s PAIN demand a crimefree environment. We demand service deliv-ery from the police. We deserve it. Pagad: Peo-ple Are GADvol! The cops and neighbour-hood watches are failing us in Mitchell’sPlain. Give Pagad a hearing. They have thecommunity’s interests at heart. Tackle theroot of the problem.

. Petty crime is not receiving the neces-sary attention in Mitchell’s Plain. Residentsmust watch helplessly as their property isplundered. This is very demoralising. Some-thing needs to be done. Organisations suchas Pagad seem like an attractive option.

. Sand dunes are places for breedingcrimes. Why not take it away? This is notabout heritage. It is about stopping someonefrom making a living. How many bodies ofchildren were found? Do you want morefound? Victor

THE Innovation Challenge with HIP2B² kicksoff on Monday 14 May at Spine Road HighSchool, Rocklands, from 14:00 until 16:30.

The Innovation Challenge will see Grade 10learners from Cape Town, Johannesburg andDurban compete for the coveted title of “SouthAfrica’s Top Young Innovator”.

The challenge is focused on inspiring inno-vation in everyday life.

It kicks off with an awareness campaignreaching quintile 1, 2 and 3 schools from eachof the three participating cities, followed bya fun and entertaining educational informa-tion session for the innovators event in eachcity.

Learners who have participated in the infor-mation events are then invited to enter – inteams of two – their own innovation. For the

innovation category they are required to iden-tify a real problem that affects them, their fam-ily or community, from how to simplify every-day chores to how to stay safe, using the appli-cation of science and maths.

From these submissions, five finalist teamswill be selected by a judging panel of repre-sentatives from HIP2B² and other industry ex-perts with a science or technical background.Leading to the final round, the finalists willhave the opportunity to job shadow within theindustry during the September school holi-days and to present their projects and proto-types to a mentor for input and guidance.Thereafter they will head to Johannesburg on18 October for the Innovation Challenge Final.

LIAM MOSES

IN the four short years since its forma-tion, Itheko Sports Athletic Club hasgrown into one of the largest runningclubs in Cape Town and one of the mostwell-known.

The club started when its founder and cur-rent head coach, Farouk Meyer, decided topersonally train two heavily overweight ac-quaintances in 2008. Since then it has grownexponentially into the 1000-member runningforce that it is today.

However, despite this incredible growthand the success of the club’s first race, theJive Slave Route Challenge, which will behosted for the second time on Sunday 27 May,Lion of Africa Itheko has stuck to its originalfocus of working with newcomers to thesport. “The main reason (I started the club)is the instances of ailments like cardio-vascu-lar disease, obesity and high blood pressurethat you see around you all the time withinour community,” says Meyer.

“All it means is that people need to do someform of exercise. Combined with eatinghealthily, it will make a difference. My big-gest letdown is that I don’t have enough timeto document the life-changing experiencesthat people have.”

The club started its speedy growth in sizeimmediately after Meyer took on his firsttrainees and once people witnessed thechange that the men had gone through.

At first the newly-formed club met andtrained at Rondebosch Common, but oncetheir numbers soared to around 400 theywere forced to move to the Rhodes HighSchool in Mowbray.

But the clubhasonceagainoutgrown theirhome and today they will move to a new loca-tion in Willow Road, Observatory.

Meyer says that while the amount of mem-bers on Itheko’s books is impressive, whatis more important is the fact that most werecomplete novices before they joined.

“I have been running for the last 35 yearsbut four years ago I realised that there is noactual running club that caters for peoplewho have never done sport in their lives be-fore.

“What is significant or phenomenal aboutthis running club is that 99 percent of peoplewho are members of this running club have

never done sport before and they have trans-formed their lives by getting healthy and fitthrough running.”

According to Meyer, Itheko is now the big-gest of the 85 running clubs affiliated to West-ern Province Athletics.

The club’s name, Itheko, means a big occa-sion in Xhosa, and over the last two years ithas become increasingly appropriate due tothe growth in size and the inception of theclub’s own road race.

But Meyer says the club aims to make anyrunabig occasion for eachandeverymembertaking part.

“Most people come here and say ‘I cannotrun’. But what we say is that if you can walkyou can run. All we do is teach you the differ-ence between walking and running.

“The type of person who will enjoy beingpart of Itheko is a person that wants to makea difference in their lifestyle in terms of theirhealth. We’ll show you how to enjoy the sportand then you’ll enjoy all of the healthy bene-fits that come with the sport.”

People’s Post is the print media sponsor forthe Lion of Africa Itheko Jive Slave RouteChallenge. For further information or to en-ter the race visit www.itheko.org.

LIAM MOSES

CAPE TOWN football legend and formerSantos head coach, Boebie Solomons, hasbeen appointed as the head of a pro-gramme aimed at improving and develop-ing football in Mitchell’s Plain.

Solomons has assumed the role of directorof coaching at the Mitchell’s Plain Local Foot-ball Association (LFA).

Along with assistant director, Melvin Mac-decorney, he will take up the task of ensuringthat all club coaches in the area have theskills they need to nurture the abundance oftalented young players the LFA believes ispresent in the area.

According to Solomons, his first step sinceaccepting the post has been to help clubs takea more organised approach to coaching theirteams.

“Coaches don’t put enough time into organ-ising their coaching structures. So the firstthing I did was set up a coaching structure.

“Now would be to set up the method ofcoaching; what is important to know at thebeginning and what to coach the different agegroups.

“Like a school curriculum, you have to laya solid foundation, and once you lay thatfoundation you have to add to what it willtake to make a professional player.”

Solomons’ appointment came about afterthe Mitchell’s Plain LFA and Santos FootballClub, his fulltime employers, met to discusshow the two organisations could assist eachother in promoting football.

In order to get local coaches up to the level

desired by the LFA, Solomons and Macdecor-ney will be hosting coaching seminars and fo-rums where they will give in-depth, technicallessons on how to coach players of every agegroup.

“My biggest task is to try to empower thecoaches because they are eager and willingto do something, but don’t know when andhow to do it,” Solomons says.

“I want to give them the tools and ideas sothat when they go out during the week theyknow exactly what to do.”

So far, four seminars have been hostedsince the project kicked off two months ago.The coaching courses and Solomons’ appoint-ment forms part of a grand plan by the LFAto help talented juniors to progress to the pro-fessional ranks.

Rezaan Jacobs, development officer at theLFA, who will be coordinating the project, says that the area’s most talented players

have not progressed as they should have inprevious years.

“We definitely believe that there is a lot ofraw talent. I have been in coaching for thepast ten years and there have always beenplayers going to the Old Mutual Academy,Ajax, Santos itself and Vasco da Gama but wenever hear from them afterwards.

‘We have all the players here, but we ha-ven’t equipped the coaches to deal with theplayers we have.”

Jacobs added that improving coaching wasjust the first phase of the plan to develop foot-ball in the area.

The LFA has also invited all coaches fromMitchell’s Plain and those from other LFAsaround Cape Town to join the courses at nocost at all.

Anyone interested in finding out more cancontact Ricky Burns on 084 531 8884 or Jacobson 084 8887517.

AROUND 760 of South Africa’sbest schoolboy rugby playerswere present in the SouthernSuburbs this weekend to takepart in the Wynberg Boys HighSchool rugby festival.

The festival, held each year since2005, sees 36 teams in four differentage groups, from schools all aroundSouth Africa, converge on WynbergBoys for two days of rugby.

Since its inception the event hasbecome a massive attraction forplayers and spectators, but accord-ing to Peter van Schalkwyk, direc-tor of sport at Wynberg Boys, thefestival has humble beginnings.

“We started small, there were justsix or eight teams, and it’s justgrown. Now we’ve got 37 teams. It’sjust getting bigger and bigger everyyear,” says Van Schalkwyk.

“We have about 760 players heretoday taking part. I can’t think ofany other rugby festival that will

have as many players as that. Of the760, probably about 380 are from upcountry and the rest are from CapeTown.”

This year the tournament was at-tended by Gauteng sides St Bene-dict’s Catholic School for Boys, StStithian’s College, St John’s Collegeand Helpmekaar Kollege.

While the Western Cape schoolspresent at the tournament wereRondebosch Boys, SACS, FishHoek, Reddam House and DrostdyTechnical High School from

Worcester. The tournament kickedoff on Saturday, with the first 18games being played between 9:50and 17:00.

Some of the highlights of the firstday’s play came from the matchesbetween Rondebosch and Helpme-kaar, SACS and St Stithian’s, andWynberg and St John’s. Rondes-bosch beat their opponents 37-8,while SACS won 31-3 and the hoststriumphed 41-13.

The Gauteng participants in thetournament may not have fared

well on the first day, but accordingto Van Schalkwyk, they are some ofthe top sporting schools in the prov-ince. “They are all private schools. They are the big private schools ofJohannesburg and Gauteng,” saidVan Schalkwyk. “St Stithian’s andSt John’s are well-known becausethey host the big Easter Festivals inJohannesburg. They are famous be-cause they host the biggest school-boy festivals in the country.”

The last 18 matches of the tourna-ment were played yesterday.

LIAM MOSES

AT 10:00 on a cold grey Saturday morn-ing, Marawaan Abrahams (16), Ubaidul-lah Moses (15), and a group of their peersarrive at the soccer field in Grassy Park.

The group has just walked to the field allthe way from Lavender Hill and areas evenfurther away, such as Steenberg.

Abrahams, Moses, and their friends will re-peat this tiring and potentially dangerousjourney along the M5 every Saturday morn-ing for months to come so that they can playsoccer for their club.

“Some of us don’t have transport so wewalk, but it’s not an effort to walk because welove soccer and we love our club. That’s whywe walk. We make an effort to come here forthis club, to play soccer,” says Abrahams.

“It is dangerous if youwalkalone, but if youwalk with big people or with some of your

team players, it’s better. We always walk ina group.”

The club which Abrahams is referring tois Wanderers FC, a Retreat-based side whichhas been helping to keep young boys and menaway from the troubled streets of their CapeFlats neighbourhoods and on the soccer fieldfor over 41 years. All of the club’s players, both juniors and seniors, come from Retreat,Lavender Hill, Capricorn, Steenberg and Caf-da, and most are forced to walk to practiceand matches.

But despite this difficulty, most of the play-ers are happy to walk every Saturday becauseof the passion they feel for the club and be-cause they recognise the important role thatthe team plays in their lives.

“I like the sport. It’s fun and it’s somethingto keep me busy. It keeps me away from bad

things like becoming a gangster or going ondrugs,” says Moses.

“I want to be here. I want to play the game.So I have to make an effort to get here. That’swhy I walk every Saturday.”

According to Abrahams, the team helps tokeep players away from compromising situa-tions and on the straight and narrow.

“If you don’t make an effort or if you don’thave something to do you will follow whatyour friends do and smoke drugs and do stufflike that. But soccer keeps you out of that en-vironment and brings you into a good envi-ronment,” he says. Besides providing theirplayers with a way to avoid the stereotypicaltraps of their neighbourhoods, Wanderers al-so plays a direct role in helping to improvethe lives of players. Each Saturday morning, the club runs a tuck shop at the field and it

often hosts other events to try and raise mon-ey. These funds are then used to pay the regis-tration fees for all of the players, pay for soupto feed the players on Saturday morning andalso pay the school fees of several of the jun-ior players.

According to Derick Southgate, the club’streasurer, the team spends around R1 000each season paying school fees for the play-ers. “Most of the guys go to school at DeltaPrimary so what we do is practice on theirfield, and because we practice on their fieldwe pay school fees for somebody everymonth,” said Southgate.

“Mostly, the guys who play for us, we paytheir school fees first and then for the otherpeople.”

The club also has to provide many of itsplayers with soccer boots because they can-not afford to buy their own.

Anyone interested in assisting the club cancontact Derick Southgate on 073 294 5584.
