The woman claims young mothers are prej- udiced by nursing staff, but is more con- cerned about the unhygienic conditions in the labour ward and bathrooms. The provincial health department has com- mitted to investigating the claims. The 19-year-old from New Woodlands spoke to People’s Post on condition of anonymity as she fears the staff will victimise her should she visit again. After the teenager started bleeding last week, she was taken to the hospital for a check-up – where she was apparently made to wait for three hours without attention. “I arrived at the hospital at 06:00 and a nurse assisted me at 09:00. I then had to wait another four hours before the head nurse advised that I be admitted to the labour ward for monitor- ing,” she recalls. When she arrived at the ward, the nurse on duty questioned why she was there as she had not yet given birth. She was told to wait. “Two women had given birth while I wait- ed to be examined. The new mothers had been sitting in their own blood for hours. One woman – who was about 40 – even asked if I could watch her newborn baby while she washed herself as nurses refused to keep an eye on the infant,” she says. The nurses apparently hit back by asking Het die suster saam met jou gaan lê?’ “The newborn babies were in the bloody beds with their mothers. The one mother re- sorted to changing her own bedding as none of the staff had done so. “The nurses are in the ward and see this happening, but no one assists you. I still have to go through this and it was devastating to see the way pregnant women are treated.” Provincial health spokesperson, Faiza Steyn, counters that the nurse who delivers the patient’s baby is responsible to “clean everything” after delivery. “This is done at all times because it has to be ready for the next patient. Every nurse knows that she/he has to clean up after every delivery before putting a new patient into a bed and this has always been done, according to my knowledge, because everybody is aware of the spreading of infections.” She says the MOU has no nursery as babies are “rooming in with mothers” as part of a mother and baby-friendly initiative. In response to the shortage of nurses in the post-natal ward, Steyn says only one nurse is allocated to this ward. This nurse is also re- quired to assist in the labour ward. But a Tafelsig mother says she was also on the receiving end of ill-treatment from MOU staff. Kayla Fouche (19) says she had been in im- mense pain when she arrived at the hospital in December last year. But she claims she was dismissed as there were not enough beds or nurses to accommo- date the amount of patients present. “The nurses told me they were too busy to assist me and that I had to wait. I was dirty as my water had broken, but no one assisted me. My mother had to clean me and the area I was sitting in. I was then discharged as the doctor told me I was not ready to give birth,” Fouche says. “When I got home the pain got worse. I went back to the MOU at 10:00 and was only seen to shortly before 13:00 as there had not been enough beds to accommodate the number of women giving birth.” Mothers using the maternity unit say they fear contracting infections owing to unhy- gienic conditions at the hospital. “The toilets are dirty. The floors are always wet – you don’t know if it’s water or urine. And if you complain, the nurses often brush off your concerns.” People’s Post visited the unit last week and indeed found the toilets blocked. There was also no toilet paper in the bathrooms and the floor was wet and covered in dirt. Steyn says feedback from facility manage- ment countered this saying: “Cleaning staff regularly clean the toilets and ablution areas. On closer inspection by facility management, there were no blocked toilets from morning until now.” Labour pains at maternity unit

Dear reader,

We are well into the first week of Ra-madan, a holy month during whichMuslims throughout the world go with-out food, drink and physical intimaciesfrom sunrise to sunset.

The month is spent performing extraprayers (Taraweeh), remaining spirit-ually contemplative and repentant, andshowing empathy and charity towardsthose less privileged.

Fasting is one of thefive pillars of Islamand is known for itsspiritual and healthbenefits.

Those who have fast-ed for many years willknow how testing ajourney it can be. Fore-going food and drink isthe easier part.

Remaining steadfastin your spiritual re-solve and resistingprovocation is thehard part.

It is especially try-ing when, in additionto the usual demandsof your professionaland personal life, you are faced with ex-tra challenges.

The beauty of being in a state of fast-ing though is that your body and mindautomatically transcends base urgesand, even if you wanted to lash out inanger at someone who has annoyedyou, you invariably find yourself una-ble to.

Usually by the end of Ramadan, Mus-lims feel sad for a host of reasons.

Some regret not optimising the spir-itual growth opportunity, others feel asense of loss of the unity experienced, and many undertake to uphold thepractices of kindness and sharing.

My challenge as I progress throughthis month, will be to act selflessly andcontain my emotions as I brace myselffor one of the toughest challenges of mylife; that of letting the little boy who hasknown me as his mother for five of hissix years learn that he has anothermother.

Two weeks ago, my foster son’s lifewas turned upside down when he methis birth mother, whom he hadn’t seenin four years.

She took him one side and quietly

told him that she was his real motherand wanted to take him home with her.

He protested by drawing a picture ofme, complete with long hair – as op-posed to her short hair – and then show-ing her who his mother is.

To her telling him that the name heis known by was not his name, hepromptly wrote down the five letters ofhis name. Although I was angry at thebad timing, I was very proud of my sonfor standing his ground and asserting

his identity.I was also proud of

his confidence; andability to spell anddraw.

Sadly, he was trau-matised after this meet-ing, constantly ex-pressing his fear at be-ing taken away fromhis home and parents.

Through mutualagreement, a series ofregular visits aimed atreuniting my son withhis biological familyhas been scheduled, with the first onemeant to have takenplace today.

I was relieved when the social work-er informed me yesterday that the visithad been cancelled.

But I know that future interactionsare inevitable and that I cannot controlthe processes that may stem from them.

What I can do is protect my son fromhurt, remind all parties concerned thatdecisions should be made in his, not theadults’ best interests and continue toprovide a safe, loving home for him.

In a perfect world, I would have pro-tected my son from some of his lifetruths, but as the older and responsibleone, I know that life seldom goes ac-cording to plan.

As I look forward to Ramadan andthe peace and strength it will bring me,I am also aware that it will be a crucialtime for me to choose the correct re-sponses to influence a positive outcomefor the child entrusted to me.

DISABLED residents in Mitchell’s Plainare mobilising themselves to improve ac-cessibility to their homes.

Wheelchair-bound Ashlene Hunter (36) isone of six people whose lives have beenchanged so far, and an organisation aimedat improving the lives of disabled people saytheir list of applicants is growing by the day.

Hunter is still getting used to being ableto move independently after a ramp wasbuilt at her Beacon Valley home last week.

Volunteers – mostly local unemployedyouth – mixed cement and perfectly shapedthe two-metre long structure on Wednesday.

As part of his Mandela Day projects, Na-tionalPlanningministerTrevorManuel alsodonned safety boots and an overall to helpmake Hunter’s life easier.

She was born with a muscle disorder andhas been in a wheelchair all her life.

“My mom is getting old and can no longerassist me in getting in and out of the house,”she says. “The new ramp will make my lifeso much more comfortable and convenient.”

In front of her Tennis Crescent home, peo-ple stood and watched the ramp take shape.

“We didn’t have the money to build theramp on our own so I am grateful to everyonewho has chipped in to assist,” she says grate-fully.

The initiative was started by a group ofmen who know what it’s like to be immobile.

The Greater Bulls Disabled Sport Club pro-motes more than just an active lifestyle forwheelchair-bound people.

Member Anthony George, who was thefirst beneficiary of the project and responsi-ble for getting the initiative off the ground, says homes were previously not built toserve the disabled community.

“In the past, there were no rights for disa-bled people so homes were built withoutwheelchair ramps. With the new legislation, buildings have to make provisions for wheel-chair access,” he says.

George describes Manuel as a “son ofMitchell’s Plain” and asked the minister toassist with the project.

“He is a friend of the disabled community. We cherish his input,” he says.

Manuel has since come on board and do-nated building materials and has vowed toassist where he can.

In partnership with Manuel, the NationalYouth Development Agency and the Depart-ment of Social Development, six ramps havealready been built.

Manuel says the move is not an act of char-ity.

“It’s anact of developmentwhichhadbeenmobilised by George and the communitywho are in need of assistance. Just becausewe are poor does not mean we must live infilth. If the municipality fails to serve itscommunity, the community must take own-ership.

“We should not wait until next year tomake further improvements in the lives ofthose who live here, but we should insteadcontinue in this vein,” Manuel says.

He adds that his constituency office inEastridge is also not accessible to disabledpeople.

The building has a wheelchair ramp at theentrance, but does not have a lift from theground floor to the offices which are on thefirst floor.

He says he hopes to move offices once thelease expires in a bid to make advice accessi-ble to all.

HOMEOWNERS have been warned tohave theirwiringchecked for faultsaftera second house was gutted by an electri-cal fire.

Last Monday, a family of three was dis-placed when their Bayview home went upin flames.

The family has been forced out of theirhome in Seaboard Crescent, after a blazeripped through the property destroyingmost of its contents.

“The cause of the fire was a short circuitin electrical wiring,” says Theo Layne, theFire Rescue Services spokesperson.

The occupant of the house, NoluthandoMakasi, an ANC proportional representa-tive in subcouncil 14, says they are devastat-ed by the fire.

“I am glad that no one got hurt in the fire. We’d rather rebuild our house than have tosuffer the loss of a loved one,” says No-luthando’s husband, Martin Makasi.

He says his 10-year-old daughter and thedomestic worker had been home at the timeof the fire.

“Luckily they were in the garage when thefire started. My daughter has not been toschool all week as we have had to move inwith the in-laws in Nyanga and my daughterschools in Muizenberg,” he says.

The 10-year-old pupil has since gone backto school.

Ward councillor Irma Jackson has encour-aged residents to ensure all their electricalwiring and appliances are in good condition.

“This is the secondhouse in theOn theBayarea to fall victim to a fire of this nature,”Jackson says.

Layne says they responded to the fire at15:45 last Monday.

“The cause of the fire was a short circuitin electrical wiring. There was significantdamage to the bedroom and bathroom at therear of the house where the fire is believed

to have originated. The roof, walls and floorssustained severe water, fire and smoke dam-age. The contents of the house were also de-stroyed in the blaze,” Layne says.

He advises residents to exercise extremecaution in preventing fires, especially in thewinter months.

“People should ensure that all heaters andelectrical appliances are in a good workingcondition. When using a heater or fire to dryclothes ensure it is a safe distance away fromany combustible material,” he says.

Layne cautioned those staying in informalsettlements to be extra careful when keepingwarm this winter.

“Illegal electricity connections are one ofour major concerns. It also makes it difficultfor us to access fires in informal settle-ments,” he says.

The Paraffin Safety Association of SouthAfrica say residents staying in informal set-tlements should heed their call to stay safethis winter.

The association’s senior project managerDehran Swart says it is essential to makesure that all appliances meet safety stand-ards.

Also, make sure it is serviced and in goodworking order before using it.

Swart adds that everything breaks downand malfunctions with time and advises allparaffin users to follow the safety instruc-tions that accompany the appliance.

THE CITY of Cape Town has earmarkedR137 million for the provision of basicservices for backyarders living on coun-cil-owned property in Mitchell’s Plain.

Speaking at a public meeting last week, mayor Patricia de Lille outlined the City’sfive-year Integrated Development Plan, con-firming this.

However, Sulaiman Salie from RondevleiPark says the City of Cape Town contradictsitself as those living in the Siqalo informalsettlement on Vanguard Drive have beenprovided with running water and toilets de-spite squatting on private property.

De Lille says backyarders staying on pri-vate property would not be able to accessthese basic services while those staying oncouncil property would receive basic servic-es including water, electricity and sanita-tion while they wait for their homes to bebuilt.

A person in the crowd then shouted theyhad already been waiting 23 years for ahouse.

Salie says: “The City says they will not pro-vide basic services for those staying on pri-vate property, but it is exactly what theyhave done at Siqalo where people have in-vaded the land and begun to build brickhouses.”

The mayor says while the land invasion ofthat area is wrong, the City has no jurisdic-tion to evict the squatters as they are livingon private property.

“The landowners have since come togeth-er to discuss the way forward. Two of thelandowners approached the City to provideresidents with basic sanitation as theyfeared a possible outbreak of infection anddisease as residents were using the road andbush to urinate and defecate.”

“The City is not allowed to get involvedwith land invasions on private property,” DeLille says.

People’s Post reported on Siqalo (“Old cou-ple’s battle with Siqalo”, 10 July 2012) whensquatters complained about a lack of basicservices in the vicinity.

The settlement has mushroomed out ofcontrol over the last three months and hasalmost doubled in size over the last month.

Bob Ngcwangu, a committee member ofthe settlement, says: “There are hundreds ofshacks here. There are not enough homeselsewhere for these people to stay. They can-not afford to pay rent so they come here andcreate a home for themselves.”

A brick house has even been built on theproperty.

The public meeting stumbled to a close asthe mayor, some of the ward councillors andother City officials laughed as angry resi-dents raised their concerns.

The mayor lost her cool as the meetingdrew to a close, shouting at some of the localswho felt they had not been heard.

“Ek het vir julle ’n kans gegee om te praat, maar nou wil julle oor my praat,” De Lilleshouted.

The audience grew rowdy when they feltthey would not be given an opportunity tobe heard by the mayor. Some stood on chairswaving their hands about in a frenzy in a bidto get the mayor’s attention.

Angry residents stormed out of the Len-tegeur Civic Centre as they felt De Lille hadcome to them with cheap politicking.

THE MITCHELL’S Plain Taxi Forum maybe ready to climb on board for an initia-tive which will see the taxi industry soarto new heights.

Fly Standby have offered the Mitchell’sPlain Taxi Forum a package which will ap-peal to all its members.

This offer breathes new life into the SA Na-tional Taxi Council’s bid to start an airline.

Santaco’s Junaid Peters says: “The planehas crashed and is now being revived.”

The company aims to buy domestic air-lines’ distressed stock and sell it off at acheaper rate, affording those who otherwisewould not have travelled by plane to do so.

Nezaam Abdurahman, the chairperson ofthe forum, says they welcome the idea.

“The project will benefit our community. It is an opportunity for the taxi business tobranch out into a growing market. It willshorten long-distance travelling time,” Ab-durahman says.

The plan devised by Danie Coetzee has al-ready been presented and accepted by Santa-co and is currently under review by nationalgovernment.

The business venture is expected to takeoff in the next six months.

Allan Dickenson, the project manager ofFly Standby, explained how the airlinewould benefit taxi commuters with the helpof a lengthy PowerPoint presentation at a re-cent taxi forum meeting in Portlands.

“The idea behind Fly Standby is to estab-lish the biggest broadbase BEE company onthe joint stock market. This business ven-ture targets the 400 000 registered taxis andits 240 000 taxi-owners which transports 15million passengers daily.”

He says frequent fliers in South Africa arenot reflective of the country’s population asmost of them are white.

About 35 000 of the 15 million daily taxi-commuters travel to their hometowns bytaxi.

Dickenson says their plan is to establisha bank card which will see these passengerstake to the sky.

“The bank cards will allow travellers tofree up the hassle of a paper trail. In theorya taxi will collect passengers and take themstraight to the airport. As soon as they landa taxi will then collect them and drop themat a central point in the CBD,” he says.

Abdurahman says: “Aviation and mari-time are all the areas into which we canbranch if we open ourselves up to the idea.We ask the community to come forward andengage with us on this matter.”

Taxis take to the skyYOU HAVE the power to help the desti-tute bravely facing the harsh winterconditions.

The Mustadafin Foundation is cur-rently cooking for 4 600 people living inthe Kosovo Informal Settlement inPhilippi, who were severely affected bythe recent rain.

Warm meals are being prepared andvehicles are transporting blankets tothe disaster area. The organisation hasalso been asked to be on standby thisweekend as more areas could be affect-ed.

Places most vulnerable to disaster arethe rural communities as they do not

have the same accessibility as those intowns.

The Mustadafin Foundation urgesthosewell-equipped for the chill to sparea thought for those who face winter withonly the clothes on their backs.

The foundation appeals for donationsto assist in “Operation Warmth and Dis-aster”. Donations needed include meat, vegetables, legumes, rice, warm cloth-ing, blankets and cash. Interest moneyis accepted.

A WARRANT OFFICER based at theMitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Courthas been arrested for possession ofdrugs.

The officer attempted to take a parcelof dagga into the court last Wednesdaywhen he was arrested by his own col-leagues.

“They are unable at this stage to deter-mine whether the dagga belonged to theofficer. The matter is being investigated. The officer is back at work pending theconclusion of a disciplinary hearing,”says Mitchell’s Plain police spokesper-son Jerome Voegt.

The police officer is due to appearagain in court on 23 August.

Then in separate incidents, almost 500

people have been arrested since 16 Febru-ary until 22 July for charges relating tomurder, rape, attempted murder, proper-ty-related crime, contact crimes, posses-sion of illegal firearm and domestic vio-lence.

. On Tuesday two men, aged 20 and 24,were charged for the murder of a 30-year-old man from Heinz Park.

The victim was shot in his upper bodyand died at the crime scene.

The suspects are in custody and ap-peared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magis-trate’s Court on Wednesday. The casewas postponed to Thursday.

. Police are also urging residents tokeep an eye on their wheelie bins as sev-en to eight bins are stolen in the area dai-ly.

Voegt, says: “We urge the communityto clearly mark their dustbins with their

street name, number, serial numbersand the owner’s name.

“People should not to leave their dust-bins outside after the dirt has been col-lected by the council as it creates an op-portunity for thieves to steal the dustbin.

“We can also confirm that most inci-dents of theft of dustbins occur on refuseremoval days.”

He says individuals who are found tobe in possession of dustbins and are una-ble to prove ownership will be arrestedfor being in possession of presumed sto-len property.

MITCHELL’S PLAIN has spoken, andmost have given their support to one ofthe area’s busiest roads being named af-ter an anti-apartheid activist.

Should Mayor Patricia de Lille and CapeTown councillors give the go ahead, Van-guard Drive will become Dullah Omar Drive.

His wife, Farieda Omar, will also be con-sulted for her stamp of approval.

Known as one of the most respected free-dom fighters, Omar played a key role intransforming the justice system.

The UCT law graduate also served as aspokesperson forNelsonMandela shortlybe-fore his release from prison.

Last week the City of Cape Town finaliseda series of proposed new street names for DeLille’s consideration.

In an extensive public participationprocess earlier this year, residents wereasked to comment on the proposed renamingof 24 streets, two civic centres and a foot-bridge.

The Naming Committee’s chairperson andMayoral Committee member for Transport,Roads and Stormwater, Brett Herron, saysalmost 19 000 comments were received andin many instances council has agreed toleave certain names unchanged.

“We are determined that the renamingprocess is one that leads to an inclusive CapeTown, and one that it is free of the divisionsthat have regrettably characterised similarprocesses in other metros in South Africa,”he says.

Once De Lille has studied the proposal, thesuggested changes will be submitted to coun-cil for approval.

AN additional R200 000 has been grantedto subcouncil 12 for ward allocationprojects.

The additional cash injection is priori-tised by ward councillors.

Half of the money is set aside for capitalprojects while the other half is for opera-tional costs.

This was discussed at a public meeting atthe Westridge Civic Centre last Tuesday.

The hall was empty as no members of thepublic showed up.

Subcouncil 12, which includes wards 78 to82, will use their additional funds for the up-grading of parks and traffic-calming meas-ures.

Tafelsig ward councillor Sheval Arendsesays R100 000 will be used to upgrade parksin his ward, ensuring that they are disableand senior-friendly

He says: “R100 000 will be spent on job cre-ation. People will be employed as park at-

tendants for the length of the financial yearto assist in cleaning the parks, soft landscap-ing projects and will be expected to do water-ing.”

“If we must use the funding to employ 20to 30 people, they will only be employed fortwo or three months.”

But proportional representative council-lor, Achmat Williams says the people ofMitchell’s Plain “don’t need flowers. Theyneed to feel safe. Council needs to budgetmoney for CCTV cameras.

“This council is not interested in people’ssafety, but rather flowers and parks.”

According to a report by subcouncil, con-sultation with residents resulted in three toppriorities being identified.

These include jobs, upgrading of parks aswell as safety and security.

Councillors approved the proposedprojects at a public meeting last week.

Acting subcouncil manager Keith Snip-pers says: “The ward allocations need to beapproved by subcouncil in time for the Au-gust adjustment budget.”

LITERACY is often forgotten, but is themost powerful weapon in breaking thecycle of poverty.

This was the message of encouragementgiven to youth at a literacy day in Mitchell’sPlain, as part of Mandela Day.

Children read books and learned about thenegative impact of drugs.

Sumaya Logenstein, a reading volunteerat Yellowwood Primary School in Tafelsig,

says she organised the event because too fewpeople see teaching children to read andwrite as an act of kindness on Mandela Day.

“If you can teach one child to read andwrite, you immediately reinvent the wheeland break the cycle of poverty,” she says.

About 100 pupils from schools in Mitchell’sPlain were invited to attend.

The Mitchell’s Plain Welfare also came onboard in support of the day.

“Reading is the key to knowledge. The penis mightier than the sword. One needs to beable to read and write,”she says.

A MITCHELL’S PLAIN family set aboutdoing their 67 minutes of charity by visit-ing the Lentegeur Learners with SpecialEducational Needs School on Mandela

Day. Mustapha Solomons, his family andthe school put together a fun-filled day toeducate pupils about the rich history ofNelson Mandela.

Safety wrapTHE Summer Olympics kick off in London onFriday.

One of the major concerns levelled at theSA 2010 World Cup Soccer – crime – is comingback to haunt London.

Among the most barbed voices in the worldmedia, the Brits simply could not reign intheir negativity around a safe world event inthis former colony.

History has proven their fears unfounded. Now the same questions are being asked of

the London Olympics. How safe will visitorsand athletes be? In particular, Israeli athleteswho mark the 40th anniversary of the Gamesin Munich, Germany, when terrorists killed11 Israeli athletes and coaches.

Chairman of the London 2012 Olympics, Se-bastian Coe, has promised a “safe and secure”event.

Coe fielded media enquiries after the fail-ure of private security company G4S to pro-vide adequate security staff. This has led to3 500 more British troops being called in,making it about 17 000 troops on duty to keepCoe true to his word.

Safety of another matter has also been anissue. Sex workers in Newham, the east Lon-don area which houses the stadium, havebeen bearing the brunt of a police blitz.

The expected influx of two million visitorsfor the Olympics will, it is reportedly predict-ed, inject £13bn into the UK economy overthe next four years. Perhaps safe sex is theone aspect of personal safety visitors to Lon-don may not have to worry about.

A crime associated directly with the SASoccer World Cup – the armed robbery ofthree foreign reporters covering the Portu-guese soccer team at a four-star high-securitylodge near Johannesburg – has at the timebeen solved promptly.

Two Zimbabweans and a Nigerian were ar-rested, charged, tried, convicted and sen-tenced in one of 54 special courts set up.

The world waits to see if the same efficiencycan be expected of London.

THE ugly face of the death penaltyshocked many of us when a young womanwas publicly executed in Afghanistan. Itnever has a pretty face and can never be“humane”.

I was a young boy of 12 when I first en-countered the death penalty.

A young man killed his lover and hermother in Cradock, my birthplace. He at-tempted suicide, but was later executed. That day I decided to devote my life to thefight against this vile form of punish-ment.

Through the years I’ve written numer-ous letters to newspapers nationally tomake people think how despicably it isused in different countries. More thanhalf the countries of the world have al-ready abolished it. Not one desires to re-introduce this Trojan horse.

The bullying tactics of the super powersto continue using it for their own dubiousends is a big stumbling block. China atone stage had 67 capital offences, nowa-days about 56. In the USA and several oth-ers, like Saudi Arabia, even youngsters

and the mentally challenged can be exe-cuted.

The death penalty is very emotionaland sensitive and causes untold anxietyto both parties, the victim, the perpetra-tor and their families.

No scientific or empirical evidence thatthe death penalty has deterrent value hasemerged and never will. Politiciansshould introduce a law making this claima criminal offence.

Many countries have come to SA seek-ing to learn how it was ever possible toextricate ourselves from our disastrouspast.

Others will unfortunately never be suc-cessful in unshackling themselves fromtheirs without paying a monstrous pricein the loss of human life, relationshipsand infrastructure.

The death penalty is a violent act andwill always lead to more violence. Thereis nothing good about it.

Anyone who supports the death penaltyis himself a potential murderer.KOERT U MEYER

New Honda CRV headed for SANew Honda CRV headed for SASINCE its launch in 1995, more than five-million Honda CR-V units have been soldglobally and the forthcoming generationsports a new design as it hopes to build onits predecessors’ success.

South African fans of the Japanese SUVwill have to wait until October or Novemberto get behind the wheel.

The initial range gives a choice betweentwo-litre and 2.2 diesel engines. Power re-mains the same for the i-DTEC diesel engine,at 110kW/350Nm though CO2 emissions forthe manual version have been reduced from171g/km to 153g/km.

The i-VTECpetrol seesmarginal powerandtorque increases to deliver 115kW and192Nm, while emissions have fallen from192g/km to 174g/km.

In front-wheel guise, the 2.0 petrol has aCO2 rating of 170g/km. The rest of rangesports all-wheel drive with hill assist and de-scent control.

Compared to the previous generationCR-V, the new model takes on a more asser-tive stance with a bold front design. Thebumper is joined by a horizontal grille anddeep-set headlights. The model’s signaturevertical tail-lights, now with LEDs, remainbut feature a three-dimensional style.

The headlights feature LED daytime run-ning lights.

Exterior designer Manabu Konaka says:“The CR-V has always been a car for everyoccasion. It can be both casual and formal, but theappearancemust always convey solid-ity and reliability.”

The length and height of the SUV has beenreduced by 5mm and 30mm respectively com-pared with the current model, without reduc-ing interior space.

With the rear seats folded flat, the boot ca-pacity of the CR-V has grown by 148 litres to1648 litres and with the seats folded up, bootcapacity is rated at 589 litres.

The load length has been increased by140mm to 1570mm, while the height of theload lip has been reduced by 25mm makingit easier to load heavy or awkward items.

Keyless entry and a power tailgate havebeen added to enhance its practicality.

The centre console sports a five-inch dis-play which controls audio, telephone andnavigation systems (where fitted).

More space has been created between theseats for two cup holders, a storage compart-

ment, armrest and airvents for the rear seats.Honda has added a host of technology as

standard for the new CR-V such as its ECONmode and Eco-assist systems.

When the ECON button is selected thethrottle responseandair-conditioningareau-tomatically adjusted to minimise fuel con-sumption.

The Eco-assist system uses the vehicle’sdashboard display to advise drivers on howtheir driving style is affecting fuel economy,

by changing the colour of the dial edges fromwhite to green when driving more efficiently.

The new CR-V is also the latest vehicle toemploy the automaker’s Advanced DriverAssist System (ADAS)

ADAS incorporates Honda’s Lane KeepingAssist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Con-trol (ACC) and Collision Mitigation BrakingSystem (CMBS), which warns of an impend-ing collision and even applies the brakes tominimise an impact. – Wheels24

A concerted drive to save the worldA concerted drive to save the worldHAYLEY PHILANDER

SOUTH AFRICA is no stranger to hybridtechnology.

The Prius started it all, back in 2005 andLexus took up the hybrid technology batonwith its “performance hybrids” that todayforms an integral part of its line-up.

In 2012 these sister brands account for mostsales among SA’s 13 hybrid models.

Despite South Africans’ initial reluctanceto accept alternative fuels – and their govern-ment’s continued resistance to incentivisethe purchases of hybrid-powered vehicles –Toyota reports that acceptance of the technol-ogy is better, although still below the globalaverage.

It’s with this idea in mind that Toyota hasexpanded its recently introduced Yarisrange.

Its local hybrid range, which already in-cludes the latest Prius and the Auris deriva-tive, has been bolstered by the addition of theYaris HSD.

Toyota’s Hybrid Drive System is now in itsfourth generation and more than four-mil-lion of its hybrids have been sold worldwide.

This the most efficient Yaris yet – Toyotaclaims 3.8 litres/100km and 88g/km of CO2emissions – is also the flagship of the hatch-back fleet; there will be no traditional “hothatch” variant, corporate communicationsboss Leo Kok said, and product planning vice-presidentGlennCromptonadmitted the auto-maker was optimistic in its approach.

“It’s a new way of looking at performance,”he said.

On the performance front, however, theHSD has a combination of a 55kW/111Nm 1.5-

litre petrol engine, supplemented by a45kW/169Nm nickel-hydride battery andelectric drive based on that in the Prius.

The total system output is 74kW. The twooperate singly or together and the system ismated to a constantly variable transmission.

The downsized hybrid system combinesthe petrol engine with a lighter, more com-pact electric motor, transaxle, inverter andbattery pack – the total system weight is

201kg.But more than being just a more efficient

version of the new Yaris, the HSD looks thepart too with its slim upper grille, light clus-ters and distinctive blue hybrid badge. Aero-dynamic enhancements, among them an un-derbody cover and slipstream deflectors, con-tribute to the HSD’s drag coefficient of Cd0.286.

The cabin has a stand-out blue-grey dash,

hybrid blue instrumentation and a Prius-like computer touchscreen displaying –among other data – real-time details on howthe hybrid system is faring.

Toyota SA plotted an “economy run” aspart of the launch route in which driverswho recorded the best (and worst) fuel con-sumption along the route were rewarded fortheir efforts. The winning team recorded 3.29litres/100km over the 130km route.

The Yaris HSD’s cabin is refined; not eventhe characteristic hum of the transmissionmaking its way into the cabin.

Somehow the blue accents and the bolddashboard add a splash of interest to the oth-erwise dark place.

There are two specification levels – themid-spec XS (R223 800) and the XR (R245 900).Diode daylight running lights, auto aircon,Eco Indicator, anti-lock brakes and electron-ic brake pressure distribution, stability con-trol and front and side air bags are standardon the XS; the XR adds more air bags (seventotal), push-button start, cloth upholstery, front fog lights, a rear spoiler and cruise con-trol.

Kerry Roodt, Toyota SA’s general managerof marketing communications, said: “TheYaris HSD is a true B-segment car designedto attract new, young and urban customers. It’s a hybrid for the youth market, a first stepinto the technology.”

The Yaris HSD makes a very convincing“starter hybrid” statement.

It feels a lot more like a regular car thana mere expensive gimmick, a millstone thePrius has only recently starting to shake off,and it’s so user-friendly it can even providefuel savings for the driver seemingly uncon-cerned by such trivialities.

THE SUPERVISORY board ofGeneral Motors’ Opel brandhas named Thomas Sedran ashead of Opel in the latest re-structuring move for the com-pany.

Sedran’s new title as actingdeputy chairman of the Opelmanagement board follows theannouncement that GM vice-chairman Steve Girsky wouldhead the Europe division on aninterim basis, following Karl-Friedrich Stracke steppingdown after 16 months on the job.

Stracke will, however, stilltake on special assignments andreport to GM chairman and CEODan Akerson.

GM has lost $14-billion (aboutR114-billion) in Europe duringthe past 12 years.

Akerson told shareholdersEurope was the automaker’sbiggest challenge.

Girsky said they would con-tinue to implement the businessplan and work to improve it.

“We will further reduce bu-reaucracy and continue to chal-lenge the corporate culture.”

Sedran, a long-time consult-ant, will continue his manage-ment board role in charge of op-erations, business developmentand corporate strategies, whichhe has held since April.

Beltbag gets green lightMERCEDES-BENZ’S inflatable seatbeltstrap, first seen on the ESF 2009 experi-mental safety vehicle concept, will go intoproduction, the automaker announced.

The inflatable seatbelt strap, called Belt-bag, will be made available in a “luxury-class model”, Mercedes-Benz said in astatement.

The strap is designed to reduce the riskof injury to passengers in the rear in ahead-on collision by reducing the strainplaced on the ribcage.

Once the vehicle’s crash sensors detectan impact, the airbag control unit triggersthe airbag deployment and the multilay-ered strap inflates to nearly three timesthe normal width to better distribute theforces acting on the passenger.

It is used in exactly the same way as aconventional seatbelt.

It is not planned to introduce the Beltbagfor front occupants, as airbags are alreadyincluded in the front, the automaker add-ed. – Wheels24

LIAM MOSES

FALSE BAY RFC is quickly running outof opportunities to ensure its survival inthe apex league of club rugby in CapeTown.

The Constantia-based side are currentlythird from bottom on the Super League A ta-ble – only one point away from second-lastclub Tygerberg, to whom they lost on Satur-day.

Bay still holds the key to their survival, butthey will have to pick up as many points aspossible in theirnext five gamesandhopeVil-lager, Tygerberg and Belhar do not score anyvictories.

They were clear-cut favourites for Satur-day’s game at Phillip Herbstein, as their op-ponents went into the match glued to the bot-tom of the table and having won their first

game in 11 fixtures the previous week againstfellow stragglers Belhar.

It seemed Tygerberg were destined for rele-gation and a future in the Super League B,but the team and their small, but vocal, groupof travelling supporters has clearly refusedto accept what was thought to be inevitable.

The game was a hard-fought, gritty affairfrom the first to the final minute, as bothteams sought ascendancy, points and, ulti-mately, the log points that could ensure theirstatus.

After a period spent defending in their half, the home side opened the scoring through adrop goal from flyhalf Andri Claasen.

Bay continued to apply pressure, but thevisitors took the fortuitous lead after capital-ising on an error. The ball was dropped dur-ing a False Bay attack, kicked through by aTygerberg player and eighthman AlconrayBotha’s long chase up field was rewarded

when he gathered to score. Flyhalf AntonieBrestwick added the extras.

The second-half saw the teams sharing pos-session and territory. FBay goaled three pen-alties, and controversially had one denied af-ter only one of the assistant-referees raisedhis flag.

And Tygerberg responded with two of theirown penalties to take the score to 13-12. Andthey put the game beyond reach when AngeloBrinkhuys drove over the line late in the sec-ond half. Brestwick was on hand again to slotthe conversion.

The 20-12 victory has provided an interest-ing twist to the relegation fight and could re-sult in two of the Southern-Peninsula’s oldestand most established teams dropping out ofthe top-flight.

Villager, South Africa’s second oldest club, lost 25-0 to log leaders Durbanville-Bellvilleat Brookside on Friday. The loss was their

10th in 12 games and sees them languishingin tenth place with just ten points to theirname.

The Dirty Whites travel to Maties, Victori-ans and False Bay in their next three games, before hosting Schotschekloof-Walmers, andthen playing their last two games away fromhome against Tygerberg and UCT.

False Bay, meanwhile, will host UCT, playBelhar away, host Villager, and then travelto Victorians and Maties in their final twomatches.

Villager can hope for losing bonus points– at most – in their final games, while Bay iscompletely capable of beating Belhar and Vil-lager.

While several permutations are still possi-ble at this stage and all the clubs could stillensure its survival, one of the two southernsuburbs teams could find themselves in theSuper League B next season.

TAURIQ HASSEN

THE long-awaited battle between AjaxCape Town and Manchester United endedin a 1-1 draw at Cape Town Stadium.

The match, which had been eagerly antici-pated by both teams fans since its announce-ment, was played in wet and rainy condi-tions. This, however, did not stop fans fromdonning their team’s colours to the match towatch the somewhat disappointing match.

Ajax drew first blood when substitute, Al-cardoVanGraan, chipped ina cross, catchingManchester United’s solid defence off-guard.

The 19 time English league championswaited until the 93rd minute of stoppage timeto spoil the Urban Warrior’s party, when an-other substitute, Bebe, skilfully slotted in theball into the back of the net from close range.

Ajax proved their worth against a Man-chester United team missing big names suchas Wayne Rooney, Nani and Nemanja Vidic.

Khama Billiat was one of the stand out per-formers for Ajax, giving United’s young leftback, Tyler Blackett, a tough day at the office.

The Zimbabwean winger, who was namedman of the match, had the Cape Town outfit’sfirst real chance, striking the ball just wideof the right hand post. Minutes later the wing-er tore United’s midfield, which featured ex-perience campaigners in Micheal Carrickand veteran Paul Scholes, to shreds beforelosing his footing and the opportunity waslost.

Chances were few for United, with Javier“Chicharito” Hernandez getting on the end offew chances missed in front of goal. WingerAntonio Valencia was left frustrated, as Ajaxstubborn defence stood tall. A close range

header by the Mexican striker got the crowdto their feet, but anacrobatic save fromDutchkeeper Sander Westerveld, denied the gamesopener.

In the second half, United came out firing, but still lacked the killer instinct in front ofgoal. The closest chance came from the headof new signing, Shinji Kagawa, when a pinpoint accurate cross from Bebe was headedinches wide from the post.

Ajax hitman, Terror Fanteni, stung thehands of United keeper, Ben Amos, when hiseffort was dug out in the 75th minute.

Ajax coach Maarten Stekelenburg was de-lighted at the performance displayed by theUrban Warriors, saying: “The players wereall pumped up for this game and playing infront of a full stadium motivated our playerseven further.”

Defensively, Stekelenburg highlighted theefforts of Nazeer Allie and the towering fig-ure of Matthew Booth, acknowledging thatthe Cape side had conceded too many goalslast season.

“It’s still in our pre-season for us that’s whywe made a number of substitutions to ensurethat we keep our players fresh, but we willcontinue to work hard on the training fieldso that at the start of our season, we can con-tinue where we left off,” says the proud Steke-lenburg.

Manchester United Manager, Sir Alex Fer-guson, was impressed with Ajax’s perform-ance when he told MUTV: “They caused usa few problems and we decided to makechanges and bring on the younger players, but it was a very competitive game.”

He was particularly impressed with theperformance of his two new signings, Ka-gawa and Nick Powell.

Still no change at the topLIAM MOSES

THE log leaders in the Mr Price HighSchools League resumed their dominanceof the competition this weekend after re-turning from a month long break.

Oval North and Mondale went into thebreak deadlocked on 16 points each andin first and second place respectively, with Oval North ahead only on goal differ-ence.

This weekend both teams again showedwhy they have occupied the first two plac-es for several weeks, both recording com-fortable victories.

Oval North beat Glendale 2-0, whileMondale won 3-0 in their game against Ce-dar High. But Mondale’s extra goal hasdone little to narrow the six-goal deficitby which they trail.

Cloetesville, who lead the table earlierin the competition, kept hold of third posi-tion with a 3-1 victory over Tafelsig, send-ing their opponents tumbling from ninthto 11th.

The Stellenbosch side, who have 16points to their name, moved up into thirdfrom sixth during the last round of match-es in June.

Lenteguer were fortunate to retain thefourth position on the table after losing to0-2 to Aloe High. The result, which is easi-ly the most shocking of the weekend, sawAloe move up from 10th to seventh place.

Portlands High also suffered a surpris-ing defeat in their fixture against BeaconHill. The 3-0 victory saw Beacon Hillclimb from 11th to ninth, while Portlands

retained fifth place.Westridge occupy sixth place, ahead of

Aloe and Glendale in seventh and eighthrespectively. All three teams have earned10 points in the tournament and are sepa-rated by goal difference only.

Heideveld went into this round of fix-tures in last place on the table, havingearned only two points. However, theyhave moved up two places to 14th thanksto a 3-1 victory over Belgravia. The defeatsaw Belgravia drop down to tenth, belowBeacon Hill, from eighth place.

Tafelsig and Rocklands had differingfortunes this weekend, but both teamshave clung to their respective 11th and12th spots. Rocklands’ 3-0 victory overWestridge did not affect their log position.

Spine Road High claimed a 2-0 victoryover fellow stragglers Princeton thisweekend, but the results did little to affectpositions at the bottom of the table.

The last four teams on the league tableare Spine Road (7), Heideveld (5), Prince-ton (3) and Cedar (2).

The league resumes next weekend, butthe games will not be played at the at theRocklands Sports Complex. The venuewas not confirmed at the time of going toprint.
