Instead of saving lives, emergency work- ers now have to worry about their own safe- ty. Emergency workers have been targeted by criminals three times in two weeks in Mitchell’s Plain last month. The ambulance attendants have twice been held up at gunpoint and in one case a heart monitor was stolen from their vehicle. It has been reported the stolen equipment worth R35 000 was sold for a measly R27. The three cases are among 10 reported this year of staff falling victim to crime while on duty. An EMS team was held at gunpoint on AZ Berman Drive and robbed of all their be- longings on Wednesday 26 June. On Tuesday 18 June, a heart monitor was stolen from an ambulance while staff were tending to a patient in Eastridge. Police spokesperson Andre Traut says four suspects were arrested for stealing the monitor. On Thursday 13 June, an EMS team was held at gunpoint while travelling between Eastridge and Tafelsig. Nothing was stolen and no injuries were reported. However, paramedics were left trauma- tised. It is at this stage unclear why the rob- bers took off without taking anything. With a passion for their jobs, paramedics say they sometimes risk their lives to help their patients. But it may no longer be worth the risk, they say. “It is difficult to just walk away when you are able to save a life. But we are trained to assess the volatility of the situation and do what is best for our safety and the patient’s well-being,” says a paramedic, who asked not to be named. “Criminals know there is valuable equip- ment in the ambulance. They will stop at nothing to get something which they can sell for a quick fix. They have even stolen our GPS,” he says. Paramedics’ lives are constantly in dan- ger, the 26-year-old adds. “We will attend to patients who have been shot in a gang war and the rival gangs will prevent us from treating the patient. The victim’s family will then demand that we treat them, but sometimes it is just not possi- ble. “The patient will then have to be taken out of the area before he can be treated,” the par- amedic says. Angelique Jordaan, the provincial health department spokesperson, says paramedics have been permitted to use their discretion to remove themselves from an area should they feel their lives are in danger. “We cannot expect police escorts with each call, but our staff’s personal safety is our primary concern,” she says. Provincial health minister Theuns Botha says the procurement of security services for paramedics will be investigated. “We are very concerned about the safety of our staff. I have asked the department to look into the procurement of armed security guards to accompany our ambulances into high-risk areas to address this matter,” he says. Procedures are in place to equip paramed- ics with the safety skills to safeguard them- selves in dangerous situations, Jordaan says. “We have standard operating procedures in place to inform staff of safety as well as to provide them with safety tips such as anti- hijacking behaviour or to not deliberately advertise expensive items such as jewellery and cellphones,” she explains. Botha says the isolated incidents are as a result of opportunistic criminals. “We are constantly trying to improve on response times and criminals are hindering us from doing this,” he says. A Strandfontein motherhas fallen victim to a pettythief while tending to hersick daughter. But City of Cape Town of-ficials say the mother mayhave been negligent.Rhoda Williams (31) hadbeen visiting the Strand-fontein Clinic last Tuesdaywith her seven-year-olddaughter when her pursewas snatched.“I was in the bathroomand left my purse on thecounter just a few stepsaway. When I was finishedgetting a urine sample frommydaughter,my pursewasgone,” she explains.Lungiswa James, theMayoral Committee mem-ber for Health, says theclinicmanager advisesWil-liamshad left the clinic andreturned an hour later, claiming to havemisplacedher purse. “She said she could well have leftit in the bathrooms or consulting room ear-lier. A search of the clinic and enquiry re-vealed that no one had found or seen thepurse,” James explains.Security concerns have been raised as nosecurity guard is on duty at the clinic.

There are also no security cameras at thefacility.Williams, along with staff at the clinic, went in search of the purse, asking patientsif they had seen anyone take the item. However, everyone claims to have notseen a thing, she says. The purse allegedly containedR500whichhad been raised for a child requiring a coch-lear implant. She says: “It is no easy task going to theclinic with my child, her pram, the child’s

bag and my bag.”Security measures need tobe put in place at the clinic tosafeguard patients and staff,Williams believes.“Anyone is allowed to enterthe facility. No one monitorswho enters the clinic. This is asafety concern given thenumber of people that makeuse of the healthcare facility,”she adds.Mothers who visit the clinicwith their sick children needpeace of mind.“When you are sitting forhours on end at the clinic withyour sick baby, safety con-cerns are the least of your wor-ries. If there is a security guardonduty, parents andguardianswill have some peace of mind, should they need to leave theirbelongings unattended whileusing the toilet,” Williams ex-plains.However, with no similar in-cidents reported at the clinicbefore, James says there has

never been a need for security measures tobe introduced.“There have been no incidents relating tothreats against staff or clients visiting theclinic,” she says. But Williams counters that the City ofCape Town needs to take a proactive stand.“We cannotwait for an incident to happenbeforewe take thenecessary steps to protectclinic staff and patients. Being reactionaryis not the way a government should run acity,” she explains.

After being dormant for nearly fivemonths, the Strandfontein Commu-nity Police Forum (CPF) hasbeen revived. The new executive com-mittee is ready to take ontheir new role and imple-ment various crime preven-tion projects in the area.Elections took place onThursday evening at the As-sembly of God Church inStrandfontein. With 14 registered organi-sations eligible to vote, onlyeight were represented atthe elections. The newly elected execu-tive chairperson is SandySchuter, deputy chairper-son Ruwayda Curnow, sec-retary Faheemah Francis, assistant secretary Mildred Smith, treasur-er ColleenHorswell, project coordinator Pa-tricia Hugo, and public relations officerMario Oostendurp.Schuter says the main aim of the organi-sation at this stage is to rebuild a relation-

ship of trust and service delivery betweenpolice and the community.“There is no working relationship be-

tween residents andpolice of-ficers. In order for us to effec-tively combat crime we needtowork together as the policecannot do it alone,” she says.A lack of resources at theStrandfontein Police Stationneeds to urgently be ad-dressed, Schuter insists.“The 12 constables whichhad been mandated to servein Strandfontein have beenmoved to Mitchell’s Plain. We only have one police vehi-cle on the road,” she explainsHowever, she says it is im-portant for the community tounderstand that station com-mander Captain Lulama Qa-vana has little say over theresources deployed to the sta-

tion.“The provincial police commander needsto ensure that additional officers are sta-tioned at Strandfontein,” Schuter says. With a number of newproject ideaswhirl-ing about, Schuter says the executive will

take their cue from the community.“The community’s concerns will guide usand help us make informed decisions onwhat needs to be done to combat crime. Weas a community need to take back ourstreets and not be held ransom by crime. This we can achieve through the establish-ment of more street committees andstrengthening our neighbourhood watch-es.”With six women on the executive, thenewly elected members have made historyin the Mitchell’s Plain Cluster.Mitchell’s Plain CPF chairperson AbieIsaacs says the changing face of leadershipis welcomed.“These are strong women who are com-mitted to serving their community. Theyare changing the face of community in-volvement in safety structures. They havea passion for what they do and I am certainthey will fulfil their mandate,” he says.Isaacs has vouched his support to the newexecutive and Strandfontein residents.“Strandfontein is not an island on its own.It does not belong to Muizenberg, but to theMitchell’s Plain Cluster. It is important thatwe work together in fighting the drug de-mon and social ills in our areas,” he adds.Crime-prevention operations will focus

A war is looming between traders and theCity of Cape Town as promises to have secu-rity beefed up at the Town Centre have notbeen met.Four years after moving from Symphony

Lane, traders are still waiting on the City todeliver. However, subcouncil chairperson Eddie

Andrews says an additional 10 LawEnforce-ment officers are expected to be deployed tothe bustling shopping precinct in this finan-cial year.KulsumBaker, the chairperson of the Sec-

tor CBD, says she helpedmobilise traders towork with the City in a bid to make the re-cent upgrade a reality. But all the undertak-ingsmade by the City to get traders tomove, have not been met.SymphonyLanewasdeclaredano-trading

zone as part of the Mitchell’s Plain TownCentre Informal Trading Plan which wasproclaimed in the Provincial Gazette on 16October 2009.“As part of the negotiations to get us out

of Symphony Lane to the new trading area,we were promised storage space and addi-tional security guards. Almost half a decadelater and we are still waiting,” Baker fumes.Jasmine Hendricks, the chairperson of

theUnitedHawkers Forum, says traders areready to boycott the City and stop payingrent. “Our concerns and pleas are falling ondeaf ears. This is one of the biggest informaltrading markets, yet we are getting a rawdeal,” she explains.Andrews says the Area Coordinating

Team is investigating what commitments

have been made over the years in terms ofproviding traders with storage space at theTown Centre. But, Hendricks says elected council offi-

cials are letting traders down.“We are calling on the mayor to come to

the Town Centre to inspect the conditions inwhich we have to work. Long before the sunrises, we are here. There are vagrants sleep-

ing in the TownCentre and prostitutes open-ly plying their trade. Foreigners sell drugshere andwhile policemakes arrests, the jus-tice system is failing us as these criminalsalways return,” Hendricks seethes.Politicians must not just visit the area to

collect votes, they say. “We do not see politi-cianshere throughout the course of theyear. But come election time, and we will see a

flurry of them arriving in their shiny cars.Theymust prove theirworthand instead im-plement a plan of action that will addresstraders’ concerns,” she adds.Ward councillor Solomon Philander says

an executive meeting is scheduled for nextweek. “All the traders’ concerns will be ad-dressed at that meeting.”He declined to comment any further.

The crime rate in Cape Town remains a ma-jor concern. Residents are faced with end-less social ills andpolice are constantly bom-barded with complaints from citizens.Provincial Minister for Community Safe-

ty Dan Plato has announced that 25 publicmeetings will be held over the next sixmonths to address crime. These meetings will act as a platform for

community safety structures and residentsto voice their concerns and offer solutionsin a bid to address the problem.People’s Post took to the streets to find out

whether residents think these meetingswould be effective in curbing crime.

TTalkalk the tthe talkalk

RROCHENOCHEN TURNERTURNER believes the meetings will beeffective in reducing crime. “Many people are notaware that if somebody talks about it, it couldmake a positive contribution. The governmentshould approach people and ask for suggestions.”

VVAASHTISHTI VISVISSERSER thinks the community needs towork closely with the government to reduce thisscourge. “I think that by reporting crime and forming neighbourhood watches, we can assist in thecrime reduction.”

MICMICAELAAELA JOOSJOOSTETE says people are losing faith inthe government. “A lot of crimes are being committed in poor communities. I think these meetings are a political ploy because nothing is beingdone to address complaints.”

KIRKIRSHINSHIN ABRABRAHAMSAHAMS suspects the meetings maybe a political move. “The elections are coming upand I think it is just a way for the governmentto gain people’s support.”

BERNHARDBERNHARD FRFRANKANK believes government’s wordsneed to be supported by firm action. “They needto translate their promises into services. Themeetings will only be good if there are results.”

BRIAN KBRIAN KOCKOCK AND ZAND ZAIN GAIN GALLIEALLIE say more shouldbe done to reduce the crime rate. Kock says: “Police arrest criminals, but no further action is taken.” Gallie agrees. “They make empty promises.”

LINDALINDA VISVISSERSER thinks the meetings are a step inthe right direction. “More severe punishmentneeds to be enforced. The government needs tocleanse its own system before focusing on crime.”

A Pakistani tuck shop owner has fallen vic-tim to an attempted robbery three timessince opening two years ago.

Shopkeeper Umair Akram (21) was heldup at gunpoint on Thursday at his shop inHugo Naude Crescent, New Woodlands.

Two men tried to rob the store shortly af-ter it opened at 6:30.

“One of the men took out a gun and de-manded I hand over the cash. I refused, pressed the panic button and he shotstraight at me. I threw myself against thewall and dodged the bullet. He ran offstraight away,” Akram explains.

The young shopkeeper says his life

flashed before him when he saw the gun.“I was scared, but I would not let them

win,” he bravely says. The suspect was wearing a balaclava.“It was dark and it all happened so quick-

ly so I did not evenmanage to get a good lookat the man. The only thing I remember ishim being tall,” Akram says.

No one was injured and nothing was sto-len from the shop.

Thugs had also used a plastic gun in a pre-vious robbery, he recalls.

“It is frightening to have someone pointa gun in your face. In that situation it be-comes very easy to lose your logic and justgive in to the demands of the criminals,” headds.

Tuck shop owners have been advised toreconsider their trading hours.

Lentegeur West/New Woodlands Com-munity Police subforumchairperson, BasilCoetzee, says shops become a hot target inthe early hours of the morning and late atnight.

“Criminals are looking for easy targets. With few people on the streets after dark, tuck shops are vulnerable to criminals,” hesays.

Evenbehind locked gates, tuck shop own-ers remain a target, Coetzee insists.

“Cigarette deliveryvehicleshavebecomea hot target for criminals. Many of these de-livery vans have been robbed in Mitchell’sPlain already. These trucks come into thearea and they put the lives of residents indanger,” he explains.

Tuck shop owners need to make alterna-tive arrangements to purchase their ciga-rettes.

“Saving a few cents is not worth some-one’s life. While it may be cheaper to buydirectly from the supplier, people’s livesare being put at risk,” Coetzee says.

Police spokesperson Captain RewayneMuller says they have received no officialreports about the incident.

Muller urges residents to report crime tothe police.

Anyone with information about any ille-gal activities can call the sector vehicle on082 522 0274.

They may seem like unlikely partners, butwhen Shahied Johnson and Chantelle LeRoux dance, gold is always a trot away.

The dancing duo is preparing to continuetheir winning streak on Saturday after win-ning gold in the Latin category at the Fendan-sa Dance Sport Festival last month.

Their young partnership has enabled thecreation of truly extraordinary choreogra-phy.

Johnson (42) was born with spina bifida,a disorder which leaves part of the spinalcord open.

He is paralysed from the hip down, but thishas never stopped him from doing what heloves.

With a passion for dance, the wheelchair-bound man from Montrose Park sways to therhythm of the music with his able-bodiedpartner.

He has been dancing competitively for 11years and works as a switchboard operatorat a five-star hotel along the coast in CampsBay.

“I put in a lot of hard work to fine tune myperformance. I like to go before the judgesknowing I have prepared well. It adds to myconfidence which polishes off my perform-ance,” he explains.

With the next competition just days away,Johnson says he has not practised as oftenas he had hoped.

“My dancing partner and I live on oppositeends of the city. She still studies and I workshifts. We have managed to squeeze in a fewrehearsals, but it is not enough,” he admits.

Johnson has competed internationally andplaced 11th in Holland at the World Champi-onships in 2005.

“To place 11 out of 29 countries was a greatachievement for my dance partner and me.I won that competition with the help of myfirst ever dance partner. We had been danc-ing together with for seven years. She under-stood me. I would ride over her feet and she

would keep her cool. Her patience and dedi-cation to dancing with a disabled personmade her the perfect partner,” he gleams.

Watching people dance competitively in-spired Johnson to take to the floor.

“I always enjoyed the langarm, but neverknew there was so much more to dancingthan that. I have uncovered a whole newworld of dance styles by competing,” he says.

Your attitude determines your success,Johnson insists.

“Never feel sorry for yourself because youare in a wheelchair. Never limit your dreamsand aspirations because you have a disabili-ty. Disabled people are able and can achieveanything. You just have to put your mind toit,” he believes.

More feet are making their way to-ward public transport interchangesas fuel prices last week hit an all-timehigh.

And if the rand’s value continues toplummet, more petrol price hikescould be in the pipeline.

Lift clubs, cycling and even old-fashioned walking are some of the al-ternatives motorists are now forcedto consider to keep their budgets bal-anced.

Taxi driver Arnold Dreyer says theclusters of people waiting at pick-uppoints have grown in the last week.An increase in passengers is fantas-tic, he says, as drivers will now haveto make extra trips to make their dai-ly targets.

“Most of the stops on my route have dou-bled in the number of passengers. It reallyis a blessing because the petrol price in-crease is really eating at our pockets,” hesays.

“No driver will ever say no thanks to ex-tra bums on the seats.”

To which one grumpy, particularlysquashed commuter responded: “Ja, butone seat is made for only one bum!”

Taxi fares only increase once a year, andtaxi bosses say there has been no word ona price hike – yet.

Douglas Mdoda says he has started work-ing an hour earlier to “squeeze in” an extratrip.

“I have three kids and a wife whom I needto support. If I don’t make my target, myboss doesn’t pay me in full and I don’t makeany extras. We work on a system similar toa commission structure. And if you don’tbring in the money, you don’t get fullypaid.”

Switching from his own car to publictransport was an easy decision to make,Ralph Ockers says.

He previously travelled about 40kms aday between home and work, and says therecent petrol price increase would havewreaked havoc on his budget. “I could man-age if the price per litre rose by 10c, but tojump by almost R1 is ridiculous. Drivingyourself to work is now a luxury,” he says.

Train services apparently haven’t seen adrastic increase in commuters heading tostations.

However, some periods have seen morebodies make their way through the turn-stiles, says one ticket barrier.

“Usually, things slow down between 07:30and 09:00 as most people would already beclose to or at work. But this period has nowalso become more busy,” he explains.

More “professional-looking” people arealso using the train, he adds.

“It appears that more suit and high-heelwearing commuters are standing on theplatforms. It is, after all, the cheapest trans-port service.”

Lizelle Marais works as a personal assist-ant in the city centre.

For five years she has been part of a liftclub, but can no longer afford this “luxury”.

“It was either give up the wheels, or giveup the necessities,” she says.

“And while travelling by train is most ofthe time quite unreliable and in no wayglamorous, it is easy on the pay cheque.”

Brett Herron, the Mayoral Committeemember for Transport, urges motorists toconsider using public transport whereverpossible, or to walk or cycle to take the stingout of the fuel price hike.

The capacity of the current road andtransport infrastructure is under increas-ing pressure, resulting in longer peak peri-ods, worsening congestion, and wasting val-uable time in traffic, he explains.

“Public transport really is the way of thefuture – it is much cheaper, less stressful, and more environmentally-friendly thantravelling by car. It is a crucial factor to in-crease the liveability of the city.”

A shootout which saw bullets raindown during a police highspeed chaseis being questioned by witnesses. The holiday cheer was interrupted

as officers opened fire while in pursuitof a group of robbers two weeks ago.A crowd of children played in the

street as police vehicles sped by, giv-ing chase to suspects wanted for therobbery at theMcDonalds at the Prom-enade Shopping Centre. The five suspectswere arrested soon

after mayhem unfolded at the eatery, but not before a high-speed chase withpolice through Woodlands, Lentegeur andThe Leagues. Witnesses say police openedfire first, prompting a shootoutwith the sus-pects.Ebteshaamah Ismail, a Rondevlei resi-

dent, was at the scene when the drama un-folded. She mans a stall outside a butcheryon Mitchell’s Avenue. Children scatteredand ran for cover as soon as the gunshotsrang out, she recalls. “Children were play-ing in the road, some on their bicycles. Thelittle ones dropped their things and lay flaton the floor as soon as the police startedshooting at the suspects,” Ismail says.Mtchell’s Plain police officials confirm

two armed robbers entered the store outsidethe mall that afternoon, demanding cashfrom the staff.Police spokesperson Constable Jerome

Voegt says the suspects fled on foot with a

cash register in hand. “Our officers thenspotted the suspects making off in a greenVolkswagen minibus. The getaway car wasparked in a street next to the mall,” he says.A shootout ensued as the suspects desper-

ately tried to avoid capture. “One of the sus-pects fired several shots at our officerswhile driving in Morgenster Road, Len-tegeur. Several police vehicles gave chaseand another shootout broke out in WhiteHall Lane in The Leagues,” Voegt adds. But another witness says police had no

reason to open fire.“No one’s life was in danger, so why was

there a need for officers to start shooting atthe getaway vehicle?” he asks.Mitchell’s Plain police are unable to com-

ment further on the matter. However, any-one with information may phone ConstableLombaard on (021) 370 1738.

Foundation Phase literacy campaign runby the organisation.Aimed at improving the literacy levels

of primary school pupils, the long-termproject provides childrenwith funand in-teractive tools to improve their readingskills.Facilitator Leila Walters says this ap-

day program at Greenlands PrimarySchool in Bishop Lavis. We saw a majorspike in pupils’ academic performance. We try to make learning fun by incorpo-ratinggamesandplaying, something thatnot many curriculums incorporate.

“We present the work in such a waythat the children don’t even realise theyare working. As a result, much of thelearning takes place without pupils los-ing interest,” Walters says.Wavecrest Primary School is one of

JOIN US FOR OUR “JOB CREATION” EXHIBITION AT THE LIBERTY PROMENADE MALL, MITCHELL’S PLAIN, FROM 9 – 11 JULY 2013

We provide training and placement at our company with a job on a permanent basis, at no cost to the candidate.

. It is a massive problem when pupils arestill seen on the road to school at 08:30 and09:00. Why is this? I say locking them outcould easily result in them being locked up.While they are denied access to school forarriving late? Their minds wander and whoknows what they can get up to. I would liketo interview a few pupils, preferably a pupilof each school, as well as the principals toget their views on how to remedy the late-coming situation going forward. I would liketo turn this into a documentary. Please con-tact me on [email protected].

. We no longer life in the area, but MrChotiawasmyson’s teacherwhenheattend-ed Glendale. My son speaks of him with re-spect and I am grateful for the values hetaught my son and others. Continue the good

work, Mr Chotia and staff. Mrs Burns. I don’t buy the story of a camera wait-

ing on parts for repair. Those cameras arenot made to be repaired, but to be replaced. You must remember this is not Table Viewor the Waterfront – this is the place whereonly your money matters. Sceptic

. Promenade Mall used to be extremelyhot inside before there was air-condition-ing, but I just realised it is never switchedon. I asked the woman at the informationdesk why this is and she said the customersrequested it because it is winter. Absolutenonsense. Are they that cheap?

. They also chased the criminals past myhouse in Mitchell Avenue in Woodlands, shooting at them out of their windows, putting other drivers and the residents indanger on Saturday afternoon.

. I was also a victim of this guy. He toldme the same story of being hospitalised.John, Portlands

. It is heartbreaking to read these stories,as these people are our “lost generation”. I be-lieve only early intervention and compas-sion, together with a strong support system, can overcome this scourge. Unfortunately somany addicts are already too far gone andlose that vital family support. I’m not even

sure if more and cheaper rehabs will helpwhile tik is freely available on every corner.

. Bring back chain gangs to clean all are-as – roads, pavements, beaches, bridges andeverything that needs repair. Hard workwill restore dignity, reduce crime in jail andintroduce studies at night. Take away TV.

ramadaan mubarak2013/143409 july – 08 august

THE NIYAAT OF FASTING IS:

Nawaitu Sauma-Ghadin An-Adaai Fardi-Ramadana, Ha-Thee-His Sanati, Li-la-Hi Ta'Aala

“I intend to fast for the coming day in order to perform my duty towards Allah in the month of Ramadaan in the present year”

NIYAAT FOR BREAKING FAST IS:

Alla-Humma Laka-Sumtu Wa'ala Rizqi ka aftar-Tu “Oh Allah, for Thy Glory have I fasted, and now I break the Fast with food that cometh from Thee”

ALLAH SAYS IN THE HOLY QUR’AAN

Surah 11 - Ayat 185

Ramadaan is the (month) in which was sent down The Qur’aan, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment

(between right and wrong) So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month, should spend it in fasting, but if any one is

ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you, He does not want to put you

to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to Glorify Him in that He has guided you, and perchance ye shall be grateful.

SIX SUNNATS DURING RAMADAAN

would like to wish all our Muslim readers a blessed Ramadaan Mubarak

Athlone’s Progress RFC have targeteda second place finish in Division Fourafter starting the second round of

matches with three consecutive victories. The City Park based club lost three and

drew one of their first eight games in theleague, but the second round has seen themnotch up wins against Cities and YoungBrothers in June and thrash Delft RFC 44-13on Saturday.

Assistant coach Carlo Booysen says histeam’s good form is the result of a rediscov-ered appreciation for the rule book.

“In the first round we dropped a coupleof points against teams we shouldn’t havelost to because of our discipline. But wehave started the second round well and to-day was another positive performance,” hesays.

“Building from here, we can end in sec-ond place. I don’t think we can catch thefirst-placed team because they are wayahead of us on points.”

Progress were dominant from the firstwhistle against Delft and their performancewas reflected on the scoreboard as theyraced to an 18-0 half time lead.

Flyhalf Jethro Knoll slotted two penaltiesin the 10th and 15th minutes and convertedthe first of Rashied Davids’ two tries in the25th and 40th minutes.

Progress continued where they left off inthe second half, with a tries from GamatKelly and Stanton Arendse, in the 10th and14th minutes respectively. Both were con-verted by Knoll.

Delft finally added a touch of respectabili-ty to the scoreline with two penalties fromDelano September at the 55th and 60thminute marks and a try from Randall Klim, which September also converted.

However, Progress were not done with

the scoring and hammered the final nail in-to the coffin when Shane Fortune finishedoff a long-range counter-attack. Knollcapped the performance with another con-version.

Booysen was happy to come out of thegame with the bonus point victory, but saidhis side had expected the game to be “easy”.

“It was a good performance because wecame from a three-week bye, so this is oneof our first games back. Many of guys didn’ttrain during this period,” he says.

“The guys came out tops. The first halfperformance wasn’t great, but we picked itup and some good changes were made in thesecond half. We got the bonus point, whichis a plus.”

Progress have a bye this weekend, butwill hope to take a major step towards theirgoal of finishing second on the table on Sat-urday 20 July, when they face current sec-ond-placed side Bishop Lavis.

In other results from the weekendsmatches Hamiltons beat Bellville 78-12 inSuper league A, while Primrose beat Ham-lets 41-7 in Super League B.

In Premier League A Surrey Estate Rang-ers lost 14-36 to St George’s away from homeand MIT Rangers lost 12-20 away to Strandin Premier League B.

Rocklands lost 18-23 to Violets at home inDivision One, while Young Stars beat Tech-Gardens 16-13 in a City Bowl derby and Cal-edonian Roses beat Masiphumelele 28-21 inDivision Two.

SPORTStage set for soccer showpieceLIAM MOSES

After hours of gruelling training ses-sions and six pressurised qualifyingmatches, 16 football teamswill reap the

rewards when they play in the finals of the10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge. The Challenge will pit Cape Town’s best

under-17 footballers against each other in abattle for the prize money, bragging rightsand possibly the chance at a professional ca-reer.People’s Post is the tournament’s printme-

dia sponsor. Many of South Africa’s most celebrated

professional footballers first made a namefor themselves or were scouted at the EngenKnockout.Edries Burton, chief operations manager

at host club Santos FC, urged the currentcrop of players to make the most of their op-portunity and emulate the Engen Knock-out’s most famous products.“As a former player, my challenge to the

young players is that there is an opportunityhere. If you look at Thulani Serero – this iswhere it started for him and look where it’sgoing,” he says.“The stars are the limit for these young

players. Who knows where they can end up?They are young and have the world at theirfeet. They can make a decision to finish fur-ther than Thulani Serero; it’s entirely up tothem.”Over 100 teams started the qualifying

process at the beginning of June and onThursday the 13 teams whomade it through

were divided into groups along with auto-matic qualifiers Ajax Cape Town, ChippaUnited and Santos FC.Group A contains Pinelands club Old Mu-

tual Academy, Mitchell’s Plain’s KenparkUnited, Green Point Salesians and IslandRovers In Group B defending championsAjax Cape Town, National First Division(NFD) side Vasco da Gama, Cape United andKuils River United will vie for the top twospots of the group.Engen Santos, Hanover Park FC, Kraai-

fonteinCity andGrassyPark sideCrusadershave been drawn in Group C, while GroupD will pit the NFD’s Chippa United, BishopLavis FC, Atlantic Nacional and Clare-mont’s ASD Academy against each other. In past years the tournament was hosted

at the Stephen Reagan Sports Complex inWestridge, Mitchell’s Plain, but the 2013tournament will be played at William Her-bert Sports Grounds, home of the Cape Dis-trict Local Football Association (CDLFA), inWynberg.Winston Engledoe, president of the CDL-

FA, says the new venue gives participantsa whole new list of stars to look up to.“Since unity we have a produced a few in-

ternational players, namely Mark Wiliams,Gerald Stober, Roger Links and Benni Mc-Carthy,” he says.“CDLFA and theWilliamHerbertMunici-

pal Field Management Committee wish youall the best for another great and successfultournament.”Engenmarketing manager Brad Bergh al-

so announced that, as part of the 10th anni-

versary celebrations, one of the players willbe selected to join the Engen High Perform-ance Programme at the High PerformanceCentre in Pretoria. The tournament will also have a charity

initiative this year, with R500 being donatedto the Red Cross War Memorial hospital forevery goal scored in the final of the tourna-ment.The Engen Knockout Challenge will take

place from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 August.V See more photos on www.peoplespost.co.za.
