President’s Podium
This month I wanted to talk to everyone about all of the exciting events that are upcoming and ask that our biggest asset, our membership, join together to help make these events the very best that they can be. I also wanted to briefly discuss a website update that should be beneficial to all of our members.
The first item this month is the website change. While we had a job board on our website before, many of our members weren’t aware of it and it has now been brought to the home page for easy access. With so many of our members looking for a new position we hope that the new placement of the job postings will help our members utilize this feature more. The title of the page is “Job Postings” and it is now located at the top of our website’s home page in the black bar. Please be sure to contact our webpage committee members to post any open positions that would be of interest to our members. While I personally have been looking for a new position, I have found as many of you know, that in the fields of work that make up our membership, many of these jobs aren’t posted on job boards. Word of mouth and posting these positions on the KCIFMA website can be of great help to our members.
As for events, we have many exciting things to look forward to over the next few months. This month we have our regular program meeting. In addition to that we have a corporate sponsorship breakfast and a corporate sponsorship lunch as well as a new member breakfast. These are all very important events. As far as sponsorship goes, it is a vital part of our organization and we value all of our sponsors. The drive is to help the chapter drive participation from all of our currents sponsors as well as get other companies represented throughout our chapter involved through sponsorship of KCIFMA. We wouldn’t be able to do the things we do and provide what we provide to our membership without all of our current, and hopefully future, sponsors. We also have the new member breakfast which allows new members, current senior members, and sponsors to interact in a setting directed towards networking and education about our chapter. Please be sure to RSVP and attend one or all of these great events in February.
In May we have the Real Estate Expo at the Overland Park Convention Center. We have our very own Teena Shouse leading the charge with BEP to set up all of the educational opportunities that will be offered at the expo. There are many tasks that need to be accomplished to make this event a success. If you would like to get involved please contact Teena Shouse or myself. We can definitely put any volunteers to good use.
In June we have the golf tournament. This is our annual scholarship fundraiser. This year Sam Davidson is chairing the Golf Committee. If there is anything you can do to help out Sam or if you would like to participate in the planning please be sure to contact him. I’m sure he would appreciate any help that comes his way.
As you can see we are off to a busy start of the year. There are many different events that are actively being worked on right now. Sponsorship, joining a committee, or volunteering to help with a particular event is a great way to become involved in the chapter and also a great way for new members to get their feet wet and begin learning about the chapter and how it operates. If you are interested in participating in any way please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of our board members or committee chairs. We would love to talk to you about any possible opportunities. Stay warm for the remainder of the month. I look forward to seeing you at one of these great events.
Thank you,
Chris Gardner │ Kansas City Chapter of IFMA President │ [email protected]

CFM Recertification
Why is recertification important?
You may ask why it is important that a designee continue to study or participate in industry
sponsored events to maintain the right to use the CFM designation. By using the
designation you are promoting your high level of experience and knowledge. If no program
were in place to keep up with the dynamic changes in facility management, then the power
and prestige of the designation would be diminished. The CFM is a constant reflection of
your expertise and professionalism; thus, worth maintaining.
About IFMA's recertification
Certification is valid for three years. A list of point-earning activities in each of these areas is
sent to each new CFM. To maintain the CFM credential, a list of the activities performed
along with the appropriate supporting documentation including a processing fee must be
submitted to IFMA credentialing department. CFMs are required to earn 120 maintenance
points in at least two of the following four categories:
I. Practice
II. Continuing education
III. Professional involvement
IV. Development of the profession
Processing fees
US$210.00 (member) / US$265.00 (nonmember)
What if my CFM designation is expired?
After your official CFM expiration date, there is a three-month grace period in which you may
renew without penalty. If a package is received anywhere from three months and one day to
six months after the expiration date, it will also need to include a late fee of US$100.00. The
rules of the International Credentials Committee mandate that anyone who goes more than
six months past their expiration date without renewing their CFM will lose it and must retake
the CFM Exam in order to regain it.
Reminder notices are sent out as a courtesy; it is each CFM’s professional obligation to
renew their CFM in a timely manner. It is also their responsibility to ensure that their address
record is kept current.
A CFM Exam Preparation Workshop is scheduled for this April, so look for details soon.
