President’s Podium

col·lab·o·rate verb \kə-ˈla-bə-ˌrāt\ 1. To work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor 2. To cooperate with an agency or instrumentality with which one is not immediately connected

In the world we live in, things are demanding, fast paced and always changing. More and more, to stay abreast of our areas of responsibility, we have to rely on collaborative effort. Kansas City’s Chapter of IFMA is a successful model of collaboration. We are a group of people involved in the managing of complex facilities. We have varying backgrounds, levels of experience and expertise. Some of us are on the front lines of managing facilities and some of us support those that manage. Twenty-five years ago, a group of forward thinkers decided to work in collaboration to form an association that was devoted to educating and equipping Facility Managers to effectively navigate the ever changing waters of the built environment. KCIFMA has become an integral piece in the growth and development of countless Facility Managers. A few years ago, some forward thinkers in the Kansas City area saw a need for a greater collaboration…a collaboration of associations. There was a keen awareness that sometimes we can go a lot farther working together rather than in competition. By pooling resources, strengths and influence we could bring greater educational opportunities and expertise to our individual memberships. The result was the formation BEP (Built Environment Partners). BEP is a collaborative organization of associations (KCIFMA, BOMA, CSI, AWMA, USGCB, ASHRAE & EPA). KCIFMA was a charter member and is one of the driving forces in the development and effectiveness of the organization. On May 9th, an unprecedented event will take place in Kansas City. The KC Commercial Real Estate Expo has been a premier event in Kansas City for years. This year it is truly a collaborative effort of BEP organizations. The National Chairs of IFMA, BOMA, IREM and ASHRAE will all be in Kansas City for this event and will participate in a keynote luncheon. These National Chairs have told us, to their knowledge, there has not been an event or organization like this. They express amazement and support for the level of collaboration. In addition to the National Chair luncheon and Business Expo, an impressive slate of educational sessions is scheduled for the afternoon. Each session has been sponsored and underwritten by one of the BEP members. KCIFMA’s Education Committee is sponsoring national author, consultant and speaker, Alan Whitson’s Green Lease session. To review the sessions and register for the Expo, visit www.bomakc.org .

Monthly Program Meeting

Tuesday, April 17, 2012 • 11:30 - 1:00 pm

Business Etiquette: Business Dining Manners

Embassy Suites on the Plaza

220 West 43rd St

Kansas City, MO 64111

In today's busy and competitive business world, more and more deals are being made or broken while dining. Some job promotions are being given or lost based on an individual's table manners.

Are you comfortable with your dining skills? Are you comfortable dining with your boss or your CEO?

Been asked to a job interview over a lunch? Want to take potential clients out for lunch and not be worried you’re being impolite. Do you know which side the bread plate is placed? Did you know there are two different styles of eating food? Do you leave your utensils in the "finished position" on your plate? Find out the answers to these questions and the finer details of business dining with Janis Kliethermes of Etiquette Kansas City.

This will be a sit down lunch with shortened announcements and special presentation. Please arrive no later than 11:30.

Program Pricing: Because of the special lunch and included parking, this Program Meeting price will be slightly higher than our typical monthly meeting. Pay Pack users, however, will not be required to pay for the increase in price.

Parking: Embassy Suites is going to waive the fee for parking in their lot, but it is first come first serve. North of the building is parking for all of Westport and is a short distance from the back entrance. Note: We will still need to collect a ticket at the gate and we will be given a chaser ticket by Towne Park in the function room to exit the hotel after our meeting.

KCIFMA May Monthly Program Meeting - Real Estate EXPO

We are very excited to announce our first education event with the BEP of

Kansas City.

Instead of our usual Program Meeting, IFMA is encouraging our members to

attend the new Educational Series being held at the KC Real Estate Expo.

It all starts with a Presidential Round Table at 12:45 where the NATIONAL Presidents/Chairpersons of IFMA, BOMA and ASHRAE will be talking about the state of the industry and future of Commercial Real Estate. We have been told this is the first time in history these three separate organizations have

had their presidents on the same platform.

Follow the presidential round table, attendees will have the option of participating in one of many unique and information educational sessions as

well as visiting the trade show booth area.

IFMA is sponsoring a two hour seminar, from 3 to 5pm on Green Leasing conducted by industry expert Alan Whitson. Alan is noted speaker and author and he is considered by many to be one of the leading experts on the area of green leasing. His seminar will demystify the green leasing process and provide real estate professionals a valuable perspective in how to make

the green leasing process a win for everyone.

For more information, please check out our website www.kcifma.com.

We look forward to seeing everyone there.

July marks the beginning of our fiscal year, which is when we swear

in our 2012-2013 Officers. What that means for you is that it’s time

to nominate next years Executive Board. The nomination form will be

emailed soon.

Why not join a Committee and be a part of the KCIFMA Board.

Information about each Committee will come soon.

If you need any information or have any questions, please contact

the Chapter Admin at [email protected]
