Dear LA Chapter Members,

As a new year dawns ahead, we have not only survived another year but also hopefully enjoyed this past holiday season. By doing so, our annual rite usually involves working on accomplishing this year what didn’t get accomplished last year which hopefully leads to steady improvement. As you plan your approach to the year ahead, please consider your continued activities with the IFMALA Chapter and make this your best year yet. Step outside of your comfort zone, volunteer for a leadership role or make it a goal to attend just one more meeting than you did last year or better yet, attend all events and see what happens—you’ll be glad you did.

I have previously remarked on the close connection between volunteering and the success of our chapter. Arguably, one of the vital determinants of that success is how well the volunteers and leadership work to grow and improve our chapter. Each member of our committees and board has an important role within the chapter to help our chapter accomplish our mission-empowering facility professionals worldwide. In an organization like ours, we can never have enough good volunteers. Therefore, if you have an interest in serving, please visit us at www.ifmala.org and contact a committee chair or board member today.

I would also like to take this time to thank each board member, committee chair, and committee member for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions throughout the year. Our chapter has continuously grown over the past several years and we want to maintain this momentum. In order to do so, we must continue guiding and developing facility management professionals by providing exceptional services, products, resources and opportunities.

Periodically we will send out surveys requesting your feedback, suggestions and input regarding our chapter events. This feedback is important in guiding us to understanding and meeting your needs as a member. However, you don’t need to wait for the survey to give us your feedback; we invite and encourage you to send comments or suggestions to any board member or committee member at any time.

Our Programs Committee has coordinated some great programs for 2013 and I hope to see you at as many events as possible. One major event occurring locally this year is Facility Fusion, which will be in April at L.A. LIVE. The LA Chapter will be the hosting chapter and needs your help and support in making this an outstanding event. Similar to World Workplace only on a smaller scale, Facility Fusion offers many opportunities for all those who attend—we hope to see you there!

I look forward to the year ahead as well as the opportunity to work with each of you in achieving our short and long-term goals. Remember, this is your chapter and it is up to you to be active and make it one that other chapters aspire to be like and facility professionals look to for guidance.

PRESIDENT Garth Sellers

Garth Sellers, has been a member of IFMA since 1989 and received his CFM in 2000. Garth has been the National Manager of Facilities for American Honda for over 25 years. He oversees the facilities operations, and the Health, Safety & Environmental operations at all American Honda Facilities. He currently resides in El Segundo, California with his wife for the past 26 years. He has two daughters 36 and 35 one living in El Segundo and the other in Texas. Garth graduated from UCLA, and continued his facilities education with a two-year program at UCI.

Garth believes in teamwork and exceeding customer’s satisfaction. Everyone has a customer, and the membership of IFMA-LA is one of the many customers of the board. It is important that we understand what our customer desires and expects from the board, and it’s our responsibility to meet and exceed these expectations. This philosophy is how he has operated his facilities organization over the years.

IfMa founDaTIon

The IFMA Foundation was established in 1990 as a non-profit, 501c)3-corporation, and a separate entity from IFMA. The IFMA Foundation works for the public good to promote priority research and educational opportunities for the advancement of facility management. The IFMA Foundation is supported by the generosity of the FM community including IFMA members, chapters, councils, corporate sponsors and private contributors who share the belief that education and research improve the FM profession. As a separate entity from IFMA, the IFMA Foundation receives no funding from annual membership dues to carry out its mission.

Vision Expand knowledge of the built environment in a changing world through scholarships, education and research.

Mission Promote and support scholarships, educational and research opportunities for the advancement of facility management worldwide.

PurposeTo provide greater resources and educational opportunities to facility management professionals and those that support the FM industry.
