SituationArdtur House has a remarkable position on the shores of Loch
Linnhe. It has wonderful views which take in Lismore Island, the
Island of Shuna, Castle Stalker and the Morvern Peninsula beyond.
The village of Port Appin is only minutes away. It lies on the coast
just north of Loch Creran as it meets the sea. There is a local shop
and post office, two very well respected seafood restaurants and
it is the terminal for the Lismore ferry. The local primary school,
Strath of Appin, is about two miles away.
There is spectacular hill walking, climbing and mountaineering in
the area with skiing at Aonach Mor and Glencoe. The west coast
provides some good sailing waters. Dunstaffnage Marina near
Oban offers excellent berthing facilities.
Oban (19 miles) has a good range of shops and professional
services as well as secondary schooling and a railway station with
regular services to Glasgow and London. Oban is also the ferry
terminal to the Western Isles. There is a small airfield at North
Connel and Glasgow International Airport has regular domestic
and international flights.
DirectionsFrom Oban head north, over the Connel Bridge (A828) signed for
Fort William. At the village of Appin turn left onto the minor public
road signposted to Port Appin and Lismore Ferry. Follow this road
for about 2 miles and pass the entrance on the right to Ardtur
Farm. The main entrance to Ardtur House is the next turning on the
right, through stone gate pillars.
DescriptionDating from around 1845, Ardtur House is a fine country house in
an enviable lochside position. It is built in stone under a slate roof
and offers flexible accommodation over three levels.
Externally it is typically Scottish with its pediments and finials over
the first floor windows whilst internally it has some wonderfully
refined cornices, fireplaces and polished floors.
The house has been refurbished in a sympathetic style with
many of the original features such as sash windows with working
shutters, panelled doors and open fireplaces having been
preserved. However there have also been major structural
alterations including the demolition of a rear wing and
replacement with a high quality addition which includes
the new kitchen, boot room, laundry and master bedroom
suite.
Ardtur HouseThe front door leads to a vestibule with chequered tiled
floor then to the main reception hallway with wonderful
panelling to half height which incorporates bookshelves
and an impressive fireplace. Its parquet floor extends
into a further hallway off which are the principal reception
rooms.
The dining room has a bay window with outstanding
views over the water towards the Isle of Lismore, Isle of
Shuna and the hills of Morvern on the mainland beyond. It
has an ornate cornice and a substantial Jet Master open
fire.
The drawing room also has wonderful views over the
water, a bay window with views over the garden and an
open fire.
Folding doors open into the study with a pretty fireplace
and book shelves.

groundsThe grounds of Ardtur extend to some 15 acres and comprise
formal gardens, including a walled garden and tennis court, some
grazing and amenity woodland.
A private drive sweeps down towards the main house which has a
driveway to the rear with adequate parking space for a number of
cars. The garage block has a double garage and tractor store.
The driveway continues along the back of the walled garden to the
former stable block and kennels.
The walled gardens are splendid and include a number of fruit
trees. Directly in front of the main house is a level, well-tended
croquet lawn. Beyond this is a more formal area of garden which
is bound by a dry stone dyke, posts and wire fence. On the south
west side of the house is an En-Tout-Cas tennis court and a
substantial games pavilion. The field in front of the house leads to
the shore and a stone boat house with slip way.
Services Mains water supply, mains electricity and private drainage. There
is an oil fired central heating system. The new wing has under floor
