‘Celebrating International Day Of Light’ week

This year we decided to celebrate the International Day Of Light by conducting two outreaches in two different underprivileged schools at rural parts of West Bengal on the week of International Day Of Light.

This was the initiative taken by our chapter to reach out to the young minds and to inspire them on the areas of Basic Physics and Optics where we have demonstrated various phenomenon using the outreach kits, also some of our chapter members have made simple models using common household items. This was an awe inspiring moment for the young minds when they experienced the practical demonstrations which were conducted by our members along with a presentation on astronomy and basic optics. A quiz round was conducted at the end of the session where the winners were given prizes which were bought using the SPIE activity grant. The activity grant was also used in transportation.

Outreach activity at the Purba Barisha High School

This outreach was held on 14th of May, 2018 two prior to the IDL. About one hundred students from middle school were engaged in various activities as mentioned above.

The Annual SPIE meeting in San Diego

This year, the Techno India SPIE Student Chapter was represented at the annual SPIE meeting in San Diego, California by our Chapter Convener, Radhika Chatterjee. She attended the interactive and highly beneficial Student Leadership Workshop facilitated by Jean-luc Doumont. Starting from the group activities with students from different parts of the world to Mr. Doumont’s explanation on the skills required for communication and also the four levels of communication, the entire workshop was an enriching experience. She also participated in the annual Optics Outreach Games, where she demonstrated the following:-

· The working model of the first ever camera, The Camera Obscura based on the principles of reflection and projection.

· A Praxinoscope, made out of household items, which signified the origin of motion pictures and was based on the principle of persistence of vision. Among several events, Networking events such as Luncheon with Experts and Remembering Stephen Hawkings were very interesting and knowledgeable whereby she could come across professionals from various optical backgrounds. Also the Career Lab events which were excellently conducted by Mr. Dirk Fabian, was very helpful in the crucial decision making of our careers. Also the WIO event got her attention where Ms Nabiha Saklayen, CEO and Co-Founder of Cellino Biotech, Inc. beautifully deconstructed the stereotype of women working the field of STEM. Our hand-made chapter activity poster was appreciated by one and all, including the SPIE President Dr Maryellen Giger. They visited the various stalls at the SPIE job fair and interacted with representatives of the world’s leading Optics and Photonics manufacturing companies. They got the golden opportunity to meet and share ideas with students and scientists from all over the world.
