Chapter Mission
Created in February 2013, the chapter gathers PhD and Master Students from some Universities
of the country. Every year, our main mission is to advance light based technologies and help
support its associated community through participation and organization of activities such as
seminars, outreach projects, social events. Provide exciting educational, networking and learning
experience in the field of optics and photonics. This mission is conducted by each University in
its region which allows the recruitment of new members in the local chapter based in this
University. Our aim is to nurture intellectual, social and professional growth for each of our
members, through seminars and networking opportunities facilitated by SPIE.

Monthly Meeting and get together
The monthly meeting of SPIE student chapter Cameroon takes place one time each month at the
Laboratory of Modeling, Simulation in Engineering, Biomimetics and Prototypes (LaMSEBP).
During these meeting we discuss about our research projects, the evolution of optics and the
photonics in the international scientific community and we see how we can easily sensitize
people about those disciplines. During this year we organize a send forth of two of our members
(Talla Francis and Goune Geraud), after their graduation (Doctorat PhD). Some pictures of our
meeting during this year, are presented below.
Members of SPIE Cameroon during a monthly meeting, discussing about the activities and the events linked
to the “Education Outreach grant”.

namely Talla Francis and Goune Geraud.
Outreach and recruitment Activities
In our chapter, we have a paramount concern to sensitize Cameroonians on the fields of optics
and photonics. During this year, the Chapter organized manifestations in the Center (Yaounde and
Bafia), the West (Bansoa) and the Littoral (Douala) regions of Cameroon. In order to sensitize many
people about SPIE, Optics and Photonics, we totally did seven scientific manifestations in different
places. The first activity took place at a secondary school located at Yaounde called “College Bilingue La
Fierte”, In this school, we worked with more than three hundred and fifty (350) students. As for the
second activity, it took place at a school located at Yaounde called “College Jean Bodi Zybi”, during this
event we worked with thirty (30) students. As for the third scientific manifestation, it took place to
another high school located at Bafia (about 150km from yaounde) called “ Lycee Bilingue de Bokito”,
During that event, one had the representation of fifty students. Then, the fourth scientific activity took
place to a high school located at Bansoa (350 km from Yaounde) called “ Lycee Bilingue de Bansoa
Mbri”, we worked with fifty (50) students during that manifestation. The fifth event took place at a
cultural center located at Yaounde called “Cercle Bansoa”. The sixth scientific activity took place at
University of Yaounde 1. Finally the seventh scientific activity took place at a higher institute of
technology located at the economic capital of Cameroon (Douala) called, “Institut Supérieur
d'Enseignement Managerial et Technologique”. During the first fifth events, we distributed flyers to the
audience talking about the light in our daily life. We also given some talks and projected some videos
related to optics, photonics and SPIE. During the sixth scientific event, we invited a lecturer called Dr
Talla Mbe, from University of Dschang who gave an oral presentation to some teachers and researchers
from the Department of Physics of the University of Yaounde 1, with a view to proposing new methods
of valorisation of optics and photonics disciplines in Cameroon. Finally during the seventh and the last
event, we made superficially oral presentations, on the state of progress of research in the disciplines of
optics and photonics. Then we made some demos of manipulations, and finally we made a written
evaluation at the end of which we awarded the best. It is important to remember that this last event was
made in synergy with the OSA student chapter of Cameroon and IEEE student branch of Cameroon. The
representation in images of these events is made in the following sections.
