13 members left (6 of them finished PhD studies) and 8 members joined the chapter.
Chapter activities The organization of 7th International Young Scientist Conference “Developments in Optics
and Communications 2011” (DOC 2011) April 28-30 in Riga. More than 50 participants from
six countries. More information - http://www.osa-latvia.lv/doc/
Student chapter leadership workshop was organized during DOC 2011. Leaders from Univ. of
Latvia SPIE Student Chapter, Taras Shevchenko National Univ. of Kyiv SPIE Student Chapter
and Univ. of Latvia OSA Student Chapter shared their experiences on the management of
student chapters. Representatives of future Vilnius Univ. SPIE Student Chapter also attended
the meeting.
SPIE Education Outreach Grant 2011 - to help establish optics and photonics research
center. In spring 2011 SPIE Student Chapter of University of Latvia received the SPIE
Education Outreach Grant. The Grant was spent to purchase equipment for Optics and
photonics outreach center for students in the heart of Riga, Institute of Atomic physics and
Spectroscopy at University of Latvia. The idea of the center is to popularize science and
optics and photonics as an imprescriptible part of it among students in Latvia with an aim to
encourage them to choose studies in the field of science in the future. Hands-on
experiments are widely used in the center. Below one can observe photos of activities in
optics and photonics outreach centre.
Several members were involved in the organization of international scientific conference
Functional Materials and Nanotechnologies 2011. More information -

Participation in organizing School for Young Physicists where students and teachers of
Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, University of Latvia, teach and show interesting Physics
experiments to scholars from secondary schools of Latvia
Members of the chapter organized lectures at their institutions for school students
presenting their scientific work and laboratories and motivating youngsters to choose
studies in physics.
President of the chapter Dainis Jakovels attended conference “SPIE Optics + Photonics 2011”
and participated in Student Chapter Leadership Workshop. Later, he shared experience
giving talks at the seminar of Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy and ULSPIE
Student Chapter meeting.
Inga Saknite participated at 61st Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau which is a yearly event
where only a selected amount of young researchers (mostly, PhD or Master students) are
invited and meet with 25 Nobel Laureates.
Inga Saknite participated at Physics Summer School in Ljubljana, Slovenia, presenting her
research regarding optical properties of skin, as well as exchanging experiences with
researchers in the field of Medical Physics at University of Ljubljana.
8 new members joined the chapter – Inesa Ferulova, Raitis Grzibovskis, Sandis Spolītis, Andis
Supe, Aleksejs Udalcovs, Eriks Zaharans, Janis Zaharans and Elmars Zarins.
Our grants and awards 23 members received Europen Social Fund scholarship.
Inga Saknite received a grant to study Biomedical Engineering at Linköping University,
Sweden, as an exchange student (programme ERASMUS).
Lasma Asare - ThorLabs award for the Best Student Paper from a Developing Country.
Scientific activities of chapter members Scientific activities of chapter members cover such disciplines as atomic and molecular
spectroscopy, optical materials, vision science, bio-photonics, communications and non-
linear optics. Some examples of scientific activities are listed below:
- Development of novel organic materials and waveguides for nonlinear optical
applications so as the techniques for thin film linear and nolinear optical
characterization. The main goal is to develop a low optical loss and halfwave voltage
organic waveguide electro optical modulator with a several gigahertz bandwidth.
- Optical recording in light sensitive materials
- Eye optical system quality and image quality assessment.
4
- Study of the availability of different color print technologies (three layer
photographic process, tint printing) for creation of color vision test plates, for an
accurate diagnosis and grading of color vision anomaly.
- Color vision testing (tests and matching). Illumination and colorimetry, color
reproduction, color appearance. Eye aberrations and vision, contactlense optics.
- Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and multispectral imaging for in-vivo diagnostics of
skin vascular and pigmented lesions.
- RGB imaging for mapping of skin chromophore concentration.
- Obtaining and exploring the parametric images of autofluorescence fotobleaching
distribution in time and chromophore fluorescence lifetime distribution imaging.
- Research regarding optical properties of skin chromophores, mostly bilirubin,
including in vitro measurements of different substances in order to find spectra that
are similar to the spectra of skin chromophores (bilirubin, hemoglobin) and that are
stable in time.
- Study of blood microcirculation in skin with multi-spectral photoplethysmography at
465/530/780 nm (BRIR laser diode device) and at 465/530/630/870 nm (RGB and IR
LED device)
