Activity: CIOMP Public Day & China Aerospace Day

During the three days in late April, our chapter members cooperate with CIOMP on organizing

CIOMP Public Day & China Aerospace Day. Volunteers from our chapter prepare for enormous

demonstrations about optics and photonics. We designed posters and display boards for the

whole event, and offered enthusiastic service.

A variety of cameras, telescopes, microscope, 3D printing machine, laser engraving machine were

open to the public,and they all attracted the public’s attention.Besides,Jilin-1 Satellite Model and

2-meter SiC mirror were on display for the first time and they have attracted considerable interest

from the whole audience.

Also, hundreds of students from nearby schools received an invitation to visit the State Key

Laboratories in CIOMP. Members of SPIE CIOMP student chapter showed the audience around our

institute and the public were lucky enough to see lots of precision scientific instruments.

Activity: SPIE student members’ party

We offer free shuttles for our members to the restaurant and everyone paid for the meals for the

party. We enjoyed the tasteful hotpot foods which was a traditional way to put meat and

vegetables to a small pot with boiling water in. We could enhance understanding for each other in

the party. I believe that we can work more efficiently in the coming days.

Activity: Outreach-Seed of Light

As a traditional outreach activity, we continued to organize an outreach,whose name was “Seed of

Light”. SPIE CIOMP student chapter cooperated with OSA CIOMP student chapter, and volunteers

from the two chapters gave the audience a wonderful science lecture.Pupils from different schools

attended the lecture and they learned rich optical knowledge.

Activity: Talk between CIOMP & CNU

We feel honored to invited Miss Wenqi Xu, president of SPIE CNU Student Chapter and Miss Jing

Han, president of OSA CNU Student Chapter to our chapter during the Light Conference 2016. Dr.

Wu Sun, president of SPIE CIOMP Student Chapter,and Dr. Wen Liu,president of OSA CIOMP

Student Chapter gave Miss Xu and Miss Han a warm welcome.The talk was about how to organize

chapter activities and get more influence from the society.

Activity: CIOMP SPIE Student Chapter Seminar Evening

On 19 July, the CIOMP OSA/SPIE student chapter held an evening seminar for students, officers

from the CIOMP Fitness Club and representatives from Zhejiang University. Three main topics

were covered in the seminar, all of which aimed to support attendees in various aspects of their

scientific careers.

Dr. Sun Fangyuan, a student member of OSA, covered the first topic: the state of laser beam

combination research at home and abroad. Dr Sun explored the science and application of the

different methods in laser beam combination and led a lively discussion on the topic, in which

attendees showed great interest.

The second topic, on instructions for studying abroad, was presented by Dr. Zhang Nan, who

shared her experience of applying for a scholarship from China Scholarship Council. Dr Zhang

explained the process and requirements of a successful application. Some seminar attendees

were encouraged to apply to study abroad, and Dr Zhang promised to give them ongoing

mentoring to help increase their chances of success.

Miss Liu Yuhang, a student member of SPIE and president of the CIOMP Fitness Club, gave an

inspiring speech on the third topic of the evening: how to keep fit and lose weight. She was keen

that everyone should exercise regularly to keep healthy, and related that only in this way can we

maintain our energy for scientific research. Miss Liu and other officers of the CIOMP Fitness Club

invited everyone to join their free fitness program – since developing a strong body is fundamental

to maintaining an agile mind.

The seminar was a great success and the participants were unanimous in their hope that

interesting seminars are held regularly. Dr Feng Xianglian, secretary of SPIE Zhejiang University

Student Chapter, expressed her appreciation for the seminar and looked forward to further

successful evenings in the future.

Place: Jilin province science and technology culture center

Activity: Jilin Province Science & Technology Culture Center visiting

On September 25, all the student members of our chapter visited Jilin Province Science &

Technology Culture Center, and meanwhile, OSA CIOMP student chapter members and some

pupils from different schools were invited to take part in the activity. China Optical science &

technology Museum, Jilin Province museum, Jilin Province science & technology museum are all

located in this center.

We took most of the time in the science & technology museum, because we really enjoyed

ourselves while everyone can experience different scientific phenomena and learn about lots of

knowledge. People were attracted by multiple areas concentrating on various subjects, such as

light, force, electronics, sound, aerospace, computer, automobile manufacturing,

ecological.Maybe we can offer volunteer service for the public and teach them something

interesting.
