2. Stanford University Photonics Retreat (SUPR) April 3-5, 2009 Monterey, CA Check out the pictures and videos from SUPR 2009! The Stanford Optical Society and Stanford Photonics Research Center (SPRC) organized the first annual Stanford University Photonics Retreat (SUPR). As the largest and most complex event we have planned, it brought together approximately 65 graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty who are involved in photonics research at Stanford. The purpose of SUPR is to promote greater cross-disciplinary interaction within the Stanford photonics community. Now more than ever, research in photonics draws upon a variety of disciplines and results in a broad spectrum of applications. At Stanford, the students and faculty involved in optics and photonics research are spread across a variety of departments, including electrical engineering, applied physics, materials science, mechanical engineering, environmental science, biology, chemistry, and medicine. The retreat provided an opportunity to stimulate interactions among this dispersed group of researchers and to serve as a catalyst for fruitful collaborations. The retreat consisted of three days and two nights of programming that combined technical sessions, professional development, and social activities (see program below). The retreat helps create and strengthen relationships between attendees, making the Stanford photonics community more cohesive and productive.

5. Joint Chapter Trip to Maker Faire May 30, 2009 San Mateo, CA

The Stanford and UC Berkeley Chapters leveraged their joint interest in “how things work” as well as their collective buying power to purchase tickets for ~40 student chapter members and guests for the 2009 Maker Faire. Our chapter subsidized tickets for dues-paying OSA or SPIE members and carpooled to the San Mateo County Event Center for the fantastic event. From the makerfaire.com website, “Maker Faire is a two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. It's for creative, resourceful people of all ages and backgrounds who like to tinker and love to

make things.” The event was a phenomenal way to foster our continued intra-chapter relationship with Berkeley while celebrating our love for engineering. 6. Summer Recruitment BBQ / SUPR Reunion June 25, 2009 Stanford, CA This summer barbecue was planned as a way to reunite the attendees of the 2009 Stanford University Photonics Retreat. Over 50+ chapter members and guests enjoyed a beautiful summer afternoon to discuss optics, photonics, and which barbecue item was the most delicious.

7. Fall Recruitment BBQ September 29, 2009 Stanford, CA

We held our annual Welcome BBQ open to anyone interested in the optics/photonics community at Stanford. Students were able to sign up for committees to get involved in our speaker, outreach, and membership events. We were especially successful in recruiting volunteers for the 2009 Educators’ Day event (#8).

8. 2009 Educators’ Day Oct. 15, 2009 Stanford, CA Outreach Event: ~75 teacher participants - possibly impacting hundreds of

students

Science Educators' Day (EDAY) is an annual event held in conjunction with the Frontiers in Optics Conference/ Annual OSA Meeting. This year, the Stanford Optical Society, OSA and the OSA Foundation coordinated the event for local pre-college (middle and high school) teachers. The event was held on the Stanford campus, and focused on effective and innovative approaches to science education, with an emphasis on hands-on, interactive classroom lessons. Exhibitors (including over 15 volunteers from the Stanford Optical Society) brought low-cost experiments and demonstrations on optical phenomena that teachers could replicate in their classrooms. Teachers were able to enjoy a complimentary dinner and walked away with gift bags containing demonstration aids and lesson plans prepared by the Stanford Optical Society. 9. 2009-2010 Galileoscope Grants

November 2009 to February 2010 Outreach Activity: Estimated impact >700 students Thanks to a special donation by Prof. Joseph Goodman, we have begun to distribute Galileoscopes to local-area educators, free-of-charge. We developed an online application, and to date have delivered 90 Galileoscopes to 25 separate locations and plan to award approximately 30 more.

Planned activities

This upcoming year we hope to maintain high-quality joint events at Stanford and beyond. Below are some events that are already being planned by our Executive Team and volunteer committees.

National Ignition Facility Tour and Poster Session/MixerLawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Feb. 10, 2010 Livermore, CA

Together with the SPIE Chapter at UC Berkeley and OSA Chapter at San Francisco State University, we will be traveling for a backstage tour of the largest laser in the world at the National Ignition Facility (NIF)! There are approximately 90 total participants (for which security clearances were arranged). We have also organized a student poster reception / mixer with LLNL scientists and managers, and will be bringing 50+ student posters.

Stanford University Photonics Retreat (SUPR) 2010 April 9-11, 2010 Napa, CA We have already finished planning the second annual Stanford University Photonics Retreat (SUPR) in Napa, CA. We have confirmed 12 invited speakers including: Dr. David Welch (Infinera), Dr. Milton Chang (Incubic), Dr. Rachel Won (Nature Photonics), and current Stanford faculty and young alumni. Note: the funds for this retreat are being raised in collaboration with the Stanford Photonics Research Center (SPRC). In addition to using our SPIE traveling lecturer grant, we have received a private donation, a grant from the Stanford Vice-Provost for Graduate Education (VPGE), and a grant from OSA.

Continued technical seminar series April 22nd, 2010: Martin Roscheisen, CEO of Nanosolar 2010 International Student Photography Competition (outreach) Competition January 1, 2010 until March 1st, 2010 As part of our 2010 outreach activities, we will be sponsoring a student photography competition targeted at middle and high school students. We are expanding this year's contest to international community and are excited for other student chapters to join us in this outreach effort! This contest is an excellent outreach activity, being an effective way of stimulating interest in optics in pre-university students. We already have 5 other international collaborators for our 2010 photo contest, and expect more (for more information, visit the contest website at http://photocontest.stanford.edu). We are asking for grant support for the awards. California Academy of Sciences Nightlife Trip (collaborative) March 4, 2010 The California Academy of Sciences is a natural history and science museum in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. We visited the facility (also a cross chapter activity) in the Fall of 2008, shortly after it reopened after a major renovation to view its major attractions including: a planetarium, aquarium, natural history museum, and 4-story rainforest. We would like to return to the museum with UC Berkeley and San Francisco State during a special Thursday evening "nightlife" event, specifically for graduate students. A weekly event at the Academy, nightlife is a special time to visit the exhibits with live DJ music while food and cocktails are available for purchase. SPLASH: One-day optics course for local high school students (outreach) April 17, 2010 SPLASH http://stanfordesp.org/learn/index.html is a one-day marathon of classes for Bay Area students in grades 7-12 (ages 11-18 if homeschooled). Stanford OPTICAL SOCIETY will teach hands-on optics courses geared towards this age group and share our experiences studying science through K-12, in undergrad, and in grad school. The students sign up for classes they are interested in, and travel to campus for an interactive day of learning. Our course in 2008, E166: Building an Optical Communication System, taught the basics of optical communication systems- lasers, optical fibers, and photodetectors. Science on a Shoestring Budget & Grant Writing Workshop (outreach) April 27, 2010 – Stanford Campus This year, funding resources are extremely scarce for local K-12 teachers. We see an opportunity to bring science teachers together and show them: 1) Science on a Shoestring Budget: will provide simple, effective optics demonstrations that have minimized “overhead” teacher effort and use objects available at minimal cost 2) Grant Writing Workshop: interactive focused workshop on learning about grant opportunities available to K-12 teachers and how to successfully apply. We envision this as an activity before or after EDAY 2009 to further strengthen local teachers’ connections with each other and build a useful community Chapter T-Shirts We would like to make Chapter T-shirts to distribute to our members. Our chapter has never had any logo items that we could give to our members to identify with our

12

organization. These would be especially helpful for our volunteers at external outreach events, or during cross-chapter activities. Lick Observatory Tour Date TBD This activity is a trip with chapter members and Prof. Bob Byer (former OSA President, and current OSA advisor) up to Lick Observatory. Participants will have a chance to tour the facilities and also do some observing with telescopes. We believe this will be a nice social event that will combine a visit to an observatory and telescopes there, with amateur astronomy in the evening over cookies and hot cocoa. Prof. Byer is a serious amateur astronomer and his presentation and amateur astronomy demos at the photonics retreat last year were very well received.
