MOTIVATORUAAP sensation likesto attack andmotivate histeammates.

    AUGUST DELA CRUZ

    Will fortune smile

on Jeric Fortuna?By Randolph B. Leongson

JERIC Fortuna always subscribed to the philosophyof taking things one game at a time. But with hislast playing year in the UAAP this season, though,

Of course, I want to win thechampionship, he said.

Standing at 5-foot-7 andweighing in at about 155pounds, the 20-year-old teamcaptain of the UST GrowlingTigers doesnt really impose athreatening presence on the oth-er teams in the UAAP espe-cially not with reigning champ

Ateneo flaunting seven-footerGreg Slaughter and upstart NU

anchored by an oversized wing-man in Bobby Ray Parks.

After losing their debut by ahairline against the FEU Tama-raws, the Tigers bounced backin style. Thanks to their fightinghearts and composure, the Es-paa-based dribblers won thenext five, including thrilling vic-tories over titlists Ateneo BlueEagles and De La Salle U. TheTigers also tamed the NationalUniversity Bulldogs.

    History teaches us to be

wary of the little men, though.Especially little men with big

dreams. After all, Alexander theGreat, who is about the samesize as Fortuna, conqueredthe world with his leader-ship.

Fortunas goal may beless grandiose, but it is as

important to him as con-quering nations was to

Alexander. But Fortunadoesnt let it get to him.

I dont really think aboutthe pressure. All I want to doin every game is to give my bestand help the team win, hesaid.

Fortuna learned a lot fromthe USTs former floor generalJaps Cuan, the quarterback ofthe champion 2006 team, in his

rookie season in 2008.He (Cuan) helped me a lot,Fortuna said. Back then, I usedto be nervous and overeagerbut he calmed me a lot andtaught me to look for my ad-

vantages and use it in-game.With slick passes and finesse

floaters in his arsenal and anadded punch from his deadlyrainbow shots, the diminutiveplaymaker, who averaged team-

best 14.1 points, 3.4 assists, and1.5 steals per game last UAAPseason, can be a headache.

But more than the individualaccolades, the BS Marketingmajor thinks that the core ofthe team is ready to lead the

Tigers to glory land.Weve been together for two

years. We know each other sowell, said Fortuna. I think thisis our (USTs) biggest chance to

win the title. And Fortunas telling the truth.

Parks shows the wayNATIONAL Universitys BobbyRay Parks sustained his stronggame a season after bagging theUAAP Most Valuable Playeraward.

Although on track of win-ning the top individual plumagain, Parks said hes more fo-cused on playing a better team

game in the Bulldogs campaignin the mens basketball tourna-ment.

Youre only as good as yourlast game so you always haveto motivate the team, saidParks, who currently leads theleague in points (18.3 pointsper game) and assists (5.3apg).

Parks also recently poweredthe Bulldogs to their first back-to-back victories to clinch the

UAAP Press Corps Player of the

Week award, the citation givenby sports scribes covering thecollegiate beat and ACCEL3XVI.

Last Thursday, Parks starredas the Bulldogs rallied from 13points down to shock the erst-

while unbeaten Far Eastern Uni-versity, 61-57.

Parks buried 17 markers, highlighted by six of NUs lastseven points, to lead the Bull-dogs to the victory that snappedthe Tamaraws four-game win-ning streak.

The son of seven-time PBABest Import Bobby Parks alsograbbed six rebounds anddished out six assists in the up-set win.

Three days later, Parksteamed up with Cameroonian

    Emmanuel Mbe in towing the

Bulldogs to a 77-62 drubbing ofAdamson.

Parks delivered 12 points, 11boards and five assists for theBulldogs, who improved to a 4-2 record.

We talked about followthrough before the game andthat was the word of the day.

We wanted to follow throughour win against FEU and treat-ed this game as a very impor-tant game, said NU coach Eric

    Altamirano.Parks edged Mbe, Ateneos

Greg Slaughter and Nico Salva,FEUs Terrence Romeo and Uni-

versity of Santo Tomas AljonMariano for the weekly plum.

We just have to continue be-ing focused and relaxed in ourgames, the 19-year-old Parks

    said.

    PERPETUALS EARL THOMPSON

Keeping his feeton the groundBy Alexx Esponga

    A

FTER finishing at the bottom of the cellar lastseason, the University of Perpetual Help Sys-

tem Dalta had gotten into their senses and fi-nally woke up from the nightmare they have been ex-periencing for quite sometime now.

This year, they gave every-one a big bang after bagging sixout of eight wins in the elimina-tion round of the Season 88 ofthe National Collegiate Athletic

    Association.The boys are getting closer

    and closer to making history

but despite the success that theteam is experiencing now, onestill remains silent and jittery

with these words in mind:Im happy about it but I

dont push my luck too hard, said Earl Scot Thompson. Themost important thing for us is

to stay humble and keep ourfeet on the ground no matter

what we achieve. Before clinching win inside

the court, Thompson first makessure that his heart was right toplay the game he loves. He alsosaid that it was the best strate-gy he has to improve as a teamplayer.

Hoops and characterAfter several times of spear-

heading the Perps to victory, in-cluding their fifth game wherehe contributed 16 points, 11 re-bounds, nine assists and fivesteals, the Digos City native hasproved that he has the skillsand the talent to go against allodds.

But he isnt too overwhelmedby his accomplishments for theteam, Basketball is a teamsport kaya kung ano man angnagagawa ng team namin, hindilang dahil sa akin yun. Team ef-fort yun.

The recent victories they hadalso did not change him as aperson and if it did, thosechanges were for the better.

Maramingnagsasabi na hindinaman ako nag-babago kahit mag-anda ang laronamin, the 19-

year old swing-man said. Atalam ko rin na-man sa sarili kona hindi ako nag-bago.

    The all-around

player believesthat he is doingthe task given tohim inside thecourt and whatmakes him a littledifferent fromother players isthat he does his

job excellentlywith character, in-tegrity and spirit.

Inspired and motivatedThere are two words that

Thompson has in mind and it ishis secret on putting on a goodshow for the people who intent-ly watch him, I am inspired by

my family, my loloand lola and God,most of all. Mycoaches also arethe keep me moti-

    vated. Pina-palakas nila angloob ko.

    And because ofthat, no matter

what stands in hisway, he is deter-mined to just dohis best and exe-

cute plays thatwould lift histeam to victory.

Kung cheersman o boos angnaririnig ko, okaylang. Basta ako, laro lang ako nglaro at gagawinko ang best ko.

He is also con-vinced that no matter how hehas improved during his stay

with UPHSD, there is still room

for more new things andThompson is eager to find allthose out.

Marami pa akong kailanganmatutunan, the 60 Thompson

admits. The team needs morepractice and more training.

Although he knows thatthere is so much more to learn,Thompson said that he is con-tented of where they are nowand he considers that a blessing.

Behind the sceneThompson also adores the

LA Lakers and his favorite play-er in the NBA is Kobe Bryant. He also enjoys chilling out and

    watching the television with

adobo on the side.He also loves to dance and

play video games, particularlyNBA 2K12 in his spare time.Thompson also keeps hishandy-motto in life wheneverhe needs it, mostly during wheneverything seems impossible.

For this young player, thenightmare is completely goneand it is his chance to take overthe wheel, decide whatever he

    wants to dream about and

    hopefully, convert it to reality.

Happy HappiIT was indeed a Happi end-ing for Emilio Aguinaldo Col-lege in the 88th NCAA mensbasketball tournament last

    week.Thanks to Cameroonian

import Cedric Happi Noubenamed the leagues AC-CEL/3XVI NCAA Press Corps

Player of the Weekthe lowlyGenerals snapped a seven-game skid and, at least, endedtheir first-round campaign ona positive note.

The 6-foot-7 Happi Noubetallied 26 points, 14 boards, three blocks, two assists, andtwo steals in the Generals 93-94 loss to San Sebastian lastJuly 30.

But it was his similarlydominant performance

against College of St. Benildelast Saturday that led to a winand earned him the nod ofsportswriters covering thecountrys oldest collegiateleague.

Every time happy ako kayHappi, said Generals coachGerry Esplana, whose foreignrecruit ranks second in theNCAA in rebounding (12.9)and fifth in scoring (18.3).Im very much satisfied withhis work ethic.

    UP WINGMAN MIKE SILUNGAN

Taking the Last ShotBy Patrick Leonard MayoI

T HAS BEEN THREE seasons since the UP FightingMaroons and the entire Diliman community wel-comed the arrival of their supposed savior in

Michael Jeffrey Mike Silungan and so far, the teamhas yet to rise from the cellar in the UAAP mens bas-ketball standings.

With UPs last UAAP champi-onship dating back to 1986 andits last stint in the Final Four al-ready 14 years old, Silunganfeels that this year could be thebreakout year the Fighting Ma-roons have long been waitingfor. Honestly, this yearschances for the team aregreater than all the years that Ihave played for UP. We have goteight seniors on the team thathas been together for the lastthree to four years and we also

have good rookies and roleplayers who can spark us anytime. We also have a hardwork-ing and disciplined coachingstaff which brings out the bestin us every practice, said the 6-foot-3 streak-shooting forward

who is playing in his final yearin the league.

Be like MikeHim being named after the

greatest basketball player of alltime is one reason why he fell

in love with the game of basket-ball and his coach and team-mates know very well what hecan bring for the team whichincludes taking the games lastshot. Coach (Ricky Dandan)told me to just play my gameand he knows what I am capa-ble of doing, and being a leaderand captain of our team, I amexpected to set good examplesfor my teammates especially therookies, said the former ballerfrom Conant High School inChicago, Illinois.Stepping up to challenges

Silungan has been criti-cized practically his entire ca-reer in the UAAP for being a

volu me shoo ter who neve rshies away from pulling thetrigger from the beyond thethree-point arc and for hisquestionable shot selectionsand this year, he is preparedto take on the challenge ofproving his critics wrong.

Something that I focused onimproving this off-season wasmy shooting percentage. Lastseason, my percentages werelower than normal and I am de-termined to bring up my shoot-ing averages in all areas.

Breaking out of the slumpUP has been a team that is

easily discounted by pundits, considering its dismal perfor-mances in recent years includ-ing a winless season followedby a 2-12 record last year. But

the Maroons can never be de-nied that they had some closegames that could have gonetheir way. And if their openinggame was a sign of things tocome, then things are indeedlooking bright for UPand Silungan. In thatgame, theyerased adouble-digit deficit

against theDLSU GreenArchers late inthe fourth peri-od in their open-ing game andgave the guysfrom Taft a bigscare.

Despite theloss, Silunganshowed his bril-liance andleadership onthe floor as heled his teamin scoring

    with 18markers.

And with amore sol-id cast, thanksto re-turning veterans Mark Lopez toman the point and Alvin Padillato help in the wings, Silungan

believes that they now have thetools to put an end to the Ma-roons miseries on the court.

It will take a lot of heart, will, teamwork, trust and fightfor us to get out of the slump.Im not saying we are going to

win the championship but weare going to do everything wecan to get there, he added.

Looking aheadWith his playing days in the

UAAP dwindling, Silungan looksto finish his career and his stud-ies in college before moving tothe next level.

My plans after the season isto graduate first then play forthe PBA D-League to further de-

velop my game and get it readyfor the pro league, he ended.

wracking game.It is also puzzling to see

    star-struck courtside re-porters. By being star-struck,

one loses her/his objectivity. The problem, of course,

doesnt end at courtside.Blame their youthful exuber-ance, some who do the play-for-play are guilty of makingmountain out of a molehill.

Heres an example. Aplayer makes a difficult shotand our man facing the cam-era suddenly became a Nos-tradamus. He suddenly sawgreatness. To think it, was an

elimination game. Wheehh!Clearly, much has to bedone. And besides, evenMang Perpecto isnt perfect.

It will not hurt, though, ifwe add common sense andspice of knowledge to thecoverage.

Remember, beauty shouldnot be skin deep.

    NOWADAYS, those whopride themselves as

Mr.Know-It-All of Philippinesports, basketball in particu-lar, are a dime a dozen.

This is understable, ofcourse. Though the UAAP re-mains ahead in viewership, itis clear that the NCAA isfighting tenaciously not to beleft behind. The countrysoldest sporting league wantsto stay ahead.

Thats why TV coverages(AKTV for NCAA, and Studio

23 for UAAP) have becomecolorful as ever. Its the rat-ing games, remember?

As a result, there is asudden surge of job open-ings for analysts, commen-tators, courtside reporters,etc.... for both networks.

Really, this is welcomenews for all of us. Be-cause of the fierce com-

    N the world of

chess, the real bat-tle is in the mindbut reaching the pinna-cle requires one thingand that is none otherthan the heart.

Luckily, the young Knightsof the Colegio de San Juande Letran do not only havethe minds but the hearts, as

well, to relive the glory daysthat have once been theirs.

On their first year in theNational Collegiate Athletic

Association Chess Juniors Di-vision, Paulo Bersamina andAlexis Osena have seenenough in the past years andare ready to bring home thetitle.STARTING EM YOUNG

    Both Bersamina and Ose-

na have started youngin playing chess and it

    was love at first sight.

Osena learned thegame when she wasfive years old whileBersamina tookhold of a chess-board when he

    was only four.Winning

games werent aproblem becausethese bright kidshave got more toshowcase than mere

talent. Four years lat-er after just knowingthe game, Bersamina

won his first gold medalwhen he topped the NationalAged Group Under-8 Compe-tition and since then, he be-came unstoppable.

Osena, on the other hand, also made a name for herselfin the field of Davao City.Coach Roland Perez was justimpressed and he recruitedthe freshman to play for Le-

    tran this season.Bersamina, however, just

let fate determine the path ofhis career. After studyingfrom one school to another,he finally found where he be-longed.

Galing ako sa isangschool sa Pasay tapos,

nag-UE ako at La Salleng apat na taon, saidthe junior Bensamina.Bumalik ulit ako ng

Pasay tapos Letran naat dito na ako nag-stay talaga.

And since theyredoing such a fantas-tic job, the sport re-

wards the hardworkthat they are invest-ing in so many ways.

    Ang pinaka-masayang experience ay

yung nakakapunta kami saibang bansa para i-represent

    ang Pilipinas, quipped

Bersamina who already hasbeen to Vietnam, Singapore,Indonesia and Malaysia.Masarapang pakiramdamkasi nakakapunta kami saibat ibang lugar para luma-ban.

Osena and Bersamina carrythe bloodline of champs whichgives them more advantage. The only thing they need todo now is bring that attitudeof winning to the NCAA.

New beginningSa laro na to, mahalaga

ang tiwala sa sarili, said theQuezon Province native Ose-na. Maraming magagaling, lalo na dito sa league na to,pero dapat confident ka samga gagawin mo.

Bersamina and Osena arechallenging themselves toleave the past behind as theymake their debut in the old-

est league in the country andstart a new beginning of tri-umph.

Pinaghahandaan talaganamin to kasi alam ko namas mahirap ang labanan di-to Bersamina said. 3 pm to8 pm ang training naminpero sa bahay, talagang nag-aaral pa kami ng chess.

Though these kids are lit-tle in size, they have bighearts for the game and

    minds fit for champs.

AFTER snapping a five-gamelosing streak by bestingAdamson, UE Red Warriors

coach Jerry Codiera summed it per-fectly.

    I justtold the

    boysthat

    thingswill getbetter.HHHHH

    UST coach

    Pido Jarencioon injured

    wingman Jer-ic Teng.

    He recov-ers quickly, he

    just needssome rest.Teng sus-tained medialcollateral liga-ment (MCL)injury on his

left knee.HHHHHWe expected them to come back, given that

they are the defending champions, what is im-portant is that we made the stops and didnttry to protect the lead, said SSC coach TopexRobinson after the Stags downed defendingchampion San Beda, 80-71.

    HHHHH

Its not really the game we visualized, butwell take the win anytime, said DLSU coachGee Abanilla after the Archers repulsed Adam-son Falcons, 56-52. I think LA Revillas injurythrew us off a little bit.

    HHHHH

Adamson mentor Leo Austria on missingAlex Nuyles.

This is where we miss Nuyles, when no-bodys willing to take the shot when the gameis on the line. A shoulder injury put Nuylesout of the season.

    HHHHH

Im still looking for consistency from myteam, said College of St. Benilde Blazerscoach Richard del Rosario, whose team actual-ly had its best first-round start since he tookover last season.

    HHHHH

Ateneo mentor Norman Black on facingtough challenges.

Every game that we play, were definitelygoing to get the other teams best effort. Justbecause were Ateneo it doesnt mean its goingto be easy. We respect the other teams and

what they bring to the game.HHHHH

The key was our composure, which wasone thing lacking in the team, said NationalUniversity mentor Eric Altamirano after theBulldogs snapped the four-game winning run

    of FEU Tamaraws, 61-57.
