“We are concerned that eightfellow Filipinos are now beingaccused of an offense that car-ries a penalty of death. That’s il-legal because Sabah belongs tothe sultanate of Sulu,” dinagdagniya.

“This year, all our efforts aregeared toward increasing our2012 palay production of about18 million metric tons by twomillion more, to achieve ourgoal in the Food Staples Suffi-ciency Program (FSSP),” aniya.

“The FSSP defines self-suffi-ciency as the country’s ability tomeet its national food require-ments, while maintaining abuffer stock to be used in timesof need,” ani Alcala.

Sinabi niyang malaki na angibinaba ng pag-angkat ng bigasmula 2.4 milyon MT noong2010 pababa sa 860,000 noong2011, at sa 500,000 MT nitong2012, tanda ng pagsulong ngprograma sa sapat na ani.

Understanding infertilityconceptions of fertilitytreatment.

Ramonito Tampos,Merck Inc. presidentand managing directorand Merck SeronoPhilippines generalmanager, said “it cov-ers about 10 countriesin Asia Pacific. And thereasons why we wantthis study is basicallylooking at careers, is-sues, and challengesfor couples. The resultof the study is basedon a specific problemwith women that alsolooks into the knowl-edge of fertility prob-lems and the miscon-ceptions about the fer-tility treatment. One

major result of thestudy, according to thefindings, is that thereis a very strong levelof desire for parent-hood. This is almost80 percent amongstwomen in Asia.”

While there is astrong desire, readi-ness to conceive varydifferently that morethan half of countriesstudied showed thathusbands’ readinesswas more of an influ-ence than their own. There are other im-portant factors thataffect the readiness toconceive like personalfulfillment, security inhealth, marriage andtheir financial status.

The knowledgeabout fertility among

Asian women is verylimited. Only 43 per-cent of them under-stand that a couplewould be classified asinfertile if they fail toconceive after oneyear of trying, 36 per-cent realize that awoman in her fortieshas a lower chance ofgetting pregnant, 32percent know that ahealthy lifestyle doesnot necessarily guar-antee fertility, 30 per-cent recognize thatobesity can reduce fer-tility, and half of therespondents wronglybelieve that a womanwho never menstru-ates is still fertile.

This might be thecause of their attitudestoward fertility that

Asians are expected tobe conservative andreserved. But womendisagree when seekingfertility treatment. They are actually openand not embarrassedabout the subject.

Some other fertili-ty misconceptions saythat 49 percent be-lieve that if a manproduces sperm, he isfertile, and 43 percentbelieve that as long asa man can achieve anerection, he is fertile.

There are barriersto the readiness ofAsian women, despitethe high desire for par-enthood, because offinding a specialist whocan help, the cost oftreatment and the em-ployer support. Accord-

ing to their respon-dents, 50 percent haveno idea where theirnearest fertility centeris, 77 percent associatehigh cost with fertilitytreatment, and 40 per-cent believe employerswill not allow time offfor fertility treatment.

The campaign’s keyactions include help-ing couples under-stand what infertilityis by giving educationthat causes infertilityand to further in-crease knowledge forboth men and womenabout fertility issues.

Merck will alsolaunch Hope for Start-ing Families campaign, which seeks patientswith low level of un-derstanding about theconditions that pre-vent them from con-ceiving, and givetreatment options.

It will highlight theavailability of a fullspectrum of treatmentmethods in the Philip-pines through the ex-pertise of Filipino in-fertility specialists andtreatments centers.

For more informa-tion, log on to www.fertilityphilippines.com.Patients will receive ahandbook that servesas a resource and diaryfor couples.

Daniel still dreams of being a rock starhis birthday concert—not forfear of not filling up the venue, but because he’ll be carrying ashow on his own.

“I’ll be doing some hits fromThe Beatles and other rock songsfrom the 1960s and ’70s,” hesaid. “I’m not nervous about theturnout. You can’t control that.Kung wala, eh ’di wala. Beingparanoid won’t change a thing.”

While his singing can be suf-ficiently good and his tone easi-ly recognizable, Daniel doesn’tbelieve he’s cut out to be asoloist.

Not for his diehard fans, though. His self-titled debut al-bum, which includes six covers, reached platinum status(20,000 copies sold) less thanthree months after Star Recordsreleased it in May last year.

Asked if a follow-up is in theworks, Daniel confirmed plansfor a new record. “It would bebetter, though if I can do it withmy band,” he said.

Debutante Julia, on tackling adult rolesNi Allan Policarpio

JULIA Montes, who’s celebrat-ing her 18th birthday today, sees being of legal age both ex-citing and daunting.

“I’m quite scared [because it]means more responsibilities,”Julia told the INQUIRER duringher recent launch as an endors-er of Your Own Time watches.“But I’m excited because it’s anew chapter in my life.”

Big breakJulia got her big break at

15, when she was cast, alongwith Kathryn Bernardo, in the2010 remake of the ABS-CBNdrama series “Mara Clara.”When the show ended the fol-lowing year, Kathryn (a yearyounger than Julia) continueddoing teenybopper roles. Ju-lia, on the other hand, wenton to portray characters fit formore experienced actresses.

Julia played an abused wifewho suffered a miscarriage in“Walang Hanggan,” and, morerecently, a prostitute in“Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK).”

The transition from whole-some to mature roles wasshocking at first, the half-Ger-

man actress confessed. But forJulia, accepting projects thatmost girls her age would turndown has improved her acting.

“I felt pressured when thenetwork started offering me

roles usually reserved for my se-niors,” she said. “At the sametime, it was flattering that theytrusted me with those.”

ResearchFor the “MMK” role, Julia

said, she observed prostitutes inseveral night clubs, taking noteof how they conducted them-selves. “I treated it like a schoolproject,” she said. “Challengesmake me happy.”

She meant to immerse her-self in the character so muchthat—if it wasn’t for herage—she would have watched alive strip show. Instead, shewatched Vilma Santos’ dancesequence in Celso Ad Castillo’s“Burlesk Queen” which, shesaid, gave her goose bumps. “Iwatched it to get an idea ofhow girls in clubs danced on-stage. It was enthralling.”

But no amount of study andresearch could prepare her forthe more sensitive scenes sheneeded to do with a Japaneseactor she had just met. The ideaof touching a stranger had hertrembling all over before thetake. “Thankfully, I think mynervousness actually helped,”she said, laughing. “My acting

came out more natural as a re-sult. Besides, it’s also true thatyou learn a lot from these expe-riences.”

No objectionsDidn’t her family have

reservations about her play-ing a prostitute? “They hadno objections,” Julia said. “Allthey wanted to know was, if Ireally wanted to do it—andcould I? They understandthat I would like to takecharge of my personal lifeand career. I think seriouslyabout my future in this busi-ness.”

Her willingness to acceptmature roles is fueled by her in-tention of following in the foot-steps of actress Claudine Barret-to, her idol. Julia explained:“She’s a versatile actress. Shewasn’t boxed into a particulartype—she can be good, bad, sensual or crazy. That’s the kindof career I want to have.”

While she’s up for anythingchallenging, Julia draws theline at doing a sexy pictorial fora men’s magazine. Not to sayshe is closing her doors forever.Everything has a right time, shepointed out.

B EFORE venturing into acting and becoming thefan-girl magnet that he is right now, DanielPadilla dreamed of becoming a rock star.

And for the past two years orso, he has been playing bass for aband called Parking 5, composedof his brother JC on lead vocalsand three of his closest friends onguitars and drums.

Daniel is slated to hold a so-lo birthday concert on April 30at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“We’re (Parking 5) into alter-native rock and we cover songsby Guns N’ Roses, Oasis, LedZeppelin, The Killers and a lotmore,” Daniel told the INQUIRERrecently. “Right now we play instudios or in our homes. Wedon’t have regular gigs yet, butI hope we land some in thenear future.”

But though he’d like to playmusic as often as he can,Daniel’s busy schedule allows

him to do only a few casualjamming sessions here andthere. That’s why he readilygrabs projects that involve mu-sic, such as his recent stint as asong interpreter in the recentlyconcluded Himig Handog song-writing competition.

Before a sea of screamingteens during the tilt’s grand fi-nals earlier this year, Danielperformed composer JungeeMarcelo’s “Nasa Iyo na ang La-hat.” It didn’t make the top five, but the song won various audi-ence choice awards. “It was agreat experience and I had fun.I want to do more of that,”Daniel said with an air and tonereminiscent of his uncle Robin’s.

He admitted being verymuch pressured this early for
