mataas sa paglagong 3.7 porsyento na naitala noong 2011.

    It was also a celebration

of their outstanding win inthe Asian 5 Nations Division1 Championship, whichbrings them one step closerin their quest to qualify forthe 2015 Rugby World Cupin England.

Our new sports heroes aremovie-star material. Shouldthey decide to join show biz,the Rugby Boys need not

worry about the usual sexu-al-preference rumors thatmost actors have to endure,

since these guys simply oozewith testosterone from headto toe!

Got to chat with two ofthe Volcanoes hotties, JakeLatts and Joseph Matthews.Overwhelming charm in-deed!

Would you say that theVolcanoes are more popularnow than the Azkals?

Jake Latts: Theres no ri-valry between us and there

    shouldnt be. We both play

    for the Philippines.

Joseph Matthews: Nocompetition. We wish eachother well. Their victoriesand our victories are for allthe Filipinos who support us.

Would you go into showbusiness if a good offercame along?

JL: Id rather concentrateon rugby. I cant serve twomasters. One would sufferbecause I cannot divide mytime or attention. Doing adsand posing for billboards are

as show biz as it gets for me.JM: As long as it does not

get in the way of mysportbut rugby will alwaysbe my priority.

How do you deal withdiscrimination by your de-tractors who pick on yousince youre not 100 per-cent Filipino?

JL: We cant choose ourparents. Most of us on theteam are half-Filipino. That

    doesnt make us less Filipino,

even if we dont speak Taga-log fluently. We play rugby

with our hearts for Filipinos.JM: People judge us be-

cause our skin is a different

color. But we have Filipinoblood. I hope they give us asporting chance. After all, wegive every game our bestshot to foster Filipino pride.

How Filipino are you?JL: Im friendly and I have

a ready smile for everyone. Ihave an affinity for thePhilippines even if Im basedin Australia. But rugby is abig sport there so I get totrain more when Im in Aus-

tralia.JM: Im amazed at howsupportive Filipino fans are. They bring us food and giftsand they make us feel idol-ized. In Australia, its more ofstatistics. Filipinos are closeto my heart. Like them, I

work hard but I also knowhow to have fun!

After yo ur win againstSri Lanka, dont you feelthe pressure to outdo your-

self with every game?JL: Thats part of thepackage. We have to step upto the challenge.

JM: Pressure is good. Itmakes us perform better.

Is there unspoken rivalrywithin the team?

JL: None at all. Our broth-erhood is beyond rugby. Be-ing half-Filipino we all havea common bond.

JM: Were one big happyfamily. Its no big deal who is

more popular. At the end ofthe day, we are one solidteam.

How are your love lives?JL: Im single. I just split

up with my Italian girlfriend.Im open to dating Filipinogirls. But I wouldnt datesomeone whod be jealous ofmy sport. For me to fall forher, she should love not onlyme but also what I do.

    JM: Im happily married.

THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2012 7FEATURESSurprise call raises questions

years of absolutely nocommunication, I sud-denly hear his voice

on the other end ofthe line. It was crazy,Joe. He called to in-form me that hes suf-fering from infectionsdue to diabetes, and tomake the picture moretragic, he also has aheart disease. After hisand hellos he blurtedit out. He is badly inneed of an organdonor for his kidneys.

Now this is whereit gets crazier, Joeheexplained to me that Iam the perfect matchfor an organ donor;his siblings are too oldand his children withthe rich woman aretoo young. HonestlyJoe, at first I felt asudden rush of glad-ness. I thought, this isit! He deserves every-thing thats happeningto him right now. But,after realizing that hegave life to me, I feltguilty and I felt so

    worried. I just brokeinto tears.

The next day hecalled up again. Hetold me that he doesntneed my kidney. Hesaid that he would justlike to take this oppor-tunity so I could mi-grate to the US. I willact as a compatible or-gan donor on my waythere for the opera-tions. He assured methat he could easilybuy a kidney else-

    where.Joe Im scared. I

    told this to my family

and friends and theysaid to me that itcould be a possibleset-up. One of myfriends told me thatmy dad would bringme there for the realpurpose of gettingone of my kidneys. It

would be pretty easyfor them, Joe. When Iget there, they couldlock me up. And

knowing Im not fa-miliar with the place,or even anyone there,I would have

    nowhere to go.Im really scared

Joe. I have alwayswanted to go to theUS and look for green-er pastures. But whatif my friends are right?

Im so confused. Itisnt easy to give up akidney for someone

who has turned hisback on my mom andI. I dont know what todo. My ambition tellsme to go fulfill mydreams of earning dol-lars and just give oneof my kidneys away, knowing I still have a

spare. But my familyand friends are tellingme otherwise. Whatshould I do, Joe?

    Sincerely yours,Ferdie

FERDIE,I honestly think thatthis should just be anissue of whether youare willing to give upone of your kidneys sothat your father couldhave a chance at lifeagain and not an es-cape to go to the US.You simply have to ask

yourself if you are will-ing to sacrifice for yourdad. If you are not, then you should noteven think of goingthere pretending to bean organ donor.

    I know how inviting

Dear Joe,Please call me Ferdie. Im a call centeragent crawling every night to make aliving. I have been in this industry forthree years now, and still not happywith what Im doing.

First of all,Im gay, Imold, and Imstill loveless. But its notabout gay re-lationshipsthat Im writ-ing about. Its

about my dad.Joe, for the past

life abroad can some-times be but you havemade it this far with-out any help from yourdad. I dont see anyreason why you should

stop pursuing yourdreams on your own.You should be givingup your organ because

you want to and notbecause it will be yourticket to a life in theUS. Remember, gettingthere is one thing andbeing able to live thereand work is another.

    The only reasonyou should donate

your organ is becauseyou love your fatherand you want him tolive longer. Dont do it

because you wantsomething in return.Remember, not all whotry their luck abroadbecome successful. Those who truly suc-ceed are those who be-lieve in their dreamsand those who believein themselves regard-less of who they areand where they are. If

you really want to goto the US then yourticket isnt your fatherbut your own will anddetermination.

Forgive your dadfor his actions in the

past. This will helpyou find closure. Pur-sue your dreams andnever give up.
