REO Brothers Wow Beatle Fanatics at the CavernBy Tom C. Banguis Jr

A "dream-come-true" gig at the Cavern Club, the legendaryLiverpool club, drew the "performance-of-a-lifetime" fromthe Philippines' own Fab 4, the REO Brothers, who had thepredominantly British crowd, yelling for encores at theconclusion of a tight 11-song set!

The lead singer of the Cavern Beatles, the houseband at the famed club, summed it all up in onedescription: "FANTASTIC!"

Only 9 months ago, the REO Brothers arrivedheartbroken in Manila from Typhoon Yolanda'sdevastation of their home province, Tacloban, virtuallypenniless, armed only with their guitars, and the gutsto brave it out in a city that could be merciless to thosewith no talent, but could be lavishly generous to thosewho have! Since getting a break in a new, unknownmusic lounge which led to an ABS-CBN Christmas TVspecial, where they were the only performers accordeda standing ovation, they have captivated audiences inTV programs, corporate events, town fiestas, alumnireunions of major schools, as well as in overseasconcerts in New York, California and Tokyo.

This night, however, was much more special thanall of those shows. The Cavern is where their idols, theBeatles, started their own road to fame. Finally, theREO Brothers have earned the invitation, and theprivilege, of performing on the same historic stage. Noother Philippine band have ever had the honor!

Friday evening, August 1st, was chilly on a Liverpoolsummer night. Matthews St., where the Cavern Club islocated, obviously the favorite destination of locals andtourists, had its usual heavy customer traffic,! Out in thestreet, there was a steady stream of Beatle fans from allover the world - Americans, Australians, Germans amongthem, enjoying every moment savoring "photo-ops," fromthe Club entrance with the familiar "Cavern" signage, aswell as pictures, posters, streamers, and even a Lennonstatue, vying for attention! Inside the Club, you feast youreyes at the historic stage where the Beatles actuallyperformed, after going down a winding staircase, to thebasement several levels below the street. The historicBeatle stage is a rather small, cramped elevated platformin a hall crowded with fans jockeying for space in thelimited area, enjoying cocktails while waiting for theevening's "live" performance.

It is, however, no longer the stage for the nightlyconcerts of the Cavern Beatles, and similar othertribute bands that get the rare opportunity of beingselected to sing their hearts out on the same venue!

Instead, there is now an extended annex in the samebasement, an expanded, separate private "CavernLounge" which can seat possibly about 120-140customers, and a satellite bar which can serve about 50-60 more! For the pleasure of seating in the nightly Beatleconcerts, fans have to pay a separate, hefty entrance feeto be accommodated. This is where the Cavern Beatlesperform nightly; this is where the REO Brothers sharedthe stage on that eventful August 1st evening.

Arriving exhausted at the Cavern late in theafternoon after a long 5 hour drive from London, therewas hardly enough time to do a sound check before theshow, with the Cavern Beatles taking their timefinishing their own, obviously getting the startreatment from the Club. The REO Brothers manageda 15-minute check, much shorter than their usual one-hour allowance, and had to clear the stage because thelong queue outside the Lounge had to already beaccommodated for the standard 830PM gate opening.

At the dressing room shortly before going up thestage for their 9PM set, the brothers held each otherand prayed together, while an SRO crowd anxiouslywaited outside. This is, after all, a performance onecan only dream of when you start strumming a guitar

and humming your first Beatle song! A performancewhich thousands of "wanna be" Beatle tribute bandsall over the world can only sigh of!

After a brief introduction of the band by this writer, thecrowd settled in their seats in anticipation of the openingnumber. Beatle fanatics are probably the harshest criticsof tribute bands; they know Beatle songs by heart, andcan spot mediocre pretenders just from any song'sopening bars. They were there not to listen to a sob storyof the Tacloban disaster and the REO Brothers, but tohave a great night of Beatle music.

They were not disappointed! The reaction wasawesome!

From the opening, high energy number "PleasePlease Me," the crowd showed their appreciation byintently listening and then, clapping enthusiasticallyafter each Beatle favorite, which included "I Want toHold Your Hand," "Help," "Here Comes the Sun,""Come Together," "Two of Us," ""Octopus Garden," " IFeel Fine" and others. The drinking crowd at the bar, which had a little more space to move around, dancedvigorously to the rock and roll beat as they savored theREO Brothers "sound-alike" renditions. At theconclusion of their set with the closing number "All MyLoving," the crowd yelled for more numbers, but thetechnician stuck with his guide sheet that showed only11 songs, and dutifully, turned off the lights.

The Filipino crowd was all beaming with pride afterthe performance, as the audience who had becomeinstant fans were still yelling for encores even after thestage lights had been turned off. At the dressing roomshared with the Cavern Beatles, the house bandcongratulated the boys for a great show, and later on,told the crowd it was a "fantastic" performance.

The Filipinos in the SRO crowd included the UK Tourpromoters, Fil-Connect, with their indefatigable andgracious principals Genesis "Jojo" Sanchez and OliverBautista; long-time London resident and advertisingcolleague Peps Villanueva; Manny de Guzman who flewall the way from San Francisco to watch the REO Brothersperform in the UK tour; Caloy Gigante, Fil-com Liverpoolleader; and Judith Jones, a Primos regular and big fanfrom the Phlippines, together with a lively group of"REOTICS" from Belfast who took an 8-hour boat ride tobe at the Cavern. Dave Lawrence, a British national whohas become a big fan after seeing the boys on "you tube"drove with the Filipino promoters all the way fromLondon!

Special mention must be made of Fil-Connect'sGenesis "Jojo" Sanchez who arranged with Jon Keats ofthe Cavern Club the very first performance of a Beatletribute band from the Philippines. Jon Keats immediatelyapproved of the REO Brothers when he saw the AranetaColiseum ABS-CBN Christmas TV Special performance ofthe REO Brothers from "you tube."

Cavern Club, a historic milestone in the REOBrothers inspiring journey from despair in theaftermath of Typhoon Yolanda, to admiring audiencesin Manila, New York, California, Tokyo and now theCavern in Liverpool, a challenging dream-come-true,matched with the performance of a lifetime!
