Rodman(JamesFranco) is abiochemistdevelopinga cureAlzheimer'sDiseasewho finds ababy chimp in the lab and rais-es it secretly at home. The ape,Caesar (motion-captured AndySerkis), shows remarkable intel-ligence, inherited from a labora-tory chimp used by the drugcompany as test subject.
Rodman develops a new for-mulation that not only curedmemory loss but also accelerat-ed brain development, makingthe test chimps very intelligent -too intelligent, in fact, to makeCaesar understand that humanscan’t compete against an intelli-gent ape. We know what hap-pens next. After all, the chimp’sname is Caesar.
It has an old film vibe—thelighting and design were some-where between the late 1960sand late 90s but technologicallycurrent that gives the film aneerie feel. Credit to director Wy-att who is a relative newcomer
to the business, and the crew, many of whom worked on TheLord of the Rings trilogy.
Best of all it's an old-schoolsci-fi thriller—a tense dramaabout technology and moralsand a bit of humanism thatforebodes the end of humancivilization.
It reminded me of that mas-terful jump cut from the boneto the spaceship in Kubrick's2001: A Space Odyssey. Is thisthe next jump cut? Had theapes been machines, this wouldhave been The Matrix or Termi-nator but with a lot less actionand more emotion.
But all that's subtext suggest-ed only by dialogue that couldhave been written better, or byacting, if only the humans weregiven more layered characteri-zations.
Despite a pedigree of talentled by Franco, RISE is definitelyCaesar's show. Andy Serkis’ mo-tion-captured performance ofthe first intelligent ape is en-thralling, levels deeper than hisGollum in Lord of the Rings. Itsflaws may be human, but theapes are divine.
For those not acquaintedwith the series: Planet of the
Apes was a 1968 movie starringCharlton Heston based on theFrench novel about a group ofastronauts who crash-land on aplanet ruled by intelligent simi-ans ('apes'). At the end of thefilm it is shockingly revealedthat the planet is Earth in thevery distant future.
That film spawned 4 sequels(‘Beneath the,’ ‘Escape from,’'’Conquest of,’ and ‘Battle forthe Planet of the Apes’) and twotelevision series.
Tim Burton ‘re-imagined’ theoriginal in 2001, starring MarkWahlberg, but gave it a differ-ent version of the ending.Where the original suggestedDarwinian evolution, Burton’sversion suggested alternate di-mensional reality. RISE explainsthings genetically, taking thepath of the original.
Granted, it takes some ideasoff of all Planet of the Apes edi-tions, but RISE is an energizingstart to what will predictably bea franchise with fresh ideaswithout throwing away the clas-sic. The rest, along with Charl-ton Heston's famous last linesfrom the original, is film history.
And God said, “Let us createman in our own image.” AndMan said, “We can do better.”
Then Ape said, “No.”

O NCE in a while we humans are reminded whywe don't deserve to be masters of this planet.Rise of the Planet of the Apes will touch your
heart, make you laugh, scare you and maybe makeyou think about a few things—not due to any humanin the movie but by an imp, a chimpanzee whosename spells our doom.
