    The Stupendous

A prologue with Gandalf (IanMcKellen) and Thorin sets up

what happened before thedwarves came knocking on Bil-bo Bagginss (Martin Freeman)door in the first film Unexpected Journey . After this, the actionpicks up and never lets go(most of the time.)

The dwarves meetshapeshifting Beorn (MikaelPersbrandt) who aids them while on the run from Azog(Manu Bennett) and his army of Wargs and Orcs. They then

battle giant spiders in the Dark Forest of Mirkwood, are cap-tured in the woodland realm of King Thranduil (Lee Pace), whois father of Legolas (yes, Orlan-do Bloom is back) who lovesTauriel (Evangeline Lilly) she-elf captain of the guard, whogets jiggy with Kili (Aidan Turn-er), but the dwarves escapefrom the elves dungeons andreach Laketown, where Bard(Luke Evans) helps them toreach the Lonely Mountain.

    Meanwhile, elf queen Gal-

adriel (Cate Blanchett) makes atwo-second appearance to tell

Gandalf to investigate theNecromancer in the fortress of Dol Guldur. Bad idea. Radagast(Sylvester McCoy) runs forhelp.

Story too long? Not really. The movie runs quickly even at161 minutes, never boring.Where the first film establishedcharacters and the motivationsin this tale, the second film isprimarily a plot-based, lets-go-to-Erebor-and-defeat-Smaug ac-

tion-adventure with emphasison slash-decapitate-shoot-killand more kill. Quite violent, butit is PG-rated.

Which brings me to the high-light of this immensity: the bad-dest of dragons ever put onscreen (so far.) Bilbo was hiredas a burglar, to burgle the jewel Arkenstonehidden in theheaps of gold guarded by theterrifying Smaug (voiced thun-derously by geekdoms megastarBenedict Cumberbatch.) So re-alistic, its like Gollums appear-

ance again, especially in HFR 3D. Smaug represents futilitythe unreachable goal, the de- vourer of hope, deathlessbe-

cause he is death himself.I wont understand the inclu-sion of the Legolas-Tauriel-Kililove triangle. I like the look of Laketownits a different sideof Middle-earth populated by regular humans. I kinda miss alittle of the lightness (andsongs) in the book. But I see why the story is darker, if only to raise the stakes for the ulti-mate showdown next year. Andof course, I love Smaug. I lovedragons, good or bad. Or evil.

Truly, The Desolation of Smaug is a stupendous additionto the Middle-earth seriesarealization that will only comeat the end of the film, whichcame with a collective gaspfrom the preview audience.

Oh what the filmmakershave done, indeed.

    Light of hopefor rich, poor

We asked the stars:Why should we cele-brate Christmas this year aft er a str ing of disasters?

    Derek Ramsay We must continue

to be strong. Christ-mas is the season of giving and sharing. Not celebratingChristmas would belike losing faith andhope. Yolanda leftdestruction in its wake, but it alsobrought not just ourcountry, but the whole world together. We should help thesurvivors get back ontheir feet. Helpingthem this Christmas would be a greatstart.

    Dulce Yes, Christmas is

enough reason tocelebrate. It isnot aboutgiving andreceiving mate-rial things. Thebirth of our Savior isthe light of hope thatis available toallrich or poor. It isabout receiving JesusChrist in our hearts sothat we can be savedfrom all earthly limi-tations.

    Gabby Eigenmann

Yes, the family willnot be complete be-cause some of us lost

a dad, a son or adaughter to the earth-quake or typhoon, but we should also bethankful because wesurvived. Lets notlose hope. Filipinos will find a way to cel-ebrate. My Christmas will be different this year. My fellow PPLEntertainment artistsand I have decided to

    build a classroom for

    the kids in Jaen, Iloi-lo.

    Liza DioBecause Christmas

is the season of hope.Thats the one thingthats left with us

allespecially thoseaffected by thecalamities that hap-pened this year. All we have now are thepromise of a new be-ginning, the first steptoward rebuilding, and the convictionthat everybody islooking at the same

    goal.Joey Paras

Christmas this yearis our resurrectionfrom agony andmelancholia. Aftereach storm comes a

ray of sunlight. A sim-ple commemorationof our Lords birth will not hurt anyone.Celebrations, howev-er, may vary in ways.Whats important ishow we spend theseason, not only forourselves but for ournation.

    Lauren YoungWe should cele-

brate Christmas be-cause its the birth of Jesus. But our cele-

    brations dont haveto be extravagant

or expensive. Wehave to be sensi-tive to what hap-pened to ourpeople. Instead

of partying, we cangive back to ourcountry. There areother ways to mark the occasion. It canstill be fun and festiveeven if its simple.

    Carlo GonzalezChristmas, espe-

cially now, symbolizeshope for everyone. If we dont celebrateChristmas, its like were giving up onlife. We should riseafter every fall. Weshould go on with life

and spend Christmas with our loved ones.If you are amongthose affected by thecalamities, you shouldstill celebrate it with whatever you have.Christmas will not beany different for my family this year, ex-cept that weve decid-ed to hand over to YesPinoy Foundationall the loot bags wealways give to streetkids during this sea-son.

Kasi in the past three confer-

    ences, kapagnabu-buena-manohan ng taloang Batang Pier,halos sunod-sun-od na yan.Tapos, magka-roon man ngpanalo ay na-pakadalang.

Never pang nakausad angteam ni Mikee sa susunod nalevel or phase after the elimina-

tions, which is the quarterfinals.Sa pagbubukas ng 39th sea-son, expected ko nang mangun-gulelat uli ang Global Port, dahil sa mga aberyang nangyarisa team just before the opening.

Ang pinaka-major, Mikeefound himself without a head-coach and had to appoint a very raw, inexperienced Ritchie Tic-zon to do the job on an interimbasis, habang naghahanap siyang may track record.

Fivegames into the conference, 3 naang panalo nito (Rain or Shine,

Air 21 at Meral-co) at 2 lamangang talo.

    Without batting an eyelash,

Very detailed and extensiveang preparasyon nila for agame, Mikee said.Sana mag-tuloy-tuloy ang panalo.

Buntong-hininga.
