But one day, Ifound a sim card un-der our bed. I foundseveral messages in it.He called someonehoney, a nickname Ithought he reserved
only for me. The mes-sages were sweet Joe.I knew those messages
were not meant for afriend. I found outthat that girl was theone Alvin was tellingme about, his officemate. I found out thatshe was a neigh-boran unwed moth-er of a young boy.
Theyve been intoit for a year now. He
was telling the othergirl that he had beenforced into marryingme and we were sep-arating soon. Joe, itfelt worse than beinghit physically. I feltlike throwing up.
He has changedand is now a strangerto me. He talked to

Dark ShadowsDirected by Tim BurtonBased on the TV series
NEVER before have I been con-fused whether to like a TimBurton movie or not. The
good news is that Dark Shadows is stillunmistakeably a Tim Burton movie.
The bad news is that youll wonder ifits really a Tim Burton movie.Ever since Edward
Scissorhands (1990), aBurton-Johnny Depptandem was almost al-
ways a guarantee thatthe movie would beunlike anything weveseen before. That aBurton movie has abrand of unique-
nessweirdnessthatcan only emanatefrom the directorstrademark unruly hair.This is the first timeIve seen his work losethat appeal. The
weirdness is there, butthe uniqueness is not.
Based on the hit
by, is the only remark-able scene in terms ofacting. Mrs. Tim Bur-ton, Helena Bonham-Carter, plays Dr. Hoff-man, psychiatrist tothe weird Collinses.
While it seems thatthe production had allthe fun making themovie, especiallyGreen who plays anenchantress in many
senses of the word,theres not enough of
that vibe emanatingfrom the screen. Itfeels like Burton heldback the camp and
the weirdness, result-ing in something thatwas not too funny,but not too dark ei-ther. I thought I was
watching a half-heart-ed cross between Van
Helsing and Pirates ofthe Caribbean.
All is not lost, be-cause the film looksgorgeous. Colleen At-
