“I appeal to our City Councilto immediately place Taguig un-der a state of calamity so we

Monsoon and the starsHow celebs cope with rains, floods and traffic

Like many Filipinos, thesestars were invariably hauntedby memories of the wreckagewrought by Typhoons “Ondoy”and “Sendong.”

When the going got rough, they turned to prayers, TV andFacebook—again, like many ofus, less-famous observers.

LORNA TOLENTINO: I de-cided to stay home—praying, watching the news and keepingin touch with family andfriends.

LIEZL MARTINEZ: On Tues-day, my husband Albert (Mar-tinez) left for taping (for theABS-CBN soap opera “Princessand I”). My screening for theMovie and Television Reviewand Classification Board (ofwhich she is a member) wascanceled so I was just homewith the kids. Alyanna and Al-fonso had no work and Alissahad no classes. We are very

lucky that we live on a hill. Wedon’t have even a puddle in ourgarden.

EUGENE DOMINGO: OnMonday night, I was at the Petabuilding, rehearsing for the play“Bona.” Our director SoxieTopacio decided to let everyonego home because most of thecast members live either in thesouth or in Manila. I managedto get home safely by steeringclear of flooded areas. I havememorized which Quezon Citystreets to avoid when there areheavy rains. On Tuesday, myshoot was canceled.

JON SANTOS: I stayedhome, glued to the TV set forweather and traffic updates. Imade sure that my cell phonewas fully charged because Ineeded to keep checking on mystaff, friends and family wholive in Marikina, Valenzuela andother flood-prone areas.

RITA AVILA: OnMonday night, I at-tended a story confer-ence at the GMA 7 of-fice. Later, I barelyslept because of thesounds of the rain. OnTuesday, I felt gratefulthat my husband and Iwere home safe. I keptpraying for the sun toshine, for the land todry up and for thoseaffected to recoverwhat they have lost.

GISELLESANCHEZ: Mondayand Tuesday, I prayedincessantly for therains to stop. So manyhomes and lives arelost because of mon-soon floods. When On-doy hit Manila inSeptember 2009, myparents’ bungalow inPasig went under wa-ter, while my brotherswere trapped on the

second floor of our neighbor’sapartment. I prayed and prayedit wouldn’t be another Ondoy.

JOHN ARCILLA: On Tuesday,my interview (about “TheBourne Legacy”) with GMA 7’sArnold Clavio was canceled.Right now, the only thing I cando is post entries on my family’sPrayer Request page on Face-book. I called up my motherand siblings who live in Auroraand told them to pray and stayalert. It’s really frightening, es-pecially when we rememberOndoy and Sendong.

SUE PRADO: I was stuck inLa Union. I’m still waiting forthe weather to improve so that Ican go back to surfing.

OGIE ALCASID: On Mondaynight, I was at work, taping(the GMA 7 gag show) BubbleGang. We had to finish early soeveryone could go home totheir loved ones.

MERCEDES CABRAL: OnMonday, I was home… slept allnight. When I woke up the nextday, I was shocked to realizethat most of Metro Manila hadbeen deluged. Fortunately, ourneighborhood in Quezon Citydoesn’t usually get flooded.

HARLENE BAUTISTA: I washome with my husband (Rom-nick Sarmenta) and the kids, re-minding everyone to keep safe.

CARMI MARTIN: I stayedhome, constantly praying forthe rains to stop. I also keptwatching the news and check-ing on friends and family mem-bers, making sure everyone isfine.

RICKY DAVAO: On Monday,we were at the Rizal provincialjail in Taytay for a taping of“Makapiling Ka Muli,” a GMA 7series that I direct. All ourscenes were interior shots, butthere were snags here and therebecause the rain affected thesound recording. The cast andcrew—led by Phillip Salvador,Mark Gil and GloriaRomero—were monitoring thesituation. We were all nervous. We finished at 5 p.m., but ittook us two hours to get home.We had to avoid flooded streetsand find alternative routes.

Everything in Legacy is a re-sult of the fallout from JasonBourne’s disembowelment ofOperation Blackbriar. It’s a gut-sy move from writer-directorTony Gilroy, who damns the au-dience whether or not it re-members the details of Identity,Supremacy and Ultimatum.

Through lots of dialogue,Legacy explains how Jason

Bourne is just the tip of theproverbial iceberg, that Tread-stone was just the beginning ofa series of operations involvingscientifically-enhanced superspy-soldiers. For about an hour,it felt like Gilroy was defendingthe necessity of making a fourthBourne movie.

Legacy picks up from the fi-nal moments of Ultimatum

around the time of PamelaLandy’s (Joan Allen) exposé atthe US Senate. CIA DirectorEzra Kramer (Scott Glenn) acti-vates the team of ex-colonel Er-ic Byer (Edward Norton) to ter-minate assets involved in all se-cret agent programs.

Those assets include Out-come agent Aaron Cross (Jere-my Renner) and many other un-named secret agents across theglobe, as well as the pharma-ceutical facility that developsthe drugs that put agents on achemical leash. With drug sup-plies gone as a result of theshutdown, Cross must get vacci-nated with the virus that coun-ters the leash, but also activatesthe soldier’s superhuman abili-ties. That virus is secretly madein Manila. Outcome scientist Dr.Shearing (Rachel Weisz) helpsCross along the way, as Byer’s

agents chase them. The finale of Legacy is set in

Manila, nearly 40 minutes of it.As producer Patrick Crowley ex-plained at the premiere at thePerforming Arts Theater inNewport, Resorts World, Manilajoins the elite cities featured inthe Bourne series.

Manila actually looks incred-ible here, exuding the complextexture of a true modernmetropolis, at once unique andgenerically Asian, at the sametime generically cosmopolitanbut uniquely Filipino. It’s an al-ternate Manila, with organizedpolice and traffic that stays onits lanes. Watching it is surreal.Your eyes and ears say it’sManila, but your mind says it’smanufactured by Hollywood. Ifanother Aaron Cross film ismade after this, it would neces-sarily have to start back hare inthe Philippines. Or more pre-cisely, Palawan.

Incredibly, Legacy can standon its own by disregarding se-ries—not a superb film, but a

viable new story about secretmilitary experiments and opera-tives. Renner and Weisz human-ize their thinly-profiled charac-ters, while Norton makes dowith just talking ominously tooveremphasize the relevance ofcapturing Aaron Cross.

However, Legacy’s biggestburden is its association withBourne. Everything is aboutBourne. It’s impossible not tocompare Aaron with Jason, justas it’s impossible not to com-pare the action, which becamesignatures of the series. Wherethe docu-style of Bourne trans-ports audiences into the thick ofthings, Legacy’s fluid camerasanitizes the views. Where theBourne edit keeps the audiencesguessing, Legacy exposes every-thing. And because the directoris the writer, this film loves totalk too much, quite unlike Ja-son who works silently with afew words.

Legacy is a Bourne moviethat’s not a Bourne movie. InTagalog: anak sa labas.

Tears for Fears: Returnsto Manila to bring cheerBy Pocholo ConcepcionInquirer Entertainment

T HE FIRST time the British bandTears for Fears performed livein Manila two years ago, the

screams from its Filipino fans were soloud the group’s core members,Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, werevisibly overwhelmed.

The band is again in the country, arriving onWednesday for a series of shows startingtonight and tomorrow at the Smart AranetaColiseum, and on Sunday at the Waterfront Ce-bu Hotel.

The return engagement comes at a timewhen residents of Metro Manila and surround-ing areas, as well as provinces to the north, arestruggling to rise amid the death and destruc-tion wrought by more than a week of incessantmonsoon rains and monstrous floods.

The band’s cofounder, bassist and vocalistCurt Smith, posted this message on his Twitteraccount: “Much love to all my Filipino friendsdealing with the devastating weather andfloods. We will attempt to bring some goodcheer with us!”

PRIMAL THERAPYFormed in 1981 by Smith and his teenage

buddy Roland Orzabal, Tears for Fears was in-fluenced by synthesizer pop and New Wavemusic, and initially inspired by the concept ofprimal therapy as a way of dealing with emo-

tional distress and trauma. All the songs contained in the band’s 1983

debut album, “The Hurting,” were said to havereferences to “primal scream” therapy—theneed to confront or “shout out” one’s neurosisand hang-ups in order to get over them. Thiswas particularly evident in tracks like “MadWorld,” “Change” and “Pale Shelter.”

SHOUTTwo years later, Tears for Fears gained

worldwide fame with its second album, “Songsfrom the Big Chair,” whose songs includedcommentaries on politics (“Shout”) and lust forpower (“Everybody Wants to Rule the World”),among other themes.

At the time, the Philippines was experienc-ing turmoil following the assassination of op-position leader Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” AquinoJr., the father of current President Aquino, andthe songs of Tears for Fears resonated amongthe Filipino youth.

SEEDS OF LOVENot long after the release of the band’s third

album, “The Seeds of Love,” Orzabal andSmith had a falling out. Smith left the band al-though Orzabal carried on with new bandmates and still used the name Tears for Fears.

Tickets to the Aug. 10 show at the BigDome have reportedly been sold out, which ledpromoter Renen de Guia of Ovation Produc-tions to add the Aug. 11 date. A sidelight tothe concert is the special appearance of PerSorensen, former lead singer of the defunctNorwegian group Fra Lippo Lippi.
