2016 SUMMER SESSIONSPRE-K PROGRAMS (Birth to 5)

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS(Ages 6 months to 3 years)

Our parent/child swim lessons promote water enrichment andaquatic-readiness activities for children and their parents or other trustedadults. In this program, the developmental experiences of each child areused to build the child's self-confidence in and out of the water. Parentslearn from the instructor's example how to guide their children throughpositive reinforcement and appropriate praise.

There are four levels based on developmental abilities:

• Shrimp (6-8 months) Child can control their head and sit with supportfrom the hands.

• Kipper (9-12 months) Child can sit without hand support and stand withsupport from the hands.

• Inia (13-18 months) Child can stand without support and walk with orwithout support or aid.

• Perch (19-36 months) Child can run and jump.

Instructors are certified in the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Program.

WHERE CHILDREN LEARN,GROW AND THRIVE.At the Y, we regard each child as a uniqueindividual who needs to be understood, guided,encouraged and appreciated. At this early age,play is a child’s most important form of learningand development. They are also taught general aquatic safety andpool games. Children will be taught with and without the use of variousinstructional flotation devices (IFDs). Classes maybe combined based onenrollment. Is your child just not ready to be alone for swim lessons? This isa transitional class where we wean your child away from Mom and Dad. Yourchild must be at least 3 years old at the start of the session. The next levelfrom here would be Pike.

YOUTH SPORTS & FITNESSThe Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming activeand developing healthy habits they will continue throughout their lives.In a Y sports program, your child will meet friends, learn new skills, improvehis or her fitness and most importantly have fun! Whether it's gaining theconfidence that comes with learning a new sport, building the positiverelationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, or refiningand improving skills, participating in sports at the Y is about building thewhole athlete, inside and out.

Rhythm & Motion Rhythm & Motion is a dance class with a fusionof different genres. Students will work together and learn steps andmovements that will build up to a choreographed routine.

Youth Cycling Kids need cardio, too! What better way than to introduceyour child or teen to fitness. Youth will learn the fundamentals of cyclingtechniques along with a fun and challenging cycling program.

Teen Soccer Teen Soccer is for players of all skills and abilities.Coaches will run players through drills and scrimmages. Players mustprovide their own shoes and shin guards. The Y will provide nets and balls.Soccer will be held outside, weather permitting. Wednesday 7-8 p.m. andSaturday 10-11 a.m.

Youth Soccer Our soccer program is held outside, weather permitting.This program is for players of all skill levels. All participants will be learning,practicing and improving their soccer skills in dribbling, passing, trappingand shooting. Skills will be put to good use in scrimmages against oneanother. Players will need to purchase shin guards and shoes. Practice ballsand nets will be supplied. Wednesday 6-7 p.m. and Saturday 9-10 a.m.

Karate Beginner Learn the discipline and skills of karate. Some physicalcontact is involved. Students are required to purchase and wear dojos toclass. Students who pass belt levels may qualify to compete in tournaments.

Karate Intermediate & Advanced In the intermediate and advanced karateclass, students will participate in sparring and physical contact. Studentswill have the opportunity to compete in tournaments depending on theirlevels. Students must purchase their own dojos.

First Tee First Tee DRIVE is a rewarding, inspiring program gearedtoward 6-to-12-year-olds and taught by trained golf instructors.The World Golf Foundation established this curriculum-based program in1997 to teach children the basics of golf as a one-man sport and a teamactivity. Through 18 unique activity plans, children will learn the four basicgolf shots and the core values of the program. Classes are held outdoorswhen weather permits.

YOUTH SWIM LESSONSLearn to Swim at the Y. Since 1885, the YMCA has been a pioneer inswimming education. Literally millions of people have learned to swimthrough the Y's perfected program. In Y swim lessons, participants learnand practice new swimming skills and feel a sense of achievement frommastering something new that they can enjoy the rest of their lives.

Level 1: Polliwog This is the beginning level for school age children and isappropriate for anyone new to the water or with little formal instruction.Children will learn kicking skills, the basic paddle stroke on their front, backand sides, and will become comfortable putting their face in the water.

Level 2: Guppy In the Guppy class, swimmers will learn to front andback float for 1 minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmicbreathing, with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards;back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; sidealternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive. Prerequisites: To enter thislevel, children should be able to front and back float for 30 seconds with orwithout an IFD; paddle 25 yards on their front, back and side with an IFDand 15 feet without an IFD; jump in without assistance; and be comfortablein deep water.

Level 3: Minnow In the Minnow class, swimmers will learn to do a standingdive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basicsidestroke 25 yards; and tread water for 1 minute. Prerequisites: To enterthis level, children should be able to front and back float for 1 minute; frontalternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmic breathing, with and without anIFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back symmetrical paddle 25 yards;back alternating paddle 25 yards; side alternating paddle 25 yards; andkneeling dive.

Level 4: Fish In the Fish class, swimmers will learn to tread water for 3minutes; swim 50 yards front crawl; swim 50 yards breaststroke with legalkick and arm pulls; swim 50 yards backstroke; swim 50 yards elementarybackstroke with a glide; swim 50 yards sidestroke with a scissor kick; andswim 15 yards butterfly. Prerequisites: To enter this level, children shouldbe able to do a standing dive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards;basic breaststroke 25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke25 yards; basic sidestroke 25 yards; and tread water for 1 minute.

All of our swim lessons follow the Y of the USA guidelines for swim lessonsand focus on five main points: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development,

water sports games and rescue. Classes maybe combined based on enrollment.

Level 6: Shark In the Shark class, swimmers will learn to take their ownheart rate; learn about open water and backyard pool safety; swim 100yards from crawl with flip turns; swim 100 yards breaststroke withpull-out; swim 50 yards inverted breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstrokewith dolphin kick and pullout; swim 50 yards over-arm sidestroke; swim25 yards butterfly with streamline; and swim 200 yards individual medley.Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to do a flipturn; swim 100 yards front crawl with bilateral breathing; swim 100 yardsbreaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke; swim 100 yards elementarybackstroke; swim 100 yards sidestroke alternating sides; swim 100 yardslifesaving sidestroke; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Level 7: Porpoise Swim Club The Porpoise level differs from other levels inthat the format allows older children and teens the opportunity to developa program that fits their interests after they complete the Shark Level.Participants will expand upon the five main points of YMCA swim lessonswhile they learn leadership skills and the value of community service.This is a 10-week session.

YMCA ACHIEVERSFor more than 40 years, the Achievers program has served as theYMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s signature college readiness and careerexploration program. Founded in 1971 at the Harlem YMCA in New YorkCity, this nationwide program fosters the academic, personal and careerdevelopment of minority, underserved and first-generation,college-bound students in grades 7-12.

Program goals:

· Introduce youth to diverse college and career options

· Remove barriers to college access

· Help youth develop a positive sense of self and build character

· Raise the academic standards of youth

· Provide role models whose success and knowledge inspire youth toset and reach their goals.

The Achievers program operates through a cohort model ofteenage youth at public schools and YMCA membership centers.Achievers use the evidence-based 6to16 curriculum developed by theUniversity of Chicago’s Urban Education Institute to assist youth withthe complex college-going process and ensure that they succeed inand graduate from college.

Participants are guided through the 6to16 curriculum throughoutthe school year and participate in monthly engagement opportunitiessuch as college tours, career workshops, job shadowing, serviceprojects, FAFSA workshops and leadership development opportunities.In the summer, youth are connected with internships or other forms ofsummer employment to further build their career experience.

Kettlebells Get ready to use kettlebells to challenge your core inunconventional ways, making your core stronger and more functional whiledelivering remarkable results. This class is suitable for all fitness levels andno experience is necessary. Kettlebell class consists of a full-body warm-upand progresses into learning the fundamentals of kettlebell training.
