LEARN TO SWIM AT THE Y!For many, the YMCA was where one learned how to swim as a child and for good reason. Since 1885, the Y has been a pioneer in swimming education. Literally millions of people have learned to swim through the YMCA's perfected program. In Y Swim Lessons participants learn and practice new swimming skills and feel a sense of achievement from mastering something new that they can enjoy the rest of their lives.

2015 SUMMER SESSION

Swim lessons are guided through Y of the USA's Swim Lesson Program for Preschool. Generally, swimmers are without parents and learn the basics of stroke mechanics, personal growth, personal safety, rescue, and water sports and games. At this age, participants are still growing and learning how to manipulate their bodies in a new medium. It is not unusual for swimmers to repeat levels multiple times. Classes may be combined, based on enrollment.

Level 1: Pike The first level of lessons is for beginner swimmers. Swimmers should be able to listen to instructions and follow directions. Swimmers will learn the basic paddle stroke on the front, back and sides. They will also be taught kicking skills and putting their face in the water.

Swimmers cannot "pass" starfish until they turned 6 years of age.

5 or 10 Private Swim Lessons Student to instructor ratio is 1:1. Skills learned are based upon the progressive swim lesson program. Classes are 30 minutes. Participants may register for this class more than once.

5 or 10 Semi-Private Swim Lessons Student to Instructor ratio is 2 or 3:1. Participants must find their own partner for semi-private lessons. Students swim levels must be similar to each other. The YMCA does not match swimmers. Skills taught follow the learn to swim program. Classes are 30 minutes. Participants may register for this class multiple times.

DID YOU KNOW THE Y INVENTED BASKETBALL, RACQUETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL?Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, invented the game of basketball in 1891 while working at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts.

In 1950, YMCA volunteer Joe Sobek invented racquetball in Greenwich, Connecticut, as an alternative to squash and handball. Like previous YMCA inventors, Sobek was not paid for his invention; he bestowed it as a gift to all who play the game today.

In the 1890s, YMCA instructor William Morgan thought basketball was too strenuous for businessmen, so he blended elements of basketball, tennis and handball, and called his invention “mintonette.” In 1896, at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, the name “volley ball” was first used to describe the back-and-forth manner in which the ball flew over the net. Today, more than 46 million Americans play volleyball.

THE Y. SO MUCH MORE™ At the Y we are more than a gym. We are a cause dedicated to building strong children, families and communities—inside and out. This includes making our programs available to all regardless of need—because at the Y, everyone belongs. You can help us in the cause. Change a life by making a gift to the YMCA. Because membership dues and program fees support our daily operations, your gift will go directly to serving children and families in need. The impact of your gift will be felt when:

• A kindergartener starts school ready to learn because he attended the Y’s early learning center.

• Kids have a safe, nurturing environment to go to after school and in the summer.

• A dad spends time with his child while coaching basketball.

• A child loses weight–and enjoys it–because at the Y, exercise is play.

MAKE A GIFT. CHANGE A LIFE. Make your gift today at donate.ymcachicago.org.

PRESCHOOL AT THE Y – WHERE CHILDREN LEARN, GROW AND THRIVE.At the Sage YMCA, we regard each child as a unique individual who needs to be understood, guided, encouraged and appreciated. Our programs provide activities where children learn, explore, build a positive self image and develop strong social and emotional relationships with other children.

In our 2 and 3 year old class, children develop social skills, confidence and most importantly, a love of learning.

Our 3 to 5 year old 3 day a week classes are focused on preparing your preschooler for kindergarten. Within our study schedule, which emphasizes science and social studies, your child will work on necessary skills required by school districts. These include literacy (reading, receptive and expressive language and literature), math, fine and gross motor and social/emotional development.

Our 4 to 5 year old 4 day a week class is also focused on preparing your preschooler for kindergarten, with an extra day to extend learning and devote more time to academic skills.

The Sage YMCA is proud to utilize the Creative Curriculum, which is fully aligned with the early learning standards for every state. Our preschool program includes gym and weekly swim lessons!

Family members eat at different times. Computers, texting and television keep us isolated even in the hours that we’re together. Sound familiar? Well, fret not. Sage YMCA has great ideas to get your family off the couch and spending quality time with each other. Join us the 4th Friday of each month for family activities you can all enjoy together.
