THE Y. SO MUCH MORE™ At the Y we are more than a gym. We are a cause dedicated to building strong children, families and communities—inside and out. This includes making our programs available to all regardless of need—because at the Y, everyone belongs. You can help us in the cause. Change a life by making a gift to the YMCA. Because membership dues and program fees support our daily operations, your gift will go directly to serving children and families in need. The impact of your gift will be felt when:• A kindergartener starts school ready to learn because he attended the

Y’s early learning center.• Kids have a safe, nurturing environment to go to after school and in

the summer.• A dad spends time with his child while coaching basketball.• A child loses weight–and enjoys it–because at the Y, exercise is play.

MAKE A GIFT. CHANGE A LIFE. Make your gift today at donate.ymcachicago.org.

DID YOU KNOW THE Y INVENTED BASKETBALL, RACQUETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL?Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, invented the game of basketball in 1891 while working at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts.

In 1950, YMCA volunteer Joe Sobek invented racquetball in Greenwich, Connecticut, as an alternative to squash and handball. Like previous YMCA inventors, Sobek was not paid for his invention; he bestowed it as a gift to all who play the game today.

In the 1890s, YMCA instructor William Morgan thought basketball was too strenuous for businessmen, so he blended elements of basketball, tennis and handball, and called his invention “mintonette.” In 1896, at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, the name “volley ball” was first used to describe the back-and-forth manner in which the ball flew over the net. Today, more than 46 million Americans play volleyball.

Water Polo Club Played with two nets and a ball, water polo is the oldest Olympic sport! The class will teach the skills, rules, and techniques of water polo. Water polo is a great way to stay fit while having fun in the water. Participants must be Guppy level or higher.

HRY Summer Swim Team Our swim team practices Tuesday-Saturday and is divided up based on age group. Swimmers compete against other YMCA teams in the Chicagoland area. For try outs contact Amy Goodwin, Head Swim Coach, at [email protected].

Synchronized Swimming Synchronized swimming challenges the creativity of swimmers by combining the movements of dance with swimming skills. Students work to improve stroke, form and endurance while gaining confidence and poise. Swimmers may participate in performances and competitions. Prerequisite: Fish level or above.
