3. Details of Chapter activities since last report

1) Recruit new members

We recruited new members in various ways. We advertised and

introduced SPIE Student Club through the network and some posters;

Many student joined our club for the various activities and conferences

held by SPIE. This year we also have quite a few members, which

proves that our chapter has certain effect on operating the club and

many students want to join us to get to know the SPIE club and its

conferences.

2) Held a dinner party to welcome the new members

We gave the new members of our chapter a warm welcome by holding

a dinner party. During the dinner party, Professor Leng, the advisor of

our chapter, recommended our chapter to the new members with a sense

of humor. All students showed great interest. Then the new members

were asked to introduce themselves to each other and the old members

shared their experience afterwards. Everyone enjoyed their times.

During the discussion, they were pleased to provide advices about the

future activities planning and the management of the chapter. At last,

the new officers are elected, and president Han gave us a short

conclusion.

3) Made new member cards

We have made the name cards for the new members.

4) Attended the SPIE conference

The president of our chapter Dongjia Han attended the SPIE Student

Chapter Leadership Workshop and the Optics & Photonics conference

2014 in San Diego, USA. She brought us new thoughts and ideas on the

management of the chapter from the international conference, and built

new relationships with other chapters, such as Zhejiang university

chapter of China and Australian National Univ. Chapter.

5) Outdoor activities

In order to build a harmonic and relaxed atmosphere , we took a tour of

Happy Valley, which is one of the best theme parks in China. We had

joy in the Spanish Square, and were screaming in adventure Mountain.

When taking the plummeting freefall , everyone was shouting and

applausing. All the members of our chapter had a good time and knew

each other better. Meanwhile, we discussed the development of SPIE

Student Club, everyone felt that our chapter is like a big family and

loved the group. It is good for the expansion of our chapter.

6) Organized lectures

We invited some famous scientists to give a lecture in our institute. At

the beginning of March this year, the president of our chapter invited an

engineer from National Instruments to give us an introduction about the

commercial software Labview.

7) Volunteers on the 2014 National Science day

Page 7: SPIE Student Chapter Report 2014 Annual report · SPIE Student Chapter Report 2014 Annual report SPIE Student Club Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics October 9, ... 24

On the third week of September, knows as the National Science week,

We welcomed primary students from Qinghe Road Elementary School.

Our volunteers showed them the State Key Laboratory of High Laser

Physics, and told them several principles of physics and optics.

Although they may not understand, we hope this kind of activity can

help to build their interest in optics.

8) Organized a lecture to our institute with other organization

We had organized a lecture named Filamentation into the Future

on December 20th, 2014. The reporter was Prof. Dr. See Leang Chin

from Laval University, Canada. Prof. S.L. Chin’s expertise covers on

ultrafast intense laser propagation and filamentation, femtosecond laser

induced fluorescence, intense laser ionization, dissociation, atoms and

molecules, ultrafast laser material processing. Lots of SPIE members

attended the lecture, and we felt it interesting and impressive.
