Activity Report 2013-2014
CITEDI-IPN SPIE Student Chapter
CITEDI-IPN SPIE Student Chapter
CITEDI-IPN Student Chapter was established last year, in 8 February 2013 bystudents of the Master and PhD of Science in Digital Systems at Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de Tecnología Digital (CITEDI-IPN), Tijuana, Mexico.
Objectives
The main objective of CITEDI-IPN Student Chapter is to promote optics and image processing inside and outside of the center. We are also interested in the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts in the areas of optics, digital image processing, and related applications, which greatly contribute in the development of our research work.
We think that we can contribute to increase the science and technology community in Latin-America, giving simple efforts to foster optics activities and motivate young people to become more interested and STEM activities, exploring fun applications with optics, photonics, and digital image processing.
About CITEDI
CITEDI, Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de Tecnología Digital, is a research and development center of digital technology located in Tijuana, Baja California, a border city between Mexico and the USA.
CITEDI is part of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), one of the largest institutions of the country. The purpose of our institution is to develop, promote and transfer basic and applied research to develop high-level technologies in the area of electronics and computing, and to train human resources with graduate programs of excellence.

ACTIVITIES
2013-2014
SPIE Optics + Photonics
Leadership Workshop
We attended to the SPIE Optics + Photonics Leadership Workshop in August 2013, San
Diego, CA. This was the first time that our chapter to collaborate with others chapters. This
was a great opportunity to increase our performance to manage our chapters activities.
Activity: SPIE Optics+Photonics, San Diego
SPIE Student Chapter Officer Grant y SPIE Optics + Photonics Leadership Workshop, Ago, 2013
We had the opportunity to meet wonderful people from all over the world. We learned how
to manage our chapter and how to be productive in different areas of our carrers. Although
promote optics was the main objective, we could discuss with people about several issues
and real experiences to achieve it.
Poster Presentation SPIE Optics+Photonics
The first poster presentation of our student chapter was presented for some of the
memebers in different days during the SPIE Optics +Photonics 2013.
Activity: SPIE Optics+Photonics, San Diego
Oral presentation was developed from some of our student chapter members.
The topics of the presentations were pattern recognition, optical correlation
filtering, and computer vision with graphics processors.
Activity: CiComp 2013
Oral presentation was
developed at CiComp 2013, in
Ensenada, Baja California,
Mexico.
The presentation was about
pattern recognition under
changing illumination conditions
with graphics processors.
Actitivity: “Descubre tu Posgrado en CITEDI”
In this activity, we promoted our research activities to undergraduate students in order to motivate
them to continue their science and engineering career. In this context our chapter presented the
main results in pattern recognition, optic correlation filtering applications, and computer vision.
Activity: UTT Mecatrónica
In this activity, we present our project results related to optical correlation filtering,
computer vision, and pattern recognition, at the1st Mechatronics Colloquium, Universidad
Tecnológica de Tijuana, April, 2013,
Promotion of Optics in UABC Tijuana
Our Advisor, Professor Víctor Hugo Díaz
Ramírez presenting at the annual seminar
of science graduate programs at the
Autonomus University of Baja California
(UABC), Tijuana Campus.
Kids visiting CITEDI
In this activity, we promote science and
technonology focused on optics basis, image
and signal processing applications, in order to
motivate elementary school kids into STEM
education.
The talks were presented by some chapter
members, and at the same time we showed to
the kids several fun experiments, trying to get
their attention. Optics was emphasized in this
outreach activity.
Activity: ERA 2014
The Regional Academic Encounter (ERA 2014) was presented in April 9–11th
at Tijuana, Mexico.
The main topics of this scientific and academic congress were mainly focused
on digital systems. Four of keynote presenters were for areas of study related
to digital image processing, image retrieval, computer vision, and optical
correlation filtering.
Financial Information
The cost for attending to SPIE Optics+Photonics was covered with the Officer
Travel Grant for conference pass, lodging, and transportation.
Other activities presented were provided by SIP-20131209 project and
institutional funding.
Future Work
Our main activities 2014-2015 are listed below:
SPIE Optics+Photonics Leadership Workshop.
SPIE Optics+Photonics oral and poster presentation.
