OSKAR ANNUAL REPORT SPIE Student Chapter Annual Report CHAPTER ORGANIZATION There are five officers steering the organization:

• President — Patrik Rath

• Vice President —Radwanul Hasan Siddique

• Treasurer — Philipp Brenner

• Secretary — Anirudhan Chandrasekaran

• Public Relations — Johannes Konrad

• Faculty Advisor SPIE – Prof. Dr. Uli Lemmer

There are two kinds of membership: Student member and Society member. Everybody can become a Student member and get access to the minutes of past meeting and our collection of exam protocols from some KIT lectures. Being a Society member means that student has to be either a member of OSA or SPIE and that he/she has affiliated his/her membership with our student chapter. Society members get additional benefits: they can take part for free or with a discount on our activities, have the right to vote during elections and also can be elected. They can be an OSKar representative in one of the international conferences of OSA and SPIE and much more. An OSA student membership is $40 USD per year, an SPIE student membership $20 USD. It pays off, if the member visits only a few OSKar events. OSKar officially accepted as SPIE chapter – 7th May 2012

ACTIVITIES Stammtisch Our group, apart from the official meetings, holds a Stammtisch as an important social event to chat and discuss in a relaxed atmosphere, commonly accompanied by a drink or a nice meal. The Stammtisch takes place regularly usually on the first week of the month.2

Excursion to Leica – 10th July 2013 OSKar, along with support from KSOP, organized a visit to the German lens manufacturing giant, LEICA on 10th July 2013. Leica’s factory at Solms is one of its biggest lens manufacturing units with capabilities to produce the complex lens units for its M9 series cameras. About 20 students from KSOP had the opportunity to witness the whole lens manufacturing process starting from the grinding of lenses until their final assembly into cameras.

Attending SPIE Student Leadership Conference – 24th August 2013 Our former president Soumya Sunder Dash attended the SPIE student leadership conference at San-Diego, California on 24th of August, 2013. He was amazed by the whole SPIE Optics & Photonics conference. There he had a chance to interact with popular lecturer Jean-luc Doumont, who facilitated the leadership workshop.

Attending OSA Student Leadership Conference – 6th October 2013 Our current vice-president Radwanul Hasan Siddique attended the OSA student leadership conference at Orlando, Florida on 6th of October, 2013 and presented OSKar activities there. He also participated in the optics outreach activities and showed some phenomena of optics in nature.

Excursion to Helmholtz Institute of Microstructure Technology– 22nd October 2013 OSKar organized an excursion to one of the Helmholtz Institutes in Karlsruhe, IMT for the new KSOP intake of 2013 in October 22nd, 2013. Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT) is to accomplish research and development in the fields of microstructure and microsystems technology as well as bordering nanotechnology and sciences in general. More than 25 students participated in this excursion and experienced the latest development in the field of nano and microstructure technology. PhD students showed around the large variety of manufacturing processes, test methods, and state-of-the-art equipment for lithographic structuring (electron beam lithography, deep X-ray lithography, and UV lithography) and replication methods (hot embossing, thermoforming, and nanoimprint). Students were fascinated with the large and exotic cleanroom facilities. The excursion was finished with drinks and pretzel.

1st OSKar Poster Competition – 5–6th November 2013 During the Karlsruhe Days of Optics and Photonics on 5th and 6th of November, OSKar awarded five KSOP Ph.D. students for presenting impressive posters. The poster’s accessibility and the oral presentation of the Ph.D. students were rated by a panel of Master students. OSKar congratulates Robert Schittny, Andreas Merz, Michael Bachmann, Aleksandar Nesic and Felix Nickel as the winners in their KSOP research area. We would like to thank the Optical Society for supporting this event.

OSA Travelling Lecturer Program – November 2013 OSKar invited Prof. Dr. Mo Li, from the College of Optical sciences, University of Arizona, to give a talk on ‘Photonic devices in motion’ on 12th November, 2012. OSKar also made the arrangements for a Pizza Nite after the talk to facilitate the after lecture discussion. More than 50 interested students participated in the talk followed by the Pizza Nite.

Visit to Christmas Market – 5th December 2013 Like last year, OSKar members planned to meet at the evening to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere near Marktplatz, Karlsruhe. It was a great relaxation time before the Christmas break to enjoy and talk about Optics over some “Glühwein”. After the social meeting at the Market Platz, members joined the Christmas party organized by the master student of KSOP (Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics), a graduate school of KIT. To motivate the new students to join either SPIE/OSA, OSKar paid the drinks of the Society members.

Lasertag with jDPG Karlsruhe – 14th January 2014 On 14th of January, OSKar organized a first joint event with the jDPG in Karlsruhe. We met at the Laser Base in Karlsruhe to look at a funny side of optics, shooting around laser beams while playing the modern version of paint ball.

We thank the jDPG for taking part in this event and we look forward to further collaboration for scientific and social events in the future.

KSOP MSc Open day – 27th March 2014 OSKar arranged an information booth and gave a talk on the activities of the OSKar to promote optics and photonics to the undergraduate level students in the event of KSOP MSc open day. It was mainly a promotional activity to spread the knowledge of optics and photonics to the young generation.

Internship Icebreaker – 15th April 2014 On 15th April the Internship Icebreaker of 2014 took place. Internship Icebreaker is a contact fair designed to bring students from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) together with Industry in order to discuss new and exciting internship opportunities.

OSKar welcomed Schott and Precitec as participating companies and between 9 am to 4 pm many students came to the International Department in order to learn about career possibilities and technologies of both companies. Furthermore Mr. Daniel Born from the Employment Agency Karlsruhe gave a talk on “Working in Germany”, giving tips and hints to our international members and interested students, about how to start a career in Germany.

Talk and Barbecue with Prof. Rockstuhl – 28th May 2014 OSKar invited Prof. Rockstuhl (http://www.tfp.kit.edu/rockstuhl.php) to give a talk on his research about computational approaches for studying how to control the properties of light by means of micro- and nanostructured materials. Afterwards we arranged a barbecue, where members asked more questions while enjoying a steak, salad and Drinks and also talked to fellow OSKar members and friends.

Participating DGaO conference in Karlsruhe – 10-14th June 2014 Optics Students Karlsruhe e.V. (OSKar) participated along with KSOP in the annual meeting of DGaO (short form of German Society for Applied optics/Deutsche Gesellschaft für angewandte Optik) in Karlsruhe from 10-14 June, 2014. The following major issues were the focus of the conference: 1. Micro-and nano-photonics 2. Biophotonics and Optofluidics 3. Terahertz and infrared photonics 4. Optical Metrology 5. Image and signal processing 6. System design in optics and photonics More than 50 companies related to optics and photonics from Germany were presenting there. It was a great opportunity to meet and greet different optics companies and researchers and professors as well from whole over the Germany.

Excursion to Polytec – 3rd July 2014 OSKar, along with KSOP, arranged an industry visit to Polytec (Waldbronn) on 3rd July 2014 (Thursday). Polytec is among the world's largest providers of laser-based optical vibration measurement technology and optical measurement systems (Laservibrometer, Velocimeter...). OSKar members got an insight into their products, the product development and career chances.

Participating IONS-15 at Ankara, Turkey – 2-5th July 2014 Optics Students Karlsruhe e.V. (OSKar) Vice-President Radwanul Siddique on behalf of OSKar participated in the IONS-15 conference. We presented our activities related to our student chapter and met other student chapter representatives and young scientists as well all over the world.
