1. Introduction to the UTM SPIE Student Chapter

The Student Chapter at the Technological University of the Mixteca, was established

on the 5th of May, 2014, as a student club for both graduate and undergraduate

students. UTM SPIE Student Chapter is a student chapter of the International

Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE). We celebrated our first anniversary this

year as an SPIE Student Chapter. Below the mission that identifies our chapter

“The UTM SPIE Student Chapter aims to arouse interest in optics and sciences

among the student community of our university, to disseminate scientific activities in

our state, to encourage the study of optics and sciences in the general population

and to improve the academic life of the student members.”

To fulfill this mission, we have divided our activities into three groups: academic

activities, social activities and outreach. In each of them we performed various

events to meet the goals set at the beginning of the year. These three areas of focus

will also guide the outline of this report.

1. Academic activities: in this section we will talk about conferences that have

been offered to the students in order to increase their scientific knowledge.

2. Social activities: social activities list the events and meetings that we have

had as a student chapter, the official presentation of the new Student Chapter

Officers, pizza nights and meetings with snacks.

3. Outreach: These activities are the most important for the Student Chapter,

because we focus on working with underprivileged children, we travel to

marginalized and remote communities of the state carrying a series of events

for children to learn about sciences so they could be interested in the study of

physical phenomena that occur around.

The report will list the officers for the 2014-2015 Academic year, it also gives the

roster of members. A financial summary of the year is given. Finally, conclusions

are presented.

3. Academics activities

3.1. First National Week of Physical Engineering

This was the official presentation of the Student Chapter in our University as an

outreach club. We had the opportunity to present a series of science experiments to

about 500 high school and middle school students. Also, some of the student

members were able to help with the logistic of the overall event.

3.2. Conference given by Vanesa Valadez Durán. Student Chapter

Officer from the Center for Research in Optics (CIO), Guanajuato.

Miss Vanesa could talk us about her work as a PhD student from one of the most

important research centers for optics in Mexico. She also shared with us their

experiences as one of the firsts Student Chapters ever stablished in the country. The

things we learnt we could easily applied to our Chapter dynamics.

4. Social activities

As a student group we had the opportunity to gather us together and socialize in

several occasions. We have had pizza nights and meetings with snacks.

5. Outreach

5.1. Children's Day, Acatlima 2014.

We celebrated children’s day in the town of Acatlima by presenting physics

experiments and interactive activities to the children of the community. We

motivated children’s participation with some presents related with science. It was a

joint participation by coordinating the activity with the group ENACTUS from our

University. We had the participation from about 150 children.

5.2. University Christmas Parade, 2014.

As a part of the tradition, every year we have a Christmas parade from our

University to downtown; for this occasion student chapter members participated by

making and launching to the sky cantoya’s balloons in the middle of the parade.

5.3. Children's Day, Huajuapan de León 2015.

Once more, our Student Chapter had a joint participation with the Institute of

Physics and Mathematics from our University in the celebration of Children’s day in

the city of Huajuapan de Leon. Optics and physics experiments were presented to

approximately 700 children.

5.4. Demonstration of experiments in Acatlima, San Pedro Yodoyuxi,

Santos Reyes Yucuná, Ahuehutitlán de González, Cuititó y

Huajolotitlan, Huajuapan de Léon, Oaxaca,

Our Student Chapter have prepared a special brigade in a joint coordination with the

ENACTUS group from our University. It mainly consists in to bring science to far

communities of the city of Huajuapan de Leon. We have brought science

experiments demonstrations and several interactive workshops. The duration of the

brigade was two weeks long. The average attendance per community was about 50

children for a total of approximately 300 children for the entire event.

7. Conclusion

This year the Student Chapter has focused its activities specifically to the academic

growth of its members by providing useful tools; also we are working in the creation

of a network for professional development and adding experience as young

researchers.

We are motivated to continue working in the name of science, especially in the areas

of optics and photonics mainly because several regions in our state are places where

it is very difficult to have access to the message we bear.
