PASTORAL REFLECTIONS / REFLEXIONES PASTORALES

A Blessed Epiphany to All! Who caught the news that occurred just under two weeks ago, on the Monday evening before Christmas? The planets Jupiter and Saturn, given Earth’s relative location, appeared in the night sky to converge into a single bright light. The last time these two passed this close to each other was just un-der 800 years ago, in 1226. Some speculate that the Star of Bethlehem, the star that the three Magi observed and followed, was either this same astronomical event or one very similar. Imagine looking up at the sky two weeks ago, and seeing the exact same thing that led kings from the East (mystics, scientists, and philosophers) to discover a hope foretold generations, centuries ago. And now I am just speculat-ing here, but did Isaiah see the same event in his day? He says this in our first reading: “Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory.” Did he see the bright light in the sky and, through the Holy Spirit, knew the deep-est truths of God’s providence and workings to bring salvation to the world? 2020 felt like “darkness covered the earth, and thick clouds covering the peoples,” and yet this same “star” has appeared in our day. When hope seems out of reach, here comes a rare, never-before-seen event in anyone’s lifetime, to announce that God has it pre-ordained beyond our vision or our imagination. There is always hope, there are always things at work that we cannot see. The Magi’s held a deep reverence for the glory of the Lord reflected in cosmic mys-tery and grandeur, and found themselves illumined even further when they rec-ognized the true Light and Glory of God in the New-Born King, Jesus Christ. May they inspire us to look up, look around, look within, with eyes open to how God’s glory is reflected in mystery and grandeur all around us, everyday. But even more so, may we always pray to, like the Magi, come to recognize the true Light and Glory of God residing in Jesus Christ, to whom we offer our gifts of worship and praise every day. La última vez que estos dos pasaron tan cerca el uno del otro fue hace poco menos de 800 años, en 1226. Mira: las tinieblas cubren la tierra y espesa niebla envuelve a los pueblos; pero sobre ti resplandece el Señor y en ti se manifiesta su gloria." ¿Vio la luz brillante en el cielo y, a través del Espíritu Santo, conoció las verdades más profundas de la providencia de Dios y las obras para traer la salvación al mundo? El año 2020 se sintió como " las tinieblas cubren la tierra y espesa niebla envuelve a los pueblos", y sin embargo esta misma "estrella" ha aparecido en nuestros días. Cuando la esperanza parece estar fuera de alcance, aquí viene un evento raro, nunca antes visto en la vida de alguien, para anunciar que Dios la tiene preordenada más allá de nuestra visión o nuestra imaginación. Siempre hay esperanza, siempre hay cosas que no podemos ver. Los Reyes Magos guardaban una profunda reverencia por la gloria del Señor reflejada en el misterio y la grandeza cósmica, y se encontraron iluminados aún más cuando reconocieron la verdadera Luz y Gloria de Dios en el Rey recién nacido, Jesucristo. Que nos inspire a mirar hacia arriba, a mirar alrededor, a mirar dentro, con los ojos abiertos a cómo la gloria de Dios se refleja en el misterio y la grandeza a nuestro alrededor , todos los días .
