SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN) (1891‐1942) ‐ August 9 “Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ condemna on of their genocide, took into cus‐tody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non‐prac cing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as pro‐fessor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one si ng, then declared, “That is the Truth!” Bap zed on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ ini a on into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presenta on in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecu on of the Jews, her presence could im‐peril the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The offertory hymn for today, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, is quite possibly one of my all‐ me favorite hymns. The reason for this really is that I come from a US Navy family. The tune has a great nobility about it and the words we would have sung today have the definite theme of faith in God during mes of peril; in this case, at sea. A hymn generally has three parts: tune, meter, text. The tune and the meter allow for a variety of texts as long as they match the first two parts. This is why you might sing a hymn and know the tune but be very new to the words. The hymn tune usually has a tle. This hymn tle is Melita. The compos‐er of the tune may have wri en it in a par cular city and that becomes the

tle; he or she may fondly be remem‐bering a person and that becomes the tle; or, as in this case, a fellow named John Bacchus Dykes wrote this tune specifically for the sea faring words and used the tle Melita as it is an old form of the name Malta, the loca on of St. Paul’s shipwreck in Acts 27. Hymn tunes have iambic meter corresponding to syllabic stresses of a poe c line. The meter of Melita is 88 88 88. Any poe c line that matches this can be sung to this tune. Over the years the text has been modified to include other branches of military ser‐vice. The text of this hymn is very deliberate. The writer, William Whi ng, was reflec ng on an experience he had. William was born in England and no doubt spent me in the ocean, frolicking about in the breaking waves. Years later, William took a journey by sea and was unfortunate enough to sail into a powerful storm. The storm was so great the crew lost control of the vessel. During this me of possible peril William relied on his faith in God to protect the ship, crew, and passengers. Knowledgeable in scrip‐ture, it is most possible he brought to mind Psalm 107 describing God’s deliverance from a storm on the sea; In their distress they cried to the LORD,

who brought them out of their peril; He hushed the storm to silence,

the waves of the sea were s lled. They rejoiced that the sea grew calm,

that God brought them to the harbor they longed for.

Or, he reflected on today’s Gospel from Ma hew with Christ walking on water. I hope you are able to find comfort in the stormy waves of everyday life through the words of this

hymn. (1) Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidst the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! (2) O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard And hushed their raging at Thy word, Who walked'st on the foaming deep, And calm amidst its rage didst sleep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea! (3) Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, And bid its angry tumult cease, And give, for wild confusion, peace; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! (4) O Trinity of love and power! Our brethren shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them wheresoe'er they go; Thus evermore shall rise to Thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

Monthly Themes for the Year of St. Joseph The monthly themes for the Year of St. Joseph are taken from St. Joseph’s virtues and tles as prayed in the Litany of St. Joseph (see below). August – Mirror of Pa ence September – Joseph Most Prudent October – Terror of Demons November – Patron of Dying and Solace of the Afflicted December – Chaste Guardian of Virgins and Pillar of Families

August – Mirror of Pa ence Pa ence is willingness to suffer. A pa ent is one who suffers a malady not by choice whereas a pa ent man is one who suffers voli onally rather than relinquish the voca on given him. Joseph was pa ent because of his love. He was willing to suffer anything, even the loss of Our Lady and the Divine Child by being the first to die.
