You, LORD, are our father, our redeemer you are

named forever. Why do you let us wander, O

LORD, from your ways, and harden our hearts so

that we fear you not? Return for the sake of your

would rend the heavens and come down, with the

awesome deeds we could not hope for, such as

A SHORT ADVENT BEGINS: Advent 2017 is the shortest the season can ever be. Christmas falls on a Monday, leaving us only 22 days of prayer-preparation for the celebration of our parish’s festal season. We will soon enough, therefore, be observing the Season of the Incarnation. Until then, please let these few weeks be a reminder of what it means to hope. Most of us do not like to wait, even though life is in fact of-ten a waiting game. And so we end up masking our anxiety with foolish and unnecessary things, even with sinful and unworthy things. Advent 2017 is given to us as a kind of “School for Waiting in Joyful Hope”. AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR OF WAITING: And Ad-vent marks the beginning of a new liturgical year. Our Church’s year starts out with an ancient story of promise and fulfillment: the Birth of the Messiah. Then the rest of the year can be considered another long Advent Season, since we live in this world only temporarily, and are looking forward to an eternal destiny in that Kingdom that is not yet fully present. So, for the next twenty-two days, as well as for all the days that follow it, you might make this tradi-tional phrase part of your prayer: Come, Lord Jesus. BAKE AND BOUTIQUE: Advent begins this week-end with a fun pre-holiday event, Incarnation’s Bake and Boutique. Join us in the church hall for a Sun-day morning Pancake Breakfast, and stay to do some of your Christmas shopping. THE FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION: This Friday is the patronal feast of the USA. Ameri-cans are a people of optimistic hope, and the Im-maculate Conception celebrates the awesome prom-ise of being human. In the Opening Prayer of the Mass, we ask God to allow us the same grace that he gave to

EL INICIO DE UN ADVIENTO BREVE: El de es-te año es el más breve Adviento posible. Con Na-vidad en un lunes, tenemos solo 22 días de pre-paración por el Tiempo de la Encarnación. Hasta entonces, permitamos que este tiempo sea una “escuela de esperanza”. A muchos no nos gusta tener que esperar, aunque hay muchos retrasos en la vida. Escondemos nuestra ansiedad con diversiones tontas e innecesarias, y hasta indig-nas y pecaminosas. El Adviento puede enseñar-nos que significa “esperar la gloriosa venida de nuestro Salvador”. Y UN FELIZ AñO NUEVO DE ESPERA: Adviento es el inicio de un nuevo año litúrgico. El ciclo de la oración de la Iglesia se empieza con una historia antigua de promesa y cumplimiento: el Nacimiento del Mesías. Pues podemos considerar el resto del año como un adviento extendido, porque estamos en este mundo solo temporalmente, y miramos por un destino eterno en ese Reino no todavía presente en su plenitud. Por eso, en estos 22 días y en los muchos que seguirán, digamos con toda la Iglesia: “Ven, Señor Jesús”. KERMES DE NAVIDAD: Anualmente empezamos el tiempo de fiestas con nuestra Bake y Boutique: Pasteles y Bodega. Artesanía y dulces navideñas están al centro de un weekend de venta y desayuno. Vengan hoy por el desayuno de pan-queques, y quédense por un poco de compras navideñas. FIESTA DE LA INMACULADA: Este viernes en la fiesta patronal de los EEUU. Somos un pueblo opti-mista, y la Inmaculada Concepción celebra la pro-mesa maravillosa de la vida verdaderamente huma-na. Jesus’ Mother: “Help us by her prayers to live in your presence without sin.” Come to Mass and make that your prayer too. We have Masses this Friday at 8:30 AM and 6:00 PM. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE: And the Tuesday that follows Immaculate Conception will be the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. You will find that day’s Mass schedule elsewhere in this bulletin, and you can read more about the devotion in my column next week-end. In the meantime, please plan to join us for one of the Masses for “Our Lady’s” day. If your work or school schedule makes it impossible to be here on December 8, you may find that the Guadalupe schedule is more convenient. OUR TRAVELERS TO WASHINGTON: Monday morning a busload of Twin Citians left from Incarna-tion to go to Washington DC. Once there – and on the way to and from the nation’s capital – they have been speaking with elected officials about the needs and hopes of immigrants. I was moved not only by the pilgrims themselves, but also by the dozen or so parish members who turned out at 6:00 AM to cheer them on. My thanks to those who are speaking up and those who are encouraging them. NEXT WEEKEND: RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT COL-LECTION: We will take up a second collection at all Masses on December 9 and 10. Its purpose is to support the Religious Sisters and Brothers who built so many of our institutions and are now living in re-tirement. During the great days of American Catho-lic expansion in the middle of the 20th Century, they reinvested all of the income of their communities in service institutions – schools, hospitals, universities – rather than in their own pensions. Please help them live decently in their senior years. BIRTHDAYS IN MY FAMILY: These days right after Thanksgiving are a time for continued celebration in the McDonough family. We observe four birthdays in ten days. My sisters Anna and Katia just turned 46 and 59, my brother Denis is now 48, and our mom Kay will turn 85 on Tuesday. Please pray good health for my loved ones. BOOK GROUP: A RIFT IN THE EARTH: My reading friends are gathering tomorrow evening to talk about a very interesting and timely book. James Reston Jr. wrote an engaging history of the design and execu-tion of the Vietnam War Memorial on the Capitol Mall in Washington. What may seem like a rather esoter-ic question has gotten new energy in our current na-tional arguments about Civil War monuments. Think of the intensity with which at least some people are considering the renaming of our own neighborhood’s Lake Calhoun. A good read that will likely generate a fun conversation.

Podría pa-recer una cuestión bastante esotérica, pero hay un interés recién renovado en imágenes memoriales. Piensen en las controversias sobre los monumentos de la Guerra Civil al nivel nacional, y aquí en Minneapolis la consideración de un renombramiento del lago que ahora se conoce como Calhoun. El libro fue interesante, y debe de provocar una conversación rica.
