FIRST READING 1 SAMUEL 3:3B-10, 19
Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD
where the ark of God was. The LORD called to
Samuel, who answered, "Here I am." Samuel ran to
Eli and said, "Here I am. You called me." "I did not
call you, " Eli said. "Go back to sleep." So he went
back to sleep. Again the LORD called Samuel, who
rose and went to Eli. "Here I am, " he said. "You
called me." But Eli answered, "I did not call you, my
son. Go back to sleep." At that time Samuel was not
familiar with the LORD, because the LORD had not
revealed anything to him as yet. The LORD called
Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and
going to Eli, he said, "Here I am. You called me."
Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the
youth. So he said to Samuel, "Go to sleep, and if
you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your servant
is listening." When Samuel went to sleep in his
place, the LORD came and revealed his presence,
calling out as before, "Samuel, Samuel!" Samuel
answered, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not
permitting any word of his to be without effect.

SECOND READING 1 CORINTHIANS 6:13C-15A, 17-20
Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality,
but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God
raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do
you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?
But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit
with him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person
commits is outside the body, but the immoral person
sins against his own body. Do you not know that your
body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom
you have from God, and that you are not your own?
For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore
glorify God in your body.
The word of the Lord. Everyone: Thanks be to God
GOSPEL JOHN 1:35-42
John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he
watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of
God." The two disciples heard what he said and followed
Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said
to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him,
"Rabbi" — which translated means Teacher —, "where are
you staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see."
So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they
stayed with him that day. It was about four in the
afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one
of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first
found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have
found the Messiah" — which is translated Christ —. Then
he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said,
"You are Simon the son of John; you will be called
Cephas" — which is translated Peter.

En aquellos días, el joven Samuel servía en el templo a
las órdenes del sacerdote Elí. Una noche, estando Elí
acostado en su habitación y Samuel en la suya, dentro del
santuario donde se encontraba el arca de Dios, el Señor
llamó a Samuel y éste respondió: "Aquí estoy". Fue co-
rriendo a donde estaba Elí y le dijo: "Aquí estoy. ¿Para
qué me llamaste?" Respondió Elí: "Yo no te he llamado.
Vuelve a acostarte". Samuel se fue a acostar. Volvió el
Señor a llamarlo y él se levantó, fue a donde estaba Elí y
le dijo: "Aquí estoy. ¿Para qué me llamaste?" Respondió
Elí: "No te he llamado, hijo mío. Vuelve a acostarte". Aún
no conocía Samuel al Señor, pues la palabra del Señor no
le había sido revelada. Por tercera vez llamó el Señor a
Samuel; éste se levantó, fue a donde estaba Elí y le dijo:
"Aquí estoy. ¿Para qué me llamaste?" Entonces compren-
dió Elí que era el Señor quien llamaba al joven y dijo a
Samuel: "Ve a acostarte, y si te llama alguien, responde:
'Habla, Señor; tu siervo te escucha' ". Y Samuel se fue a
acostar. De nuevo el Señor se presentó y lo llamó como
antes: "Samuel, Samuel". Éste respondió: "Habla, Señor;
tu siervo te escucha". Samuel creció y el Señor estaba
con él. Y todo lo que el Señor le decía, se cumplía.

SEGUNDA LECTURA 1 CORINTIOS 6, 13C-15A. 17-20
Hermanos: El cuerpo no es para fornicar, sino para servir al
Señor; y el Señor, para santificar el cuerpo. Dios resucitó al
Señor y nos resucitará también a nosotros con su poder. ¿No
saben ustedes que sus cuerpos son miembros de Cristo? Y el
que se une al Señor, se hace un solo espíritu con él. Huyan,
por lo tanto, de la fornicación. Cualquier otro pecado que
cometa una persona, queda fuera de su cuerpo; pero el que
fornica, peca contra su propio cuerpo. ¿O es que no saben
ustedes que su cuerpo es templo del Espíritu Santo, que han

'maestro'). Él les dijo: "Vengan a ver". Fueron, pues, vie-
ron dónde vivía y se quedaron con él ese día. Eran como
las cuatro de la tarde. Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro,
era uno de los dos que oyeron lo que Juan el Bautista de-
cía y siguieron a Jesús. El primero a quien encontró An-
drés, fue a su hermano Simón, y le dijo: "Hemos encon-
trado al Mesías" (que quiere decir 'el Ungido'). Lo llevó a
donde estaba Jesús y éste, fijando en él la mirada, le dijo:
"Tú eres Simón, hijo de Juan. Tú te llamarás Kefás" (que
significa Pedro, es decir 'roca').

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time:

Our Sunday liturgies in pandemic time are “Sunday School
Masses”. Sermons each weekend come (as always) from
the Church’s readings. And they support curricula for
young candidates for sacraments (and for their parents and
teachers). For First Communicants, this is the second of
four sessions: “the Liturgy of the Eucharist”. For Con-
firmands, this is second of eleven sessions about:”Jesus the
Anointed One”.
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus receives two titles. One of
them – the Messiah – is especially important for our Con-
firmation students. The other – the Lamb of God – will be
the focus of First Communion class today. And the combi-
nation of both titles can speak powerfully to the rest of us.
First: the Messiah. We translate this Hebrew-based word into
English as “the Anointed One”. In Greek, by the way, it is “ho
Cristos”, from which we derive “the Christ”. When Andrew
identifies Jesus of Nazareth with this title, he is saying: God
has given this Jesus a unique role in saving our people, and
God has also given him the power to fulfill the role.
Second: the Lamb of God. John calls Jesus by this title in
order to emphasize Jesus’ sacrifice. John knows that he
himself is meeting opposition: even violent and fatal oppo-
sition. And the same is in store for his cousin Jesus. All
prophets, John and Jesus tell us, will suffer. This is all the
more ironic for Jesus, because he is innocent and without
sin. Jesus is to be the unblemished lamb of sacrifice.
Third: the combination. Other people in Jewish history were
considered anointed ones, or christs. Often they had a military
role, saving the people by driving away foreign invaders. Not
Jesus. Jesus saves God’s people, including us, by his self-
sacrifice. In his innocence, he takes our guilt on himself. You
and I, anointed at our baptisms, are to imitate him. We con-
tribute to the salvation of the people we love not by harming
their enemies but by laying down our own live.
Notes for First Communion parents and teachers:
1. In the second half of the Mass, just before Communion, we call
Jesus “Lamb of God” while the priest breaks Jesus’ Body (in
the form of bread). This is a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice. What
are some other ways we show that Jesus was sacrificed?
2. What are some ways that you can imitate Jesus by sacrific-
ing yourself for your friends?
Notes for Confirmation parents and teachers:
1. “Christ” is Jesus’ title. Can you guess what his “last
name” may have been?
2. You were anointed in baptism and confirmation, and so
you received a role in advancing the good of other people.
What are some ways you are called to help other people?
3. You were anointed in baptism and confirmation, and so
you received grace to carry out your role. What are some
ways God strengthens you to help other people?

Nuestras liturgias dominicales en tiempos de pandemia son “misas
catequéticas”. Los sermones de cada fin de semana provienen
(como siempre) de las lecturas de la Iglesia. Y apoyan los pla-
nes de estudio para los jóvenes candidatos a los sacramentos (y
para sus padres y maestros). Para los Primeros Comunicantes,
esta es la segunda de cuatro sesiones: “la Liturgia de la Euca-
ristía”. Para los Confirmandos, esta es la segunda de once
sesiones sobre: "Jesús el Ungido".
En el Evangelio, Jesús recibe dos títulos. Uno, el Mesías, es de
importancia especial para los candidatos de Confirmación.
El otro, el Cordero de Dios, será el foco de la clase de Prime-
ra Comunión de hoy. Y la combinación de ambos títulos
puede hablar poderosamente al resto de nosotros.
Primero: el Mesías. Traducimos esta palabra basada en hebreo
al español como "el Ungido". En griego, es "ho Cristos", de
donde derivamos "el Cristo". Cuando Andrés identifica a
Jesús de Nazaret con este título, está diciendo: Dios le ha
dado a este Jesús un papel único para salvar a nuestro pueblo,
y Dios también le ha dado el poder para cumplir ese papel.
Segundo: el Cordero de Dios. Juan llama a Jesús por este título
para enfatizar el sacrificio de Jesús. Juan sabe que él mismo
encuentra oposición: incluso una oposición violenta y fatal.
Y lo mismo le espera a su primo Jesús. Todos los profetas,
nos dicen Juan y Jesús, sufrirán. Esto es aún más irónico
para Jesús, porque es inocente y sin pecado. Jesús debe ser el
cordero de sacrificio sin mancha.
Tercero: la combinación. Otras personas en la historia judía fueron
consideradas ungidas o cristos. A menudo tenían un papel mili-
tar, salvando a la gente alejando a los invasores. Jesús no. Jesús
salva al pueblo de Dios, incluyéndonos a nosotros, por su abne-

grieve. May God travel with you on this difficult journey and

A TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: Paul gives us a
powerful image in today’s second reading. Do you not
know, he says, that your body is a temple of the Holy
Spirit? As close as we are to the Season of the Incar-
nation, we know the saving significance of the flesh
assumed by the Son of God. Our bodies too are sa-
cred. We do not misuse them, especially for immorali-
ty. And we treat them with reverence – decent diet,
exercise, and sleep; the avoidance of various poison-
ous chemicals. We love God with all we are: mind,
heart, soul and, yes, with our bodily strength.
DR. KING’S DAY: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. knew
daily bodily danger because of his advocacy for human
dignity and justice. He also knew that such danger
was the price of speaking God’s truth. On 4 April 1968
an assassin’s bullet tore his body from his soul. But his
soul lives on with God in heaven and among us – when
we actively recognize all our neighbors as sisters and
brothers. Let’s act with and for him.
END OF “THE HOLIDAYS”: Dr. King’s Day puts a
fitting exclamation point on what we began on No-
vember 26, Thanksgiving Day. We began the holi-
days with gratitude for God’s blessings in 2020. We
then celebrated at length the mystery of the Word
made flesh. And now we conclude with a renewed
commitment to following Jesus through 2021. May
God bless the entire year that lies ahead!
DR. SAMUEL MYERS SR: An older contemporary of
Dr. King’s died ten days ago. You can read about
TEMPLO DEL ESPÍRITU SANTO: Pablo nos da una
imagen poderosa en la segunda lectura. ¿No sabes, di-
ce, que tu cuerpo es templo del Espíritu Santo? Tan cer-
ca como estamos al tiempo de la Encarnación, conoce-
mos el significado salvador de la carne asumida por el
Hijo de Dios. Nuestros cuerpos también son sagrados.
No los usamos mal, especialmente por inmoralidad. Y
los tratamos con reverencia: dieta, ejercicio y sueño de-
cente; la evitación de varios productos químicos veneno-
sos. Amemos a Dios con todo lo que somos: mente, co-
razón, alma y, sí, con nuestra fuerza corporal.
DÍA DE DR. KING: El Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. conoció
el peligro corporal diario debido a su defensa de la dignidad
humana y la justicia. También sabía que ese peligro era el
precio de hablar la verdad de Dios. El 4 de abril 1968, la
bala de un asesino le arrancó el cuerpo del alma. Pero su
alma vive con Dios en el cielo y entre nosotros, cuando re-

manas y hermanos. Actuemos con y para él.

I had the privilege of knowing him through his son
and my friend, who bears his father’s name and
commitments. The struggle to which Drs. King and
Myers gave their lives is now ours to continue.
ARCHBISHOP HEBDA AT INCARNATION: Next
Saturday evening our Archbishop will celebrate our
simple 5:00 PM Mass in our parish church. His visit
has no other reason than his desire to see Incarna-
tion and to express his support of our community.
With the virus still prowling, I am hoping for limited
attendance in the church, but lots of electronic con-
nection: search “incarnationmpls facebook”.
SHORTER SHIFTS NEXT SATURDAY? The next two
weeks are usually the coldest of the year. And right in
the middle comes our next Food Distribution. Longer
range weather predictions suggest a milder-than-usual
day. But that still means it will be cold! Would you
consider coming to help for about ninety minutes,
sometime between 8:30 and 11:30 AM? Here is my
hope: we can have “tag teams” of volunteers, so that
people can take occasional warm-up breaks in the
church while others stand in for them. Put on an extra
layer and join us on Saturday, January 23.
FEAST OF SAINT PAUL APOSTLE: January 25 is
the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul – and the
patronal feast of our Archdiocese and of Axochiapan,
Mexico. It usually occasions two or more days of big
celebrations. This year, however, we will tone it
down, celebrating the 11:00 AM Mass on January 24
and the 6:00 PM on January 25 in the Apostle’s hon-
or. Join us – virtually or in person.
YOUR WINDFALL COULD EQUAL ANOTHER’S
RENT: Some of our members have already received
stimulus payments from the US Treasury. But not all
our families are even eligible. If you would like to
dedicate some of your extra funds to such a family,
please contact us in the office. And as an extra con-
sideration: our related-but-separate non-profit Sa-
grado Corazon is now eligible for corporate and foun-
dation gifts. Perhaps we can double the effect of
your generosity!
SUNSET AFTER 5:00 PM: For the first time since
early November the sun sets today no earlier than
5:00 PM. And each day we get an extra two minutes
of daylight. We can still be subjected to ferocious
cold in these days, but warmer air will soon more
regularly accompany the increased sunlight. We
have survived winter’s darkest days – congratula-
tions!

mo voluntarios, tomando descansos de calentamiento

SAN PABLO APOSTOL: El 25 enero es la Fiesta de
la Conversión de San Pablo - y la fiesta patronal de
nuestra Arquidiócesis y de Axochiapan, México.
Suele ser motivo de dos o más días de grandes ce-
lebraciones. Este año bajaremos el ritmo, celebran-
do las Misas de las 11:00 a.m. el 24 enero y las
6:00 p.m. del 25 enero en honor del Apóstol. Únete
a nosotros - virtualmente o en persona.
TU EXTRA PODRÍA IGUALAR LA RENTA DE
OTRO: Algunos feligreses ya han recibido pagos de
estímulo del Tesoro nacional. Pero no todas nuestras
familias son elegibles. Si deseas dedicar algunos de

primera vez desde principios de noviembre, el sol no
se pone hoy hasta las 5:00 PM. Y cada día tenemos
dos minutos extra de luz natural. Todavía podemos
estar sujetos a un frío feroz en estos días, pero el aire
más cálido pronto acompañará con mayor regularidad
al aumento de la luz solar. Hemos sobrevivido a los
