Captain James Cook

1768 – 1771As commander of the Endeavour, I sailed with

a crew of scientists and sailors to Tahiti in the

Pacific Ocean. Our mission was to see the planet

Venus pass in front of the Sun to help astronomers

measure the distance between the Earth and the

Sun. I also had a secret mission from the British

Navy: to sail for a ‘new land’ at the bottom of the

Earth. After Tahiti, we landed in New Zealand

and I realised it was actually two islands. We also

sailed up the coast of New Holland*, the land

the Dutch explorers found in the 17th century.

We didn’t find the ‘new land’, but I made a lot of

important maps on the journey.

Blog

Hi everyone! This week, I want to tell you about four of my favourite places to shop in Britain’s capital!

1 Oxford Street is London’s most famous shopping street. It’s 1.2 miles long with over 300 shops. You can find anything you want in its huge department stores and high street shops. And there are amazing bargains during the sales. I buy all my clothes there then! Christmas is also a big event – they light up the street with 750,000 light bulbs!

2 Canary Wharf Shopping Centre is actually five shopping malls in one, with more than 120 shops. Once the old port of London, Canary Wharf is now the centre of London’s financial district. Its exclusive boutiques and beauty salons are popular with business people. It’s near the river and a great place to watch runners in the London Marathon go by.

3 Carnaby Street was where all the famous pop and rock stars bought their trendy clothes back in the swinging 1960s. It was THE place to shop! Now, it’s still a good place to go for leading brand names and unusual handmade jewellery. I love the ethnic restaurants there, too.

4 Covent Garden was London’s main fruit and vegetable market from 1670 right up until 1974, when it moved away. Today, it’s a fashionable place to shop for clothes, crafts and gifts. You can also find sweets there that are difficult to find anywhere else! And the entertainment nearby ranges from street performers to the Royal Opera House.
