EGIS Explosives Detection Systems

The EGIS is deployed throughout European and USA airports to provide, along with X-ray equipment, screening of hand luggage, electronic devices and passengers.  EGIS sensitivity to many explosives helps ensure maximum security at border crossings.Product DetailSystem DescriptionThe EGIS Explosives Detection Systems, EGIS II and EGIS III, are highly sensitive devices developed to detect various types of commercial and military explosives, including dynamite, Semtex, C4, and TNT.  EGIS Systems are designed to be used in conjunction with other techniques in order to provide a comprehensive program to screen for explosives. How EGIS WorksSimple One-Person, One-Button OperationThe EGIS System utilizes identical separation and detection technologies used in advanced forensic laboratories worldwide: gas chromatography combined with chemiluminescent detection, providing the EGIS with the ultimate in speed, accuracy and sensitivity without compromise.  Gas chromatography is the most widely used scientific technique for the positive separation and identification of explosive compounds in a complex mixture.  The sample material is heated into a gaseous form, added to a carrier gas and introduced into the separation column where the mixture is separated into its individual component compounds by precisely controlled temperature cycling.  These components are pass to the chemiluminescent detector in the carrier gas. Unlike other detectors which respond to the thousands of non-nitro compounds in a sample, the chemiluminescent detector of the EGIS will only respond to nitro-based compounds of certain structures in the sample, making the EGIS more selective with less false positives.  As all nitrogen-based high explosives contain nitro groups, the nitro-selective chemiluminescent detector of EGIS is ideal due to its unique selectively.Sample Wipe Method

The EGIS detection system utilizes specially designed sample wipes to obtain its sample.  The EGIS operator rubs a sample wipe on the surfaces of objects, areas, vehicles, or people to collect any explosive residue present.  The amount of sampling time varies from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the size of the object, the security risk involved, and the amount of time that is available to conduct the sampling.  When done, the operator immediately inserts the sample wipe into the sample inlet port on the EGIS, which automatically initiates an analysis cycle. Within 16 seconds or less, the analysis is complete, and EGIS displays either a Clear or Alarm message.  If the Alarm message displays, one or more explosives have been detected.  The type(s) of explosive(s) found will be displayed.  If the Clear message displays, no explosives were detected. Portable Sampler

The portable sampler unit features patented high-speed chromatography developed specifically for explosives detection. This technology ensures accuracy for a full range of explosives, even at extremely low detection levels.  The convenient hand-held sampling device can collect vapors from volatile compounds, such as nitroglycerin, TNT, and ICAO taggants, as well as trace particles from non-volatile explosives, such as RDX and PETN.

2 CT-1128 Portable GC-MS

Gas Chromatograph-Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis is routinely used in analytical laboratories worldwide. Frequently, it is used for quantitative determination and characterization of both known and unknown chemicals. However, most commercial GC-MS systems are large, non-portable, laboratory based units. In order to transport them, the user must also transport all the necessary support equipment such as a gas supply, a vacuum system etc. The CT-1128 is a light weight, ruggedized, field serviceable device and is available to Government organizations and private firms for environmental assessments, arms control and non-proliferation activities, as well as detecting and identifying hazardous substances released during an accident or terrorist attack. The CT-1128 provides a cost-effective, efficient means for analyzing, on-site, unknown chemicals in various emergency and non-emergency circumstances. The CT-1128 weighs approximately 70 lbs and is only 15" L x 23" W x 15" H. It is completely contained in a single carrying case housing the entire system. With a range of 1.6 to 800 Atomic Mass Units (AMU) and a library of hundreds of known spectra, the CT-1128 is unmatched in its ability to allow First Responders, as well as others, to quickly, efficiently, and reliably assess the situation and take the proper precautions to protect everyone involved. This photo shows the CT-1128 installed in a mobile laboratory. The laptop allows the user to interface with a main laboratory, for analysis assistance.

ProductsQuantum Sniffer QS-H150™ Portable Explosives Detector

Real Time Explosives Trace Detection

Quantum Sniffer Technology

The Quantum Sniffer employs a novel technology for the detection of explosives vapors that is more sensitive than existing detection devices. The advanced technique detects the presence of parts per trillion (ppt) of explosives molecules, without physical contact and in real time. The unique patented vortex sample acquisition system collects the sample, ionizes it with the unique QS™ electro-optical ionization scheme, identifies the sample via standard ion mobility technology and, if an explosive is present, will produce a visual and audible alarm. The LCD will display the identity of the explosive present and the audible alarm can be switched off if required. Quantum Sniffer is the only Explosives Trace Detector with true automatic self calibration — no user intervention is required.

QS-H150

The QS-H150 Portable Explosives Trace Detector was developed in conjunction with the U.S. Navy (NCIS and NAVEODTECHDIV) and PSEAG. The device is capable of detecting trace amounts of most commercial and military explosives, including RDX, PETN, HMX, TNT, Black Powder and Ammonium Nitrate at nanogram level concentrations.

The detection is "real time" with immediate cleardown which dramatically improves throughput. The instrument is noncontact and does not use expensive consumables. The QS-H150 uses a proprietary opto/electrical ionization technique rather than a radioactive source for ionization and hence there is no need to deal with complicated NRC regulatory requirements.

6 Xenon Detectors

There is a need for reliable and sensitive nuclear radiation systems suitable for detecting accidental or intentional transport of special nuclear materials through portals such as border crossings, exits from nuclear storage facilities, gates of nuclear plants, etc. The detectors for these systems must be rugged, affordable, and insensitive to environmental temperature extremes. They must have good efficiency and energy resolution, but not require frequent servicing and maintenance; for example, they cannot be reliant on liquid cryogenic systems.

Practically all nuclear material emits gamma-rays with a characteristic signature. Therefore, these gamma-rays can be used for detection and identification of the nuclear material. To date, two general categories of gamma-ray spectrometers have been used for these purposes:

Semiconductor detectors (germanium has the highest resolution) have excellent energy resolution (~0.1% at 1 MeV). However, semiconductor detectors are very expensive and are comparatively sensitive to hostile environments.

Scintillation detectors (NaI(Tl) is the most popular scintillator) have the advantages of ambient-temperature operation, relatively low cost per unit of mass,

8

Page 9: EGIS Explosives Detection Systems

and are available in large crystals. However, scintillation detectors suffer from low energy resolution, are fragile, and are sensitive to temperature changes.

Recent progress has been made in developing high-pressure xenon ionization chambers that are:

Relatively insensitive to temperature changes Rugged

Have demonstrated a good energy resolution with high efficiency and without cryocooling

Constellation has developed a family of high-pressure xenon ionization chambers (HPXe) with a mass of working medium between 100 g and 2 kg. These detectors demonstrate good energy resolution (below 3% FWHM at 662 keV for 0.8 kg HPXe mass) that is close to the resolution of room temperature semiconductor detectors with only a few grams working mass. They fill the niche in energy resolution between germanium and scintillation detectors. The detectors employ a relatively simple design, robust construction, and are available in a variety of pipe-like configurations. The sensitive area of HPXe may cover a few square feet and detect gamma rays with an efficiency close to solid state detectors. Constellation HPXe experimental detectors have been constructed in portable and mobile systems available for testing in the conditions typical of nuclear storage facilities or plants.

The HPXe-1001 detection system has the detector mounted on a shock-absorbing frame inside a transportable case. The detector is integrated with a charge-sensitive preamplifier (CSPA) and high-voltage power supply (HVPS). A low-voltage power supply is installed in the case. The system requires standard 120V AC power. The data-acquisition system is not included in the system. Optionally, a number of MCA devices can be provided for data analysis. The HPXe-1001 specifications are:

A schematic drawing of the detector design is shown below. All internal parts are made of stainless steel and ceramic. The cylindrical vessel has the following dimensions: 119 mm outside diameter, 770 mm length, and 3.1 mm wall thickness. The vessel has been hydraulically test at 100 bar internal pressure. The shielding grid is a 40 mm diameter cylinder made of 0.25 mm thick stainless steel mesh with 5 x 3 mm holes spaced 0.25 mm apart. The screening efficiency of the grid is 97%. The grid is secured to the vessel of the chamber with annular ceramic insulators. In addition, these insulators suppress microphonics and protect the chamber from external vibrations and acoustical effects. Two high voltage (HV) ceramic feedthroughs are mounted on the flange. A gas input valve, a charge-sensitive amplifier, and a compact HV power supply with filter are mounted to the flange as shown below. One HV feedthrough is used for signal output and the other one is used for the high voltage supply (connected to the grid). The vessel and Teflon® cylindrical insulator are covered by several Teflon®-aluminum-polyolephyne (shrink tube) layers serving as electrostatic and HV shielding. The sensitive volume of the detector is 2 liters. The end-on sensitive area is 100 cm2. The operational gas pressure is 40-50 atmospheres (atm). A voltage of 20.5 kV is applied to the cathode, and 12.5 kV to the shielding grid.

NBCerberus is a mobile Nuclear, Biological and Chemical detection system. It is a recent concept in stand-alone detection and identification technologies that are combined into one package, to monitor the atmosphere constantly around a site or at a single location. NBCerberus is designed to be fitted to a truck and moved around to provide protection at large public events.Named after Cerberus, the three-headed dog from Greek mythology who sat at the gates of Hades and sniffed the atmosphere, NBCerberus is designed to detect the presence of NBC agents in the atmosphere. NBCerberus builds on the expertise that Smiths Detection has brought to the provision of biological/chemical agent detection for Ministries of Defence, police and civil defence agencies around the world.NBCerberus assimilates the results of its various instruments and relays details back to a command centre or central co-ordinating facility. Data can be sent from the NBCerberus by any one of a number of data links such as radio, microwave, hard wire or fibre cable. The whole system can be fitted into an environmental container or a small van or trailer. The stand-alone variant, based on a trailer or the environmental cabinet, is self sufficient for 24 hours and can be left unattended. The design of NBCerberus recognises that technology, particularly in the biological field, is developing very quickly, so provision must be made for new instruments to be incorporated to boost the effectiveness of the system. The whole system is therefore

Feature Highlights Detect and identify over 40 explosive or narcotic substances Tested, field-proven instrument Used daily by Military, AVSEC, Customs, Corrections and at high-profile

facilities Simple operation, easy to maintain

Options Printer Trolley Long Life Air Purification Unit (LLAPU) DC remote sampler

With billions of US dollars in drug and asset seizures being made with the assistance of an IONSCAN, and thousands being used at major international airports, by the military and law enforcement agencies, the IONSCAN 400B is the world’s most popular desktop explosives or narcotics trace detector.

A simple wipe with a swab over items such as checked or carry-on luggage, portable electronic devices, and packages is all that is necessary to collect a sample which is then

18

placed into the IONSCAN for analysis. In 8 seconds the color-coded display presents results to the operator — red for a detection and green for the “all-clear”. If a contraband substance is detected, the specific name is identified on the display.  A detection of trace explosives indicates that an explosives device may be present or that the person may have been handling explosive material in preparing a bomb and further investigation is necessary.

Leading aviation organizations, including the FAA/TSA in the United States, Transport Canada, and the BAA in the United Kingdom, have evaluated and approved the IONSCAN for their aviation security needs.

Sample CollectionProper sample collection is key to the success of any trace detector.  The swab sampler provided with every IONSCAN is the most effective sample collector available.  The design allows sufficient force to be applied in sample collection without tiring the operator.

The long arm of the swab sampler allows the sample to be collected without risk of hand injury to the operator from hidden sharp objects.

Based on the highly successful and trusted IONSCAN series of trace detection instruments, the IONSCAN Document Scanner offers you another way to detect and identify traces of over 40 different explosive or narcotic substances in a quick 8 second analysis.

Samples can be collected by simply swiping passports and other travel documents over the sample disc or by using the optional swab sampler.  With a flip of a switch, the sample disc arm is automatically brought into the detector for analysis.

The color-coded display presents instrument status information and results to the operator in an easy-to-understand fashion.  If a detection is made, the specific explosive or narcotic is identified on the display.

A detection of explosives means that trace amounts of a particular explosive have been found on the item sampled.  It indicates that an explosive device may be present or that the person may have been handling explosive material in preparing a bomb and further investigation is necessary.

Options Protective cover with shoulder strap

For those who work tirelessly to protect the public, everyday presents a new challenge.  What will you be faced with today?  Strange odors? Suspicious packages? Drugs?

You need to have an instrument by your side that can detect the widest range of substances.

The SABRE 4000 is the only portable trace detector that can detect threats from explosives, chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals or narcotics, and can do so in approximately 20 seconds.  With a cold time start of 10 minutes and weighing approximately 7 lbs. including the 4-hour battery, the SABRE 4000 is a small, powerful ally in the war on terror and drug trafficking.

With the added TIC detection capability, new features such as the 3.5” color TFT display and standard 4-hour battery, the SABRE 4000 is still the smallest, lightest hand-held trace detector available.  It is also the only one that can detect and identify all the threats you face.

Trace DetectionA detection using the SABRE 4000 means that traces of a target substance have been found on the item sampled.  This in turn means that the item or its handler has been in contact with the identified substance and appropriate actions need to be taken.

Sample CollectionProper sample collection is key to the success of any trace detector.  The versatile SABRE 4000 is capable of analyzing either trace particle or vapor samples, allowing the operator to apply the ideal sampling technique for the substance suspected.

For example, most explosive and narcotic substance do not have a strong vapor presence and in the real world are very difficult to detect by vapor.  Therefore, the most reliable collection and analyis method for those substances is particle collection.  The nature of CW Agents and Toxic Industrial Chemicals make vapor sampling more appropriate for these substances.

The SABRE 4000’s ability to analyze either trace particle or vapor samples lets the operator decide which sample collection method will yield the most accurate analysis results.

IONSCAN SENTINEL IINON-CONTACT, WALK-THROUGH PORTAL FOR EXPLOSIVES OR NARCOTICS DETECTION

Feature Highlights True head-to-toe screening of people High throughput – screen 6 people per minute Fully automated Operator touch-screen color display

The challenge of detecting threats being carried by a person onto public transportation systems and into public and private buildings is one that is made easier with the IONSCAN SENTINEL II from Smiths Detection.  Only the SENTINEL II walk-through portal offers true head-to-toe, non-contact screening of people for trace explosive or narcotic substances.

Designed specifically for this challenge and to reduce the need for time-consuming physical searches, the SENTINEL II uses gentle puffs of air to dislodge particles trapped on hair, the body, clothing and shoes. Aided by gravity and a downward airflow, these particles are then directed into the SENTINEL II for analysis. Trace amounts of more than 40 different explosives or drugs are detected and identified in seconds.  The high throughput screening of up to 6 people per minute is made possible through the use of IONSCAN technology combined with pre-concentration technology developed by Sandia National Laboratories, licensed exclusively to Smiths Detection.

Operator interface is through a color touch screen display with results displayed in an easy-to-understand fashion. If there is an alarm, the color printer will automatically make prints of digital photos taken during the screening process.

22

Page 23: EGIS Explosives Detection Systems

Evolution of IONSCAN SENTINEL IIIn direct response to customer needs and as a result of field experiences, this new edition of the IONSCAN SENTINEL II requires less power, has a more modular frame design, which incorporates the compressor into the unit for easier installation and as a result, requires less space than earlier models of the SENTINEL.  Further enhancements include a more ergonomic design, improved passenger interface and easier maintenance.  All these improvements are made while maintaining the high sensitivity and reliability that you expect from a Smiths Detection IONSCAN instrument.

ApplicationsThe IONSCAN SENTINEL II answers the need for screening people for trace explosives or narcotics.  With it’s high throughput, the SENTINEL II is ideal for applications where large numbers of people need to be screened for threats quickly, such as at airports, customs, military bases, correctional facilities, at high profile facilities and public events.  Past security incidents, evidenced by the “shoe bomber”, show the lengths that terrorists will go when attempting to carry out their plans.  Only the SENTINEL II from Smiths Detection dislodges particles from head-to-toe for sampling.  By increasing the area from where samples are taken, the SENTINEL II is better equipped to help you determine whether explosives or narcotics may be concealed on a person, or when traces of these substances may remain on someone after handling explosives or narcotic material.

Drug Detection TimesDrug Time Table

Drug detection times indicate the period after you last used a drug. Drug testing can reveal its presence or resulting metabolites in your specimen. Drug detection times are affected by frequency of use, type of specimen, test method, cutoff levels, metabolism, and other factors.

The time table below was designed to help you understand the variety of drugs, their common names, medical usage, and the period of time they may be detected in the body. It includes commonly-abused drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine, hash, methamphetamine and other amphetamines. The detection periods refer to Urine, Blood and Saliva specimens. All substances will remain in the hair follicle until the specified period of usage is cut off. Most hair tests will test for a period of 90 to 120 days depending on growth. The urinalysis test is the most commonly-used drug testing method in today.
