From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends in Christ:

First and foremost…on this Father’s Day Weekend I offer to all fathers, grandfathers, uncles, Godfathers, Spiritual Fathers, and to all who fill the role of father in other people’s lives a very Happy Father’s Day! Please know that each of you are in our prayers.

For some in our parish this is a difficult day; some may be alone on this day away from their children, others may be mourning the recent death of their father or grandfather, and others may be struggling with the reality of not be-ing able to be a father. I assure all of you of our prayers as well.

This weekend each year I think of my own father, of course, and I thank God for being blessed with such a great man as my father. My father is genuinely a good man, a devoted husband, a great mentor, a man of sound advice, and a true exam-ple of what it means to be a father. Besides the usual things one can say about their father, or certainly those things I can say about my own dad, I have to say my father’s greatest gift to me and my brothers was his example. He truly lives his life putting others first whether it be his family, his friends, his neighbors, and even his coworkers. His example taught us, his sons, the importance of putting God first, others second, and yourself last. For this lesson, above all, and for his love, I am forever grateful to God for the gift of this man I am honored to call dad.

May Saint Joseph, the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the adopted father of our Lord Jesus Christ, patron of fa-thers pray for us all. Happy Father’s Day!

THANK YOU to the Saint Bridget of Sweden Women’s Society…this past Monday evening we celebrated our Wom-en’s Society. We gathered together for the celebration of the Eucharist to give thanks to God for all that the Women’s So-ciety has done this past year, and to ask His guidance upon them in the coming years. We then went to the Manor Inn for a dinner. At this dinner they awarded their scholarships to three of our parishioners; Ashley Amarante, Elizabeth Lurz, and

Caroline Mayer. What extraordinary young women these girls are! After listening to all that they are involved with I joked, “I am not sure how they have time for their studies.” Following the scholarship presentations we inducted the slate of officers for the coming year. We congratulate and promise our prayers to Patti Flynn-Harris, President, to Gail Rogers, Vice-President, to Kathy Kirby, Secretary, and to Kathy Demers, Treasurer.

At the dinner the Women’s Society also made a substantial donation to the parish. I am most grateful to the members of the Women’s Society for this gift and we will use it to purchase additional altar cloths for our altars. Since we have begun distributing

Holy Communion under both species we have had a few incidents of spillage in preparing the gifts that have made us real-ize we need additional altar cloths for our altars. So this year their gift will help us to ensure we have additional cloths for both churches. Thank you!

As was announced in the bulletin recently The Saint Bridget of Sweden Parish Pastoral Council is now continu-ing the work of developing a mission statement, vision statement, and a Strategic Plan for our parish family. I am very pleased with the preliminary outcomes of their meetings. The Holy Spirit is indeed at work! In just a few short weeks the council has already written a mission statement and vision statement for our parish family.

Please keep in mind the basic understanding that a mission statement is what drives us, it is what we do, and it is about whom we serve and how. Of course the guiding principle for any church’s mission statement is the mandate of Jesus in the Gospels to “go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

The Mission Statement of Saint Bridget Sweden Parish:

We, the Family of Saint Bridget of Sweden Parish, Cheshire, Connecticut, building on our rich heritage of Catholic Faith, center ourselves in the Eucharist and honor God in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ.

The vision statement, meanwhile, is what gives us direction as we live out our mission, it explains what are our hopes and

continued…

From the Pastor’s Desk (continued) dreams in living out our mission, and it describes what matters most to us as a parish family as we live out our mission.

The Vision Statement of Saint Bridget of Sweden Parish:

Saint Bridget of Sweden Parish Family is a spiritual home and a center of missionary outreach where all may come to be nourished in the midst of their journey. All who come are welcomed with warmth, harmony, belonging and will know they are home.

Please keep the Parish Pastoral Council in your prayers as they now begin the important work of developing a Strate-gic Plan to ensure that our mission and vision are realized in the life of our parish as we continue to grow together in faith. Pray that the Holy Spirit will guide this important work for our future as a Parish Family. Come, Holy Spirit, Come!

As always remember to pray for our parish families and ask God’s blessings as we build His kingdom here. Please know that I am praying for you, and I ask for your prayers for me, that together through the intercession of Saint Bridget of Swe-den, our new Patron, and united in the Eucharist, we will reflect the presence of Jesus to the world.

Nurses – your help is needed! In his earthly minis-try, Jesus healed body and soul. The Church has from our beginnings followed Jesus and ministered to the sick. An important and common illness in this coun-try is high blood pressure (hypertension). Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) indicate

that about one-third of the US population over the age of 20 has hyperten-sion, and this condition contributes to the prevalence of significant illness and associated death rates. In keeping with the mission to care for the sick, nurses in St. Bridget of Sweden Parish volunteer on a monthly basis during “Coffee And” to provide a service to help parishioners to know their blood pressure. This service can detect unknown high blood pressure or can assist a person in monitoring known hypertension between health care visits. Additional volunteers are needed to serve at both the St. Thomas Becket and St. Bridget locations. Please contact Kathy Wysoczanski at (203) 272-8494 or [email protected] if you are interested in joining this ministry.
