    Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

    June 17, 2012

  • Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, 2012

My dear friends in Christ, HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! I hope that your summer is going well! Of course you all know now that this is my anniversary month. On June 14, 1997 I was ordained to the priesthood by our beloved Bishop John S. Cummins. It has been 15 years since that very memorable day. I would say that it has been a wonderful ride with many challenges and transforming moments. As I reflect on my journey as a priest, one thing that is very clear: I am a human being graced with many gifts and strengths but also filled with many weaknesses. You know me as someone who loves sardines and chicken, creative and artistic, very compassionate and loving, approachable and easy to talk to, dedicated and committed, passionate and happy, tall and handsome. And humility is my greatest virtue! Ha ha ha! But I am sure---- there are so many things that you don’t know about me. One thing I know though is that I am not the most gifted person in the world, or the most intelligent, or the most handsome or the one with the most beautiful voice. I am just a simple priest, humbled to have been gifted with a compassionate heart. Perhaps I will be the first one to tell you that I love being a priest but not as an administrator or pastor. I love presiding at Mass on Sundays and weekdays, funerals and weddings. I have enjoyed doing baptisms and visiting the sick at home or in the hospital. I love being with people. Through the years, these are the things that have kept me going. Through faith and the power of his love that have embraced me throughout all these years, my ministry as a priest has been very rewarding. God’s love has been my guiding light and my strength. And you have been my inspiration and my joy The business part of my life as a priest is not something that I look forward to everyday. But I am very thank-ful for the opportunity that was given to me by our bishop to do this. Through the grace and the guidance of the Holy Spirit and through your prayers and wonderful support and love, somehow this part of my ministry has become easier. I must confess that it has been a very humbling experience to have been given this task of running a parish, a community of faith. I have gained a sense of confidence because of your trust and faith in me, though unworthy of this position. I have stumbled, failed and faltered many times as your pastor. I have hurt you but you have forgiven me. In the silence of your heart you have prayed for me. Although I have given many powerful and personal homilies through the course of my ministry, I know that many times my spirit was not there to lead you to that great moment of transformation and redemption. There were times when I presided great and there were many times when I presided poorly. I continue ask for your understand-ing and forgiveness. But we will continue to celebrate the Eucharist as great witnesses of the risen Christ----- to witness to the word, to proclaim the Gospel, to fulfill the mission of the Church. As your pastor and as your servant and co-worker, I am honored to be part of this journey. We must always accept the vision of faith, making the sacra-ment of the Eucharist a creative focus of the existence of the church. I could never forget that Sunday when I had my first thanksgiving mass at St. Leander’s Parish in San Lean-dro. My legs were shaking and I was sweating like crazy and probably with a heartbeat of 100 per minute. I was excited! Fifteen years later, I am still excited and still passionate about my priesthood. One thing I know! I learned more than I contributed. And I hope that in my little contribution----that I was able to make a small difference in your life of faith and the life of the church. Yes! It has been a wonderful journey! Please continue to pray for me! May God bless you always with his peace, love and life! Always grateful, Fr. Geoffrey
