~ NEWS & NOTES ~ ~ and so much more.....

Run to win. -1 Cor. 9:24 (CEB)

    Dear church,

The apostle Paul compared the Christian life to

running a race: only those who train hard, practiceself-discipline, and say yes when invited to join the race have a chance at win-

    ning .

On the first day of scout camp, all scouts and their leaders take a swim test to assess

their swimming ability. As I stood there with the other scouts and leaders of troop

29, gazing at the beautiful yet choppy waters of Crescent Lake, feeling the wind on

my face, and looking across the lake to the snow-clad peaks of the Cascade Range, I

figured I wasn t going to be spending much time at the waterfront, anyway ; so I kept

my shoes on and watched the scouts prepare to jump into the icy water. One of the other adult leaders tried to talk me into jumping in, but most of the

adults made the same choice I made, and I felt comfortable with my decision.

However, I soon realized that feeling comfortable wasn t why I came to camp. I

came for adventure, and to help 21 scouts from troop 29 experience adventure.

So at the last minute, I took my shoes off and jumped in. The cold water felt great (seriously!). However, the waves

kept splashing in my face, I ran out of breath, and had to stop before complet-

ing the swim test. (On another day, under calmer conditions, I would success-

    fully complete it.)

It didn t matter to me that I failed to complete the test the first time.Choosing adventure and action over complacency felt good, and I resolved

then and there to say yes! to every adventure opportunity that came my

    way

Who wants to canoe across the lake for an overnight campout under the

stars? Me! Who wants to lead scouts on a kayak trip down Marsh Creek? Me!

Who wants to hike to Fawn Lake? Me! And who wants to jump into the lake at

sunrise for the Polar Bear Swim when the air temperature is 38 degrees?

OK, I did say no to that last one. I m not that crazy. However, by saying yes to so many other adventure opportu-

nities, I had one of the best weeks of my life, and was able to help others do the same.

God calls upon us to step beyond our comfort zone, jump in, and say yes! Love does not sit back, but is active and

full of life. Love works hard, trains hard, and plays hard in order to win the race.

    Blessings,Pastor Danny
