ABOUT 700 LOCAL AND 100 FOREIGNEXHIBITORS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THISYEAR’S GHANA INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR.

We all live in Accra, but can we just imagine all we can findin our beautiful country, locally? Possibly, the Trade Fair willhave the answers !As for me, I’ve been very happy to find a lot of suppliers of rooftyles (for my house in Ada!), a very complete shop of lingerie(for me!), suppliers of children’s furnitures (for my spoiledkids!) and much much more !! This, plus the novelties of theforeign exhibitors coming to discover Ghana’s market !

The two-week fair on the theme,“NETWORKING TO UNLOCKGHANA’S TRADE POTENTIALS,” has created the platform for busi-ness opportunities for the exhibitors.

Speaking with the paper last Monday, the public relationsmanager of the Ghana Trade Fair Company, Mr Joe Welsing, said adequate preparations had been made for a successfulfair.Esther Ofori, chief executive officer of the Trade FairCompany, said that measures had been put in pace to ensureadequate security on the fair grounds. For the opening cere-mony were present many officials, the President and thedeputy ministry of trade and industry.

For many visitors, the fair is an opportunity todiscover many items available and made inGhana.

This fair gives the chances to many small busi-nesses to establish an excellent network withvarious partners.Since the first edition, ten yearago a long path has been followed, the budget forthe organizer has been multiplied by 5 and thereservation are booked at least six monthbefore the event.

For the ministry of trade and industry the tradefair is made to encourage any Ghanaian business tobecome as successful as possible.

paintingAmarkine Amarteifio, an artist and a researcheron Women, is convinced that Women are synony-mous to change. Each moment brings a new edi-tion of the women you know. In the light of thesehe advises men never to assume whenever deal-ing with women. It is against the nature of womento allow men to know them thoroughly. For them, mystery and magic are essential. A little depth ofdarkness is a necessary backdrop against whichtheir glory and charm must shine and show. A manwho desires to know everything about a womanmay soon realize he has knowledge too profoundto keep the bubble of his love alive. The face a woman shows to theworld may well depend on the phase her magic and mystery dictates.Using rich blues and its complements, Amarkine expresses theseideas in his painting. He uses the ancient feminine symbol... the Moon, and skillfully inter-sperses its phases with the faces of women. He attempts to freezethe flighty and transient moment of a women’s soul....

Indicating a typical man’s attempt to possess this lure!

Knowing what weknow about browshaping and othereye enhancing treat-ments, first timersare reluctant toeven give it a try asmuch as they wouldwant the effect. Nobody said going tothe dentist was aneasy thing to do butwhen you need togo, you need to go.Ok it’s not as badbut then when youreally want to makea statement withthe eyes, you needto put all that to theside and do whatneeds to be done. When you see the results of the pain, it’s funny howquickly you forget the pain...

The eyes are the windows to your soul.Well then how do you see yourself? It’s amazing to see the difference a brow reshaping can

make to your face. That said, not every brow shape isfor every one. You can’t see a brow shape on someoneand decide it’s going to look the same on you. There isa brow shape for the different facial shapes and onceyou choose your brow shape with this in mind, you’ll befine.Like I said, it makes a lot of difference so when youmake a mistake, it will be equally noticeable and it willtake an average of two weeks for it to grow back.Knowing you’ve got that long to live with it, you wouldwant the right thing done, wouldn’t you? Hope so.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE USE ABLADE to take off the unwanted hair. It will look goodinitially but when the hair starts to grow back, it willlook horrible. Reason? Because you did not pull thewhole hair strand out, what grows back after a shave isjust the rest of the strand, which is thick and stubby.Mind you when you shave, you don’t have the twoweeks for it to grow back; it grows back much quickerthan tweezing or waxing.

April 2006 15Catherine Appiah

Pulling out the hair completely gives the hair the chance to grow back as a freshstrand. This comes out with a narrow and soft tip, so that even when the hair hasgrown back and you don’t have time to have it redone, it doesn’t look horrible. And for those who are not so lucky, you get bumps because the hair doesn’t growback straight and coils up under the skin.

Moisturize your brow hair. It’s so easy to take care of your face and forget your browarea. Pay a little attention to it and you’ll get a natural shine, which gives you lessto worry about eventually.

How many of you really know aboutthe Capital city you live or work in?Where did it get its name? What does itmean? Imagine Accra 49 years ago, howdifferent is it comparing it to today? Iwonder if the development of the Capitalhas matched the expectation of thepeople living and working in Accra 49years ago.

These are just some of the questions Ifound myself asking, whilst watching theIndependence Day parade on TV. It mademe think about what I really know aboutAccra & Ghana as a whole. What havebeen some of the landmark events inthe past 49 years for the city ofAccra?

Finding information on Accra City, inAccra, has not been an easy task. Thereare too few public libraries in the Capital, possibly two only. Why is that? Do wenot like to read? How do we educateourselves about our history and promoteit to others, if we have so few librariesand resources to acquire information?

My only alternative to find theinformation to write this article meant Ihad to jump on the Internet and searchfor the information I wanted. This led tomy second dilemma. Most of theinformation I found from the sites werevery similar in content, and most of thepieces were written from the perspectiveof non-Ghanaians.

49YRS OF INDEPENDENCE?

April 2006 18

Page 19: 003 ENJOY Accra Magazine April 2006

Does this mean that Ghanaians are notwriting, or are unable to publish theirown literature? In another 49 years, whatwill people write and say about ourgeneration if we are not writing anddocumenting ourselves. In time to come ifthis trend continues will our history betruly accurate & independent? Thingsto think about, people!

Ghana’s big 50 is soon approaching andwill arrive at our doorstep in another 12months. The international community willhave all eyes on Ghana whilst we mark &celebrate this historical event.

So Enjoy Accra has decided with your help to do a monthly feature on the history of

Accra, that informs and educates aboutAccra City, it’s past, it’s future potential, and what that will mean for the peopleliving & working here.

If there is anybody out there reading thiswho has the answers to the questions Iasked earlier, or can make suggestions forinteresting stories, please let us know bycontacting us @ our email address placedat the bottom of this article.

Jump on board and let’s makehistory!

NEDERBURGHEALTH TIP OFTHE MONTH

The medical bene-fits of wine havebeen known sinceancient Egyptians

first mixed it withmouse dung to treat ear infections.

But it was Hippocrates who realized itsrecuperative powers when used in moderation.

“Wine is fit for man in a wonderful way, provided it is taken with good sense by thesick as well as the healthy”, he observed.

Two thousand years later, at least eight medicalstudies have suggested that a glass or two ofwine daily protects against heart disease.

The so-called French paradox has befuddled clini-cians for years. Compared with NorthAmericans, the French eat almost four timesmore butter and three times more lard, havehigher blood pressure and cholesterol, yet theyare 2.5 times less likely to die from a heart attack.

First, consumption of wine lowers the LDL or badcholesterol level, which is known to deposit in bloodvessel walls. Second, it increases HDL or good cho-lesterol, the naturally occurring scavengers of LDLmolecules. Third, it acts as an anti-coagulant, thereby helping to pre-vent the formation of clots. Winehas undoubted stress-relievingproperties, but its beneficial effects in this regard is difficult to quan-tify. Last, but not least, is theabundance of antioxidants con-tained in wine and it is these prop-erties that have aroused the mostinterest.

What is culture?“ The achievements of a nation, people or other social group”

OXFORD AMERICAN DICTIONARY

The youth of Ghana, I challenge you to be that social group thatinfluences Ghana’s national and cultural development.

You can study & educate yourselves whilst making MONEY from it.

IT TAKES CREATIVITY, YOUNGMINDS, NEW IDEAS, STRENGTH,DETERMINATION, SELF MOTIVA-TION, A WILLINGNESS TO LEARN,FOCUS, A MENTOR TO HELP GUIDEYOU, SUPPORT, PATIENCE, ATTEN-TION TO DETAIL, SHARING OFKNOWLEDGE...An example. Some people have a way with words that can make you thinkdeeply when you read or listen to them. What they have to say captivates you.

As I said earlier it takes new ideas... think creatively and make yourself somemoney like I just have, writing this article.

Either a cruise on the Volta lake orhiking on the highest mountain inGhana, Mountain Afadzato (afajato)2921ft is a rewarding experience. Thispeak is now a forest reserve and ishome to many species that werepreviously unknown: it has more than300 species of butterflies & mammals.

There are also beautiful waterfalls anda network of six caves with largecolonies of bats.

Another place of interest in the Voltaregion is the government rest house, built in the 17th century to serve thecolonial master on mount Amedzofe.

Locals believe that, during the SecondWorld War, the King of England, KingGeorge VI, father of Queen Elizabeth II,reigning Queen of Britain and head ofthe commonwealth, came to hide inthis bungalow to prevent his capture inthe event of Britain falling to theNazis.

A cruise to the Dodi Island on boardthe Dodi Princess boat will set thetone for the day. You will learn toappreciate the quite and sereneenvironment that greets you as youapproach the islands, and the smallfishing communities surrounding thelake, the biggest and largest manmadelake in the world.

INTERVIEW WITH SAM ADIKA,SOFTSHEEN.CARSON PROFESSIONALHAIR ACADEMY MANAGER :

Q : Sam, how do hair colors work in gener-al?A : Colors work by depositing dyes eitheron the surface (cuticle) or the inside (cor-tex) of the hair. Permanent colors work bydepositing dyes inside the hair.Q : How is Dark & Lovely Color Flash differ-ent?A : With Color Flash, a rich creamy dye isdeposited on the surface of the hair. Asthe dye does not go inside the hair shaft, itwill not traumatize the hair. Rather, itincreases the brightness of the hair andhighlighting of the shade.Q : Wow, that's great! So how is ColorFlash used? Can I use it at home?A : Color Flash is easy to apply and can beused in the comfort of your home. All youdo is follow four simple steps. 1. Shampoo hair prior to Color Flash appli-cation. Do not condition.2. Shake can and apply Color Flash byspreading all the hair color mousse evenlythroughout each section of hair.3. Leave in and wait between 20 to 30 min-utes.4. Pour a little warm water and massagegently. Rinse until water runs clear. Proceed with your styling option. You can also take your Color Flash to asalon for professional application.Q : Some of my girlfriends wear weavesand extensions; can they use Color Flashon them?A : Yes, Color Flash can be used onthose, especially the ones made ofhuman hair.Q : Will it beOK if I useColor Flash

same day as I relax my hair? I learnt onecan't use color same day as relaxer?A : Color Flash is a semi permanent haircolor that contains no ammonia and perox-ide so you can relax and color the sameday using Color Flash.Q : Can I use Color Flash on my highlight-ed hair?A : Yes. If hair has been previously high-lighted Color Flash will appear brighter andmore vibrant.Q : I have grey hair... Can I use Color Flash?A : Color Flash will appear bright andstrong on grey hair. It is advisable to deter-mine the percentage of grey. If you havemore than 50% grey, do a strand test tohave an idea of how color will turn outbefore proceeding.Q : How long does Color Flash last on thehair?A : Color Flash will not last as a permanenthair color but, Color Flash rich and creamyformula dyes will last between 6 to 8shampoos. Q : What if I want a longer lasting result?A : Then you will need a stronger product. You can try Dark & Lovely Permanent HairColor, but remember to wait two weeksbefore or after relaxing your hair. Dark &Lovely has an answer for all your needs.Color Flash for gentle but vibrant color.Dark & Lovely PermanentHair Color for a longlasting result and greatcoverage of grey hair.

why do they just keep on drib-

an interesting letter from a true patriot ofGhanian football.

Coach.. I am not a football expert like yourself, but even I can see, that your boys, I mean ourboys need to do less dribbling with the ball in their own half of the pitch, and let the ball dothe moving around the pitch. Our boys are great athletes and have natural dribbling ability,we all know that, so would it not make more sense, that when in training, the boys practicewhat they are NOT GOOD AT?

For example whilst training, why not make the boys play two touch football only.Four men in a square box 20ft X20ft marked on the floor. 3 against 1, three playerscollectively as a team have to keep the ball away from the single remaining player. The trickhere though is that the three players on the same team are only allowed to touch the ballTWICE inclusive of passing the ball to their teammate. The single remaining player in thecenter of the opposing trio tries to take away the ball using his feet only. He is not allowed tophysically touch them. If he is able to retrieve the ball, the person from whom he was able tostop from passing to his team mate, then has to be the person in the middle fighting for theball, and so on. This exercise must be done within the confines of the box marked on theground.

This form of training does two things, builds stamina and much needed team understandingamong the players. I believe this type of technical exercise will help the boys support eachother better on the playing field, but as I said at the beginning of this letter I am not an expertso I am not sure you will take this letter seriously if it ever reaches you anyway, but thepeople who publish this magazine thought it may do so when I asked them if I could publishthis letter and they said yes, so I did.

Please lets do the right thing by our boys and give them all the right support.

PS. This letter was inspired by the friendly match between Ghana and Mexico,Thursday 2nd 2006.

have been used for over a century to res-tore physical and psychological health.

Science has recognised the importantrole light plays in regulating the body’s

biological clock, which controlshormone production, sleep andbehavioural patterns. When lightenters the eye, it stimulates nerveimpulses to the hypothalamus, part of the brain responsible formood, appetite, sleep, tempera-ture and sex drive. These neu-ral impulses travel to thepineal gland in the brain, which regulateshormonal balance. These same impulses are sti-mulated by colour; the physio-logical effects of colour onthe human body (first of allmoods) are well recognisedaccording to colour therapytheory.

Orange is joy, energy

Yellow is detachment, intellect

Pink is love, life

Green is balance/equilibrium,harmony and sympathy

Turquoise is immunity

Blue is relaxing, religious inspiration

Violet is dignity, self-respect, spirituality

Colour is part of everyday life.It will affect all of the senses, sight, touch, taste and even hearing. It can be emotional, exci-ting, stimulating, calming, soothing. Colour arousesmany feelings and memories, good and bad, it canmake us happy and sad. It is so much part of our dailylives, that often we don’t see it. Or aware of the effect itcan have on our moods and our interaction with our sur-roundings.Colour is wonderful, without it, life as we know it would bedrab and dreary.

Colour is life, from the environment to clothes and makeup. Some people react very badly when they are in a certain colou-red atmosphere. Others, on the contrary, are deeply attached toa favourite colour, giving it a beneficial connotation. Becausecolour can have both a positive and negative effect, colour thera-

pies have been acknowledged as part of alternative healing formany generations.

So you see, we don't just notice colours, wefeel them. Mentally, physically, emotionallyand spiritually, they empower us. Dawn todusk, they rule our world, transformingnature's energy into personal realisation,

having an extremely powerful influenceupon all our minds and emotions.

Some colours are warming; red, orange and yellow, some

are cooling; blue violetand gentian, whilegreen is neutral;the middle orbalancingcolour.

Colours of the new surroundings we findourselves in often impact first impressions.Eventually these colours become part of ourmemories. If it was a colour that we found attrac-tive, the chances are that we would have beenrelaxed and happy and may have overlooked other lessdesirable aspects of the new surroundings.

The first impressions a new client has when she walksinto your clinic will be long lasting and will determine whe-ther or not she returns for a second appointment. Makecolour part of that first impression. Look around your recep-tion area, is it welcoming with the warmth of colour?

What about you, do you have your lipstick on? Are your uni-forms attractive and colourful? Is the treatment room linen arestful colour? Do you have fresh flowers, aromatic candlesand oil diffusers. Believe it or not, but fragrance is part of thememory of colour, and will have as equally as big an impact onthe senses.

A PRACTICAL ASPECT OF THE APPLICATION OF COLOUR IN SALONUsing coloured gels over light boxes is a great

way to give a room-coloured ambience, which canbe changed for each mood. These have been avai-

lable for some time now, but are having a renais-sance and once more become readily available

from beauty therapy suppliers. The use of coloured gels with a light boxremoves the problem of having your recep-tion or treatment rooms painted in coloursthat will date and not be appealing to all. They are inexpensive and easily maintai-ned. The coloured gels are also easilyobtained from a lighting shop or supplierof equipment to the entertainment indus-try. One excellent on-line source iswww.colourtheapyhealing.com

Youwill also need to reconsider your time table. Yourwork contract, since your meeting is probably doneat your place of work. Your friend: Leo.
