My dear friends

Just as every year, we remember our mothers. For many people, Mothers Day is only celebrated in April or May. Well that is not very true as the celebrations vary from country to country and often last throughout the year. Take note of these dates and remember the gifts as you wish all the mothers you know a happy day.

Easter is here with us and so are Easter Eggs. Intrigued by this ritual we seek some explanations for you; It is fun to do and the chocolate eggs are delicious but don’t over indulge as you celebrate Easter in Accra, Cape Coast, Tamale or even in the Kwahu mountains

In this edition we bring you the Lizzie Sport Complex, the new ultra modern sports centre with a football pitch, swimming pool, hi-tech gym, restaurants and shops built by our own Marcel Odenke Desailly– 1998 FIFA World Cup Winner.

The Sports Complex is dedicated to Marcel Desailly’s late mother Mrs. Elisabeth Addy Desailly affectionately called Lizzy. The towering Sports Complex hosted Les Elephants with top football greats such as Didier Drogba, Romaric and Anthony Baffoe (PFAG) to a training session before their CAN qualifiers match against Benin.

History was made at the Wembley Stadium when the Black Stars met their English counterparts on March 29; to immortalize this game Yaw Ampofo Ankrah brings you a behind the scenes view of the game.

Africa’s integration as a commercial hub is on course with The West African Trade Hub and the USAID. Accra saw the hosting of the 5th Annual international Shea conference.

French cuisine has become a World Heritage item since November 17, 2010, French Chef Guillut of Elle & Vire was at the Golden Tulip to treat us to some French delicacies. ENJOY YOUR MEAL !!!!!!!!!!!

he Easter Bunny is a character depicted as a dressed rabbit that brings baskets filled with coloured eggs, candy

and sometimes toys to the homes of children on the night before Easter.

The Easter Bunny is Santa Claus's counterpart as they both bring gifts to children on the night before their respective holiday.

"Omne vivum ex ovo means "all life comes from an egg". The egg has been a symbol of creation for hundreds of years. In Pagan times the egg represented the rebirth of the Earth. With the emergence of Spring, the Earth burst forth and was reborn, just as an egg bursts forth with new life.

Traditionally, easter comes from Eostre a celebration of the goddess of Spring, to whom the month of April was dedicated. With the coming of Christianity, the Easter egg became a religious symbol. The egg changed from representing nature’s rebirth to the rebirth of man. The hatching Easter chick became a symbol of the tomb from which Jesus emerged.

At the Passover Seder, a hard-boiled egg dipped in salt water symbolizes both new life, and the Passover sacrifice offered at the Temple in Jerusalem.

In Christian times, the egg was a symbol of new life just as a chick might hatch from the egg. In medieval Europe, eggs were forbidden during Lent and during the strict Lenten fast of forty days no eggs were eaten. It was traditional to use up all the eggs in the house before Lent began, which established the tradition of Pancake Day.

It was during Easter that the consumption of eggs resumed after the strict Lenten fast. Eggs were thus a mainstay of Easter meals, and a prized Easter gift for children and servants.

The colouring of eggs is an established art, and eggs are often dyed, painted, and otherwise decorated. Eggs were also used in various holiday games: parents would hide eggs for children to find, and children would roll eggs down hills. The ubiquitous jelly egg or jellybean is hidden by the Easter Bunny, for children to find on Easter morning. An Easter egg hunt is a common festive activity, where eggs are hidden outdoors (or indoors if in bad weather) for children to run around and find.

Peter Carl Faberge, a well-known goldsmith, made the first chocolate eggs in Europe during the 19th century; He created the most famous decorated Easter eggs for the Russian Czar Alexander as a special Easter gift for his wife. These Faberge eggs had an outside shell of platinum and enameled white, which opened to reveal a smaller gold egg. The egg then opened to show a golden chicken and a jeweled replica of the Imperial crown. Fifty-seven of these eggs were made in all. Bet you never thought that Easter eggs had so much history. Be good and an Easter Bunny might just visit you. It’s Easter, go egg hunting or re-evaluate your New Year resolutions and be reborn.

Ideas for making easter eggsYou will need

• Hard boiled egg(s) with the shell on • Vinegar (plain white)• Small bowls, cups or empty margarine containers• Water• Food colouring

Directions:

• Fill containers about 1/2 to 2/3 full of water. • I like using cups because it's the most frugal • Add 1 tsp. of vinegar (for every 1 cup of water). • Add drops of food color until you're happy with the hue. (I usually get happy with the hue and then add 2 more drops... I find that tends to make the eggs the color I was originally happy with). • Put hard boiled eggs in the cups • Leave to dry. Wipe with vegetable oil (with paper towel or a rag) to make a glossier egg.

NOTE: Always cover work surface with newspaper so the dye doesn't get on your table. If it does get on furniture, wipe it off with a rag immediately.


n December 2010, the Head of the International Division of the Societe Generale Group, Jean-Louis Mattei came to

Ghana for a two day visit. During his visit courtesy calls were made on the Vice President, the Minister of Finance and the French Ambassador. A Media Forum was held at which the Bank signed an Ariz Agreement with AFD Proparco. A cocktail was held in honour of Mr Jean-Louis Mattei. The event bid farewell to Mr Alain Bellissard, outgoing Managing Director and also welcomed Mr Gilbert Hie the incoming Managing Director of SG-SSB.

The key reason for Mr Mattei’s visit was the signing of the AFD Agreement. SG-SSB Limited, a leading Bank in Ghana and the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD), the French development finance institution, executed three credit facility agreements worth GHs10 Million, GHs3 Million and GHs500,000 (Euros 250,000) respectively.

The AFD means of private sector financing is undertaken along with its subsidiary Proparco, by extending credit to local commercial banks and other financial institutions for onward lending to private oriented companies who require resources for expansion, restructuring and the establishment of new projects. The ARIZ Agreement is an AFD guarantee scheme to facilitate the financing of Small Medium Scale Enterprises (“SMEs”) in which the Bank acts as the credit institution that grants loans to SMEs. AFD would then act as the guarantor

and the purpose of the guarantee is to facilitate access to seed and development capital financing through medium and long term loans and through the greater involvement of private banks in financing SMEs. Two types of ARIZ guarantees are made available by AFD: a case by case or individual guarantee and a portfolio guarantee.

As the SME segment is generally considered more risky by the bank, it is not well served by the banking sector or the micro finance institutions. Therefore AFD will support SG-SSB Limited with a grant of Euros 250,000 to finance market studies, enhancement and adaptation of credit assessment processes for SMEs, training of SME officers, and so forth so that SG-SSB Limited could provide new financing solutions to those SMEs.

Alain Bellissard was appointed MD of SG-SSB on the 1 November 2006 after five years as head of SGBC (SG Subsidiary in Cameroon) During these four years profits increased after tax from 9,90 million GHS in 2006 to 19.37 million GHS in 2010. As per Bank of Ghana regulations, he also increased the stated capital of the bank from 7 to 62.4 million GHS.

He engaged the bank in a major IT system migration of its core banking allowing the bank to provide better quality of services to its customers. He has also initiated the construction of a new headquarters in Ringway which should be completed in 2013.

Anyone who disagrees should go back and review the articles, analysis previews, documentaries and sparkling reviews that followed the historic encounter. Gabriel Eklou was born in Accra, Ghana but spent most of his childhood in

Togo and Benin, where he had his education and was later trained to be an Accountant.

He started painting as a child, although self-taught, he benefited from having a number of people in his life who encouraged and reinforced his natural talent. He became a full time artists in 1996.

Eklou’s paintings captures the symbolic interpretation of the African community life. He is known for his elongated, tapered and elegant figures, symbolic landscapes like his Baobab trees and Huts, and his colours diverse shades of pastels mostly earth tones.

His paintings have been exhibited worldwide, and they can now be found in private and corporate collections.

U.K...Mother's Day is more popularly known as Mothering Sunday. Jarvis.In 1914, Congress passed a resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, "a public expression of love and reverence for the mothers of our country." • 10 cups assorted fresh fruit, such as watermelon, honeydew, papaya, pineapple, mango, strawberries, kiwies, bananas, peaches and seedless red grapes, wash and cut into bite-size pieces• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice• 1 lime, juiced (about 1/4 cup)

DirectionsBring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the noodles and cook as the label directs; drain and rinse with cold water.

Meanwhile, whisk the lime juice, fish sauce, brown sugar, garlic, chili sauce and 1/3 cup water in a medium bowl. Transfer 1/4 cup of the marinade to another bowl and toss with the shrimp. Toss another 1/4 cup marinade with the asparagus and mushrooms in a third bowl. Let the shrimp and vegetables marinate 10 minutes at room temperature. Toss the noodles with the remaining marinade.

he Shea industry provides livelihood for thousands of Ghanaians and many more people across the sub-region.

Over the last decade, the Shea Industry has grown by over 1,100 percent and the Shea nuts and butter exports rose from $ 10Million at the beginning of the millennium to over $120 Million in 2010.

The industry is a critical source of livelihood to many women in the Northern parts of Ghana and across Africa. It is estimated that over 4 million women sustain their livelihood by collecting the nuts which is then processed to Shea Stearin or Olein- an essential component of the confectionary and cosmetics industry.

The annual Shea conference brought together hundreds of shareholders from around the World who represent various aspects of the Shea Industry.

This year’s event was held by Ghana, and it is the fifth in the series of this international annual event. The event was held at the La Palm Royal hotel, and it was preceded by a two day training session for companies involved in Shea exportation.

The conference lived to its billing of bringing the who’s who of the Shea industry, from the women groups that collect Shea nuts to the major buyers of nuts and butter. In attendance were the civil society groups, public sector agencies, service providers, financial institutions as well as leading international Shea buyers.

H.E the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana as well as H.E Teitelbaum, ambassador of the United States of America among other dignitaries graced the occasion.

n 1977, Jerry Mander, a former advertising executive, published Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television.

In the book, Mander reveals how the television networks and advertisers use this pervasive video medium for sales and a lot more.

Mander attacks not only the contents of the television images, but the effects television has on the human mind and body. His discussion includes: 1. The induction of alpha waves, a hypnotizing effect that a motionless mind enters; 2. How viewers often regard what they see on television as real even though the programmes are filled with quick camera switches, rapid image movement, computer generated objects, computer generated morphing and other technical events; 3. The placement of artificial images into our mind's eye; and 4. The effects that large amounts of television viewing have on children and the onset of attention deficit disorder.

"If we take the word need to mean something basic to human survival -- food, shelter, clothing; or basic to human contentment -- peace, love, safety, companionship, intimacy, a sense of fulfillment; these will be sought and found by people whether or not there is advertising," Mander writes.

Television is promoting a lifestyle. Virtual reality is being promoted in order to gain additional revenue. Television programs are put together with the conscious attitude of promoting consumerism

Television watching is not active. It is passive. Both the viewer's mind and body do not react, and cannot react. Mander calls television imagery a form of sleep teaching.

One researcher interviewed by Mander explains: "The horror of television is that the information goes in, but we don't react to it. It goes right into our memory pool and perhaps we react to it later but we don't know what we're reacting to. When you watch

television, you are training yourself not to react and so later on, you're doing things without knowing why you're doing them or where they came from."

Mander published Four Arguments over thirty years ago. I believe his main theme then (and the one I hope you are getting from this article), is that advertisers and networks don't want the viewers to think. They want them to just be good consumers and spend money on their products.

Mander goes into detail discussing the physical effects television viewing has on living things. One such observation is quite revealing.

A plant was exposed to normal television program four hours daily for twelve weeks. During the first three weeks, the roots of the plant began to grow out of the soil. After nine weeks, none of the roots was in the soil. Turn off the television! Try it you might like it.

n acute bacterial infection, cholera causes severe diarrhoea and can lead to life threatening dehydration. Cholera is

rare in industrialized nations but if you're travelling to or live in parts of Africa, Latin America or Asia, where epidemic cholera is present, or areas where cholera is endemic, such as parts of South America, India and the Middle East, you must learn how to prevent contracting the infection.

After they are consumed in infected water and food, whatever cholera bacteria survive the harsh acidic environment of the stomach set up shop in the small intestine, where they reproduce rapidly and create a toxin that causes watery diarrhoea.

Some people infected by cholera have few or no symptoms, but others react more severely. Diarrhoea is the disease's hallmark, and may be accompanied by vomiting and leg cramps. Only 5 percent of people who get cholera will end up with the most severe symptoms. For those unfortunate few, rehydration is vital, but because the intestines' ability to absorb fluids is not affected, rehydration can be done orally rather than intravenously.

Instructions1. Drink only water that you know is boiled, chlorine or iodine treated. Tea and coffee must contain this same treated water. Soft drinks and other carbonated bottled drinks are good options as long as you avoid ice.

2. Eat foods and vegetables, which are cooked thoroughly and still hot. Eat only fruit you peeled yourself. Avoid raw, uncooked salads and any food that has been washed with untreated water.

3. Stay away from raw or undercooked fish or seafood. Consume food and drink from restaurants or hotels. Try to be careful and avoid buying from street vendors.

Tips & Warnings & Defensive Measures

• Cholera is not easily transmittable, so casual contact with someone infected is not risky.• "Boil it, cook it, peel it or forget it," is a common phrase used to remember how to prevent such bacterial infections in foreign countries with lesser sanitation and water systems.• The Centre for Disease Control doesn't recommend cholera vaccines. Dukoral, a recently developed oral vaccine, is available in some countries, not in the United States.• You should wash your hands thoroughly and often to help avoid ingesting and spreading V. cholerae.• Make sensible choices when eating and drinking in a foreign country (The cholera bacterium spreads easily, so being careful about what you eat and drink is your best defense against it.
