My Friends,

It is said that it is only by being strong that can we achieve anything. This is so true. Humans have through sheer strength and resilience built some of the most impressive architectural structures in history. People have invented equipment and machines capable of moving Earth’s element, remodelling them and changing them from their natural state into beautiful edifices.

Such machines and equipment are a common sight in Ghana today as we all see the great age of reconstruction underway. We invite you to join Alain as he explores the rough tough world of those providing the equipment for this infrastructural development. Welcome to the world of CFAO Equipment Ghana Limited.

Coincidentally as we were exploring these machines, along came OROPA Estates Limited with an invitation to visit their new estate in Tema. Why not celebrate Father’s Day by buying

daddy a new house?

One cannot talk about construction, real estate and building without considering finance and insurance. SG-SSB and Allianz Insurance are here to help you with your finance and insurance needs and we take a look at what they have to offer. When you have built, financed and moved into your new home, why not consult Ghana Contemporary to find out what to hang on your walls. This month we view the work of the multi talented artist, Serge Attukwei Clottey.

We bring you details of the Cowbell National Cycling Tour 2013, from the organisers, Promasidor Ghana Limited. The race runs from the 27th of May to 8th June 2013.

FAthERS are wonderful people

Fathers are wonderful people Too little

u n d e r s t o o d , And we do not

sing their praises As often as we should... For, somehow, Father seems to be The

man who pays the bills, While Mother binds up little hurts And

nurses all our ills... And Father struggles daily To live up to

“HIS IMAGE” As protector and provider And “hero or the scrimmage”... And perhaps that

is the reason We sometimes get the notion, That Fathers are not subject To the thing we call emotion,

But if you look inside Dad’s heart, Where no one else can see You’ll find he’s sentimental And as “soft” as he

can be... But he’s so busy every day In the grueling race of life, He leaves the sentimental stuff To his

partner and his wife... But Fathers are just WONDERFUL In a million different ways, And they merit loving compliments

And accolade of praise, For the only reason Dad aspires To fortune and success Is to make the family proud of him And to bring them happiness... And like OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, He’s a guardian and a guide, Someone that we can count on To be ALWAYS ON OUR SIDE.

Israel Marks 65thNational dayCelebrations in accra

he Embassy of Israel in Accra marked the 65th Independence Day of the State of Israel with

a celebration held at the residence of the Israeli ambassador, Her Excellency Madam Sharon Bar-Li. The celebration coincided with the second anniversary of the re-opening of the Israeli embassy in Accra after 38 years of closure.

In her address, Her Excellency Sharon Bar-Li praised the relationship between the people of Ghana and Israel, describing it as a long standing partnership and friendship, recalling how Ghana was the first African country to establish diplomatic relations with the State of Israel.

According to the ambassador, Israeli businessmen describe Ghana as a preferred destination for business and she revealed plans

to construct a 600-bed hospital facility at the University of Ghana with Israeli Bank Financing.

The honourable minister of transport, Dzifa Attivor, in an address to mark the occasion, requested that the embassy operate a fully-functioning visa section to facilitate the processing of visas for Ghanaians travelling to Israel. She further reiterated the government’s commitment to the co-operation between the two countries.

A happy Yom Ha’atzmaut.

Aries 21/3-20/04 Taurus 21/4-21/05 Gemini 22/5-21/06

May is a money month for you, dear Aries, but as it progresses, it’s more about learning and connecting. You can now take charge of your finances and generate new ideas regarding how to spend wisely. It’s best to wait until after the 9th before taking action, when any anxieties about what you really want to do lift, but do pay attention to important advice or newfound knowledge on the 7th. Independent or competitive (not so much cooperative) activities are highly favored. Business demands are strong all year, but as May progresses, you’re entering a stage in which there is much less emphasis on the outer world and more on what’s going on inside. The 24-28 can point to a speaking engagement, an unveiling or culmination of a recent work-in-progress, or a publishing of your work. It’s time to diversify and meet a variety of people - to come out of your shell. Your success depends heavily on others now. A nice bonus - financial or possibly romantic - can come your way on the 28th.

As the month begins, you are at once busy peacemaking and building bridges with others and tending to your personal needs, dear Taurus. However, by the 9-10, you may be digging in your heels and pursuing your own desires. Your own needs become critical, and if you’re not getting what you want, you’re likely to take a stand now. Generally speaking, however, things are playing in your favor. With Mars in your sign all month, your independence and freedom are especially important to you. Your desire nature is very powerful in May. You may need to tone it down a little, but if you use this period well, you’ll have all the courage necessary to make your dreams happen. A payout or issue of debt figures strongly in the last week of the month. There could be a significant gift or bonus. You might also reach a turning point in a partnership, and a decision about whether to make it official and merge your resources can be a pressing matter. Some of you are inclined to indulge yourself with a big purchase.

The first few weeks of May tend to be quiet for you, dear Gemini,, at least on the surface of things. The state of your inner world, on the other hand, is especially active and at times chaotic. Try to treat this period as a time for gathering your energies and closing important projects, relationships, or situations. Your mental energies are quickened from the 15-31 while Mercury is in your sign, favoring any task that involves getting your point across effectively! Your romantic life becomes considerably more straightforward after the 9th, or at least your wants and desires from romance is less complicated. A disappointment around the 13th can eventually lead to a breakthrough in the last week of the month. There can be some fuss about money owing or funding around the 20th, but shortly after this, you’re feeling more in your natural element. Be cool around the 24th, when emotions can be wacky and relationship drama is likely. Jupiter will not be in your sign for much longer (until June 25th), so take advantage of any opportunities that this happy planet provides you. This month, it’s likely to be around the 26-28, when you are attracting both people and positive circumstances into your life.

This Month Gemini

Page 41: Enjoy Accra Mag No 79

accounts and collecting money owed, dear Libra, although the going may not always be easy. Finances are a large focus for you, but so is intimacy. Relationships can be tricky, especially if you focus too intensely on problem areas, which is a real tendency. Expanding your personal resources is especially important to you now, and so is taking a few risks and enjoying your bounty! It can be challenging to accommodate both needs at once. A loan, bonus, refund, or mortgage may come through, and a partner, if applicable, might enjoy a pay raise. Do your best not to over-think around the 24th, and be careful what you allow yourself to believe, as others are not giving you the full story.

This is a big year for you, dear Scorpio, and this month, other people in your life, and particularly those closest to you, have much to show you about the direction you need to take. This may not be explicit, and in fact can come through your own intuition when faced with people’s actions, but the message will nevertheless be clear if you choose to listen to it. From the 9th forward, relationships are changing. New energy is brought to a partnership, or might even bring a new partnership into your life. This is a time for recognizing how important a partner is in your life. After a Lunar Eclipse in your sign in April, and with Saturn’s ongoing transit of Scorpio, you may have been feeling isolated or unsupported recently. May is a time for repairing your relationships and for reminders of your need for closeness. The 16-20 can be challenging when it comes to juggling mundane tasks in your daily life. It’s difficult to rely on others at work, and even to count on your own schedule.

While work and mundane matters take center stage in the first few weeks of May, social matters begin to come into focus from the 9th. Attention to detail on the job and around the home is important this month, even if your mind is wandering. Organizing the little things will go a long way towards a stronger sense of accomplishment. You can work longer hours than usual, or push harder in health and fitness routines. While the Solar Eclipse on the 9th can bring new energy into your daily routines, and new work or work projects altogether for some of you, it can also temporarily drain you if you are pushing yourself beyond your limits. There can be some challenges with money (and love) around the 20th, when an ongoing problem resurfaces. A Lunar Eclipse occurs in your sign on the 24th, and this can bring a personal or relationship to a head. This can point to a significant culmination in your life, as it is the last in a series of eclipses in Sagittarius and your opposing sign, Gemini, that began December 2010. apricorn

Libra 24/9-23/10 Capricorn 22/12-20/01Cancer 22/6-23/07

A lively agenda is in store for you in the first few weeks of the month, dear Cancer. You are in demand and highly stimulated. New beginnings on the social front are in order, and your social life is about to become very busy. This is a good time to join groups or associations that interest you, but be careful not to overdo it, as later this month, you’re in need of extra privacy and rest. People around you, particularly a partner, parent, or people at work, can be cantankerous on the 20th and in the days surrounding it. Changes are necessary, but the route to peace is unlikely to be clear at the moment. From the 9th, although friends continue to seek you out, romantic relationships can become confusing or complicated. At times, particularly in the last week of the month, you might actually enjoy the complications.

Others continue to take notice of you more than usual in May, dear Leo, and it’s time to show them what you can do! Watch for distinct opportunities to advance your career interests or improve your social standing in the first few weeks of the month. There can be a new beginning of sorts happening on the career front. There can be an important culmination of a work or home matter. Some of you will enjoy increased recognition, an award, or even a promotion. Around the 20th, energy shifts towards “happiness” goals rather than professional ones. There can be some frustration at this time, however, with your ability to count on others as well as the demands of a difficult schedule. Emotions run very high around the Lunar Eclipse on the 24th. Romance can be exhilarating at this time, but do watch for illusions, which can have you see-sawing up and down.

An adventurous spirit continues to grab hold of you in the first weeks of May, dear Virgo, with a nice collection of cosmic bodies in your solar ninth house. This stimulates your need to break out of a rut or a routine. It’s a good time to schedule a vacation, if possible, or to leave your weekends free for out of the ordinary activities or mini-getaways. Your normally keen attention to details is somewhat lacking this month, not due to inability but because of emotional orientation. Educational or travel opportunities can present themselves. Some of you could get published. Your social life is pleasant and easygoing, but below the surface of matters, your passions are stirred and hard to deny. There can be some tensions regarding an intimate relationship, the distribution or sharing of money, attention to children, or power dynamics in a close relationship. This month favors promotion of all kinds, group activities, making important contacts, and venturing beyond your normal routine. This is a month for settling outstanding

Pleasure, love, and creative expression continue to figure strongly in your life this month, dear Capricorn. Romantic relationships can be stimulating and possibly over-stimulating at times. This is not the time to make long-term commitments, but if you resolve to enjoy yourself in the moment, this can be a spirit-feeding, pleasurable time in your life. The Solar Eclipse on the 9th can affect you in a number of different ways, as it occurs in your sector of romance, hobbies, creativity, and children. This eclipse acts to usher in change and new beginnings in one or more of these areas, and your life may feel as if it’s been turned upside down, likely in a very positive way. An ongoing issue with personal freedom resurfaces the 16-20. Family relations or home conditions can be tricky at this time. The Lunar Eclipse on the 24th illuminates a private matter - something that has been left unresolved and now needs settling.

Home and family life are in strong focus this month, dear Aquarius. The domestic life is busy, and it’s a strong time for home projects as well as for strengthening ties with those closest to you, particularly on the 4-5 and 11-12. Even so, changes in your family dynamic or home life are necessary, and may be a long time coming, as a Solar Eclipse occurs on the 9th and brings powerful energy for new beginnings in your personal life. Watch for temper tantrums or making angry or too-revealing statements around the 16-20, when you’re inclined to speak before you think about the consequences. Your romantic life begins to assume more importance as May progresses, and while there can be some social drama in your life now, for the most part you’re likely to have a good time. The last week of May presents a favorable period for announcing or showing your creative work. It can mark an important culmination or turning point in a friendship.

For many of you, career and/or family matters have been unsettled or evolving in the past couple of years, as necessary changes have been taking place that serve to nudge you into a new and improved direction, dear Pisces. This month, you receive the final cosmic push towards your new beginnings. The Lunar Eclipse on the 24th can bring recognition or the culmination of an important project. May begins with a busy, sometimes maddening pace that can reach an overwhelming point around the Solar Eclipse on the 9th. You are reaching out to others and enjoying the connections you’re making, and many of you are all fired up over a new or renewed personal interest. Chores and errands can be excessive, and you might have to deal with transportation problems and communication breakdowns on top of it all.

oesn’t time fly? Its already May and here in Accra that means rain. Tropical rain is a force of nature that nourishes this beautiful country but it can also be an obstacle that stops us in our tracks and gives us space to reflect. Often

we tend to get on with our everyday lives without stopping and looking at our life and our environment. Sometimes It’s important to leave the hustle and bustle behind. I chose to take a stroll on a beach and was horrified to find not a white sandy beach but kilometres of rubbish. This was a rural beach. In Accra over 2,500 tonnes of waste is generated daily, but only 60%, is collected. The remainder, of which the majority is plastic, is left uncollected causing various environmental and health problems.

Art is a powerful tool that can draw attention to alarming issues like this. Ghana is home to a few forward thinking artists who also care about their country and environment and are creating artwork with a meaning. In this case, Serge Attukwei Clottely.

Ghana Contemporary caught up with this visionary to learn how environmental art comes into being and what is its social impact.

LeeniInterviews Serge Attukwei Clottey

Leeni: Tell us Enjoy Accra readers about you - Serge Attukwei Clottey. You are a painter, photographer, video artist, filmmaker and model. What makes you tick what messages do you want your art to convey?

Serge: My recent mixed media are consumed with an elegant grandeur in which personal, political, history, slave trade economies, thread through stories and myths of political struggle and human rights. The visual displays create an installation of sculptures, found objects, photography, film and a series of on-site live performances that engages. I feel strongly that art in public space demonstrates how innovation can be used to solve community problems such as improper sewage systems, unemployment and equal access to education. Through recycling workshops, professional art training, fashion shows and the employment of local residents in festivals or art therapy workshops,

art supports the development of creative responses by community members to their everyday concerns.

Ghanaian art is beginning to gain recognition, it should not be tossed into some odd sub-category, but be acknowledged instead for its level of class, sophistication, and growing appeal.

Leeni: You are young but you have accomplished a lot including a museum show in Amsterdam, a study period in Brazil, your own arts foundation and co-hosting a film festival. Can you describe what you enjoy most and what it is like to be young artist?

Serge: The arts, both performing and visual, are part of my humanity. Different from the sciences, which are predictable and governed by laws of nature, the arts provide me a variety of ways to express my creativity.

ARt & CultuRE

The arts can be seen as a reflection of a society, rather than driven by it. Many times in history, artists have been able to express ideas that were not acceptable in their society. Few Ghanaian artists have used their art to criticize their world - Kofi Setorji, El Anatsui, Bernard Akoi- Jackson, Tei Huagie and including myself to name just a few.

Leeni: You are a representative of a new wave of Ghanaian innovative conceptual artists. How do you intend to shape the art scene in Ghana?

Serge: I wanted to create art that represents the anguish that accompanies our planet’s problems. People do not realize how their own suffering is tied to the environment: to their long trip to fetch water, or their discomfort under the heat when the streets have no trees. Some parts of Africa

are among the driest countries on the planet and residents in the places face some of the most detrimental consequences from climate change. Yet the government does nothing, so I have taken it upon myself to educate through art.

Global warming is not a major concern in Ghana, and it is difficult to win support or an audience. The government does not want to fund my criticism of its policies. Children are not educated about global warming in school, and they are not inclined to take action on the issue. The burden falls upon me to make my art accessible and actively seek engagement. I create sculptures that are appealing to people of all walks of life. My work is appropriate for the high art world, but it also draws in the locals of Ghana who rarely interact with art yet whom the issues affect.

Leeni: Art is universally one of the most powerful tools of commentary on social, political and environmental issues. How do you see yourself contributing to environmental issues by using recycled materials and pieces of waste? How do you create aesthetically beautiful or functional objects out of them?

Serge: Every day in Ghana the streets are filled with children carrying yellow buckets on their heads, on their way to collect water. Trees lining the streets are cut down so that trucks carrying large loads can pass by. I’ve known for some time that global warming was an issue but I wasn’t particularly concerned. When I learned how global warming is an urgent problem that affects everyone and I decided to spread the message with my art. I returned to my

studio to make sculptures out of wood, recycled materials, and the yellow plastic buckets people use in Ghana to collect water from the nearest fountain.

Leeni: What can Ghanaians do to ensure that matters of environmental problems are being addressed? Is there an awareness of climate change or attempts of recycling and how do you personally apply your art to campaign about these issues?

Serge: I create multi-dimensional sculptures with a variety of shapes and materials that I hope appeal to people of all walks of life. My work is appropriate for the high art world, but it also draws in the locals of Ghana. My work is so radical for my community that it has even damaged some of my family ties. My father, Seth Clottey, is a famous Ghanaian painter who is known for his scenes of women and markets, disapproved of my work on climate change.

Not only is the subject of my work a challenge, the form is too. The art world in Ghana is thriving, but it is centred on traditional paintings like those of my father. There is not much of a space for contemporary art, especially not abstract sculptures on climate change. I have had my work displayed in the U.K, but in my own country, the gallery owners do not seem to be interested. I have to make people interested. I do not just display my work at galleries. I go out onto the street corners of slums to talk to the youth who do not receive education on global warming. I engage them with my art and invite them to my studio. It is difficult to instill passion for a subject people have not been taught to care about. The art thus acts as a point of connection that leads to dialogue and then action.

Leeni: Tell us your about your future vision, dreams or goals and why art makes the world a better place.

Serge: Attukwei Art Foundation (AAF) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) existing in the Greater Accra region of Ghana as a charity. Using both educational and social approaches, AAF is fostered by the belief that every child should experience art. We currently focus on schools lacking in funds, urban slums and street children to find a means of expressing themselves through art. We wish not only to teach these children about the world itself, but also how to play an active role in society focused on bettering the nation.

Our passion for art has influenced our desire to start a foundation that reaches out to underprivileged children allowing them to experience the wonders of art and learn about what it can do to help them and improve their lot. e

“I do not just display my work at galleries. I go out onto

the street corners of slums to talk to the youth who do not receive education on global warming. I engage

them with my art and invite them to my studio.”

Directions : • Run the scallops under some cool water and then pat dry with a paper towel. Season them with a little sea salt.

• Zest the orange and then finely chop the zest. Squeeze the juice and remove the seeds.

• Combine the zest, concentrate and fresh juice with soy sauce and rice vinegar. Set aside.

• In a small, heavy-based pot, stir the water and sugar together. Bring to a boil and continue to cook until the sugar caramelizes. You will have to gradually turn the heat down as you cook. This process will take about 15 minutes.

• Every 3 minutes or so, dip a pastry brush in cool water and brush the insides of the pot. This helps to stop the sugar from hardening up the sides.

• Cook the mixture until just before burning point. You will see a little smoke. Remove pot from heat immediately. Place a sieve over the pot and pour the red wine into the caramel. Let it cool and add the zest, concentrate, fresh juice, soy sauce and vinegar. Stir to combine and then set aside.

• Heat the oil in a fry-pan over a medium-high heat until the oil starts to swirl and smoke very slightly. The pan has to be really hot to sear the scallops.

• Add the scallops and fry for 40 seconds on each side just once. Don’t turn them multiple times.

• Place the scallops on a serving plate and then spoon on the orange soy sauce. Garnish with thin slivers of green onion.
