Dear Friends,

The month of June may bring the rains to Ghana but in our hearts we yearn for the sun and for friendship and brotherliness. These are the very themes that you will you discover in ENJOY MAGAZINE this month and on our website: www.enjoyaccra.com

We are pleased to bring you pictures of the second national Cowbell cycling tour which was a huge success. We hope that this will be an event that we can enjoy for many years to come. Congratulations also go to Jessica Tei who we featured in last month's magazine on her victory in the MTN Asantehene Gold Cup in Kumasi.

We bring you a profile of Mr Bhagwan Khubchandani, founder of the Melcom group, certainly an inspiring character, follow him through our pages as we tell his story.

PAX HOMNIBUS (peace and good will to all men).

There are many in our society who give funds to the underprivileged youth through numerous associations, businesses, or individual contributions. They are our friends and heroes. Find them in your favourite magazine, be they the Indian women’s association or Accra Accueil or countless others that we have featured in the past.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate a group of interns from different schools who recently came to work with us. They put together the article "Discovering African art and sculpture" which I hope you will enjoy.

One thing is sure my friends with the rainy season comes slippery roads, accidents and other dangers. We at Enjoy Accra offer our condolences to the families of the deceased from the two plane crashes in Accra and Nigeria. Just as the bright sun will re-appear so hope will come.

....Enjoy

t is often said that champions die hard and nowhere was this more true than at this year’s Cowbell national cycling tour. The gallant cyclists fought the weather and the varying altitudes, to cover a distance of 1313km

in a time of 29hrs 44mins and 36secs at an average speed of 39.1km/hr. In the end there could only be one winner and one man stood high on the podium with the gleaming trophy raised high. In the style of Lance Armstrong, Henry Tetteh Djangmah retained his title as best cyclist by time (yellow jersey) and his name will be written in the annals of Ghanaian cycling history as one of the greatest cyclists of his time.

Henry Tetteh Djangmah, last year’s yellow jersey winner from the Die Hard Cycling Club, was crowned winner of the 11- stage 2012 Cowbell national cycling tour.

The ace cyclist battled the rains, the sun, a slip up and fall as well as tiredness to hold on to the yellow jersey from stage 9 of the competition in Koforidua to the final lap at the Trade Fair Centre La, Accra. He took home a giant trophy, a brand new bicycle, a medal, cash prize of GH¢6,000, and products from Pens and Plastics Ghana Limited (PPGL) as well as keepsakes from Promasidor Ghana Limited.

He was closely trailed and challenged by Samuel Anim of the Young Stars Cycling Club. Samuel completed an impressive double as he emerged as both the best cyclist by points (Green jersey) and the best fighter cyclist (Red jersey). He took home a medal for each jersey, a total cash prize of GH¢6, 000, a trophy for each jersey and assorted products from PPGL and Promasidor.

The overall best team of the competition went to Henry Tetteh Djangmah’s Die Hard Cycling Club followed by Young Stars Cycling Club and City Migro Cycling Club. The Clubs and their managers were decorated with medals and given hampers of assorted Cowbell products from Promasidor Ghana Limited.

Victor Cudjoe of the All Stars Cycling Club at only 18 years of age, emerged as the youngest cyclist by time and proved to be the discovery of the tour. He took home the white jersey as well as a medal and a cash prize of GH¢1, 000, a trophy and assorted products from PPGL and Promasidor Ghana Limited. Interestingly Victor was competing for the first time in the race, and gave Tetteh Djangmah a good run for his money closing the 24 second gap between them at the 10th stage to only 17 seconds by the end of the competition.

A huge crowd of onlookers gathered at the Trade Fair centre in La to welcome the cyclists home and witness the official awards ceremony which was the climax of the 13 days Tour du Ghana cycling event.

Spectators were treated to fireworks and live band music by the Ghana Police Service. The elated crowd cheered and danced as they received refreshment in the form of chilled cowbell products.

Mr Wolanyo Agra, Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), commended the cyclists for participating in the competition and for their spirit and resilience. He congratulated Promasidor Ghana Limited and other sponsors for investing in the sport and urged them to continue in their bid to develop the sport. Mr Agra said the Parliament of Ghana will soon pass a Sports Bill which will encourage corporate entities to operate and invest more in sports in the country.

Mr Sahnoon Mohammed, President of the Ghana Cycling Federation, called on the cycling clubs to encourage more youths to join their clubs and added that next year's competition will be even more competitive and will include some foreign cycling clubs.

Enjoy as we bring you photos of the gruelling race to win the ultimate cycling trophy in Ghana. The race began with 72 cyclists from 12 cycling clubs but at the finish line in Accra

on May 27th only 57 cyclists completed the course.

As we all hail our champions, we can only say ayekoo and congratulations to the sponsors Promasidor Ghana Limited through Ghana’s favorite Milk brand Cowbell with support from Pens and Plastics Ghana Limited (BIC), the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Cycling Federation as well as Media partners the Multimedia Group and TV3 network.

ith the initiative of Institut Français du Ghana and assistance from Da Viva, a 2 weeks Pan African workshop was organized to educate and motivate the fashion and textile students of the Accra Polytechnic, KNUST, Kumasi

Polytechnic and young designers of the Web.

This project took place from the 8th to the 18th of May 2012 and was entirely financed by the Institut Français du Ghana.

The goal of this workshop was to impart and share knowledge, skills and experience from expert and professional designers from Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Austria and Paris. Representing these countries were, Miss Naa Amanua Williams; International fashion designer of Da Viva who shared her experiences and knowledge about surface design, Miss Gisela Gagakuma, who took the students through the practical application of Swarovski Elements, Miss Nicoue-Beglah Kotoko from Togo ; a professional and excellent trainer in the process of creating a collection, from Nigeria was Mr. Prince Oyefusi Akanni who gave a remarkable delivery on solving all problems of garment construction using patterns and a superb lecture on, ‘how to survive in a competitive market’. From Austria, were Mr. Michael Renzler; head of market development Africa from Swarovski Elements and also Mr. Martin Doujak; head of technical support for Swarovski Elements who gave a presentation and introduction of Swarovski Elements. Concluding the workshop was Miss Sakina Msa from Paris; international fashion designer who recently designed a collection for Puma, shared her experiences in the industry and knowledge about Finishing, Sizing and Pricing of garments.

The students and management of the Accra Polytechnic, KNUST, Kumasi Polytechnic and young designers of the Web were very involved and responded positively to the workshop. They asked the trainers to give them the teaching aids used in the lectures. They are also hoping that the trainers will come back for more training in the future.

The 2 weeks workshop was closed with a thrilling fashion show in Kumasi, organized by Da Viva at the Golden Tulip Hotel and supported by the Institut Français du Ghana, French Embassy, Alliance Française Kumasi and Golden Tulip Kumasi. There was a remarkable attendance of over four hundred guests and designs by students from KNUST, Kumasi Polytechnic and Ben Genesis who showcased their designs on the runway. Crowning the fashion show was a stunning collection embellished with Swarovski Elements by Naa Amanua.

n the sphere of business, if one wants to carve out a niche in

the hearts of the consumers or clients, he needs to display the virtues of flawless customer-care instead of practicing the policy of caveat emptor (the principle that the buyer alone is responsible).

and clients as he gives first priority to them. He believes in customer satisfaction by providing quality products and best services which widen the scope for prosperity of business.

Bhagwan doesn’t believe in short-cut gains or making profits by drilling to the depth of customers’ wallets: “My philosophy has always been to sell ‘more for less’. This has worked well for us and we continue with this mantra”. That is the reason why Melcom is the most reliable name in

Ghana and the customers’ first choice to shop in its 25 colossal departmental stores spread out over the country while four more branches are scheduled to open this year. Today, Melcom is the largest shopping spot in Ghana and Mr. Bhagwan Khubchandani, the leading retailer in this country, is running his business with the Group’s strong workforce of over 1,900 employees and its turnover reaching $200 million.

Bhagwan’s education was badly disrupted during his childhood as he attended 6 schools in 7 years. He could not study regularly in a particular school. He describes: “I completed GCEs. Realizing that my educational qualifications were insufficient to enter the business world, I took courses in accounting, correspondence and other business-related subjects”. Bhagwan entered the biz world just after he finished his schooling as he unravels: “After completing my schooling in 1954, I was given the choice of coming to Ghana or going to Hong Kong. I chose Hong Kong and spent 6 years working there and in Japan before coming to Ghana”.

Working in different countries like Hong Kong and Japan turned to be an advantage for Bhagwan as his years of stint helped him widen his commercial savvy. Since business was in his blood being from the Sindhi community, Bhagwan didn’t take much time to understand it and took it to the cusp of success in his host land. However, all it tied off with his inherited business which his father had started in Ghana along with his brother.

In 1946, Ramchand Khubchandani set up his own retail business under the auspices of Glamour in Ghana and that was opened in partnership with his younger brother. In 1954

they established Ghana’s first garment factory. Within a few years, they opened a textile factory, employing over 1,200 staff. On the other hand, their retail trading was also developing side by side. With their rising strides, by 1970, their company had opened 22 branches in Ghana. In order to improve the merchandizing and sourcing of new products, they established offices in Japan and Hong Kong. But in between, the baton was passed to the next generation, as Bhagwan acquaints: “In 1966, my father and his brother left Ghana to settle in the Far East and the business was left in the hands of their sons: Bhagwan (me) and Kishin”.

Both the cousins carried on their inherited business to the best of their wisdom and efforts but in 1990, due to differences in their opinion, they parted ways. Thus, Bhagwan left Glamour to establish his own business under the name and style of Melcom which he started with

a capital of $2,000,000. And then, he was joined by his two sons-in-law. Over the years, the company has developed into the largest chain of departmental stores in Ghana. Gradually, they diversified into other ventures also, for they have an established plastic factory, electronic assembly plant and a travel agency.

Now, three companies of Melcom Group deal with different businesses. Their Century Industries Ltd. is a plasticware manufacturing while Crown Star Electronics Industry Ltd. manufactures and assembles electronics, and Melcom Travel & Tours Ltd. has made its recognition as a full-fledged travel agency, bringing easy and convenient travel to its customers’ doorsteps. Under Melcom Group, there are ten more property-related companies and they also have large plots of land for future development. Besides Ghana, they also have their business offices in Hong Kong and China.

As Bhagwan has made monumental achievements in business, he has been honored with some prestigious awards also. From 2002-2006, The Chartered Institute of Marketing of Ghana has also recognized the enthusiasm of Melcom’s employees and management in this sector,

by awarding Melcom the “Best Retail Outlet of the Year” and eventually inducting the Group in the “Hall of Fame”.

In 2011, Bhagwan was presented a “Special Entrepreneur Achievement Award” by the CIMG. Bhagwan claims with perceptible elation: “This was the very first time such an award was bestowed, and I was privileged to be the first recipient”. He was a very active member of the Rotary Club and became its President in 1976. His group of companies was conferred on with a Citation for the services rendered during Bhagwan’s tenure. They also received a Citation from the Freemason Lodge acknowledging their charitable services.

Bhagwan’s participation in social work and his devotion to charity are laudable. About his charitable organization, he acquaints: “We engage in a fair amount of philanthropy. The charity arm of Melcom is Melcom Care and is handled by my daughter Rekha. We are also in the process of establishing an education trust”. A Citation was given to them by the Indian Association of Ghana for

Bhagwan’s charitable services rendered for many years, during which time he served as Secretary, President and member of several committees.

Married to Sheila in 1962, Bhagwan has 2 daughters: Kavita 47 and Rekha 46. Sheila’s father and Bhagwan’s father were close friends who were glad to have established a new relationship after the marriage of their children. About his daughters, Bhagwan says: “Kavita and Rekha are happily married and I am very fortunate that their husbands are working with me as partners. Kavita

has 4 children and Rekha, 2. My grandchildren are studying in the UK and USA, except for the youngest, who attends the American School in Ghana”.

With a dream to mark his business presence in other West African countries, Bhagwan reveals: “My dream is to go beyond the borders of Ghana and establish our company in other West African countries”. His efforts to realize this dream are constantly on with his distinct business ethics and it seems that days are not far away when he is able to reach his desired destinations of business beyond the borders of Ghana.

or the avid art lover African art represents a variety of diverse and unique artistic talents. Though observers tend to generalize "traditional" African art the continent abounds

in people of varying societies and civilizations, each with their own unique visual special culture.

From North to South, East to West; African art takes many forms and is made from many different materials. Artists produce different items ranging from sculpture, paintings, textiles, pottery to body art works.

Sculptures can be wooden, ceramic or carved out of stone. For most artists, the know how is transmitted from family members and transcends several generations.

There are several art centres in Ghana, however for this piece we spoke to artists at the artists enclave at Tetteh Quarshie in Accra.

Hankel Sam, one of the artists we spoke to is passionate about the arts and by the age of eighteen, had been working as a sculptor and painter for many years. Inspired by his grandfather, he learnt how to sculpt wood in the form of canoes, lions and masks. He also learnt the art of relief painting. Work satisfaction is what drives him and he feels happy when he finishes a piece. For the past thirty years

he’s been working at the Tetteh Quarshie Arts enclave and sells mostly to Europeans, Africans and Asians.

“Divine began his romance with the arts at the age of eighteen. He learnt the ropes from his grandfather and his creations are still inspired by the "old man’s" work.”

With time and support from his clients he has been able to export his pieces and sells them in other African countries and around the world.

John Adams, our second artist, started sculpting eleven years ago from his home in the Volta Region. Unable to fulfill his dream of becoming a pilot he made a career from his hobby of sculpting.

Our third artist, Divine, began his romance with the arts at the age of eighteen. He learnt the ropes from his grandfather and his creations are still inspired by "the old man's" work. Divine’s way of handling metal is sublime; he builds toy cars, silhouettes and bicycles using only metal. His designs are unique and a joy to look at.

Our artists love their work and would love to produce even more prized pieces, but they are struggling due to la ack of sales. One message is clear from all of them, they seek security and would love a permanent place to base themselves similar to the art market in Accra.

Our trip to see the artists at Tetteh Quarshie was inspiriational and I would certainly recommed a visit. You may be surprised at what is on offer.

Constance was born in Accra but spent eighteen years outside her native Ghana in the Gambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. This diversity in her background has influenced her outlook on life, business and art. A graduate in sculpture from KNUST College of Art she has become such a fixture of the art scene that it is easy to forget that her first solo exhibition “Passage of Discovery” occurred only last year. Before then she had ventured into the wrought iron and furniture design industry and remains an outstanding leader in that field.

Swaniker’s sculptures are usually abstractions of the human figure, suggestive of the human body with free flowing organic lines. She is prolific in her undulating and vivacious sculpture expressing the fundamentals of human experience.

Constance’s sculptures are much sought after.

Aries21/3-20/04

Taurus21/4-21/05

New interests, projects, and learning endeavors are featured in June, dear Aries, and these may come about due to professional pressures or challenges. Career shifts can be sudden. More contact with family, siblings, and friends is pleasurable and helpful. This month, you begin a year-long trend in which teaching, authoring, and communications in general can bring great benefits to your life. Your work could involve more short trips or commuting, or you might work more heavily in the communications industry. Look for opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills set.

This month, you begin a year-long trend that brings more oomph to your earning power, dear Taurus. A significant gift or bonus may come your way. This is a good time to work with financial institutions, go for a raise, or apply for a loan. You may need to curb an inclination to overspend, however. You have opportunities to increase your income through education, travel, or by expanding your reach/audience in business during this period. This month, some backtracking is necessary. After the 27th, you're ready to push your plans forward.

This month, you begin a fabulous year-long trend this month that boosts your self-confidence and brings personal opportunities to advance into your life, dear Gemini. It can be easier to find a close relationship, and for partnered Geminis, a partner has their best interests at heart and is especially supportive. Problems that have been holding you back in the past are likely to lift in the year ahead. However, this month there may be some disruptions to a friendship. It's not the best month for lending money or collecting on loans.

Libra24/9-23/10

Capricorn22/12-20/01

Cancer22/6-23/07

Your private life is especially animated in June, dear Cancer. You are beginning a year-long trend that brings great benefits from helping others, volunteering, and other forms of service. Spirituality is strong and your innate compassion is highlighted. However, you could experience conflict between the demands of a partnership and the demands of career this month. Finding a balance between the two, instead of pushing or rebelling against either, is the challenge now. You should also guard against hasty or impatient actions, which can make you more accident-prone.

This month, you are beginning a year-long trend that brings great energy and many benefits to your social life, dear Leo. Wonderful opportunities can arise for new friendships and through current friends and connections. Some of you may find romance through friends, groups, and associates. Some might bring creative energy or skills to a group setting. However, some drama is likely with a friend this month, which is likely to be resolved after the 27th. Your ambition to improve your income is strong. Romance is emotionally-charged and exciting in June.

Although career matters can be tricky this month, dear Virgo, you're beginning a year-long trend that will boost your professional life, and your reputation, to new heights. This can be a time of career advancement and success in business. Business-related travel or the reaching of a wider audience is possible during this cycle. Your status is set to change for the better, and a family member could receive an honor. However, this month you may be dealing with temporary problems with cash flow. A romantic relationship can be difficult to define.

You are beginning a year-long trend in which opportunities to travel, study, and otherwise expand your personal horizons are likely to present themselves, dear Libra. Teaching, writing, publishing, promotional activities, travel, legal matters, and studying are all well-starred in the period ahead. However, this month you could be facing some challenges balancing the needs of a partnership and the demands of family. You can be pulled in many different directions with less time to pursue your own personal goals. Tame restlessness and tend to your responsibilities as best as you can.

You are beginning a year-long trend that brings more support from others, financial gain, and stronger opportunities to grow a deep relationship, dear Scorpio. Your sense of security or wealth can increase through a relationship with a partner. Sources of income might also come through counseling work or the handling of others' finances and resources. This month, however, your schedule may be hectic, particularly on a social level, and there can be some challenges organizing your finances. Avoid jumping into new endeavors that require big outlays of cash.

This month, avoid risky financial moves, dear Sagittarius. Unsettled money matters may need your attention now. While close relationships can be tricky until after the 27th, you are beginning a year-long trend that brings great energy for forming or enhancing warm close relationships and partnerships, whether personal or business-related. Good publicity may come your way. Resolutions are likely to be found for long-standing problems in relationships. You are taking charge of your career in June, as your ambition is stimulated and others are taking note of your competence.

While work can involve some minor frustrations until after the 27th, dear Capricorn, you are beginning a year-long trend in which you can improve your working life considerably. Work tends to be very available to you, and possibly too available at times, so that you may have to choose between alternatives or you could take on too much. Overall, however, work is likely to be very rewarding. As well, health is likely to improve in the year ahead. Home life may be unsettled in June, but should calm down by July.

While your romantic life may be on the tricky side until after the 27th, dear Aquarius, you are beginning a year-long trend that brings wonderful opportunities to boost your social life, explore your creativity, and find new avenues for entertainment and self-expression. For some of you, a friend could turn into a romantic partner, or could introduce you to one during this cycle. Even so, watch for a tendency to misplace your faith in someone this month. Be strict with yourself and others when it comes to your money.

You are beginning a year-long cycle in which your home life is set to improve considerably, dear Pisces. You may be working from home, with family, or in real estate and domestic fields during this cycle. While it's a strong cycle in which to invest in real estate and in your home, this month, idealism may cloud your judgment. There may be some tense undercurrents or conflicts over money that disrupt a friendship in June. Relationships are lively and moving forward. From the 19th forward, romance and recreation figure strongly.

I think everyone can improve their appearance and what better way than by trying a new haircut or colour.

I hold professional qualifications in hairdressing and have gained many years experience working in London and Ghana. I am happy working with all hair types. I am a mobile hairdresser so no travelling is required and you can have your hair styled in the comfort of your own home.

The best bit of my day is when a client looks in the mirror at the finished product and gives me a big smile of thank you for a job well done.

Why not give me a call, make an appointment and see what I can do for you!

Folks,

Your monthly Club Social guide is taking on new elements and I want to express my gratitude to all the spots and bar owners who have been kind enough to allow us into their premises. You are the stars of this Guide and I value your participation.

This month our tour took us to the Garden city of Kumasi and the port city of Tema. We bring you exclusive insider details of what each spot is famous for, from the tastiest Fufu and Aponkye Nkrakra or ‘face the wall’ to the best Khebabs on offer anywhere in Ghana.

Eat while you drinkIt is particularly good to eat high protein foods such as cheese and peanuts, which help to slow the absorption of alcohol into the circulatory system.

Cultivate tasteEnjoy your drink, don’t rush it. If you gulp a drink you will be losing the pleasure of tasting and smelling the various flavors in the drink.

Accept a drink only when you really want oneAt a party if someone is trying to force another drink on you, ask for ice or drink a non-alcoholic beverage

Skip a drink now and thenSpace your alcoholic drinks out to keep the desired blood alcohol concentration.

Appoint a designated driverhave someone available who will not be drinking and will drive all drinkers home. This is critical if the person has consumed more than one drink per hour. If you know that you will have to drive after consuming alcohol, limit your consumption to no more than one drink an hour.

Know your limit If you do not already know how much alcohol you can handle without losing control, try it out one time at home with a friend present and have them videotape you, then see what happens when you consume more than the recommended one drink per hour.
