Staged at the well-known Ivorian restaurant Tante Marie in Labone,Accra, the event boasted a good atmosphere, marked by a full guestlist, plenty of food and drinks, and a multicultural ambience.

Similar to other Africans living outside their home countries, the citi-zens of Cote d’Ivoire who reside in Ghana elected to unite their fellowbrothers and sisters under a formal organization.

Evidenced by the event’s attendees, the number of Ivorian citizens liv-ing in Ghana is growing both in terms of quantity and quality. Unlikethe typical, transient diplomats, students, and traditional migratoryflows between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, many Ivorians are now set-tling in Ghana, some to head multinationals and multilateral organiza-tions based in the country.

It is against this backdrop that the Ivorians living in Ghana decided tolead the way in organizing their people to join efforts and play a rolein strengthning ties with their host country, Ghana, and to foster aunique, forward-looking vision for the developement of their belovedCote d’Ivoire.

The association is apolitical and aims to unite all Ivorian brothers andsisters under a common purpose of self-uplifting - professionally, acadmically, culturally and socially. This project has the full support ofHis Excellency, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire in thethe Republic of Ghana. continue. page 16

The people of the Have Traditional area in theHohoe municipality of the Volta Region celebrat-ed the Diamond jubilee of the Agadevi Festivalfrom June 8 to 15, 2008, under the theme: “TheDevelopment of Have: Our SharedResponsibility.” The chief of the traditional area,Fiaga Togbe Asemtsyra IX, reinterated the uniqueimportance of the festival and communicated hisintention to cultivate the spirit of self-help in thepeople to contribute to the development of thearea.

The festival also commemorates the occurrencesof the night of June 15, 1933, during which aheavy downpour caused a landslide that nearlyresulted in the destruction of the entire communi-ty. The celebration marks this historical and mirac-ulous event that has become a symbol of thanks-giving to the Almighty God and honours Him forHis saving Grace, deliverance and protection fromthat danger.

Over the years, the people, under the umbrella ofthe festival, have mobilised resources to enhanceeducation, health and human resource develop-ment. Indeed, most of the developments in thetown today--the Have Technical Institute, theHealth Centre, electrification, basic schools infra-structure, water and sanitation--are the directbenefits of the funds raised from the celebrationof Agadevi over the years.

Addressing a grand durbar to climax theevent, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IPMC,Amar Deep S. Hari, underscored the need for thepeople to incorporate a library and informationcommunication technology (ICT) centre in thetown hall.

He asserted that ICT and computers havebecome so important in the contemporary worldthat it has become difficult to survive withoutthem. He added that some use computers as alearning tool, while others use them for gather-ing information.

Mr. Hari finds that computers fascinate youngpeople, which makes them the main drivers of anation’s growth. In light of the large shortage ofICT skilled labour force all over the world, AmarHari believes in the need to train the current gen-eration well in ICT.

ENJOY’S TRIBUTE to

Mrs. CHRISTIANA OPOKU-BOAMAH, Manager OPOKU TRADING

It was late afternoon on Friday August 8, 2008 when Mrs. Christiana Opoku-Boamah departed to the world of the ancestors, a single event that will denyher family and loved ones of her love, attention and dedication to service.

It is often said that every good deed deserves a reward, but unfortunately for us at Enjoy, her untime-ly death has denied us the opportunity of ever rewarding or acknowledging appropriately the late Mrs.CHRISTIANA OPOKU-BOAMAH, a sister, mother and astute businesswoman who opened the doors ofher company OPOKU TRADING to us as one of the main distributors of the Enjoy magazine in Kumasi.

Always affable, I can recall the last time we heard from her--she was requesting more copies of theEnjoy magazine for her customers, who thronged her supermarket monthly for copies. She was alwaysavailable with a helping hand and a strong desire to provide her customers with the best.

Born on the 8th of October 1960 at Kintampo, she started school at St. Joseph’s R/C Primary, Wawase-Obuasi and was later admitted to Wenchi Secondary School, after passing her common entrance exam-ination. In 1981, she completed the Ordinary Level West African School Certificate Examination at theSunyani Secondary School. While in school, she assisted her mother in her trading business, an experi-ence that served as the bedrock of her interest and success in running her own business.

Upon completing school, she worked briefly with the Department ofAgricultural Economics in Sunyani. She then married her husbandMr. Opoku-Boamah while working as Cashier at the GhanaCommercial Bank in Kintampo. She also worked at the Sunyani andKumasi branches of the Ghana Commercial Bank before starting herown company, OPOKU TRADING, a business established by her hus-band in 1989.

She was altruistic and kind and supported many charity works inKumasi. She passed away at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitalafter a short illness, leaving behind her husband and 5 children.

She will always be fondly remembered bymany for her hard work, fortitude and raremanagerial acumen which enabled her tonurture and grow OPOKU Trading from a sin-gle–room retail shop to a household nameand wholesale colossus in Kumasi and Ghanaas a whole.

She has contributed her quota to the devel-opment of the Ghanaian economy.

Ramadan or Ramazan is a Muslim religiousobservance that takes place during the ninthmonth of the Islamic calendar; the month inwhich the Qur'an was revealed to the ProphetMuhammad.

It is the Islamic month of fasting (sawm), in whichparticipating Muslims do not eat or drink any-thing from true dawn until sunset. Fasting ismeant to teach the person patience, sacrifice andhumility. Ramadan is a time to fast for the sake ofGod, and to offer more prayer than usual (5 timesdaily). During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgivenessfor past sins, pray for guidance and help in refrain-ing from everyday evils, and try to purify them-selves through self-restraint and good deeds.

The name "Ramadan" is the name of the ninthmonth; the word itself derived from an Arabic rootrmḍ, as in words like "ramiḍa" or "ar-ramaḍ,"denoting intense heat, scorched ground andshortness of rations. It is the most venerated

month of the Islamic year. Prayers, sawm (fasting),charity, and self-accountability are especiallystressed at this time; religious observances associ-ated with Ramadan are kept throughout themonth.

Laylat al-Qadr, considered the most holy night ofthe year, is the night in which the Qur'an wasrevealed to Muhammed. Muslims believe it tohave occurred on an odd-numbered night duringthe last 10 days of Ramadan, either the night ofthe 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th (in Sunnithought) or the 19th, 21st or 23rd (in Shi'athought). Ramadan ends with Eid ul-Fitr, withmuch celebration and feasts. During the monthfollowing Ramadan, called Shawwal, Muslims areencouraged to fast for a further six days, known asas-Sitta al-Bayḍ, or "the white six."

PEOPLE OF APREMDO CELEBRATE THE KUNDUM FESTIVAL …

The Kundum Festival is celebrated by the peopleof Ahanta and Nzema in the Western region ofGhana from August to September, after themaize harvest. The festival is to thank the ances-tors for a bumper maize harvest and to offer sac-rifices of thanksgiving to the spirits of the ances-tors for protection.

The Ahanta and Nzemah people migrated fromnorthern Ghana during the 18th century and set-tled at their current home beyond the Pra River inthe southern part of the Western Region. Theyspeak the Nzema language.

The people of Apremdo celebrated the Kundumthis year with fanfair and excitement, and the fes-tival was characterized by a grand display of richAfrican culture and traditions. This year’s celebra-tion was significant because, due to a protractedchieftancy dispute, the people of the region wereforced to wait over a decade to celebrate. With theenstoolment of the new divisional chief NanaEgya Kwamina XI, however, the region was able toobserve the annual Kundum festival this year.

The celebration of the Kundum is preceded by aweeklong ban on drumming and dancing, whichrepresents a sacred period during which the peo-ple pay homage to the ancestors, led by the chiefpriest of the community.

Page 26: 032 ENJOY Accra Magazine October 2008

This period of minimal noise is followed by a weekof dancing and merry-making, during which thewhole town goes agog. It is also a time whennatives of Apremdo and other Ahanta communi-ties return home to join family and friends for thecelebration.

To mark the culmination of events at this year'sKundum celebration, the divisional chief ofApremdo Nana Egya Kwamina XI, was carried in apalanquin in a glamorous procession through thetown. Visitors and community members joinedthe procession as they danced to beautiful brassband music.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of theWestern Regional Minister Hon. A.E. Amoah, and

the MP for Effia Kwasimintim constituency, Hon.Joe Baidoe Ansah.

Addressing the gathering, the distinguishedguests advised the youth in the area to make edu-cation a priority so that they can ultimately bene-fit from the oil find in the Western Region. Againstthis backdrop, the chief launched the ApremdoEducational Fund during the course of the cere-mony.

Nana Egya Kwamina XI noted in an interview withEnjoy, that as a young Chief, he would doeverything necessary to encourage the youth andchildren of the town to get the best form of edu-cation possible.

We meet with the SigridKootstra, the founder ofColedic in Labone. a schoolspecialized in kids with learn-ing difficulties. She explained that there isalways a solution and help togive to kids with learningproblems.

Coledic is a new private provider of specializededucation services for children facing learningproblems. That term is an umbrella for many dif-ferent issues, including speech language prob-lems, weak memorisation, dyslexia, AD(H)D, weakwriting skills, weak math skills, weak motor skillsand concentration problems.

The school’s students are intelligent, but haveexperienced limitied or no success in traditionalschool settings. Often in typical school settings, the speical needs that these children have cannotbe met successfully, which can result in the chil-dren being neglected or ignored. Also, parentsoften are unsure how to effecitvely assist them, sosome of them do home-schooling or simply keepthe children at home.

Now Coledic provides high-quality education forthese children with the technology that theyneed. It is the first centre in Ghana to provide eachchild with his or her own laptop and to work onelectronic boards. Because classes are no largerthan four or five children, each child gets theappropriate attention required. Each child followshis or her own programme based on individualneeds. For example: An eight year-old is brilliantin math, so he can follow the average curriculumfor math. But he has problems with writing, so thespelling controller will work closely with him sothat he still can write on his average. With reading,he also struggles, and because of that, he has areading pen and a computer program that readsaloud the stories for him.

In addition to this, he receives spelling and read-ing strategies that are suited for his level. He alsohas low self esteem, so he sees the counsellor inthe centre once a week.

Specialists from many disciplines are connectedwith our centre. We create a whole program andteam around the child so he can develop in hisown way and his own time, so that he can succeedin life.

There are three basic steps that are performed during the process:

33October 2008

Parents are divided on using relaxers on their young girls’ hair. Some may say yes and others may say no. Research showsthat the ‘’yes’’ have it. Hence the introduction of relaxersspecifically designed for kids.

The question then is what are the deciding factors to consider before relaxingyour young queens’ hair?

Age:For most parents who are not keen on relaxing their kids’ hair, the best agefor their young queens will be when they turn 18. However, it is safe to straighten/texturize your girlchild’s hair from age 10, and have it done professionally.

Texture of hair:Though age is a prime determining factor, texture of the child’s hair is equally important and cannot beoverruled. The nightmares parents of children with coarse (thick) hair go through preparing theseyoung ones hair for school, party etc (if not relaxed) is enough for these parents to decide to relax thehair at an earlier age in order to make it more manageable….As long as they can sit still and there is adefinite need for a relaxer…go for it. You are the mothers and you know the stress you go throughpreparing their hair. My 5 year old had a texturizer at a reputable salon, we followed the directions andher hair is now 100% easier to manage. I would do it again in future, say, in 12 weeks on the newgrowth.

Style/Manageability:The style you decide your girl child wears also plays a vital role in deciding to relax. It is much easier tobraid, cornrow, put hair into pony, hold tiny little Bantu knots, twist or give your child that special hair-style for that special occasion only if you straighten it with kiddie relaxer with claim of ‘milder treat-ment and comfort plus’ such as Dark and Lovely Beautiful Beginnings.

You’ve decided to relax your young queen’s hair: Now What?

Hair talk with Clu-chey

sam clu-chey Adika Technical Manager softsheen-carson

A basic stretch for thelower back should be per-formed after a few minutesof warm up exercises or tread-mill before the hard part oftheir routine. They can also beperformed at the end of the ses-sion. Hold one leg at a time, Keepholding for 1-2 minutes. Take adeep breath at a start and exhaleas you stretch, gradually relaxingthe muscles and pulling in theslack as you exhale. Very basic, nottoo fancy, but effective. The reasonfor stretching after a warm up isbecause the muscles, tendons andligaments will become more flexi-ble after the body is warm.

You can use any other kind of stretchthat you think will be effective. TheEuropean strength athletes actually usesleeping bags or saunas as a warm up tosave energy for training. This may not bepractical, a few minutes on the bike ortreadmill will work nicely.

Overweight people usually havelower back problems that stretch-ing and exercise improves quickly.

A stretch routine done fortwo or three minutesbefore hitting the weightswill keep you from develop-

ing a back ache. An ounce ofprevention is worth a poundof cure, as they say.

When analysing diseases ofthe “affluent” among theGhanaian population, highblood pressure is at the topof the list. When the heartpumps blood through thearteries, the blood pressesagainst the walls of theblood vessels. In peoplewho suffer from hyperten-sion, this pressure is unusu-ally high. If blood pressure iselevated, the heart mustwork harder to pump anadequate amount of bloodto all the tissues in the body.Often times, the result isheart attack, stroke or death.Since 1998, hypertensioncases in Ghana haveincreased 4-fold from 60,000cases in 1990 to 250,000cases in 2005. In 2007,hypertension and cardiovas-cular disease due to highblood pressure were thenumber one cause of deathin Ghana’s major hospitals.

People are no longer eatingthe plant based diet that wasso popular years ago. Fastfood, junk food, fried foods, meats, dairy products, sugarand salt have taken over theplates and palates of mostGhanaian households andthe results of such a diet aredevastating the lives of mil-lions every year. Becausehigh blood pressure usuallycauses no symptoms untilcomplications arise, it isknown as the “silent killer”.Warning signs associatedwith this deadly disease mayinclude frequen headaches, sweating, rapid pulse, short-ness of breath, dizziness andvisual disturbances. The fol-lowing herbal remedies andrecommendations can beused to assist in reversinghigh blood pressure. Theherbal products can befound at SugarCane NaturalHealth Shop – Accra, Ghana.

Some advice !!!

1. Follow a strict salt-free diet. Loweringyour salt intake is not enough, so it is impor-tant to eliminate all salt from your diet untilthe blood pressure is under control. Readlabels carefully and avoid products that con-tain “salt”, “soda”, “sodium” and “monosodiumglutamate (MSG)”. Also avoid baking soda, canned vegetables, commercially preparedfoods, soy sauce, preservatives and sugarsubstitutes, mineral/soda (diet and regular)and over the counter medications that con-tain ibuprofen.

2. Avoid all animal foods including dairyproducts as these are extremely high in sodi-um.

3. Eat a high fiber diet that consists of freshfruits and vegetables, brown rice and oats.Apples, bananas, cabbage, aubergine, garlic, green leafy vegetables and raisins are a fewof the many plant based foods that will assistin reversing high blood pressure

4. Avoid all alcohol, caffeine andtobacco/nicotine

5. Keep your weight down, get regular light

to moderate exercise and drink plenty of

water.

6. Be sure to get sufficient sleep and as muchas possible, avoid stress.

7. Use the following herbal remedies:Cayenne red pepper, chamomile, fennel, hawthorn, parsley, rosemary, valerian andkelp.

Sudoku

43October 2008

Dear ENJOY reader!

Many of you have asked us about the origin of Sudoku. So we’veprovided some relevant information, and, at the same time, madethe Sudoku easier to read and divided it in 3 difficulty levels.

So here’s some insight into the game:

Sudoku is a logic-based number-placement puzzle. The objective is tofill a 9×9 grid so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3boxes (also called blocks or regions) contains the digits from 1 to 9only one time each. The puzzle setter provides a partially completedgrid.

Number puzzles first appeared in newspapers in the late 19th centu-ry, when French puzzle setters began experimenting with removingnumbers from magic squares. Le Siècle, a Paris-based daily, publisheda partially completed 9×9 magic square with 3×3 sub-squares in 1892.It was not a Sudoku because it contained double-digit numbers andrequired arithmetic rather than logic to solve, but it shared key charac-teristics: each row, column and sub-square added up to the samenumber.

Within three years Le Siècle's rival, La France, refined the puzzle so thatit was almost a modern Sudoku. It simplified the 9×9 magic squarepuzzle so that each row and column contained only the numbers 1–9,but did not mark the sub-squares. Although they are unmarked, each3×3 sub-square does indeed comprise the numbers 1–9. However, thepuzzle cannot be considered the first Sudoku because, under modernrules, it has two solutions. The puzzle setter ensured a unique solutionby requiring 1–9 to appear in both diagonals.

Completed Sudoku puzzles are usually a type of Latin square with anadditional constraint on the contents of individual regions.

The modern Sudoku was most likelydesigned anonymously by HowardGarns, a 74-year-old retired architectand freelance puzzle constructorfrom Indiana, and first published in1979 by Dell Magazines as NumberPlace (the earliest known examplesof modern Sudoku). Garns's namewas always present on the list ofcontributors in issues of Dell PencilPuzzles and Word Games thatincluded Number Place, and wasalways absent from issues that didnot. He died in 1989 before getting achance to see his creation as aworldwide phenomenon.

The puzzle was introduced in Japanby Nikoli in the paper MonthlyNikolist in April 1984 as Suuji wadokushin ni kagiru, which can betranslated as "the digits must besingle" or "the digits are limited toone occurrence."

At a later date, the name was abbre-viated to Sudoku by Maki Kaji

It became an international hit in2005.
