Y Camp Greenville’s Centennial celebrations begin this May to usher in our 100th summer of traditional, overnight adventure camp! Since 1912, thousands of children have had an amazing experience, playing and living together, and exploring and enjoying the woods, lakes, waterfalls, and trails on Standingstone Mountain. This remarkable Camp is also the location of Symmes Chapel, which most people in our region know as “Pretty Place.” I hope you will find time to visit our Camp this summer and see for yourself what a wonderful adventure it is for children. It will make you wish you were a kid again!

An area of focus that the YMCA of Greenville has long held at Camp Greenville is water safety. All of our campers are trained on how to be safe around water, whether at the lake, in a canoe, or at the beach. Along with resident Camp, water safety education is now emphasized in all Y youth programs. Drowning is the third cause of accidental death among children. With all the summer activities that involve water and water sports, it is imperative that we all work to keep children safe.

In addition to incorporating basic water safety in Y sports, after school and camp programs, the YMCA of Greenville provides nationally recognized learn-to-swim programs for youth and adults. Y swimming instruction is offered year-round and teaches participants basic water safety and stroke development. Enrolling children in swim lessons is something parents can do to help ensure that children will be safe in and around the aquatic environment. Learning to swim is also a skill for a lifetime of fun and enjoyment – everyone should learn to swim. If you are interested in learning more, please call us at 242-1111.

Another exciting area of Y development is underway in Verdae! You may have read in the press that the Y is partnering with Verdae Development to locate a Y in the Verdae neighborhood in south Greenville. The new efficiently planned center will be well-appointed with state-of-the-art strength-training and cardiovascular equipment. Members will be served by certified wellness professionals who will help them develop a customized training program to meet any fitness goals. As in all YMCA of Greenville wellness facilities, a comprehensive selection of group exercise classes will be offered. Located in the beautiful, 13-acre, Legacy Square retail village, Y members will have a convenient, complete workout experience. Naturally, if you are a PATH member, this branch will be one more outlet that you can use. We anticipate opening the Verdae Y this fall.

As we continue to plan for the future, let us also stay focused on the present and the healthy, happy moments we will create together this summer.

Yours in health,Scot BaddleyPresidentYMCA of Greenville

At the Y, we see every child who comes through our doors or plays on our sports fields as the leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, youth development is always at the top of our mind in our programs.

The Search Institute has done years of research on child development and identified what they call the 40 Developmental Assets. The more assets a child has growing up, the more likely he or she is to thrive and the less likely they are to become violent, buckle to peer pressure, or engage in risky behavior like tobacco and alcohol use.

Whether it's in our after school program, summer day camp, or youth sports, all Y programs naturally incorporate many of the 40 assets to ensure your child's success.

To see all Assets go to: http://www.ymcagreenville.org/40-developmental-assets.php

Greenville Water cares about the community. Protecting our water resources and ensuring the health and safety of the drinking water is just one of the ways we keep the community vibrant.

Greenville Water is the proud sponsor of the GHS Family YMCA Children’s Pool & Splash Park. The YMCA serves all segments of our diverse community, and the pool allows the organization to offer valuable aquatics programs. One of the most important programs is swimming lessons for children.

Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under. If children are taught the swimming skills they need to ensure their safety in and around water, we can greatly reduce the percentages of these accidents.

Remember to be safe this summer when visiting local pools and lakes. We also encourage you to help us preserve and sustain our water resources so they can be enjoyed for years to come.

Water Conservation Tip: In the summer, outdoor water use is as much at 70% of household consumption. Limit lawn-watering to two days per week to save water and money.

THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS TO ENJOY OUR WATER…AND TO CONSERVE IT.

Find out more at www.GreenvilleWater.com or contact as us (864) 241-6000.
