'PARI': NO FAIRY TALE ROMANCE THIS

CAST: ANUSHKA SHARMA,

PARAMBRATA CHATTERJEE, RAJAT

KAPOOR, RITABARI CHAKRABORTY

DIRECTOR: PROSIT ROY

A supernatural thriller, "Pari" is an unusual love story albeit with a goodmeasure of thrills and chills. Set in Kolkata, Arnab (Parambrata Chatterjee),a Bengali bhadralok aka gentleman, is an introver t and hence readily agreesto an arranged match to please his parents. Heading back home after meet-ing Piyali (Ritabari Chakraborty), his father at the wheel, he accidentallyknocks off an elderly woman, who falls in front of their car and dies.Aiming to help the lady's daughter Rukhsana (Anushka Sharma) now anorphan, Arnab gives her shelter in his home for a few days as she is ostensi-bly scared of "those men who want to harm her." Their unusual bond amidststar tling revelations of her identity, forms the crux of the film. The first half ofthe film supposedly has you on the edge of your seats, as there are jumpscares galore, some well-timed, others deliberate and uncalled for.The horror elements -- gore and gloom, torrential rain, evil spirits, accentu-ated by sound design, attempted at sending a chill down your spine, end upseeming a trifle inane and ludicrous, as these are grossly overdone. Thepace of the narrative however drags before half time, leaving you unsettledand bored as the core of the film till then appears confusing and unclear. Thesecond half picks up and you discover there is a full-fledged story after all, albeit poorly told. And that is the undoing of the film. The manner in which the

narrative propels forward, is a let-down. The story although fiction, is hear t-warming and touches your heart, but fails to engage you, as it unfolds af ter along and convoluted run, making for tiresome viewing.Director Prosit Roy sadly does not let the film rise beyond the initial horrorelements and fails to focus on story-telling. On the performance front, AnushkaSharma as Rukhsana, delivers a strong and unconventional per formance,as the vile, feral, yet, loving and vulnerable girl. You empathise with herinstantly. The range of emotions she displays are astutely handled by her.Parambrata Chatterjee as the quintessential introver t, essays his character withease and panache, delivering a restrained per formance. His demeanour and dialogue delivery are in synch with his char-acter from word go. Rajat Kapoor as the Professor with a dam-aged eye, espousing the cause of a movement, is effective, butnot necessarily outstanding. Ritabari Chakrabor ty as Piyali, hasa pleasant on-screen presence and appears effor tless. The back-ground score heightens the viewing experience as it resonates with thesetting of the film. The production values are decent and conform to the genreof the film. Overall, this film with a promising story had a lot of potential, butit is the weak writing that becomes its Waterloo.

Swooping down to raid the wrong venue she ismeant to be a laugh riot. Laugh at Balli's misadventureswith women if you must. His kid brother Veere (PulkitSamrat) is worse. He is your local do-gooder who helpsdistressed people. If only Veer knew of the audiences'

distress. Though well-meaning and innocuous VKW is like agust of hot wind hitting your face in mid-Summer. Everycharacters speaks with a bombastic guffaw, as if to remindus that this is indeed a film that's supposed to make uslaugh. Characters keep barging in incessantly, and newerways of generating laughter are sought desperately. In one early episode Kriti Kharbanda who executed herselfwith restrained humour in her last romcom 'Shaadi MeinZaroor Aana', pulls out all stops pelting kulfi bars at peopleon the road. Her father played by Satish Kaushik getshysterical whenever someone mentions the name 'Prabhu'.Maybe he couldn't get Prabhdheva's dance steps right insome shaadi. It's hard to tell when Kaushik is aggravated, since each one of the 277 characters (or is it 278?) tends toget hysterical sooner rather than later. I did try to keep upwith the torrent of characters. But soon gave up. There are only that many gate crashersyou can check at a wedding. By the time the rudderlesshumour express chugs to its wedding climax there is aHaryanvi Mamajee and his brainless sidekick runningaround the venue probably in search of a script. Do wake usup when they find it.

'HAMNE GANDHI KO MAAR DIYA'AN ODE TO MAHATMA GANDHI

CAST: JATIN GOSWAMI, PRATIMA

KANAN, SAMEEKSHA BHATNAGAR

DIRECTOR: NAEEM A. SIDDIQUE

"Hamne Gandhi Ko Maar Diya" is a technically well-mounted perioddrama. The story is simple and layered. If you are expecting a politi-cal drama leading to the confession of the assassin who killed Ma-hatma Gandhi - the Father of the Nation, you would be disappointed. To commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, direc-tor Naeem A. Siddique, who claims to be a Gandhian, instead givesus in minute details, a lengthy preach-fest that delves into the murderof the Gandhian philosophy.Nar rated in a non-linear manner, the tale begins in Calcutta (nowKolkata), sometime in January 1948, giving us an insight into therecently independent country which is awash with communal vio-lence that is destroying the social fabric of the society. KailashSingh, a victim of circumstances and with strong political views, blames Mahatma Gandhi for the sad state of affairs. After his millis burnt by arsonists, he finds it difficult to survive in a big citylike Calcutta.Hard on cash and jobless, in desperation and despite having ideo-logical differences with his mother, he decides to return to hisvillage Sasaram in Bihar, with his wife Sudha and child in tow.The family embarks upon a train journey which is supposed tospan over two days. In the compar tment, they find themselveshuddled among fellow travellers who are equally terrified of thevolatile situation. Among the lot is Divakar Tripathi, a school prin-cipal, whose ideologies are diametrically opposite of Kailash.Together, they provide the yin and yang of the tale. Egged by otherco-passengers, the discussion vacillates from religion to human-

ity in great detail, to an extent that a few conversations, to an on-looker, would appear amusing. Over the two day journey, oblivious ofGandhi's assassination, the passengers discuss Gandhian principlesfull throttle, only to have realisation dawn on them, at the end.The writing is simple and the lingo with free usage of Hindi and Urduvocabulary, captures the era to per fection. The tempo of the film isslow and the narrative flows at a meandering pace. The plot seemsmanufactured and is astutely handled. What keeps you hooked arethe interactions between the characters, which seem theatrical attimes. While the actors are natural, their demeanour may seem a bitover the top. This is probably to emphasise the period. The cast, Jatin Goswami as Kailash Singh, Subrat Dutta as Divakar,Pratima Kannan as Kailash's mother Savitri, Samiksha Bhatnagar as his wifeSudha, Shabih Jafri as his aunt Vimla Chachi and Utkarshika Yadav as his daughterMunni, are all per functory, they grab their chance and shine, despitelack of any memorable scenes. Visually, the look in the film is quiteconsistent. Every frame is well-mounted. The virgin locales and theclaustrophobic space it the train compar tment are brilliantly capturedby Cinematographer Shanti Bhushan Roy's lens. The few vivid scenic shots canned by the wide angle lens give thisfilm that extra cinematic boost. These add an aura to the narrative. The background score by Anup Bhat is light and mellifluous. To addflavour to the telling, there is a bhajan thrown in which is renderedwith full gusto. This in fact seems forced and obtuse. Overall, this filmmade with good intentions may not find appreciative viewers, exceptif it is made mandatory.

KING STANDS TALL IN BEASTDEBUT AS BRAMPTON FALLS1-0 TO SOUTH CAROLINASOUTH CAROLINA - Goaltender Will King turned in a stel-lar per formance in his first game with the Brampton Beast, stopping all but one of the 22 shots he faced, but he wasoutdueled by the opposing netminder Jeff Jakaitis, whoturned away 32 shots to help the South Carolina Stin-grays to a 1-0 win on Friday night in South Carolina. Aftera scoreless opening frame that saw both teams earn sixshots on goal, the Stingrays found the back of the net at4:59 of the second period. Taylor Cammarata cut in on apar tial breakaway on the right wing side and lif ted a shotover the glove of King to give the Stingrays a lead theywould not relinquish. The Beast threw everything they hadat the South Carolina netminder in the third period, firing16 pucks on goal but he was able to stop them all topreserve the shutout.

AS HIS PRIMARY SKILL,PANDYA NEEDS TO IMPROVEHIS BATTING: KAPILBY SAUMOJYOTI S CHOUDHURYMONACO, (PTI) Former India captain Kapil Dev wantsHardik Pandya to "work harder on his batting" as that ishis primary skill as an all-rounder. Pandya, af ter his 93 inthe first Test against South Africa in Cape Town, failed toget a single half-century across formats in the remainingmatches. Comparing any talented all-rounder to Kapil is a normin Indian cricket and the World Cup winning captain wantsPandya to play without pressure. He (Pandya) has shown theglimpse. He has the talent and the ability. Comparing with any-one put more pressure on him. I would like to see him go andexpress himself, enjoy himself, Kapil told PTI in an exclusiveinterview on the sidelines of the Laureus World Spor ts Awardhere. For Kapil, any all-rounder should be strong in one of thetwo skill sets and for him Pandya is primarily a batting all-rounder. I would like to see him in the team for one reason, definitely either as a bowler or as batsman. He has to work littleharder on his batting because he is a batsman all-rounder. If hecan per form a little more with the bat, the bowling will comeeasy to him and that s what happens to all-rounders," saidIndia's greatest ever all-rounder. Kapil said that Pandya is stillvery young and everyone is expecting too much from him.We have started expecting too much from him soon but I think hehas the ability and is one of the finest athletes in the team. But he hasto work harder to achieve success as an all-rounder, the 1983 WorldCup-winning Indian skipper said. Talking about next year s WorldCup, Kapil said that India will require both current skipperVirat Kohli s aggression and his predecessor MahendraSingh Dhoni s calmness to lift the trophy once again.

BCCI's refusal leaves Pakistantournament in doubtKARACHI, (PTI) The BCCI's refusal to send its team to theAsia Emerging Nations Cup scheduled in Pakistan thisApril has put a question mark on the tournament'sorganisation in the country. An official in the PakistanCricket Board said that since India was not willing to send its teamto Pakistan, the Asia Emerging Nations Cup could be shifted to eitherSri Lanka or Bangladesh."We agreed to host the event in April this year on the understandingthat all nations would participate in it," he said. PCB chairman NajamSethi told the media in Dubai that as head of the Asian CricketCouncil, he would soon be calling a meeting of the ACC in Colomboto take final decisions on the Asia Emerging Nations Cup and AsiaCup, scheduled to be held in India in September. He said Pakistan s participation in the Asia Cup in India was alsosubject to conditions. India has steadfastly refused to play Pakistanin a bilateral series since the 2008 terror attack in Mumbai. And evenin the ICC and ACC forums, it has been reluctant to give any conces-sions to Pakistan. Sethi also made it clear that his par ticipation in theICC board meetings in Kolkata in April would be dependent on whetherthe ICC could obtain a visa for him from India. "I have no interest intraveling to India. If the Indian authorities issue a visa I will go if notthe ICC should see," he said. Sethi also said that the next meeting ofthe ACC would be conclusive as venues and dates for the AsianEmerging Nations and Asia Cup events would be decided. "We willsoon decide the dates for the meeting in Colombo," he added.
