By Shazia MalikBRAMPTON - No new law as a consequence of this trip, but a lot of conver-sation and suggestions to immigration officers that they should be reason-ably accommodating except under serious circumstances and understandthe Indian culture. In many cases they do but it was kind of reinforcing thispoint and I'm hopeful over the time the situation will improve. These com-ments were made by John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugeesand Citizenship. However, when asked about the tussle going on betweeninternational students and the community, the minister did not comment onthat. Giving details of his India trip, McCallum said it was a very productivevisit. He toured Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar. I CONTD. ON PAGE 7

McCallum: Not every internationalstudent but those with more years

will be considered for PRCONTD. FROM PAGE 3He also paid his respects at the Golden Temple. He said: It was amoving experience to see that religion and witness the beauty andmajesty of it." McCallum also visited a university and the presidentialpalace, and met two governors but said the main objective of this visitwas to meet the staff of the Canadian mission and see what challengesthey face on daily basis. While in Chandigarh the minister found out thatthe visa refusal rates are high and so he held conversations with "indi-viduals and placed plans to improve the situation," the minister said."When I travel to China or Philippines and now to India, I found a lot offraud goes on all over these places. My suggestion to all those desirousof visiting their relatives in Canada, is not to fall in the hands of dishon-est people. So if they are coming for weddings or funerals or whateverthe reason may be, there are legitimate ways of entering Canada. Withdishonest people one loses a lot of money and does not even getthrough." He once again reiterated those entering Canada throughillegitimate means, stand the chance of being turned down, so McCallumsaid he wished to convey this message in India and in Canada, that oneshould not be duped by fraudulent people - one of issues he said thegovernment has to address. But that he said was on a serious note."Overall we had a terrific time, meeting people. The main objective wasalso opening our doors to people from around the world and from India. We are making it easier for international students from India to becomepermanent residents. Just recently I announced additional points forstudents from India because they study here, they speak English andFrench, know about the country and so are the perfect candidates tobecome permanent residents. With these additional points more ofthem would be able to become permanent residents. We are also openfor business for tourists, for students, for visitors."When asked about the main cause of high refusal rates at Chandigarh, the minister said it is because of "fraud and misrepresentation that hasbeen going on for many years and is not new. You should apply on yourown or through an agent but ensure that the one you choose is honestbecause if you use fraudulent means, you will lose money and youwon't even get in. Thus I had honest conversations with the staff there. The staff is getting familiar with cultural things like funeral and others andso are being more accommodating to cultural practices." McCallum in-formed that "some files in Chandigarh will be considered in Delhi, and viceversa. In different cities the files will be considered to improve situation butthe important part also is not to get duped. There is no magic bullet to solvethis problem but there has been some improvement, and after my visit andputting some measures in place, things will improve further." McCallumsaid he has heard positive things from the international students. "I didconsultations over the summer, toured various cities in various provinces, and not everyone agrees on everything but one thing everyone agreed withis that international students are valuable Canadians and citizens and wemust do more to encourage them to become permanent residents. Every-one in the world is after them and so are we. We are persuading them that thecold benches of Canada are better than the sunny beaches of Australia, thatmight take some doings but Canada has many other thing to offer, such as amulticultural society and offering more point to students to court them hereto Canada." McCallum added: "We have an aging society and the interna-tional students are the best group to become permanent Canadians. So Ihaven't heard any complaints, just they only faced a hard ride because of theold system because when you get in the labour market impact assessmentwhich says a company cannot get a Canadian to do the job and for certainjobs that is quite easy. But for the entry level jobs that are the typical jobs, which the students get are more difficult, so the additional points are anaddition." The minister informed that the government gives more points tostudents who have studied for a longer period of time than those who havestudied for the shorter period. He added: "Those who have studied in Canadafor more than three to four years will get more points than those who are herefor only one or two years. We also put a premium on the length of the studyand its seriousness, so I'm not saying that every single international studentwill be accepted, I'm saying a higher proportion will be and in particularthose who have spent a number of years to show they are serious." At theend McCallum said he felt welcomed in India. He was asked in India aboutSikhs being cabinet ministers. To this he replied that those are very capablepeople and also happen to be Sikhs and so they have important positions.Though defence, infrastructure, house speaker and innovation portfolios areimportant but are helmed by able people not because they are Sikhs.

NIKKI HALEY'S APPOINTMENT SIGN OF INDIANAMERICANS' POLITICAL EMERGENCEBY ARUL LOUIS

Widespread distress as demonetisationhits small, medium businesses hard

BY BISWAJIT CHOUDHURY

Nikki Haley's historic appointment to a cabinet-rank post by Republi-can President-elect Donald Trump that caps the election of five IndianAmericans to Congress this year has been welcomed by the commu-nity as a sign of its political emergence. Shalabh Kumar, the founderof the Republican Hindu Coalition, described South Carolina governor'sappointment as United Nations Ambassador as the "Third Diwali"after the festival itself and Trump's election. Echoing a broad senti-ment among community leaders IANS spoke to, he said it was a"proud moment for Indian Americans".Shekhar Narasimhan, a Democratic Par ty activist and fundraiser, said her appointment "shows that we have made it" as a community."We don't have to agree on everything, on policy, but we can celebratethe fact that we now have a place at the most impor tant table inWashington, the cabinet," he said. The job of US Permanent Repre-sentative, or ambassador, to the UN is a cabinet-level position unlikein most countries and goes to political appointees because of its highvisibility in the global arena.Narasimhan said another sign of the community's growing influencein US politics is the number of Indian American members of Congressgoing up from one to five in this year's elections -- all of them Demo-crats. Of them, Kamala Harris, is the first Indian American elected tothe senate. A.D. Amar, President of 'Indian Americans for Trump', saidHaley has achieved the status she deserves and it is good for Indiaand the community. One of the pioneers of non-par tisan community activism, ThomasAbraham, said: "It is a historic moment for the Indian-American com-munity that one of its own has been appointed to a top-level position. As a deal-maker, she will do very well to negotiate terms with UNmember-countries," said Abraham, who is now the Chairman of theGlobal Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Internationaland has been working for about 40 years to get Indian Americans tobecome politically active.

Harpreet Sandhu, executive director of the Friends of the AmericanSikh Caucus, said he was especially excited because Haley is adaughter of Punjab. Trump said he would be inclusive as Presidentand her appointment shows he is living up to it, Sandhu said. DeepakKavadia, the founder of the New York-based Non-Resident IndiansFederation, said, "Trump has said that he would suppor t Indian Ameri-cans, and this is his first step in keeping his word."However, there has been an undercurrent of hostility among someIndian Americans to her because she is a Republican. A DemocraticPar ty activist, Varun Nikore, brought this to the surface questioningher competence because of the lack of foreign policy experience. "It'snot about being an Indian American, but finding the best person for thejob," he said. With her experience limited to governorship and the

state legislature, "she would find it very difficult", said Nikore, who isa Vice Chair of the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) VictoryFund that endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton.Kumar, who has emerged as an impor tant personality in Indian-Ameri-can Republican politics, said, "We believe we have made a crucialdifference in US politics and mobilising Indian Americans has givenTrump an edge in the swing states that finally pushed him to victory."He added, "And that is being recognised." Indian Americans havehistorically identified themselves with Democratic Par ty and Kumarhas been trying to change this. He arranged for Trump to attend a rallyorganised in New Jersey by the Republican Hindu Coalition in themiddle of a hectic campaign. This was the first time any presidentialcandidate had directly reached out to the community.Trump has personally made an impact on the community, said Amar."Many Indian Americans have told me they used to be Democrats butbecause of him they have become Republicans." Kumar, who is alsothe chair of the Indian American Advisory Council of the House Re-publican Conference, said, "Haley's appointment will bring India andthe United States closer together and it is quite possible India will geta push for a (permanent) seat on the Security Council because of her."Kumar noted that Haley attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi'sSquare Garden rally in 2014 and has visited India. From the other sideof the polit ical divide, Narasihman said that both par t ies arerecognising the impor tance of Indian Americans who have talent. Herelevation to a cabinet-level position is a natural evolution in US poli-tics, Narasimhan said. He said that 18 Indian Americans have workedin President Barack Obama's White House in key posts, mostly awayfrom the glare of publicity making their mark, and it was time some-one from the community reached the cabinet level."I am biased and would have preferred that to happen in a Democraticadministration, but I am very glad that with Nikki Haley we havemade it," he said. Although he is a Democrat and the founder of theAAPI Victory Fund, Narasimhan said that for over 20 years he hasbeen pushing Indian Americans to join politics regardless of par tyaffiliation. What is impor tant is that those entering politics should notforget their roots, he said. "Haley has made an effor t to connect to thecommunity."

A huge wail of distress is being heard from small and medium busi-ness enterprises across India that have been hit hard by thedemonetisation of high-value notes. Alarmed by the drastic fall intrade, commerce and business activities by around 75 percent post-demonetisation, traders in Maharashtra have demanded various typesof concessions to help tide over losses since the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000notes were demonetised on November 8 in an ostensible bid to con-trol black money and weed out fake currencies.A delegation of the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association(FRTWA), led by its President, Viren Shah, met Chief Minister DevendraFadnavis and apprised him of the situation. Similar concerns arebeing express by SMEs across the length and breadth of the nation --and their plight seems to suggest that it is this sector that will behardest hit as the GDP rate takes a beating post-demonetisation: fall-ing to 3.5 per cent, according to an Ambit Capital estimate.Owners of small businesses in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh saythat sales have dropped 50 to 60 per cent since the demonetisation."Our stocks are not coming. We have even been waiting for the glassbottles of our shakes, which are very popular. The transpor ters arenot bringing the stocks," the owner of a popular eatery in Chandigarh'sSector 8, told IANS. Grocers say that sales have dipped becausepeople either don't have the new currency or there is no change. "If

someone brings the new Rs 2,000 currency note and buys thingswor th even Rs 250, we are at pains to return change," said MukeshKumar, a grocer in Patiala town, 80 km from Chandigarh.Rajasthan's capital Jaipur, famous for its gem and jewellery sector, has seen a sharp decline in business. The CBC is funded by Canadian taxpayers;therefore Canadians should decide the future of the corporation." "I propose a more Canadian approach - anindependent task-force to look at the future of CBC. It would be wise tolook at the issue in terms of addressing Canadian taxpayers' concernsrather than a political agenda. Once we start to threaten our media, westart to threaten freedom of speech."

Ottawa's new CPP law willpenalize women, people livingwith disabilities: NDPOTTAWA - Women and people living with disabilities will be penal-ized under the planned expansion of Canada Pension Plan benefitsif the Liberals don't fix serious omissions in proposed legislation."Women already receive lower average CPP benefits than men,and if this problem isn't fixed this gender inequality will only getworse," said NDP Pensions Critic Scott Duvall. "The Liberals, whoregularly talk about gender equality, must immediately recognizetheir mistake and take action to fix it."The NDP has pointed to a flaw in the Liberals legislation on CPPexpansion, Bill C-26, which does not contain the Child RearingDrop-out Provision. This provision exists in the current CPP so thatparents, mostly women, are not penalized for time taken out of theworkforce to raise children. The Liberal bill also fails to replicate asimilar existing drop out provision for people that have receivedCPP disability benefits."Canadians living with disabilities already face major financialchallenges. They must not be overlooked," added NDP Critic forPersons Living with Disabilities, Cheryl Hardcastle. "This gap needsto be fixed so that the most vulnerable seniors will not be disadvan-taged under the new expanded CPP benefits." Canada investing in several programsto prevent gender-based violence, stop human trafficking: TrudeauOTTAWA - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued the following state-ment on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women:"An estimated one in three women around the world experience vio-lence in their lifetime. This statistic is unacceptable. It is crucial for allof us - women, men, and youth - to work together to put an end to thisviolence. Violence against women is the world's greatest and mostpersistent violation of human rights, leaving women and girls vulner-able and unable to fully participate in society. It damages families, communities, and countries."Violence against women is not a women's issue. Men must boldlywork alongside women to combat this violence - and not simply be-cause they have wives, daughters, or sisters. Women deserve the fulldepth of respect, safety, and dignity, regardless of their relationshipswith men. To change the prevalence of this violence, we must firstchallenge the attitudes and behaviours that allow this violence to exist, andthat allow disrespect for and abuse of women to become commonplace. We must teach our daughters and sons the importance of genderequality and the need to treat everyone with equal respect.

Minister Bains: Trudeau to visit India soon so went to lay track

MIDWEEK EXCLUSIVE

Trade with India increased 30% over last year

CONTD. FROM PAGE 3The main focus of Mr McCallum was reducing processing time and look intofamily reunifications. He also went to Chandigarh and he is panning andworking on a proposal on how to better immigration services, better out-comes, shorter wait times, and better customer service. We are also invest-ing in it. However, my meeting with the team there was more at the economiclevel." Bains said there is a lot of movement in the area of internationalstudents and the Liberal government is making a lot of efforts to attract them."To put things in perspective, over a 100,000 students in Canada are only fromIndia with a lot of potential to grow. Our main competition is from UK andAustralia, and even USA but I was tracing with those with Commonwealthhistory, who have Westminster-style parliamentary systems, so our focus ison attracting international students here. While in Delhi I visited the IndianInstitute of Technology. We had discussions with students and they askedvery interesting questions and when we answered they looked at us veryfavourably. So we are trying to identify students from good schools particu-larly in science, technology, engineers, mathematics (STEM), that are impor-

tant for our innovation agenda as digital technology science, maths, engi-neers is good for our economy. He also visited the Bombay stock exchangewhere Ryerson university has opened its start-up programme where Bainssaid he is not only trying "to recruit students but small companies to comehere and do business in Canada, and smaller Canadian companies to go toIndia and do business there. So we have bullish relationship with India andthere are opportunities at the economic and student front. I also met some ofmy colleagues from Ryerson who are doing very well there." Talking aboutsmart cities, Bains stated: "India's smart city initiative is very consistent withCanada's innovation agenda and the different application processes for smartcities that the central government is funding. So a number of clearing compa-nies are helping them in development. Now they are digitally connected asthere is Digital India as well. What we can do is that we are doing clusterstrategy, which is not really a smart city but much more elaborate than thatwith multiple cities and multiple jurisdictions." The idea was how to create amagnet for jobs, magnet for companies, grow the best businesses, to growthe best institutes. Like we have here university, business and government

that works together, and so this modelcan be shared with their smart cit-ies. Bains said the Indian governmentwas very open to international col-

laborations. Like Wipro or Tata Consultancy or Tata Group of companies, were very much interested and ready to connect with the smart city initiativefrom India to Canada's super cluster strategy. Talking about research, theminister said it is a broad term but as far as the practical solutions areconcerned, he had a lot of discussion Dr. Harsh Vardhan, minister of Scienceand Technology and Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister for Communications andInformation Technology about social innovation. Bains added: "The day Ireached Delhi there was news that air quality had worsened to that high alevel in 17 and there was a lot of pollution. So we said what kind of technologywe can give from Canada for clean air, clean water, for better food security, asfood also is a problem, where it comes from, what is its quality, no one know.Though research is being carried out in India for clean food, clean security, but it is here that Canada has leadership." The minister said however, oneshould not look at business alone though Canada wishes to have trade dealsand make money but social aspects on how to improve the life of commonpeople, people to people contact are also equally important. He said: "Thereis a lot of promise there and when we said we can create jobs and help them,it touched Indians and businesses in a very special way and that is whereCanada built that very special relationship." He went to Bombay and saw theextremely rich and poor as well, so he said they had to see how to tackle thesocio-economic challenges there and how could Canada play a leadershiprole in it - to give solutions in those areas to improve the quality of life ofpeople, so the two sides also talked about the social innovation. OverallBains said the trip was very positive. A Mississauga-based small companySOTI was also there and they signed three MoUs in India. Bains said: "I'mproud to represent Mississauga-Malton and to help a local company do wellin India, it is very exciting and a point of pride for me."

Unaccounted deposits to attract50% tax, 4 yr lock-in periodNEW DELHI, (PTI) A minimum of 50 per cent tax may be leviedon unexplained bank deposits made using the banned cur-rency notes up to December 30 along with a 4-year lock inperiod for half of the remaining amount under the amendmentsto tax law the government plans to bring in Parliament shortly. However, a higher 90 per cent tax and penalty could be imposed ifassessees do not declare the unaccounted cash voluntarily.Cash deposits made using the scrapped 500 and 1000 rupee notesabove a threshold that are declared to Income Tax authorities mayattract 50 per cent tax, as per the amendment to the Income Tax Actapproved by the Cabinet last night. Half of remaining deposits, or 25per cent of the original deposit, will not be allowed to be withdrawnfor four years, top sources said. In case such deposits are not de-clared and are detected by tax authorities, a total of 90 per cent taxand penalty would be charged, they said. The government had after the shock demonetisation, given a 50-daywindow beginning November 10 for either depositing the 500 and1000 rupee notes in circulation or exchanging them for new currency. While the exchange, which was limited to a maximum of Rs 2,000per person, has been withdrawn, all old notes without any ceiling canbe deposited in bank accounts. This, sources said, had led to a surgein bank deposits, particularly in zero-balance Jan Dhan accountsthat swelled by over Rs 21,000 crore in just two weeks, raisingsuspicion that these accounts may have been used to launder blackmoney. While the tax authorities had talked of levying a peak rate oftax and 200 per cent penalty on top of it for any unexplained depositabove Rs 2.5 lakh during November 10 to December 30 period, itwas felt that such a move may not have legal backing.

TRINAMOOL CONGRESS DEMONSTRATION AGAINST DEMONETIZATION.

DEMONITISATION: CASE OF ORGANISED LOOT,LEGALISED PLUNDER: MANMOHAN SINGH

NEW DELHI, (PTI) Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh todayripped apar t the demonetisation decision calling it a "case of organisedloot and legalised plunder" and "a monumental failure" as a brief thawmarked the government- opposition stand off in Parliament with PrimeMinister Narendra Modi attending Rajya Sabha for a shor t time. However, a little later the House plunged into chaos with Modi notreturning to the proceedings after lunch, triggering an opposition de-mand for his presence during the entire debate that led to abruptadjournment. The highlight of the resumed debate, which appearedto bring back normalcy in the upper house after five days of con-f ron ta t i on , was a b r i e f speech by S ingh who sa id thedemonetisation and its impact on the economy would lead to dipGDP growth by at least 2 per cent.Earlier with Modi's presence, the opposition and the ruling side cameto an agreement to do away with the Question Hour and resume thedebate, which had been left incomplete on November 16. Leader ofthe House and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the Prime Ministerwill also par ticipate in the debate. The opposition had been demand-ing presence of the Prime Minister for the debate to take place. Modiattended the House during Question Hour as Thursday is the day ofquestions relating to the depar tments under his charge. An economist himself, Singh delivered a speech that was heardin rapt attention and to repeated thumping of desks by those in theopposition. "These measures (demonetisation) convinced me thatthe way the scheme has been implemented, it's a monumentalmanagement failure," Singh said. He aid the decision will result indecline of GDP by 2 per cent, which was an "under-estimate and not

an over- estimate".He said he agreed with the objectives of the scheme to demonetisecurrency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 as spelt out by the PrimeMinister but he wished to highlight the problems that the commonpeople and poor have been subjected to by the move. "It is not myintention to pick holes what this side or other side does. But I sin-cerely hope that the PM even in this late hour will help find us practi-cal and pragmatic ways to provide relief to the suffering of the peopleof this country," the former Prime Minister said. The debate was resumed during the Question Hour, from 12 pm to 1pm, after which the House went into lunch break. When it met again at2 pm, the Prime Minister was not there, prompting the oppositionpar ties to demand his presence again as they wanted him to listen toall the speakers.Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said the discussion should be carriedforward as the Leader of the House has said that Prime Minister willcome. Opposition members then trooped into the Well of the Houseshouting slogans like "bring back black money, stop making falsepromises".Jaitley said his "apprehensions" that the opposition did not want thedebate had come true as they were looking for "excuses" to runaway from the discussion. As pandemonium prevailed, the Housewas adjourned till 3 PM and then for the day as the same situationexisted. The Lok Sabha could not transact any business as theoppos i t ion cont inued i ts pro tes t demanding d iscuss ion ondemonetisation issue under the adjournment motion and a rulewhich entails voting.

BEIJING (PTI): Terming Prime MinisterNarendra Modi's demonetisation moveas "very bold", China's official media onSaturday said it was a "gamble" thatwould create a precedent irrespectiveof whether it succeeds or fails and Chinawill draw lessons from its impact oncorruption. "Modi's move is very bold.We cannot imagine what would hap-pen in China if the country bans its 50and 100 yuan notes," said an editorial inthe state-run Global Times titled 'Moditakes a gamble with money reform'.100 yuan is China's highest currencynote. "To prevent a leak of informationjeopardising the implementation of thedemonetisation reform, the roll out ofthe plan had to be kept confidential+ .Modi is in a dilemma as the reformaims to render the black money use-less but the process goes against the

governance principle of winning sup-port of the public before initiating a newpolicy," the editorial said."As more than 90 per cent of transac-tions in India are made with cash, ban-ning 85 per cent of the currency in cir-culation brings a lot of trouble to people'sdaily life" sparking fierce criticism in-cluding from "former Prime MinisterManmohan Singhwho termed it asorganised loot", it said."Demonetisation can crackdown oncorruption and shadow economy but itis obviously unable to solve the deepersocial and political issues that help breedthe aforementioned problems," the edi-torial said. However, it stated that as faras the root causes of corruption ex-ist, the problems will always re-surface. "In other words, the Modigovernment wishes to turn a long

and arduous reform into a one-offdeal," it said."Demonetisation is a gamble forModi. He bet on both the executionability of the government and thetolerance level of the Indian soci-ety, hoping that the benefits of thisreform can outrun the negative socialimpacts and low morale," the editorialsaid. It asserted that the "Western-style"democratic system of India allows littleroom for such bold moves. "However,he is really carrying it out, and will cre-ate a precedent no matter he succeedsor fails," it said. "Reform is always dif-ficult and requires more than justcourage. Modi's demonetisation camewith good intention but whether it cansucceed depends on the efficiency ofthe system and the cooperation of theentire society.

'Dear Zindagi': Lengthy life lessons sans drama

Movie Review

CAST: ALIA BHATT, SHAH RUKH KHAN,

KUNAL KAPOOR, ANGAD BEDI, YASHASWINI

DAYAMA, IRA DUBEY, ADITYA ROY KAPUR

DIRECTED BY: GAURI SHINDE

RATING: **1/2

Gauri Shinde's "Dear Zindagi" is a youth-centric cathar tic film whichgives you a glimpse of how they deal with life, relationships and theissues that bog them down. Perhaps, it is only the youth who willrelate to - the hear taches, seeking their dream job, problems withparents, et al. Kaira aka Koko (Alia Bhatt) is a 25-year-old Mumbaibased cinematographer, who is independent, busy shooting adfilms and longing to shoot her first full length feature. Carefree,happy-go-lucky, she is in and out of relationships, some unrequited, others unfulfilled. She cringes at the very mention of Goa where her parents live as shedoes not enjoy a great relationship with them. A hear tbreak leads herto the couch of a therapist Dr Jehangir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) andher life changes. Alia as the free-spirited, emotional youngster, craving love shines all the way. The film belongs to her and shedoes full justice to her character, emoting effor tlessly, making theaudience empathise with her highs and lows. Whether it is ventingher pent-up pain or playing kabaddi with the waves on a beach, she isa treat to watch. In fact, she almost single-handedly carries the film with a weak ploton her fragile shoulders. Shah Rukh Khan as Dr. Jehangir Khan akaJug, the "Dimaag-ka-Doctor", lights up the screen with his charismaand persona, in an immensely likeable character he por trays, but has

limited scope. He is still SRK and not the character on screen and hisdia logue del ivery st i l l remains very Shah Rukh Khanesque.Yashaswini Dayama and Ira Dubey, as Kaira's friends are lively andmake their presence felt with their por trayals. Kunal Kapoor asRaghuvendra, one of Alia's love interests in the film, is lacklustre andthere is a feeling of deja vu watching him on screen.Ali Zafar as a musician too looks every inch his par t, strumming theguitar and belting out romantic numbers, but is nothing more thanthat. The film belts out life lessons in abundance through verboseexpositions, profound dialogues, some in conversations, but manyin the therapy room, all of which make sense but tend to be re-petitive beyond a point. The film lacks drama and is stretched toover 2.5 hours on a wafer-thin plot, making for tedious viewing.Humour comes in the form of some light-hear ted moments but isnot enough to give respite. The second half of the film drags endlessly, although the pieces of thejigsaw puzzle of her life fall into place as she makes peace with life.Amit Trivedi's music too fails to make an impact and is almost lost. The film expectedly has good production values and the ethos of Goais beautifully captured through the lens of Laxman Utekar. "DearZindagi" could have been a lively, fun film albeit with life lessons, rather than the long-winded slice of life it is.

PAKISTAN COLLAPSE TO FIRST SERIES DEFEATTO NEW ZEALAND IN 30 YEARSNEW DELHI (PTI) New Zealand have pulled off a stunning victory over Pakistan in Hamilton, takingnine wickets in the final session of the match for a 138-run win and a 2-0 series victory. The tourists were set 369 to win on the final day and lost just one wicket in the first two sessions. However, from 1-158 at tea they lost their last nine wickets for 72 runs to crash to a second consecu-tive defeat and their first series loss since 2014.Neil Wagner took the final three wickets in seven balls to end the innings with nine overs to spare. The win ensured New Zealand's first series victory over Pakistan since 1985 and a rise in the Testrankings to six, while Pakistan drop from second to four th.Pakistan, star ting with one run on the board, didn't lose a wicket in the morning session but afterlunch it seemed they would star t blazing. However, Azhar Ali could only get an inside edge on to his stumps to go for 58.It ended Pakistan's second longest opening stand, lasting 360 balls. The second wicket, of Babar Azam (16) after the tea break, was much the same, an inside edge goingonto the off stump. Sami Aslam was third to fall, for 91, when he slapped one from Tim Southee toKane Williamson at mid off to fall nine short of a maiden hundred.

MOHALI, (IANS) Indian cricket team chief coach Anil Kumble on Thurs-day dismissed allegations of ball tampering levelled against Testcaptain Virat Kohli by a British publication. British tabloid Daily Mailhad produced inconclusive evidence on Tuesday to show that Kohliused to shine the ball with the residue of a sweet in his mouth duringthe second Test against England in Visakhapatnam.Referring to television footage of the incident, the newspaper hadclaimed that Kohli put his hands deep in his mouth, and then shinedone side of the ball during the second Test which was played fromNovember 9 to 13. But the doubts raised by the English media seemedto backfire as Kohli's actions were not cited by the umpire or thematch referee after the match. "First of all, I don't want to react to anyrepor ts in the media. As far as I am concerned, the umpires or thematch referee never ever came to us talking about it."It is cer tainly something we will not like to give much wind about. Asfar as I am concerned, there is nothing to worry about. People canallege, they can write what they want in the media. As far I am con-

cerned, there is nothing that our players are a par t of," Kumble toldrepor ters here on Thursday. Kumble also defended South Africa'sstand-in skipper Faf du Plessis who was fined his entire match fee forallegedly tampering with the ball during the recent Test against Aus-tralia in Hobar t."Even for Faf du Plessis, South Africa have played exceptional cricketto beat Australia 2-0 (in the series) and to be told that there has beenball tampering is very silly. It is like making a mountain out of amolehill," the former leg-spinner asser ted. Kumble also praised theIndian bowlers for their performance during the ongoing Test seriesagainst England. England had dominated the drawn first Test in Rajkotbefore India won the second contest in Visakhapatnam to take a 1-0lead in the five-match series. "Very impressed. Like I said in the firstpress conference at the star t of the series that the bowlers have beenbrilliant. It was not easy because they have bowled about close to 240overs in Rajkot and then within three days they bowled almost 200overs in the last Test match," Kumble said.
