Combined dietary supplement may cut heart diseaseSOHA ALI KHAN AND MANDANA KARIMI AT INDIA INTERNATIONAL STYLE WEEK IN JAIPUR (IANS).

LONDON, (IANS) A team of researchers, including an Indian-originscientist, has found that combining marine fish oil, cocoa extract andphytosterols into a dietary supplement is likely to help fight hear tdisease, a new study suggests. The researchers examined the poten-tial of combining the three ingredients as a means of preventing ath-erosclerosis or 'furring' of the ar teries."A variety of active food ingredients have been shown to impar t ben-eficial effects on cardiovascular disease although little is known re-garding their actions when taken in combination," said one of theresearchers Dipak Ramji from Cardiff University in Britain. Thefindings, published in the journal PLOS ONE, showed that in cell-based models, combining the three ingredients could, potentially, help halt the key processes associated with the progression ofatherosclerosis.Using a series of cell-based experimental models, the team exam-ined what happens when omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (foundin marine fish oil), flavanols (found in cocoa) and phytosterols arecombined. "The challenge now is to take our findings and examinewhether they translate into humans," researchers suggested.Atherosclerosis is the major cause of hear t disease, killing approxi-mately one individual every 34 seconds and responsible for around a

third of all deaths worldwide. Current therapies against atherosclero-sis are not fully effective and there have been numerous recent disap-pointments on promising agents that have been identified throughvarious drug discovery programs.

CERTAIN DRUGS MAY HELP REDUCEDOMESTIC VIOLENCETORONTO, (IANS) Researchers have found more evidence that psy-chedelic drugs, whose primary action is to alter the thought processesof the brain, may help curb domestic violence committed by men withsubstance abuse problems. While research on the benefits of psyche-delic drugs took place in the 1950 to the 1970s, primarily to treat mentalillness, it was stopped due to the reclassification of the drugs to acontrolled substance in the mid-1970s. Recent years have seen a resur-gence of interest in psychedelic medicine. "While not a clinical trial, thisstudy, in stark contrast to prevailing attitudes that views these drugs asharmful, speaks to the public health potential of psychedelic medicine,"said one of the researchers Zach Walsh, associate professor at Univer-sity of British Columbia in Canada.

Vision problems may put kidsat increased risk of ADHDNEW YORK, (IANS) Children with vision problems not correct-able with glasses or contact lenses are twice as likely to havea diagnosis of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) when com-pared to peers without such disorders, suggests a study. "Children withvision problems should be monitored for signs and symptoms of ADHD sothat this dual impairment of vision and attention can best be addressed,"said the study's led author Dawn DeCarlo from the University of Alabamaat Birmingham, the US. The findings appeared in the journal of the AmericanAcademy of Optometry. The researchers analysed data on more than75,000 children (aged four to 17) from the 2011-12 National Survey ofChildren's Health, conducted by the US Centres for Disease Control andPrevention. Parents were asked whether they had ever been told their childhad some type of vision problem that was not correctable with standardglasses or contact lenses. Examples of such conditions include disordersof eye alignment or eye movement, such as strabismus or nystagmus. Acurrent diagnosis of ADHD was reported for 15.6 per cent of children withvision problems, compared to 8.3 percent of those without vision prob-lems. The findings add new evidence that children with vision problemsnot correctable by glasses or contact lenses have a higher preva-lence of ADHD. The association is independent of differencesin patient and family characteristics, the study said.

DITCHED IN LOVE? CHILL,YOU'LL FIND A BETTER ONENEW YORK, (IANS) In tears after a break-up? Just chill aswomen who are ditched in love eventually become bold andstrong to find a better mate in future, say researchers. Thereare consequences of female intra-sexual mate competition thatmay be both evolutionarily adaptive and also beneficial forpersonal growth and development. Woman who "loses" hermate to another woman will go through a period of post-rela-tionship grief and betrayal. "But she will come out of the expe-rience with higher mating intelligence that allows her to betterdetect cues in future mates that may indicate low mate value.Hence, in the long-term, she wins," explained Craig Morrisfrom Binghamton University in the US. "The 'other woman'conversely, is now in a relationship with a par tner who has ademonstrated history of deception and likely, infidelity. Thus, in thelong-term, she loses," Morris added in the paper published in the OxfordHandbook of Women and Competition. The team from Binghamton Univer-sity and University College London conducted an online surveyof 5,705 par ticipants from 96 countries.

Use of hearing aids ups cognitive function in elderly

EVELYN SHARMA, DESIGNER JHELUM GOPAL DALVI AND FILMMAKER KRISHIKA LULLA AT THE AWARDS CEREMONY BY NEW HOPEFOUNDATION AT SION CARNIVAL IN MUMBAI (IANS).

NEW YORK, (IANS) A team of US researchers, including an Indian-origin scientist, has found that older adults who used a hearing aidperformed significantly better on cognitive tests than those who didnot use a hearing aid despite having poorer hearing. The findings showed that hearing aids can keep older adults with hearingloss more socially engaged, prevent the development of dementia aswell as slow down the effects of ageing on cognitive function. In contrast, elderly people who are hearing impaired and do not use a hearing aid areat an increased risk of sensory-specific decline in mental skills. "Weknow that hearing aids can keep older adults with hearing loss more

socially engaged by providing an important bridge to the outside world,"said Anil Lalwani, professor and otolaryngologist at Columbia UniversityMedical Center (CUMC) in the US. In the study, published online inthe American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatr y, the researcherswanted to determine if they could also slow the effects of ageingon cognitive function. The team included 100 adults with hearing loss between the ages of 80 and 99. Ofthe participants, 34 regularly used a hearing aid. Audiometry tests were performedto measure the degree of hearing loss. Cognitive and executive functions of thepar ticipants were also assessed.

MAKE YOUR ATTIRE FUNKYWITH DIFFERENT NECK PIECESNEW DELHI, (IANS) Make your outfit look more trendy and funkyby pairing it with an assortment of neck pieces. According to SamarpitaDasgupta, fashion director of fashion social network Roposo, minimalism is the way to go with accessories this summer.Whether you have to go to beach or have to go for an outing with yourfriends, the neck piece you are going to choose can make or break your lookfor the day. Here are a few tips and ideas summed up by Dasgupta:* Choker: Keeping it unassuming and edgy with a sleek choker andunadorned shoulders is inthis season. From interna-tional bloggers to evenstreet style fashion aficio-nados, the choker is backwith a bang. To add morecomplexity to the style, onecan layer them with mul-tiple tribal or silver chok-ers or keep it minimal withjust one.* Folklore jewellery: It hastaken a very tribal routethis season with heavyAfrican and Indian inspiration through beads, shells, wooden blocks, and oxidised silver. Despite the weight and richness, summer is allabout plain white and these tribal neck pieces soar up the oomphquotient a few notch up.* Lay the layers: Rope style neck pieces are the go-to pieces forlayering. Be it for a bare back or a simple traditional kurti, long andlayered rope style necklaces serve as a divergence from the barelythere outfits. Taking a cue from the season's jewellery trend, layeringallows you to combine most of them together -- from boho silverschains to tribal beaded pieces.* Oxidised jewellery: With pastel being the noticeable focus for thecolour trend this season, rusty silver adds the much needed balanceand perfection. Pair them up with white peasant blouses and pastel bellsleeve dresses and gladiator flats to reach that high street perfection.

YOGA MAY REDUCE IMPACT OF ASTHMA IN YOUR LIFEHONG KONG, (IANS) If you are suffering from asthma, practis-ing yoga may offer some relief from the chronic disease andimprove your quality of life, suggests new research. Asthmais a common chronic disease affecting about 300 millionpeople worldwide. The many typical symptoms of asthmainclude wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shor tnessof breath. "Our findings suggest that yoga exercise may leadto small improvements in asthma quality of life and symp-toms," said lead author Zuyao Yang from Chinese Univer-si ty of Hong Kong. The study, publ ished in the journalCochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, involved 15randomised controlled trials which involved 1,048 men andwomen. Most of the trials were conducted in India, followedby Europe and the US.The majority of par ticipants had mild to moderate asthmafor six months to more than 23 years. Six studies lookedinto the effects of breathing alone during yoga exercise, while the other studies assessed the effects of yoga that includedbreathing, posture and meditation. Most people continued to take their usual asthma medication while par ticipating in the studies. Thestudies were conducted over a time period of two weeks to over four years. The researchers found some moderate quality evidence fromfive studies that yoga exercise reduces the impact of asthma on people's quality of life.

Now a yogurt without addedsugar but naturally sweetLONDON, (IANS) The presence of added sugar in dairy products hasalways led the health conscious consumers to avoid them. But ateam of Danish researchers has made it possible to manipulate themetabolic proper ties of yogur t-producing bacteria to sweetenthe yogur t naturally, while reducing sugar in the final prod-uct. Also, using microbiological methods the researchershave almost eliminated lactose, so that those with lactoseintolerance can enjoy the yogur t. "The goal was to engi-neer the yogur t bacteria not to consume glucose, a fer-mentation product that is a par t icularly sweet form ofsugar," said Eric Johansen, one of the researchers who is as-sociate vice president at Chr. Hansen Holding A/S - a global bio-science company in Denmark. The findings are detailed in thejournal Applied and Environmental Microbiology. The team engineered the bacteria not to consume glucose, a par-ticularly sweet product of yogurt's fermentation. Yogurt containslive cultures of bacteria known as streptococcus thermophilesand the bulgaricus subspecies of Lactobacillus delbrueckii. Whengrown in milk, these two strains normally break down the lactoseinto two sugar components glucose and galactose, which isless sweet than glucose. Then, the bacterium consumesthe glucose and makes more galactose. The microbialtweak eliminates lactose, so those intolerant to the milksugar can eat the yogur t. "We wanted to change them sothat they would eat the galactose and spit out the glucose,"said Johansen.

SOCIAL ISOLATION MAYIMPAIR HEARINGNEW YORK, (IANS) Continuing to have social interaction iskey to keeping your ears sensitive even in old age, suggests new research. Hearing socially meaningfulsounds can change the ear and enable it to better detectthose sounds, the findings showed. "The ear is modifi-able," said one of the researchers Walter Wilczynski, professor at Georgia State University in the US."It's plastic. It can change by getting better or worse atpicking up signals, depending on par ticular types ofexperiences, such as listening to social signals,"Wilczynski explained. The researchers studied thephenomenon in green treefrogs. Researchers used greentreefrogs because they have a simple social system withonly one or two vocal calls. In the lab, the experimentalgroup heard their species' specific calls every night for10 consecutive nights as they would in a normal socialbreeding chorus in the wild, while the control group heardrandom tones with no social meaning. Then the researchers placed electrodes on the skin nearthe frogs' ears and measured the response of their ears tosound. "If frogs have a lot of experience hearing theirvocal signals, the ones that are behaviourally meaningfulto them, their ear changes to help them better cope withprocessing those signals," Wilczynski said. The findingswere published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Early maternal support boostschild's brain growthWASHINGTON, (IANS) Children who receive adequate care andnur turing from their mothers during the preschool years arelikely to have more robust growth in brain structures asso-ciated with learning, memory and stress response than chil-dren with less suppor tive mothers, suggests a new study. The findings suggest it may be possible to help children dobetter in school, cope better in life and develop emotionallyby helping parents learn to provide more suppor t and nur-turing early in the lives of their children. "This study sug-gests there's a sensitive period when the brain respondsmore to maternal suppor t," said study first author Joan Luby, professor at Washington University School of Medicine inSt. Louis. The findings were published online in the journalProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences EarlyEdition. In the study, the researchers were able to observesteady growth in the hippocampus of children with suppor t-ive mothers across multiple brain scans taken at differenttime periods, with 127 children receiving three MRI scanseach from the time they first star ted school through earlyadolescence.
