NEW DELHI, (IANS) The Bihar poll mandate is an endorsement of thestate's incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's per formance, evenas it marks RJD chief Lalu Prasad's return to the political mainstream.RJD has surged past alliance par tner JD-U in terms of vote share, butobservers point out that Lalu may have reaped the benefits of being apar t of the combine led by Nitish."Politics of caste has been superceded by politics of hope and deliv-ery. Hope and delivery was very high with Nitish Kumar as a chiefminister. Since 2007, all chief ministers who were seen as perform-ing were voted back," BJP leader Sudhanshu Mittal conceded whilespeaking to IANS.The Mahagathbandhan or Grand Alliance comprising Janata Dal-United, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress won 178 seats inthe 243-member house even as National Democratic All iance(Bharatiya Janata Par ty, Lok Janshakti Par ty, Rashtriya Lok SamtaPar ty and Hindustani Awam Morcha) won just 58 seats.Even as Nitish Kumar took a backseat at the press conference inPatna, letting "bade bhaiyya" Lalu Prasad hold for th, political observ-ers reminded that voters have cast their mandate in favour of theMahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), so RJD winning more seats wasnot the only decisive factor. The BJP that star ted on a developmental agenda faltered and gotcaught up in the semantics of state's complicated caste and religiousequations. The BJP's chief campaigners, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and par tychief Amit Shah failed to work their magic on the voters of the easternstate despite speeches high on firepower, polarising statements andthe promise of a Rs 1.25 lakh crore economic package. BJP leadersadmitted that this strategy did not work as it did not have a strongcandidate to counter Nitish Kumar's record of performance.

The Lalu Prasad-Nitish Kumar combine stole the show with cannypolitical strategy, keeping their differences aside to ensure that theModi-Amit Shah-led BJP did not "split the secular vote". Both con-tested from 101 seats each, dividing even the daily campaign workevenly."Both Nitish and Lalu addressed 9 to ten political meetings every dayand at the end of the meeting they would announce the other's sched-ule and the next meeting in the neighbourhood. They managed tocover quite a lot of ground like that," said a political observer associ-ated with the JD-U.Sociologist Shiv Visvanathan felt the BJP faltered by talking casteand religious semantics instead of sticking to its original poll plank ofdevelopment."In the first round, BJP ran away with it, did very well. But then RSSchief Mohan Bhagwat made his remarks on reservation. After thatthere was a sense of decline. The standard of discourse also declinedoverall from all sides," he said.Visvanathan also told IANS said that winning 27 seats was an "earlyChristmas gift for the Congress". "It is boom time for Congress. Beinga non-entity in Bihar to 27 seats is definitely an improvement. This isdefinitely an achievement for Rahul Gandhi (Congress vice-presi-dent)," he said. However, the BJP said the votes were not necessarily for Congress."When it is a combine, people vote for that. How do you explain apar ty like Congress that has no presence in Bihar getting 27 seats?"Mittal said. The Congress countered the slight by reminding that it had a lot to dowith nudging Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar to form and stick with thealliance. "Rahul ji in a sense is the architect of this gathbandhan(alliance). Nitish ji is its face, Lalu gave it strength and Rahul ji helpedcement this impor tant alliance together by his clarity of thought on its

leadership and path forward."The alliance was together based on its commonality of opposition toRSS and BJP's politics and belief in a new brand of politics vis-à-visthe Modi brand of politics," Congress chief spokesperson RandeepSurjewala told IANS. "Modi staked his political leadership and theperformance of this government on this election. It is a decisive re-jection of both," he added. Nitish Kumar managed to garner supportfrom several other state chief ministers like Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal ofAam Aadmi Par ty and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjeewho made an appeal for votes on his behalf.Lalu Prasad, who was literally relegated to the sidelines after hisarrest in connection with the fodder scam in 1997, managed to rulede-facto after installing his wife, Rabri Devi, as the chief minister, buthad to face electoral decimation in 2005 at the hands of Nitish Kumarwho went on to also win the 2010 polls in alliance with BJP in thestate. The JD-U-BJP combine ruled together till 2013 before par tingways. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Lalu Prasad's par ty could muster onlyfour seats, while Nitish Kumar fared worse with two seats. For thefirst time, the BJP seemed like a credible threat in the state aftersweeping the polls with its allies and winning on 31 seats. However, with this victory, Prasad is set to make a comeback in Biharpolitics that many say could lead to bigger things - even an eventualshift back to central politics. "Lalu to a cer tain extent is an interestingpersonality. People look at him with nostalgia. He does not have athreatening personality and is seen as someone who takes care of theinterest of his electorate," said Visvanathan. However, his resoundingsuccess set detractors claiming this will be the return of the "jungleraj" unless the RJD legislators are "tamed", even as analysts admit-ted he will now have much greater say within the par ty and willdecide on the appointment of a deputy chief minister.

"The address exists but who resides at the address is a matterof investigation."Officials privy to Rajan's interrogation told IANS that he landed inAustralia using the same passpor t, which was valid till July 7, 2018,and a tourist visa.Rajan, who fled from India in 1988 for Dubai, prepared the passpor ton the name of Mohan Kumar when he became afraid of being killedor arrested after the men of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim,

his close friend before the 1993 Mumbai blasts conspiracy, attackedhim in 2000 at a hotel.Rajan managed a dramatic escape by jumping from the first floor ofthe hotel.Rajan used the same passpor t to find his new hideout in Bali in Indo-nesia after his residency permit was to be ended on October 31, 2015.But his luck ran out and he was held at Bali airpor t on October 25 justafter landing from an Australian flight, said sources.Rajan landed in the immigration net in Bali when he accidentallyrevealed his real name, claimed CBI officials.Although the forged documents had his name as Mohan Kumar, heinstinctively said Rajendra Nikhalje when he was asked his name, the officials claimed.

HORWATH BLASTS LIBERALSFOR OPENING DOOR TO MOREASSET SALESONTARIO - As shares in Hydro One were sold on the TSX re-cently, Ontario's Liberal government has opened the door toselling off even more of Ontario's revenue-generating assets.Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath called on the governmentto rule out the sale of any more revenue-generating assets."The Liberals have opened the door to selling more than justHydro One," said Horwath. "Today, instead of closing the door, the Liberals opened that door even wider. The Premier doesn'thave a mandate to sell Hydro One, and she doesn't have amandate to sell any other assets. She needs to stop any fur-ther sell-off of Hydro One, and commit that she won't sell anyother revenue-generating assets."Last week Deputy Premier Deb Matthews talked about thesale of Hydro One and said "but it's not the only thing that weare doing… we are looking at other assets." Asked repeatedlyby Horwath to rule out fur ther asset sales, both Deputy Pre-mier Deb Matthews and Finance Minister Charles Sousa re-fused to close the door on selling more revenue-generatingassets."The Premier didn't run on selling Hydro One, but yesterday itwent on the TSX. In the last election she told Ontarians shewanted to 'optimize' assets, and is shocked that people didn'tautomatically assume that meant a sell-off," continued Horwath."Selling 15% of Hydro One is bad for Ontario. Selling 60% willbe a disaster. I'm calling on Kathleen Wynne to send a mes-sage that she won't sell off any more of Hydro One, and becrystal clear about whether she's planning to sell more rev-enue-generating assets in the future."

BIHAR VERDICT BRINGSCHEER TO CONGRESS

RJD LEADER LALU PRASAD YADAV AND JD(U) LEADER NITISH KUMAR ADDRESS A PRESS CONFERENCE IN PATNA (IANS).

BY PRASHANT SOODNEW DELHI, (IANS) The Bihar assembly results on Sunday brought cheerto the Congress with a nearly seven-fold jump in the party's tally in acrucial state of the Hindi heartland and BJP, its main rival in nationalpolitics, losing a key election. The results came as a vindication of theparty leadership's decision to forge an alliance with the Janata Dal-Unitedand Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar to contain the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.It also seemed to indicate that the par ty may go for alliances in thecrucial state of Uttar Pradesh, where it is considered weak. The successof the strategy espoused in Bihar is likely to revive voices in the party forthe elevation of Rahul Gandhi, who had taken an early initiative to forgealliances by meeting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of the JD-U in June. The results are encouraging for the Congress which is bracing for as-sembly polls in party-ruled Assam and Kerala next year. Tamil Nadu andWest Bengal will also face elections next year while Punjab and UttarPradesh will go for polls in 2017.The Congress, which has been reduced to being a marginal player inBihar which it ruled on its own about three decades back, contested 41seats of which it won 27 -- nearly seven times more than the four seats ithad won in the 2010 polls when the party had contested all 243 assembly

seats. With wins from two-thirds of seats it contested, the Bihar outcomeis the best news for the Congress in terms of electoral success since itsdebacle in the Lok Sabha polls last year. However, in terms of seats won,it is still placed fourth. The party had strong candidates on some seats and also owed its perfor-mance to transfer of votes from supporters of JD-U and RJD. It does notappear to still have forged a loyal support base of its own with uppercastes having switched loyalty to the BJP and the Dalits and backwardclasses divided among various parties. The Congress has finished third or fourth in assembly polls in Haryana,Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand held after the LokSabha polls last year where it put up its most dismal performance --winning only 44 seats. The party faces a growing challenge from the BJPin Assam while the Left Democratic Front appears to be on the upswingin Kerala.Gandhi, whose June meeting with Nitish Kumar clearly signalled that theCongress intended to fight in an all iance and conveyed to LaluPrasad's RJD that, if push comes to shove, Congress will allywith JD-U, on Sunday interacted with media persons with a smileon his face. He said the results were "a victory against the ideol-ogy of RSS, the BJP and Narendra Modi".

NITISH KUMAR'S WINA LESSON FOR MODI:

P. CHIDAMBARAMNEW DELHI, (IANS) Congress leader

and former f inance minister P.Chidambaram on Sunday said BiharChief Minister Nitish Kumar's win inthe assembly elections was a les-son for Prime Minister Narendra

Modi and he still has time to correcthis course. "Ni t ish

Kumar's return is alesson for Mr.

Modi. But there isstill time for him to

correct his course,"Chidambaram told

CNN-IBN. He also saidthe other political par-

ties have now understood that "with Bharatiya Janata Par ty'sstyle of politics, it can be easily defeated by fair and free elec-tions. Despite the immense resources of BJP, Nitish Kumar de-feated them," he added.Modi paid for insulting Bihar: Lalu's daughterPATNA, (IANS) The Bihar assembly polls result is a reflection ofinsult to Bihar by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, RJD chief LaluPrasad's daughter Misa Bhar ti said on Sunday. Bhar ti, who wasone of the star campaigners, said she was happy for the victoryof the Grand Alliance of the Janata Dal-United. Rashtriya JanataDal and the Congress. "Modi got a result of his insult to Bihar.People of Bihar were hur t by Modi's insult to them," Bhar ti said. She said: "The grand alliance's victory will be celebrated by thepeople across Bihar as a Diwali." She said people have rejectedModi's intolerance and voted for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar'sdevelopment and Lalu Prasad's social justice. The polls to the243-member Bihar assembly took place in five phases betweenOctober 12 and November 5.Negative statements by BJP leaders worked against NDA:Sharad YadavNegative statements from leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Par tyand the RSS during the Bihar assembly election campaign wentagainst the NDA, Janata Dal-United chief Sharad Yadav saidhere on Sunday. "(RSS chief) Mohan Bhagwat's remark on (do-ing away with) reservation also went against them. It became abig factor," he told CNN-IBN TV. Yadav said it was a defeat forPrime Minister Narendra Modi, his government and leaders likeBJP chief Amit Shah who were fully involved in the electioneer-ing. "It's a win for the Grand Alliance and Nitish Kumar's devel-opmental work...," he added.Bihar result defeat of intolerance: MamataWest Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday saidthe BJP combine's defeat in the Bihar assembly elections was a"defeat of intolerance. Congratulations Nitish Kumarji, Laluji andyour full team, and all my Bihar brothers and sisters," theTrinamool Congress tweeted. This, she said, was a "victory oftolerance, defeat of intolerance". Added her par ty colleague DerekO'Brien: "BJP loses. India saved."Modi must take blame for Bihar defeat: Shiv SenaThe Shiv Sena said on Sunday that Prime Minister NarendraModi must take responsibility for the BJP combine's defeat inthe Bihar assembly election. After saying that Bihar Chief Min-ister and JD-U leader Nitish Kumar had emerged as "a politicalhero" after leading his alliance to a victory, he said it was timefor Modi to accept responsibility. "This is a big win for NitishKumar. He has emerged as a political hero," Sena's Sanjay Rauttold the media. "When Congress loses, then it's (president) Sonia's(Gandhi) responsibility. Similarly, BJP must accept that Biharresults is Modi's responsibility," Raut said. He added: "We con-gratulate Nitish Kumar. This result will be a turning point in thecountry's political future." The Sena is the junior par tner in theBJP-led government in Maharashtra.

WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY DIWALI AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR

LALU-NITISH MAUL BJPPATNA, (IANS) In a verdict that is bound to have a national impact, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Lalu Prasad on Sundaytrounced the BJP to win the bitterly fought Bihar assembly polls and deliver a major blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who led hispar ty’s challenge. In contrast to what most exit polls had said, the Grand Alliance of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and theCongress was poised to sweep a whopping 178 of the 243 seats, leaving the BJP -- which wanted to oust Nitish Kumar -- and its allieswith just 59 seats.By late evening, the RJD and JD-U had won 51 seats each and were leading in 29 and 20 respectively. The Congress had won 20 seatsand was ahead in seven. The BJP was the winner in 35 constituencies and was leading in 18.The much-maligned Lalu Prasad’s RJD is tipped to end up as the single biggest par ty with 80 seats followed closely by Nitish Kumar’sJD-U with 71 seats. The Congress would get 27 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Par ty’s three allies -- the Lok Janshakti Par ty (LJP), the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and the Rashtriya LokSamata Par ty (RLSP) -- could together bag only six seats. "This is a very big victory. We accept it with humility," Nitish Kumar said in hisfirst comments. "From the national perspective, the result is significant."

The prime minister also inaugurated the 450 mega-watt second phase of the Baglihar power project in Ramban district in Jammuregion and the four-laning of the Udhampur-Bannihal stretch of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.Modi said in Srinagar that "we have to follow the path shown by Atal ji. Fromthis stage, Atal ji had raised the slogan of 'Kashmiriyat' (eclectic, Kashmiriculture), 'Jamhooriyat' (democracy) and 'Insaaniyat' (human values). I repeatthose words and say that the development of Jammu and Kashmir has tostand on those three pillars. Without the eclectic, sufist culture of 'Kashmiriyat'not only Kashmir, but entire India is incomplete. The massive participation ofpeople in Kashmir in the 2003 elections was a great contribution to democ-racy based on the principle of 'Jamhooriyat'. Even if the world changes throughtechnological advances, nothing can be achieved without the human valuesof 'Insaaniyat'."The prime minister said his "first priority is relief for the flood victims, forfarmers, for businessmen, for employment to local youth and infrastructuredevelopment". On tourism, the prime minister said 1.75 crore Indians goabroad as tourists every year. "Why can't we woo 5 per cent of those 1.75crore Indian tourists to visit Kashmir through better infrastructural facilities? There is scope for adventure tourism and eco-tourism here and more touristdestinations can be built through development of infrastructure," he added.Modi said he was privileged to be the first prime minister of the country whovisited Jammu and Kashmir so many times. "I am attracted by Kashmirsince I have seen love of the people here. I have visited far-flung areas ofKashmir when I came here in the past as a BJP worker," he said. On eco-nomic development, Modi said: "Seventeen months back nobody could haveimagined comparing Indian economic growth with that of China. Today it issaid India's economy is growing faster than that of China."He said Rs.34,000 crore were being spent on the Jammu-Srinagar nationalhighway and hoped that within the next three years, the journey that takes 10to 11 hours today would be completed in three to four hours. Modi then flewto Chanderkote town in Ramban where he inaugurated a power project andalso the four-laning of the Udhampur-Bannihal stretch of the Jammu-Srinagarnational highway.Speaking at Chanderkote, Modi said the Rs.80,000 crore package was justthe beginning of central assistance to the state provided it is efficiently andeffectively spent in the coming days. Modi said the announced package

addressed all the problems facing the state. "About 15 to 20 percent popula-tion of the state is comprised of refugees who came here after 1947."The package includes rehabilitation of those refugees and also the KashmiriPandit migrants who left their homes behind in the Valley. The package isbasically intended to give economic empowerment to Jammu and Kashmirto bring the state at par in terms of prosperity of our more developed andprogressive states," Modi said. Modi said the nine-km long tunnel which ispart of the four-laning project of the Jammu-Srinagar highway would be thelongest tunnel in the country. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkarisaid at the public meeting that the road project would reduce the present 300-km distance of the highway by 64 km. Punjab's crop residue burningthreatens South Asian air qualityBENGALURU, (IANS) Describing Punjab as a "burning" food basket, two renowned ear th scientists warn that the outflow of air pollutionarising from burning crop residues is not only a threat to South Asian airquality but also "can modify atmospheric chemistry and climate dynamicsglobally." "Thick smoke aerosol plumes from the burning may significantlyaffect atmospheric circulation, monsoon and El Nino-Southern Oscillationsystems, precipitation patterns, glaciology and atmospheric heating over theTibetan Plateau," says a report by Ramesh Singh of the School of Earth andEnvironmental Sciences of Chapman University in California and DimitrisKaskaoutis of the School of Natural Sciences of Shiv Nadar University atDadri in India. "This creates a cli-matic imbalance likely centered overPunjab," Ramesh Singh, who wasearlier a professor at the Indian Insti-tute of Technology-Kanpur, told IANS.Traditionally farmers of Punjab manu-ally harvested and ploughed the fields. The left over crop residues mixed withsoil provided nutrients for the next cropa month later. Mechanized harvesting, adopted since the late 1980s - to savetime and increase the farmers' profits -changed all that.

MOHALI, (IANS) Ravindra Jadeja led the charge with a five-wicket haul as India overpowered South Africa by 108 runs onthe third day of the first Test at the Punjab Cricket AssociationStadium here on Saturday.Chasing a target of 218 runs, the Proteas could only manage109 in their second innings on the rapidly crumbling wicketbefore being all out.Jadeja had figures of 5-59 while Ravichandran Ashwin (3-39)also made good use of the conditions. Fast bowler Varun Aarun(1-3) and leg-spinner Amit Mishra (1-26) bagged a wicket each.India, who had started the day at 125/2 in their second innings, were all out for 200 shortly after lunch. Imran Tahir (4-48) andSimon Harmer (4-61) spun a web around the Indian batsmen tograb four-wicket hauls. But the Proteas could not rejoice for long as their batsmen struggled tocome to terms with the copious turn and variable bounce.Jadeja struck the opening blow for India when he trapped VernonPhilander leg before with his first ball of the day. Ashwin justified Indiaskipper Virat Kohli's decision to open the attack with spin bowlerswhen he dismissed Faf du Plesis in the very next over. Ashwin un-leashed a flighted delivery that straightened after picthing as du Plesisoffered an easy catch to the slips. The Indian spinners continued to dominate and the South Africanswere in deep trouble when the in-form AB de Villiers went back to thepavilion shortly after skipper Hashim Amla's dismissal. De Villierswas fooled by the variable bounce of the rapidly deteorating wicketwhen a Mishra delivery kept low after pitching before crashing into thestumps. Opener Dean Elgar was fighting valiantly at the other end. ButAaron finally put an end to his laboured innings with a short pitcheddelivery that troubled Elgar with its awkward bounce. The South Afri-can tried to steer it to the onside, but the ball took the leading edge tospoon up in the air as Kohli grabbed it at mid on.

NEW DELHI, (IANS) Superstar Salman Khan, whose portrayal as an inno-cent Lord Hanuman devotee in "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" won the audience's heart, says his forthcoming film "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" is the "most beautiful"film he has done in his over two decade-old career. "It is my guarantee thatthis is by far one of the most beautiful films I've done. It is family-oriented andyou know that every family faces some problems, but those people are luckyto have a family," Salman said here at an event. With "Prem Ratan DhanPayo", the 49-year-old is revisiting his popular onscreen name 'Prem', andthe film also brings him together with Sooraj Barjatya after 16 years. They have previously worked in three blockbusters like "Maine Pyar Kiyaa,"Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!" and "Hum Saath-Saath Hain". And Salman has noqualms to confess that "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" outshines the duo's previ-ous collaborations. "Every film is different. Some are good, some are bad butthis is a very good film. The makers of 'Maine PyarKiya', 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...!' and 'Hum Saath-Saath Hain' have made 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo'with me and this one is better than those threefilms," said the son of lyricist Salim Khan."Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" paints a 'desi'fantastical story on 'larger-than-life' can-vas. The film, which also starsAnupam Kher and SwaraBhaskar, will release onNovember 12. Salman, who was accompaniedby his co-star SonamKapoor at the event hereon Wednesday, said thatit's time for some "full-onfamily" film outing."It is guaranteed that withwhatever mood you en-ter the cinema hall, you'll come out with abetter mood. There will betears of happiness.

NEW DELHI, (IANS) Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt on Thursday said hehas roped in Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali, who last monthcalled off all his scheduled concer ts in India, to sing for his play titled'Milne Do', a collaborative effor t of theatre actors from India and Pa-kistan.Bhatt, whose play narrates an intense love story between two cultur-ally-crossed individuals during times of hatred, says they want to"stitch" ties between the neighbouring countries with Ghulam Ali'svoice. "He (Ghulam Ali) has been approached and he has gracefullyagreed to lend his voice and be a par t of the peace endeavour throughperforming ar ts. I can't say whether he will come to India or not, buthe will cer tainly sing a song which will be a par t of the play," Bhatt, whose 1990 film "Awaargi" featured a song by Ghulam Ali, told IANS.After facing resistance by Shiv Sena in India last month, Ghulam Ali -- who made an entry into Indian cinema with his popular song "Chupkechupke raat din" for B.R. Chopra's 1982 film "Nikaah" -- cancelled hisscheduled performance in Delhi, saying that he won't return to Indiauntil "things are settled down". Then it struck Bhatt -- a filmmakerwho has been initiating cultural dialogue with the audience and ar tistesin Pakistan through films and plays -- that why not use "his voice asthe glue to stitch the nations together through this play"."Milne Do" will be staged on April 24 next year at Shri Ram Centrehere before it travels to other cities of India and Pakistan. "Laal Band"from Pakistan has composed the music and will perform live duringthe play, the story for which has been written by Suhrita, the writer of"Hamari Adhuri Kahani". Bhatt emphasised that with 'Milne Do', they

"are saying that the human interaction is the only route through whichdistances created in the hear ts of the people, can be scaled down".The National Award-winning filmmaker had earlier this year taken astage production based on his 1989 film "Daddy" to Pakistan.Condemning all the "unpleasant" incidents happening in India, he said:"Ghulam Ali sahab, a world icon, has been a ghazal king for years andhas been coming to our country for many years. He had an unpleasantexperience here in India and we personally, the government -- both inMaharashtra and at the Centre -- have without any hesitation con-ceded that was not the right kind of treatment." Ghulam Ali's concer tin Mumbai and Pune was called off last month after the Shiv Senathreatened to disrupt his live performance.

"Charlie Kay Chakkar Mein" is a neo-noir murder mystery film directedby Manish Srivastav. The film follows the investigation of multiple interlinked homicides thatoccurred in a city. The police find video footage of events prior to themurder and they try to solve the case based on that.Reviewing this footage along with the additional commissioner of police,Sanket Pujari (Naseeruddin Shah) is his assistant Ravi Nambiar (SandeepVasudevan) and the newly appointed investigating officer Sameera Pavathe(Auroshikha Dey). The footage is lined up in sequence to give a faint idea of the trail ofevents. Following this, a few suspects are rounded-up and their versionsinterlock the plot. The script is written by Manish Srivastav and Amit Sial. Gilded with aheavy philosophy about perception and truth, in actuality, the film with itsoft-repeated sequences, unravelling bits of truth, is a convoluted andcomplex drama. What starts off as an intriguing murder mystery film, soon with its com-plicated tale, turns into a predictable yarn with numerous - characters,

sub-plots and versions. The characters are cardboard thin. There is nocommon thread between the five friends. Sam (Amit Sial) is a drug ped-dler who has a soft corner for Nina (Manasi Rachh) an aspiring actress. She in fact, is dating a fellow wannabe actor Deepak Kay aka Dips (AmitTiwari). Patty (Anchal Nandrajog) has a soft corner for Sam and Jeevanaka Jeeves (Nishant Lal) is a hopeful director who is sex-crazed andconstantly recording events with his video camera. They exist becausethe writers perceived them to be.And the rest of the cast are present due to causality. Hera (Disha Arora)is a voluptuous beauty who catches Sam and Jeeves' fancy. Jabbar (SirajMustafa), Sohail (Subrat Dutta), Husaini (Vikas Anand), Rahil and Sayedare a part of the drug mafia. The dialogues are everyday lingo with jargons used in the drug-peddlingcircuit.The performances of the five hyper-panicky friends, constantly beforethe video camera, are theatrical and overbearing. Every scene of theirsseems staged.Naseeruddin Shah with his pseudo mannerisms, a heavy-duty title, in-vestigating a mundane case and showing keen interest in solving it, ispredictable and thus a wet blanket.

Auroshikha Dey as the "protocol"following, investigative officer isper functory, whereas SandeepVasudevan as the ever-obliging yes-man to Sanket Pujari, occasionallyelicits a chuckle or two. The actorsplaying Rahil and Sayed stand outand are worth a mention. The rest ofthe cast is stereotypical. Overall, withits narration going in circles, this filmfails to engross viewers.

RISHI KAPOORAFRAID TO DOPLAYS BUT WHY?MUMBAI, (IANS) Veteran ac-tor Rishi Kapoor, who is yetto perform in a play, says thatdespite a strong desire, he isafraid to come on stage. He had alsoshared pictures of his grand-father on Twitter terming him,"Good looking,Greek GodGrandfather!".Asked about the changes in the fes-tival over the years, he replied: "It'sbeen happening every year and it'sactually on auto-pilot - as such therehaven't been any changes in it.There is no profit-making in this,it's a trust. It's (admissionprice) is barely minimum justto keep it going on. You can't doanything for free as nothing is freein today's time."

Silly to say anything on SRK'scredentials: Zoya AkhtarMUMBAI, (IANS) Bollywood filmmaker Zoya Akhtar says ShahRukh Khan is a "loyalist" and it's "silly" to raise questions on his cre-dentials. ROAD TO PARADISE, A CROW'S THEATREPRESENTATION ON CHILD SUICIDE BOMBERS

TORONTO - Crow's Theatre and Human Cargo are thrilled to announce theWorld Premiere of The Road to Paradise at Buddies in Bad Times Theatrebeginning November 14. Written by Jonathan Garfinkel and ChristopherMorris, directed by Morris, and starring Pakistani screen star Samiya Mumtaz,Afghanistan's Parwin Mushtael, and Canada's Christine Horne, The Road toParadise is a Crow's Theatre presentation of a Human Cargo production.A story ripped from the headlines, The Road to Paradise documents thestories of a child suicide bomber in Pakistan, a Canadian soldier in Kandahar, and an Afghan immigrant in Toronto. Based on interviews conducted withfamilies of the Canadian Armed Forces and families of the Pakistan andAfghan Army, this gripping play explores how the war in Afghanistan hasaffected the lives of women and children. Each chapter is brought to life byactresses from each of the countries involved: Pakistan, Afghanistan, andCanada - a remarkable feature of this borderless production. The play was developed over the course of six years, during which HumanCargo Artistic Director Christopher Morris and his collaborators travelled inCanada and abroad, meeting international creative partners and conductingtheir interviews with families who have experienced the costs of war firsthand. The Road to Paradise is created in collaboration with Pakistan's re-

nowned Ajoka Theatre and with actors from each country in the spirit ofHuman Cargo's artistic mandate to foster an international theatre ecology. In The Road to Paradise, internationally acclaimed actress Parwin Mushtaelplays a character based on herself. Mushtael saw her husband brutallygunned down only two months after joining the stage project, due to hercareer as a stage and screen actress in Afghanistan. With the assistance ofChristopher Morris and others, Mushtael resettled with her children in Torontoin 2010, where she found herself battling a new enemy - post-traumaticstress disorder. PTSD and the emotional scars left on families and childrenof war form another major thematic thread in the play, one that is particularlyrelevant as countries around the world unite to provide refuge for displacedSyrian families. The Road to Paradise is presented in English/Dari with a cast of Canadian,Afghan and Pakistani actors, and explores how the war in Afghanistan isaffecting the lives of women and children. Surtitles will translate all Daridialogue into English. Following the world premiere at Buddies, the produc-tion will be touring to the Aga Khan Museum in Thorncliffe Park (December2nd), CFB Petawawa (December 5th), and Pakistan."This innovative creation process, the people we met and the stories theyshared with us, has made this more than the creation of a play; it has becomea life-changing experience we will carry with us forever," said Human CargoArtistic Director Christopher Morris. By spending time with the people whoare living in the midst of the issues we are exploring, we experienced firsthand the human conflicts at the heart of this play. The pain we wereexposed to when sitting with a distraught mother in Swat, Pakistan, who was weeping over her missing 15-year old Taliban son was aspalpable as the pain from the mother we sat with in Petawawa, Ontariowho was mourning the death of her son in Afghanistan. "As a creativeteam, we're striving to make a piece of theatre that is wor thy of theprofundity that surrounds this play. This is the story of our generationand it is with dignity, humbleness, and a fierce sense of purpose, that westage the world premiere of The Road to Paradise." In the spirit of increasingdiscussion through debate, Human Cargo will be hosting a panel discussionat Buddies in Bad Times Theatre during the run of the play in Toronto. Moder-ated by the CBC's Piya Chattopadhyay, this hour-long discussion willprovide oppor tunities for audiences to fur ther discuss PTSD, immi-gration, and the The Road to Paradise will run from Saturday, Novem-ber 14th to Saturday, November 28th (Opening performance: Novem-ber 17th) at the Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (12 Alexander St.).
