BY SHAZIA MALIK TORONTO - India is a huge priority market for the Liberal government's trade agenda as it is one of the world's fastest grow- ing markets. This was stated by International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland in an exclusive sitting with Midweek. Freeland said that the Liberal government desires to further the current $8 billion trade with India in several sectors including innovation and technol- ogy. Chrystia said a large number of Indian students who admire the Canadian education system are al- ready pursuing higher education in Canadian uni- versities and colleges, and the government is fo- cusing to attract more Indian students to its academic institu- tions. She mentioned that as a priority market, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is planning to visit India sometime this year however dates have still not been confirmed. She added Canada and India have longstanding bilateral relations, built upon shared traditions of de- mocracy, pluralism and strong interpersonal connections with an In- dian diaspora of more than a million in Canada. She said India is a huge importer of vegetables and as a growing market grains and pulses that account for over 95 per cent of Cana- dian agri-food exports to India. As India is harnessing green tech, Canada is interested in investing in India's 100-high tech smart cities initiatives and offer its expertise as it has more know-how in this more energy and re- source efficient sector. Canada can also offer a lot in solar and green technologies to India. While at the G-7 summit recently, she got the chance to meet Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry (Independent Charge) and invited her to Canada. Nirmala was expected to visit Canada soon but due to unforeseen circumstances, for now, she has cancelled her Canada visit but will soon travel here. Thus Chrystia said, from technology to agricul- ture, Canada has a lot to offer to India and attract Indians to come here instead of going elsewhere. Talking about the G-7 summit, she informed the prime minister and the Canadian delegation had constructive meetings with auto giants there. The main purpose of the visit was to increase people-to- people contacts and sell brand Canada as a safe haven for future investments. Chrystia concluded therefore, it was a highly success- ful tour and will translate into future opportunities. MPP JAGMEET SINGH'S MOTION ON TERMING SIKHKILLING IN 1984 AS 'GENOCIDE' DEFEATED

QUEEN'S PARK - Deputy Leaderfor Ontar io 's NDP JagmeetSingh's motion call ing on theOntario Government to formallyrecognize the November 1984state organized violence perpe-trated against Sikhs throughoutIndia as genocide was debatedand voted down by the OntarioLiberal Government."Today, the liberals turned theirback on human rights, social jus-tice, reconciliation and healing. They turned their back not onlyon Sikhs but every Hindu andMuslim family that risked theirl ives to shel ter their Sikhneighbours," the MPP fromBramalea-Gore-Malton said fol-lowing that day's devastat ingvote.Despite receiving suppor t fromboth the NDP and ProgressiveConservative caucuses, Ontario'sLiberal Government defeated themotion 40 to 22. The state orga-nized anti Sikh violence has com-monly been referred to as a riot. However the term riots suggestthe violence was spontaneousand communal."It is impor tant to clarify the mis-concept ion that the v io lenceagainst Sikhs was communal innature. This could not be fur therfrom the truth," Singh said to kickoff the debate. Under McGuintythe Liberals welcomed KamalNath an alleged perpetrator ofGenocide, Kathleen Wynne wasa par t of these meetings."Ontario is a place where peoplesee democracy as a way to healfrom the wounds of the past, buttoday Kathleen Wynne and theLiberals denied this oppor tunityto Sikhs," Singh explained. "It's

unfor tunate that the Liberal Gov-ernment does not understand theimpor tance of accurately describ-ing the violence as a genocide, which works to remove the blamefrom innocent members of thecommunity and instead placesthe blame squarely on those whoorganized this atrocity."Former Justice of the Indian Su-preme Cour t , author of theNanavat i Commission Repor tstated that the killing of Sikhswas planned and organized. Hu-man rights organizations havealso repor ted that the voter listswere used to identify and targetSikh businesses and homes."While, we cannot change thehorrific events of 1984, as Mem-bers of this Legislature, we hadan oppor tunity to clear miscon-ceptions which divide the com-munity" Singh explained."The first step to healing and rec-onciliation is to recognize theharm that was committed andthat's what this motion, if passedwould have done." The OntarioGovernment would have been thefirst legislative assembly to for-mally call the events of Novem-ber 1984 a genocide in the world.Meanwhile, MPP Harinder Takharsaid: "This is a great oppor tunityfor me to speak on this important sub-ject matter. But before I do, I want torecognize the members of the Sikhcommunity who are in the Legis-lature to watch this debate."We are debating a motion per-taining to the events of Novem-ber 1984 in India. This week, wemark the 32nd anniversary of theinvasion of the Golden Temple.Earlier this year, as par t of Pre-mier Wynne's trade mission to

India and Punjab, I had the honourto visit the Golden Temple again. The tragic events leading up toand following the invasion of theGolden Temple and the assassi-nation of Prime Minister IndiraGandhi resulted in the unneces-sary loss of thousands of inno-cent lives. We have all heard-andthe member f rom Bramalea-Gore-Malton talked about-someof the hear t-wrenching storiesfrom the families of the victims, seen through print media, throughTV interviews and some personalcontacts. We can all share somepersonal stories as well."Those stories are true. Innocentpeople, for no fault of their own, were killed. Mothers witnessedtheir young sons at their primeage being killed. Wives saw theirhusbands, fathers, fathers-in-lawand brothers dragged out of theirhomes and murdered in front oftheir own eyes. Young childrensaw their parents being killed infront of their own eyes. Parentssaw their daughters being raped, and they watched helplessly.Their homes and shops were ran-

sacked and set on fire."I salute the human beings whoprovided shelter to, and saved thelives of, some of the people whowere targeted. Several countrieshave recognized the grave atroci-ties that took place in 1984. Inresponding to an online petitioncampaign that had generated over30,000 signatures in 2013, Presi-dent Obama, even though he re-fused to declare the 1984 anti-Sikh violence as genocide, notedthat grave human rights violationshad occurred and continued tosay that, "We continue to con-demn-and more impor tantly, towork against-violence directed atpeople based on their religiousaffiliation."" In offer ing his government 'sapology in 2005, then-Prime Min-ister Manmohan Singh said thefollowing: "I have no hesitation inapologizing to the Sikh commu-nity. I apologize not only to theSikh community but to the wholeIndian nation, because what tookplace in 1984 is the negation ofthe concept of nationhood en-shrined in our constitution. On

behalf of our government, on be-half of the entire people of thiscountry I bow my head in shamethat such a thing took place.""Then-Prime Minister ManmohanSingh went on to say the follow-ing: "We cannot rewrite the past. But as human beings, we havethe willpower, and we have theability to write a better future forall of us." For some victims andtheir families, the 1984 event'swounds may have healed. Forothers, this tragedy still carrieson as an open wound to this day."For 32 years, families of the vic-tims have been asking that thoseresponsible be brought to justice.Mothers have been raising theirchildren by doing manual labourwithout any relief or suppor t. Inaddition, some bad elements insociety have fur ther committedcrimes and taken advantage ofthe s i tuat ion by demandingmoney, extor ting money and ex-ploiting young women. This isshameful . My words in th isHouse today are really emptywords, and they are no relief tothose families.

"Moreover, this is not a par tisanissue. It is so unfor tunate that themember who brought up this mo-tion failed to discuss it with theother four members of the Legis-lature who are also Sikh mem-bers. If he had done that, we couldhave introduced this motion to-gether, which could have madethis motion more effective andmeaningful. I want to watch thisimpor tant debate. I have an openmind on this issue. My objectiveas a legislator is to ensure thatjustice is served, those who com-mitted crimes are punished, re-lief is provided to mothers whohave been struggling to raisetheir children, steps are taken sothat these kinds of unfor tunateacts do not happen again, and badelements of society do not exploitsituations again. I look forward tothe debate."MPP Amri t Mangat spoke onSouthasian PULSE Radio and saidthat she condemned the violenceagainst the Sikhs in November1984 in the provincial parliamentbut she did not vote in suppor tof the motion brought by MPPJagmeet Singh and abstainedfrom voting as she thought thiswas not the right place to dealwith this issue. She also de-manded more time to study themotion and said Jagmeet Singhshould have discussed the mo-tion with her and other liberalMPPs before bringing it beforethe parliament.Harjit Jaswal who ran as a can-didate from PC par ty in the lastprovincial e lect ions also saidthat this is a very sensitive issuefor the community and we shouldnot play politics over this.

ONTARIO - Ontario is expanding pension coverage to over four millionworkers without an adequate workplace pension plan.Today, the province passed the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan Act(Strengthening Retirement Security for Ontarians), 2016. The OntarioRetirement Pension Plan (ORPP) will bring financial security anddrive economic growth for generations to come, by providing Ontarioworkers with a predictable stream of income in retirement, paid forlife. The ORPP will also offer a survivor benefit for all plan members.Along with regulations expected this summer, the legislation givesemployers and employees the information they need to prepare forthe launch of the ORPP. This is a crucial step forward in fulfilling thegovernment's commitment that every eligible employee is par t of theORPP or a comparable workplace pension plan by 2020.Strengthening the retirement income system is critical to the futureprosperity of the province. Studies show that many of today's work-ers are not saving enough to maintain their standard of living in retire-

ment. Pension coverage is also low for many Ontarians, with onlyone in four younger workers - aged 25 to 34 - par ticipating in a work-place pension plan."Two-thirds of ?our workers do not have the benefit of a workplacepension plan. We are delivering on our commitment to strengtheningretirement security for millions of Ontario workers and their families. Our main objective is to intensively look at ways to meet the goals ofthe ORPP through an enhanced CPP framework, while preserving ourability to implement the ORPP, should that not be possible." - CharlesSousa, Minister of Finance"The ORPP is the most significant improvement in retirement secu-rity since the introduction of the Canada Pension Plan in 1966. Thislegislation will expand workplace pension access to more than fourmillion Ontario workers, meaning greater security and confidence inretirement for current and future generations." - Mitzie Hunter, Asso-ciate Minister of Finance (Ontario Retirement Pension Plan)

VAIGHAN - Premier Kathleen Wynne recently visited the site of thefuture Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station at Highway 7 in York Re-gion to mark the completion of track work on the Toronto-York SpadinaSubway Extension. Ontario has provided $870 million towards thisproject that will provide subway service beyond regional boundariesin the province for the first time. The Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) will connect theToronto Transit Commission's (TTC) Line 1 from its present terminusat Downsview Station to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, makingcommuting more convenient and efficient in the Greater Toronto andHamilton area. The subway extension will also add 36 million transittrips and eliminate 30 million car trips annually, helping to improveair quality and fight climate change.

Ontario's funding for the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension ispar t of the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province'shistory -- $160 billion over 12 years -- for projects such as roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals. The planned invest-ments will suppor t 110,000 jobs on average every year across theprovince. In 2015, Ontario announced suppor t for more than 325projects that will keep people and goods moving, connect communi-ties and improve quality of life.Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said on this occasion: "With thisinvestment, we will provide subway service that moves beyond re-gional boundaries for the first time. Ontario Passes NewWaste-Free Ontario Act

BY MPP YASIR NAQVIOTTAWA - Ontario has passed legislation that will divert more wastefrom landfills, create jobs and help fight climate change. Currently, Ontariois producing too much waste, and not recycling enough. Over eight milliontonnes of waste is sent to landfill each year. Absolute greenhouse gasemissions from Ontario's waste have risen by 25 per cent between 1990and 2012 as the amount of waste disposed in landfills has increased. To help divert more waste from landfill, the province has passed the Waste-Free Ontario Act that will:" encourage innovation in recycling processes and require producers totake full responsibility for their products and packaging" lower recycling costs and give consumers access to more convenientrecycling options" help fight climate change by reducing greenhouse gas pollution thatresults from the landfilling of products that could otherwise be recycled orcomposted" overhaul Waste Diversion Ontario into the Resource Productivity andRecovery Authority, a strong oversight body with new compliance andenforcement powers that will oversee the new approach and existingwaste diversion programs until transition is complete. The province will also be finalizing its draft Strategy for a Waste-FreeOntario: Building the Circular Economy within three months of the legisla-tion coming into effect. The strategy outlines Ontario's vision for a zerowaste future and proposed plan to implement the legislation.Harnessing the value of waste as a resource is part of the government'seconomic plan to build Ontario up and deliver on its number-one priority togrow the economy and create jobs. The four-part plan includes investing intalent and skills, including helping more people get and create the jobs ofthe future by expanding access to high-quality college and university edu-cation.The plan is making the largest investment in public infrastructure inOntario's history and investing in a low-carbon economy driven byinnovative, high-growth, export-oriented businesses. Analysis: Congress says exaggeration marksModi government's two years in power

NEW DELHI, (IANS) The Congress on Monday said the NarendraModi government's two years in power at the Centre have beenmarked by exaggeration and prevarication. "We have alreadyseen that this is a government of exaggeration and prevarica-tion, that of misrepresentation of facts and drum beating,"Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told mediahere."Modi ji unfor tunately presides over a government of greatevent management skills but event management becomeshollow in the absence of all fundamental facts," he said. Heaccused the central government of lying and misrepresentingfacts related to crucial schemes. "No less than the primeminister said that Rs.15,000 crore was saved by plugging LPGsubsidies and leaks but some media repor ts have suggestedthat only Rs.143 crore was saved from cash transfers andsubsidies for LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) in over two years,"the Congress leader said."Even the government's Chief Economic Adviser ArvindSubramaniam says that potential savings from these schemes

could be Rs.12,000 crore as against the claimed IRs15,000crore," Singhvi added. He also said that the government hadissued only IRs60 lakh new LPG connections to the poor in thelast two years, instead of IRs3 crore connections claimed bythe prime minister."This is very clear because the government's press release inJanuary 2016 said that by January IRs45 lakh gas connectionshad been issued through 'Give Back' scheme. In April, Petro-leum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told the media that IRs60lakh new gas connections had been released," Singhvi said andwondered aloud: "Where did this mythical three crore connec-tions come from?"He said Modi claimed more than IRs1.65 crore fake rationcards were cancelled since May 2014 while the actual figurewas only IRs66 lakh. Singhvi also accused Finance MinisterArun Jaitley of misrepresenting facts."The Finance Minister says more than IRs20 crore bankaccounts were opened during the first 100 days of the 'Jan DhanScheme' but the actual figure is IRs8.7 crore, which is less than

40 per cent of what you are claiming," the Congress leadersaid. "The government's own repor t says on the 100th day ofthe government, IRs8.7 crore bank accounts were opened. "Sowhere did the IRs20 crores figure come from?"The Congress leader alleged that the central government did notgive out the country's actual Gross Domestic Product figures."India is the fastest growing country in the world. Remember, the 7.6 per cent GDP is on the basis of a new calculationsystem. Even Arvind Subramaniam and RBI GovernorRaghuram Rajan have publicly expressed scepticism about thenew method of calculation," Singhvi said while asser ting thatthe government's own figures show at least three other coun-tries ahead of India."They are not big countries but the figures should be correctwhen the country's Prime Minister speaks. The GDP inMyanmar is the highest at 8.6 per cent, followed by Ivory Coastat 8.5 per cent, Bhutan at 8.4 per cent and India at 7.5 per centas per the new method of calculation which is doubted by manyexper ts," Singhvi said.

Modi's US visit: Consolidating & celebrating a relationshipWASHINGTON, (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi's four th visit tothe US next week is seen here as consolidating and celebrating theIndia-US relationship that has undergone a transformation since 2000under three presidents. An impor tant dimension of Modi's June 6-8 visit at the invitation ofPresident Barack Obama will be his address to a joint meeting of theUS Congress on June 8 - eleven years after Washington revoked hisvisa under a religious freedom law passed by that very body.

BY ARUN KUMAR Modi, the fifth Indian Prime Minister to address the US Congressstar ting with Rajiv Gandhi, will also get another rare honour - a lunchhosted by the Republican Speaker Paul Ryan and a reception by theRepublican chairs and top Democrats on the House and Senate For-eign Relations panels. "Many people have ar ticulated that the invita-tion and the visit are really a par t of consolidating and celebrating theIndia-US relationship," said Arun Singh, Indian ambassador to the US.The visit will consolidate "what has been achieved so far and seeingwhat more can be done as we move into the next year when there willbe transition of the administration in the US and also elections to theUS Congress". It will also celebrate the achievements in the relation-ship "because in a sense the new phase in India-US relationship wasstar ted from 2000 when President (Bill) Clinton went to India," henoted. Then President George W. Bush transformed it with the landmarkCivil Nuclear Deal and Barack Obama with his two visits to India -including the one as chief guest at India's Republic Day - saying theIndia-US relationship will be a "defining par tnership of the 21st cen-tury". Singh also noted Obama's ar ticulation of suppor t for India'smembership of the UN Security Council, US suppor t for India's mem-bership of multilateral expor t control regimes and advances made inIndia-US defence par tnership. These include through the US-IndiaDefence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) where among othersthings the two sides are looking at cooperation in projects related toaircraft carrier technology and jet engine technology.Celebrating a lot of progress made in the two Obama terms, the visitwill in a sense launch into the next administration, he said. "That hasbeen the thrust and effor t related to this visit." The unique receptionon the Capitol Hill is also seen "as a reflection of the bipar tisan sup-por t in the US to the relationship", Singh said. "It's also a reflection ofthe value that people attach to this relationship.""Clearly people feel that India-US relationship has matured signifi-cantly," he said citing the growth in the par tnership in trade andeconomy, defence and technology among others. Modi who lands in

Washington on June 6 after a visit to Switzerland, will meet Obamaon June 7 to review the progress made in key areas of defence, security and energy over a working lunch at the White House. He will also have an interaction with top corporate leaders and ad-dress the annual meeting of the US India Business Council (USIBC)comprised of over 300 top American and Indian companies seekingstronger trade and commercial ties with India.

In addition to the NGOs, including the one run by Teesta Setalvad, thesaffron brotherhood's new target is a formidable one - Reserve Bankof India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan. Till now, the Hindutva camphadn't trained its guns on one so high who is not a politician. There islittle doubt, however, that the Sangh Parivar's motive is political. The attack on Rajan is not a frontal one. It is a flanking movement withnone other than the new Bharatiya Janata Par ty (BJP) Rajya Sabhamember, the perennially combative Subramanian Swamy, leadingthe charge. It is not clear if the targeting of Rajan has the approval ofthe BJP's top brass, for there are conflicting indications. While Finance Minister Arun Jaitley disapproves of the personal na-ture of the attacks, he has been silent on the question of extendingRajan's term beyond September considering that Swamy wants hisimmediate dismissal. However, the problem with Swamy's offensive- he has accused Rajan of acting at the behest US multinationals todamage the Indian small and medium industries - is that the volubleMP cannot always be taken seriously. The reason is that he is a maverick to beat all mavericks. As a result,he is perceived of as something of a loose cannon who can go off at atangent from his par ty's line. As much is clear from his earlier back-ing of the disgraced godman, Asaram Bapu, to the more recent call forbuilding the Ram temple by the year-end, about which the BJP hasbeen more than circumspect. Moreover, he is supposed to have beenelevated to the Rajya Sabha only to serve a specific purpose - that ofneedling the Nehru-Gandhis - and not open fire at random.Swamy has been per forming the first task with considerable zeal, pursuing the allegations against the Congress's first family in theNational Herald and AgustaWestland cases. More recently, he hascalled upon the Enforcement Directorate to probe the supposed trans-gressions of the business deals of Rober t Vadra, the first family'sson-in-law. In the midst of these endeavours, the sudden turning ofhis attention to Rajan is surprising. In view of the government's eagerness to maintain friendly ties withthe corporate sector, the latter's unfavourable reaction to Swamy'santics was only to be expected. The Confederation of Indian Industryhas already expressed its displeasure. None of this is unexpected, forRajan is known to be a favourite of India Inc. and of the media, espe-cially the financial newspapers. Narendra Modi's evasive statementon the issue - he told Wall Street Journal that Rajan's tenure can be ofno interest to the media - is unlikely to clear the scene. In any event, Modi's probable view is that nothing should be of inter-

Will Modi bow to RSS on Raghuram Rajan?BY AMULYA GANGULI

est to the media, which explains why he doesn't hold any press con-ferences. The hullabaloo created by Swamy appears to have per-suaded Rajan to decide not to seek a second term although he hasdescribed the controversy as evidence of a "noisy" democracy andthe "sign of its vibrancy". It is possible that Rajan's observation aboutIndia being the king in a land of the blind hasn't pleased the BJP.

TEHRAN, (IANS) Iran has described the US's annual repor t on terror-ism, which accuses Tehran of being one of the biggest sponsors ofglobal terrorism, as "ridiculous" and "false". Iran's Foreign AffairsMinistry in a statement on Saturday said both Iran and Syria, whichhave been placed on the repor t since 1984, increased their "terroristlinks" in 2015, Efe news repor ted.Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari responding to the repor tsaid: "The US State Depar tment's repor t on terrorism has ridiculedblatant realities and has turned into the best document for lack ofcredibility of the US by justifying the false accusations of Iran's sup-por t for terrorism." Jaberi said the struggles of nations that are underoccupations to achieve freedom and independence "are not instancesof terrorism". He said that par ts of the repor t based on such struggles

are rejected because they "reflect the will of the Zionist regime as thebiggest symbol of occupation, state terrorism, violation of humanrights and implementation of the policies based on massacre, sup-pression and denial of the existence of the Palestinian nation".The statement called the US the "biggest suppor ter of state terrorism,by unconditional support for the Zionist regime ... and now by practi-cal suppor t for the growth of extremism and terrorism as well as byignoring the large-scale financial and political suppor t by Saudi Arabiaand its other allies for the spread of this heinous phenomena through-out the world." Don't trust 'Great Satan' US,'evil' Britain: KhameneiTEHRAN, (IANS) Iranians were warned by the country's su-preme leader not to trust the US and other "small and big en-emies" of the country during commemorations of AyatollahKhomeini who led the country through the 1979 Islamic Revolu-tion. "We have many small and big enemies, but foremost amongthem are America and this very evil Britain," said SupremeLeader Ali Khamenei in a televised speech dedicated to the27th anniversary of the death of Sayeed Rouhollah Khomeini, who was the first person to hold the highest office in post-revolutionary Iran. The driving force behind the 1979 revolutionwas the rallying point for public outrage against Iran's ShahMohammad Reza Pahlavi, who had strong backing from the USand Britain while using secret police and mar tial law to subju-gate his people. During his reign, a CIA-sponsored coup over-threw Iran's elected government in 1953 for nationalising Brit-ain-owned oil companies.According to Khamenei, "America has continued its enmity to-wards Iran since the revolution. It is a huge mistake to trust evilBritain and the Great Satan," he added, referring to the US by anickname often used by Iranian officials in anti-Americanspeeches. Any individual or current which is working for Islam,if they trust America, they will be slapped in the face," he said. The Iranian leader said Iran would not cooperate with the US inregional affairs, because "their aims in the region are 180 de-grees opposed to Iran's."Iran and the US have a common enemy in the region, the terror-ist group Islamic State. The US was leading an internationalcoalition, which uses airstrikes and commando raids in an ef-for t to eradicate the IS powerbase in Iraq and Syria. Tehranprovides commanders for militias fighting against IS in Iraq andSyria and is a major ally of the Syrian government. The US, onthe other hand, said it wants the Syrian government ousted andhad been suppor ting armed groups in Syria, which Washingtondeems moderate.

Sozcu, a secular-nationalist newspaper wrote caustically: "The grand-children of Hitler accusing Turkey of genocide!", with a photo of Merkeloutfitted with a Hitler moustache and Swastika flag. The strongest cover came from the AK Party-related journal, Star, whichdevoted a full page to Merkel with a Hitler moustache, with the headline:"Everything for the PKK", referring to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).Turkish security forces are currently engaged in operations against the PKKin southeast Turkey. Holocaust comparisons to match those harsh wordscame from within the Turkish government too. "They burned Jews in fur-naces and now they slander the Turkish people by accusing us of somegenocide. Why don't you look at your own history first," Justice Minister BekirBozdag was quoted by the Anadolu Agency. On Friday the Turkish foreign

ministry responded to the German vote in a written statement, published ontheir official website and translated by Anadolu Agency, where they describethe vote as "an example of ignorance" and "disgraceful."

Remove references to Punjab, CBFC tells 'Udta Punjab' makersMUMBAI/CHANDIGARH, (IANS) The makers of Bollywood film "UdtaPunjab" are said to have been asked by the Revising Committee ofthe censor board to remove all references to Punjab -- a decisionperhaps taken under pressure from the ruling dispensation in thestate which is dealing with a festering problem of drugs."Udta Punjab", a Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan andDiljit Dosanjh starrer movie, delves into how the youth there havesuccumbed to drugs. The release of the movie in a year when thestate is less than nine months from assembly elections is likely to beseen as politically disastrous for the state's ruling par ty, the ShrimoniAkali Dal which is a par tner with the ruling-National Democratic Alli-ance at the centre.

Earlier, there was buzz that the Central Board of Film Cer tification(CBFC) had refused a release cer tificate for the Abhishek Chaubeydirected movie, but later the makers had clarified that no ban wasimposed on it. On Monday, repor ts emerged that the Revising Com-mittee of the CBFC has asked the makers to make 89 cuts.A source in the know of developments told IANS that the board'sprimary demand is to remove all the references to Punjab, but thenumber of cuts is not clear as they are still awaiting an "officialletter". "We haven't received a letter yet. We don't know how manycuts, but we can tell you that their basic demand is that any refer-ence of Punjab should be deleted from the movie... Which then meansa lot of cuts," the source told IANS.

Nawazuddin's journey in showbiz is inspiring: Vicky KaushalNEW DELHI, (IANS) Actor Vicky Kaushal says he is inspired by the showbiz journey of his "Raman Raghav 2.0" co-star NawazuddinSiddiqui. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap's "Raman Raghav 2.0" narrates story of the serial killer who went on murder spree in Mumbai inthe 1960s. It features Nawazuddin as the notorious serial-killer alongside Vicky, who plays a police officer."I look up to Nawaz and admire his work. He is a beautiful human being, very down to ear th and humble. It was a beautiful experienceto work with him apar t from learning craft from him," Vicky told IANS over phone from Mumbai. "Just watching him perform, seeing himtalk about his journey from Delhi and his struggle, was just so inspiring... Knowing that he is stuck to his ground so well, believed in hiscraft and was not bothered about the race which has payed out so well, is inspiring."Nawazuddin's powerful avant-garde roles in offbeat Indian films have set him apart from the true-blue heroes of Bollywood. He earned appreciationfor his roles in films like "Gangs Of Wasseypur", "Kahaani", "Kick", "The Lunchbox", "Talaash" and "Badlapur"."Raman Raghav 2.0" is yet to release in India, but is already making the right noise on foreign shores. It was applauded at the 69th Cannes Film Festival, andthe film is slated for June 24 release. Vicky says in order to prepare for his character, he went into isolation mode for some days. He said: "My character is verydifferent from who I am from the way he thinks, the way he behaves, his family background, and his circumstances.

No similarities between Dishoom, DhoomMUMBAI, (IANS) The lead actors of "Dishoom", John Abraham and Varun Dhawan, have denied any similarities that the film has with oneof John's most popular films "Dhoom", which has become a successful franchise now. At the trailer launch of the film, when asked aboutthe similarities with "Dhoom" and if "Dishoom" can also be made into a successful franchise like "Dhoom", Varun said: "This is nothinglike 'Dhoom', but because John was in the first 'Dhoom', I think he should answer why it is different.""When I heard the script of 'Dishoom', the first thing that I told Sajid (Nadiadwala) and Rohit (Dhawan) was that 'Dishoom' will go up to'Dishoom' 8 because this is a very young, action adventure franchise. Kabir and Junaid (their characters) will find new problems, newissues and move to different places. It's going to be fun. It's a great franchiable film," John said. John's "Dhoom" was one of his biggesthits, and the franchise grew bigger with superstars like Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan taking it on a higher level with "Dhoom 2" and"Dhoom 3". John's character in the film is also named Kabir like it was in "Dhoom". "Except the name, it's a different template. It's adifferent format, it's very different and I really love this space. The experience was absolutely fantastic. We had a lot of fun, great action, the actions sequences in the film are very large, it's really huge scale film. It's very special, it comes from the heart. We're not forcingthe line," he added. About his special moments from the film, John said, "All of us coming together is fantastic, with Sajid it's my secondfilm. I can confidently say that I'm really close to him. Rohit is like my younger brother. With Varun, what you can see on the screen, weare the same off the screen. Our chemistry is absolutely fantastic. Jacky (Jacqueline Fernandez) is a sweethear t. I've been a huge fanof Akshaye (Khanna). So the fact that he is in this film means so much to me personally."

Amrita Rao's gifts to 'Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai' crewMUMBAI, (IANS) Actress Amrita Rao, who plays Kalyani Gaiekwad in "Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai", has gifted motorised fans to crewof the popular TV show, to offer them relief in the scorching heat. "We shoot outdoors and most of our shoots are on real locations. If thecrew can take care of the actors and make sure that we are comfor table while shooting, then why shouldn't I make sure the same aboutthem," Amrita said in a statement. "I have gifted them motorised fans which they can use wherever and whenever they want. It is smalland handy and hence it's really useful," added the actress, who recently got married to RJ Anmol. "Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai", whichis aired on &TV, also features Deepti Naval, Zarina Wahab and Pallavi Joshi among others.

A classy film for people with crass taste, "Housefull 3" seriouslyblows your sensibilities away. The film is without a doubt cre-atively designed with quirky character traits, good locales, glamor-ous images and incredible gags that hit the zero denominator muchtoo often. The narrative star ts off as an after thought, with a confus-ing and inexplicable heist that takes place in central London, whichoccurred six years earlier. We are then transpor ted to the present-day London where we areintroduced to Bhatook Patel (Boman Irani) and his three daughtersGanga aka Gracy (Jacqueline Fernandes), Jamuna aka Jenny (LisaHaydon) and Saraswati aka Sarah (Nargis Fakhri). At a par ty,Bhatook vehemently declares: "I'll never get my daughters mar-ried." And he has his reasons.Bhatook finds excuses to prevent his daughters from gettingmarried and how three guys -- Sandy aka Sundy (Akshay Kumar) afootballer, Teddy (Riteish Deshmukh) a car racer and Bunty(Abhishek Bachchan) a rapper -- corner him into accepting them, forms the crux of the tale. There are other minor digressions too, which complicate ourprospective trio's chances. The directors -- who have also writtenthe story, script and dialogues of the film -- have whipped up all thetropes of the comedy genre to give us a mish-mash of unpalatableenter tainment. With dialogues like, "Will you be my tawaif... Errwife", or "Suck the ants from my pants" with metre and rhyme,

there is poetry in the dialogues as well as the lyrics, too. Also, transliterated dialogues like; "Humlog bachche nahin bana rahenhain...", which meant, "We are not kidding", prompts a chuckle. Buttoo many of such transliterated jokes over-eggs the humour. Theactors, except for Jackie Shroff, indulge in buffoonery to the hilt. They all are loud, over-the-top characters who go overboard withtheir exhibition and that's because their characters demands themto do so.Akshay Kumar exhibits his physical prowess with his over-energetic performance of a dual personality and a crippled bound toa wheelchair, he is dynamic and is aptly suppor ted by equallytalented co-stars; Riteish Deshmukh whose tongue often slips andAbhishek Bachchan who often breaks into a crass rap. The triohave excellent onscreen "buddy" chemistry, with perfect comictiming.Though the actresses have nothing much to offer in terms ofhistrionics, they are equally charming. Chunky Pandey as therestaurateur Akhri Pasta with his recycled line, "I am joooking" isstaid and stereotyped. Jackie Shroff as the Don of Mumbai, UrjaNagri urf Urja Bhai, lacks energy. And, Boman Irani, though atalented actor, fails to leave an impact as Bhatook Patel. With songs like "Nachenge sari sari raat, tang uthaake", "Pyar kima ki... puja" and a rap number like, "Teri maa behen... teri maabehen", the music and background score is loud and elementary which doesnot help the narrative. Overall, "Housefull 3", with few seriously funny mo-ments which are few and far between, is a huge let-down.

CAN'T MAKE FILMS LIKE 'SULTAN', 'DISHOOM': ANURAG KASHYAPMUMBAI, (IANS) Director Anurag Kashyap says that he considers all his films commercial but cannot make films such as "Sultan" and"Dishoom", though he liked their trailers. At the launch of the song "Qatl-E-Aam" from his upcoming film "Raman Raghav 2.0", Anuragwas asked if he liked the trailer of superstar Salman Khan's "Sultan"."I saw the trailer and in every trailer you enjoy it. I even enjoyed 'Dishoom' a lot, but the problem with me is that I can't make them," hesaid. The trailers of "Sultan" and Varun Dhawan, John Abraham starrer "Dishoom" were launched recently and have already registeredviews in millions. The films can be called masala enter tainers, while Anurag is known for his realistic films such as "Black Friday" andhis other films, too, like "Gangs of Wasseypur" have a different style and can't perhaps be termed masalaa films. His last film "BombayVelvet" had a massive budget but it failed at the box office. Considering the failure, is there a bigger pressure on him to deliver with"Raman Raghav 2.0". "That happens with every film. We want every film to work well. But with 'Raman Raghav 2.0' there is not that much pressureas was in the previous film. Our last film ('Bombay Velvet') was Titanic. This film is our boat," Anurag said. Would he like to make a commercial filmlike "Bombay Velvet" again? "All films are commercial for me. Whenever I make films, I think in commercial terms."

The Anil Kumble-led committee also discussed the controversialDecision Review System (DRS) which still remains a headache for the ICC, considering the stiff opposition from the Board of Control forCricket in India (BCCI)."The committee also expressed concern about the quality of Test pitches, and, in par ticular, the common practice of home countriesover tly preparing surfaces to suit their own teams," an ICC release said. "The committee received a presentation from MIT engineers ontheir testing of the current technologies used in the DRS. It said it will release a detailed repor t on the subject, including recommendedchanges to the system, over the coming weeks," it added.Meanwhile, in what comes as a boost to women's cricket, the ICC said the 2016 Women's World T20, which was being parallelly heldwith the men's edition, attracted 24.5 million viewers in India alone with an average audience of 100,000 in the United States region."The committee received a repor t from Clare Connor, the Chair of the ICC Women's Committee, on the impact of the recent ICC Women'sWorld Twenty20 in India, which showed the women's event received greater exposure than ever before and attracted 24.5 million TVviewers in India alone, as well as generating an average audience of 100,000 in the US on Willow TV," the release said. EURO 2016 PREVIEW: GERMANY,POLAND FAVOURITES IN GROUP CBERLIN, (IANS) Reigning world champions Germany andPoland are the favourites to advance to the next round fromgroup C in Euro 2016. Ukraine and Nor thern Ireland are thegroup's underdogs. While Ukraine may challenge Polandand Germany to some degree, Nor thern Ireland are re-garded as rank outsiders, repor ts Xinhua. The teams' aims could not be more different. While the 1996European Champion Germany is targeting the tournamentwin, Poland would be happy to get to the quar ter finalswhile Ukraine would be happy with a place in the last 16.There will Nor thern Ireland par ty with every goal and pointthey manage to score or win in the three group matches.Ahead of the tournament, head coach Adam Nawalka'sPolish team seems to be the only team in a position toseriously challenge Germany -- they play each other in thesecond group match on June 16. Beating Germany at homein the qualifying tournament gave the Poles a massivemotivational boost. The 3-1 loss in the re-match was theironly defeat in the last two years. Poland scored the mostgoals in qualifying (33) and the attack is the team's biggeststrength as Rober t Lewandowski (Bayern Munich/13 goals)and Arkadiusz Milik (Ajax Amsterdam/6 goals) are classinternational acts. The defence in the well balanced and experienced team isthe weakest par t. At the back however they are the secondworst team of all par ticipating nations af ter conceding 10goals in qualifying. Using a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1 system,Poland can count on a strong midfield and excellentattacking play down the flanks. Lewandowski, defenderKamil Glik (AC Turin) and Grzegorz Krychowiak (Sevilla)are the team's kingpins. The games against Germany andUkraine will be crucial to Poland if they are to have an easyt ime.Soon af ter the brilliant per formance in Brazil and the happyend in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina, Germanycoach Joachim Loew's team suffered a downturn -- one thathas been going on for two years without the Germans everbeing able to fully counteract it.Loew had to begin a rebuilding process after MiroslavKlose, Philipp Lahm, Per Mer tesacker retired. He also isfacing an injury crisis as captain Bastian Schweinsteiger(Manchester United) and central defender Mats Hummels

(Borussia Dor tmund) are struggling to recover in time. However the loss of several World Champion players couldturn out to be an advantage as Loew has had to call uponnew faces and fresh minds. Mario Gomez (BesiktasIstanbul) is back in top form and could replace Klose as aspearhead. But Loew has many other possibilities as histeam is able to use several different systems like 4-2-3-1 or3-5-1-1. Mario Goetze seems back in a better frame of mindafter a disappointing season at Bayern Munich. AndreSchuerrle (VfL Wolfsburg) is much-improved while keeperManuel Neuer, defender Jerome Boateng and striker ThomasMueller (all Bayern Munich) have been playing at a consis-tently high level and are vital to the team.Like in Brazil, Loew is trying to create a special team spiritby choosing the appropriate squad members. Many are not sure whether Mykhaylo Fomenko will get histeam on the right track. After all Ukraine's head coach has todeal with a totally different situation as the country is stuckin a political crisis which has also influenced its nationalteam. To say it clearly: Under these circumstances it was asurprise that Ukraine managed to qualify at all having losingfive previous play-offs for major tournaments. Things camegood in 2016 when they won the two-legged play-off againstSlovenia. The curse seems to over.Ukraine prefer a defensive game within a 4-5-1 system. Theteam relies on a strong physical game and their two topstars are striker Andriy Yarmolenko (Dynamo Kiev) andmidfielder Yeven Konoplyanka (Sevilla). For Nor thern Ireland, the European Championship finals areseen as being an adventure. The team and coach MichaelO'Neill are loving the underdog role. For the team made upmainly of second and third division players, the three groupgames are like a final and expectations are non-existentdespite the wish not to lose all of their three games withoutscoring any goals.Playing three games on a high level will be a challenge foran inexperienced but determined team that has an unbeat-able will, is very strong physically and has the ability toplay many tactical systems such as 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-1-4-1, 5-3-2 and 4-5-1. If there is any star in the team at all it mightbe striker Kyle Laffer ty (Birmingham City) who scoredseven goals in the qualifying games.
