Senior MwamboThe Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony that marks the transition of black graduates from their lives at the University of Miami to advanced education and professional careers. This ceremony was established in 1992 through the vision and love of a very dynamic and caring international student from Malawi, East Africa; Mr. Patrick A. Masala.

The term “Mwambo” literally means ceremonial rite of passage. It is Chichewa and comes to us from Malawi, East Africa where it was founded. The Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony designed to recognize the accomplishments of our black graduates and their families. It is a celebration of the transition from one stage of life to the next.

This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2:00pm in Gusman Hall. For additional information regarding the Senior Mwambo, please contact the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs at 305-284-2855.

Love your Body events on campus Many students struggle with the way they look or how they feel about their bodies, with one out of three normal dieters progressing to pathological dieting. By recognizing the symptoms of eating disorders, and getting help, women and men can end their preoc-cupation with food and focus their efforts on developing healthy eating and exercise habits. To raise awareness of this struggle, the week of February 26 is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. As part of this national observance, BARE will be offer-ing anonymous screenings for eating disorders (Breezeway at lunchtime on 2/27 and 2/29) as well as information about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The following week BARE is celebrating Love Your Body Week (March 4 to March10) and we will kick off the week with Operation Beautiful speaker Caitlin Boyle who will talk about her mission: Transforming the way you see yourself one post-it at a time. This event is March 5th from 4:30 to 6 in the UC Flamingo Ballroom. You can visit Opera-tionbeautiful.com and for more information about BARE events contact Tammy Sifre at 305 284-5511.
